The locomotive is well made from high quality plastic, it is powerful and had no problems pulling a long train up the Brio bridges. One pair of AA batteries lasted for several hours of running, which I think is very good. The buttons on top are intuitive, our 22month old just knew which one to press for forward and back; he is not interested in stop. The switchable front lights and flashing reversing light are a great idea. There is no magnetic coupling on the front. The remote control can be a bit dodgy - sometimes we have to put it in reverse to get stop, but usually it works fine. It does need line of sight which, as the unit seems to be designed to sit on a surface rather than be held in one hand and operated with the other, could be a problem for kids. It is intended for 3 years and up.When purchased the Engine was priced at a similar level to other battery engines which made it an absolute bargain. I think it is usually rather more expensive. I have rated it 4 stars only because the remote control is a bit awkward for kids to hold, point and operate simultaneously, otherwise it would be 5 stars.

We got ours from Sainsburys for £23, after trying one Tesco (carousel £9)that would not stay on the track! Now this one is something else, 2 speed and revers, lights on n off, a horn too and stays on the track 99% of the time not 5% like the cheep one!Works with or without the remote but with slightly less control 2nd speed only, stop and reverse. No horn or control of the lights! Makes a braking noise when it stops and a engine noise when it starts of for a not too short time then just the quiet motor noise.Pulls up hill very well compared to our other two small BRIO engines that take only 1 AAA.One star down because it does not go up hill backwards! Our bright 23 month old uses it with easeand puts the biggest smile on his face you have ever seen!If you want it to stay in 1st speed or reverse from the controller cover the infared emitter and release the auto stop handle. All in all a very good purchase!

Bought this train for our grandson aged 5, and he loved it! We bought cheap batteries at first and it did go through them quickly but purchased some more expensive ones and they last for a good few hours, although we have now invested in rechargeable batteries. We have found no problem with the remote control, I have walked quite a distance away from the train and it still works, also our grandson just tends to have the controller next to him not pointing at the train and it still works. In conclusion I would definitely recommend this little train, we researched quite a few battery trains and this one came out with the best reviews as some of the other trains were either too long so fell offthe track on the corners or were a bit wide and struggled with tunnels etc we will be purchasing the white one for his little brother when he is a little older.

Got this for my son's 5th birthday as he is a wooden train lover. This was and still is (months later) a massive hit. We have rechargeable batteries in both the train and the remote control and it's fine. The train is surprisingly strong, able to pull or push a 6 carriages (yes, I'm not kidding).I took one star off the rating because the radio control need to point in the rough direction of the train, otherwise it doesn't work, and we thought it was a fault to start with. But now as we know this, it's fine and would def buy this again

Bought to go with many sets we already have, with track from Brio, Tesco & John Lewis. Engine stays on the track well and goes really fast in comparison to other engines we have. We also bought a Mighty Red Action Locomotive (not remote controlled) but this one is faster! My 5 year old loves it as you can make the sound and lights work from the remote in addition to forward, back and stop. On occasion the remote control has been a little temperamental but this hasn't caused any problems and is usually rectified by switching it off/on.

Brilliant Brio does it again! The train itself is of lovely quality and is very sturdy, it is very reliable and has lasted a lot longer than other remote control trains I gave purchased in the past. The train has several settings, forward, fast forward, stop and reverse as well as lights and sounds. The train can also be used without the remote using the buttons on top of the train. The train works well on our Brio, Tesco and IKEA wooden train track sets and also works on the carpet and the kitchen floor.

Sturdy little train. 3 year old plays quite often with it. He doesnt bother with the remote and does not like it if I use it! As mentioned elsewhere the remote is directional so will not work if it has not got approximate line of sight with the receiver on the engine but it has a reach of approx 3 metres It is quite strong and can pull a few carriages up and over the bridge. I could have saved a few pounds and bought non remote train but perhaps he will take an interest at some point

Lots of comments about remote control, my view: a) it won't start the train from sleep, you need to press one of the buttons on the train to wake it up, b) the remote looks like it is infra red and is relatively directional, eg you do need to point it at the train to make it work. It's a great thing but maybe we had bad luck at it started to only work backwards after three weeks, thought brio would be better than that so sent back. Remember you need 4 x AAs!

Love this! Amazing gift to any child/adult ? our three year loves it and controls it easily! Great fun used most days! Auto shuts off....v handy as he leaves it going round and round ? ? handles well more so than the battery ones that you press. This goes forwards and back also fab lights and noises! highly recommend....made a perfect bday gift ? he was just mesmerised and ecstatic ? ....I also can’t resist having a play when given the opportunity ??

Brilliant toy - so great that weve ended up getting two more so we can race them. Really well made as youd expect from brio and have lasted really well despite the abuse of two toddlers (and some grownups!). Work well though you do have to point the remote straight at the train. Two channels so you can run two separately on the same track. Easy to change the batteries but nice and secure.

Great little train with controls both on the body and via the remote. My boy really enjoys making it change direction and the sound & lights buttons. It just squeezes under the standard bridge. The infra-red controller needs to be pointed the right way to work, which can frustrate at first.Couples nicely with the carriages and can pull them, although not up any incline.

My boys - 7 & 4 - LOVE this train, their favourite by a long way. It works with or without the remote & is far faster than their other battery operated trains & it will happily pull a good number of carriages. Given 4 rather than 5 stars as we had to return one that wouldn't work for a replacement ( although it was exchanged with no quibble).

This is a tough little train and goes well. The handset is a bit awkward, especially for little hands, and will only work if pointed exactly at the back of the train, so has to follow it round the track. It can work using the buttons on top of the train instead, so it's not a real problem, but could be neater and easier to manoeuvre.

Excellent toy. I - I mean my little boy - loves it. Seems to be able to pull more than you'd think over the hump-backed bridges Brio sell. So far hasn't run out of battery and it's been played with regularly for two months. Unlike a similar one I bought from a place that rhymes with Flesco. Recommend it.

Good fun and usual excellent Brio quality all round. Not quite great though as the control is a but too intermittent and the pulling power is not quite enough, which both detract from the fun a little. Good to bother other train players thousands you sit back and cause havoc from your sofa!
