I am really impressed / pleased with this drive. It seems to be increasingly difficult to find a recognisable brand-name drive for under around £35.My laptop does actually have a CD/DVD drive, but it is playing up and does not recognise some music CDs (I rip my CDs to my laptop, so I have music with me when working away from home). It is quite likely that my next laptop will not have an optical drive at all - so I decided to get an external drive. This drive comes with a software disc (DVD format), although I have not bothered to use it. I simply connected the drive to my laptop, confirmed that windows 7 recognised it, inserted my CD and I was away. I also tested it with a DVD movie - no problem at all.As with many external drives, optical drives like this and hard-drives, this device takes its power from the USB socket of the computer to which it is connected. Also, in common with many similar peripherals, there is no external power-supply for this drive. The supplied USB cable is a "Y-cable", such that if your Asus drive cannot receive enough power from a single USB socket, then the second USB plug must be connected. The Y-Cable lead to the extra-power USB plug is quite short, so the two USB sockets would need to be close together (and not on opposite sides of the laptop - or you will need an extension USB cable). I needed to plug in both plugs to play a DVD movie - it was recognised by my computer, and the DVD name was recognised with only one plug connected, but it would not play the DVD (it would read the contents of the software DVD supplied with only one plug connected)The supplied DVD with the drive seems to contain some sort of back-up software, and an ASUS-Green "power-saving" software - I did install that but after one look at it I uninstalled it. The quick operating instructions do not cover what is included on the CD, and I do not need it for my purposes.I also bought a case in which to store or carry this drive - as the drive itself is quite lightweight and I think could be easily damaged if not looked after. I bought this: RLSOCO Hard Protective Carrying Case for USB CD DVD HDD Blu-Ray Burner, Ultra Portable External Hard Drive Case . The case fits well in terms of length and width/depth - perhaps slightly too high, but a bit of foam on top of the drive and it is held snugly.Very happy with the purchase of this drive, great value for the price.Update: 23 Jan 2018: been using this drive quite a bit for several weeks. Has not failed to be recognised once by my laptop, and has not failed to read even a single CD (I only plug it in to the laptop when I need to use it).

My latest laptop doesn't have an optical drive as often seems to be the case these days. There are occasions when I still need the capability so I looked up these external drives. I realise streaming is one of the more popular means of viewing media in this day & age (I stream an awful lot myself), but it's not like everyone instantly stopped using CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray media, or completely stopped using them to store, or move important data either. 22 years ago my first laptop had a removable 3.5" floppy drive & CD-Rom drive, (only one of the drives could be in the dock at a time obviously & a reboot was required to swap drives too).It worked well enough but it wasn't particularly convenient especially at a time when hard drives were measured in mere MB's, not the TB's of today. Despite also owning multiple USB external HDD's, dozens of various data cards, & flash drives, etc., too, I still feel dropping optical drives completely was a bit of a backwards step personally.Ergo, this external drive has already come in quite handy for me. My laptop instantly discovered the drive & it immediately installed the relevant software drivers too. The drive was ready for use in seconds. It does the job well enough for its rated purpose but it's pretty noisy without the chassis of a laptop to dampen the vibration & noise of the spin speed. (The design is essentially an optical drive from a laptop inside an external case). It's supplied with a splitter cable in case you need the extra power from a second USB port when writing to discs, but thus far a single USB3 port has supplied enough power for both read & write operations on my newer laptop. (Whether you need to use 2 USB ports will come down to individual hardware). It looks good & seems well made externally, although the internal tray isn't particularly robust, & could very easily become damaged or inoperable if not exercising care!! External optical drives can get VERY warm too, especially when writing but this is to be expected. For the price, can't really grumble.Overall, not bad for light or occasional use, but I wouldn't rely on one like a dedicated internal drive in all honesty. Build quality could be better!! However, I would still recommend one if your device doesn't have an internal optical drive & you find yourself in need of one. 4/5.

I bought the Rioddas external unit at £19 and unfortunately I found that it wouldn't read any DVD-R's it also failed to read a regular DVD, or a data DVD for installing the Highway code.It would appear that the fault lies with the amount of power required to run it.This was not made clear at point of sale that it required a regular laptop current supply to use it, so no real fault with the equipment itself, just the use of it that wasn't clear so it went back.I should say that I'm using an Acer Switch 12, which is a 12" all in one, having little power for external drives (a bit like the microsoft surface pro and the macbook pro netbooks)Enter this unit. Firstly,it works right off the bat with just one of the USB leads (it has a thick USB lead doubled up with a thinner one, presumably to give the extra power needed for burning to the Mdiscs supplied)As it worked with the thicker lead, I've just tested like that and have to say it's played all the discs I threw at it.When I come to burn I will plug the other lead into my second USB port and see if that works. The only potential problem with that, is that my Acer has one USB 3 port and one USB-C port so I'll use an adaptor, but I don't know if the USB-C port will give enough power.A plus point is that it doesn't have a captive lead, if a lead were captive and it broke, the whole unit would have to go back, with this, the lead is separate, and it can be replaced if necessary.I have a plan though, that is to use a Powered USB 4 way block to stick the extra USB cable in that comes with this external player, the theory being that the main source of power will come from the powered USB block and not the netbook. Watch this space for an update. Here's a link to a similar powered USB block to mine: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sabrent-4-Port-Individual-Switches-HB-UM43/dp/B00JX1ZS5O/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=powered+usb+block&qid=1561293906&s=gateway&sr=8-6UPDATE: 1/7/19. Tried with external powered USB block and it's all fine. As I have a wireless mouse, it was handy to plug the mouse receiver, and the two leads of this DVD drive into the block, and then plug the block's own USB3 cable into the Acer

I bought this from Argos but it is cheaper through Amazon.Bought to transfer my music collection to my Chuwi Hi10pro tablet. It will not plug and play unless you have a powered USB socket as well as a data transfer USB socket. There is a very easy work around however.... My tablet has an unpowered usb socket in the removable keyboard of my tablet, but this also works if I use a USB A to C converter ( the tablet socket is USB C). Plug the long USB lead into your tablet/ notebook and connect the short USB cable to a power source ( a USB wall plug ... you will possibly need a USB male to male coupling connector depending on the leads you have available as the cable is far to short to reach a wall plug without a cable extension.Voila!the ASUS drive fires up and is recognised by my Windows 10 software. I immediately ripped a cd to the tablet using widows media player. I set the media rip setting to FLAC format and now intend to transfer my cd collection to a high res player (maybe the Sony) via drag and dropping files on the Chuwi tablet. Pleased because I avoid iTunes and Apple products which caused me to loose my entire music collection last year!Quite a delicate drive but then it was only a bit over 20 quid so I was not expecting it to be bulletproof, but for the price I’m happy to get a top brand that works as expected. Just remember the power requirements for smaller notebooks or tablets may require extra connectors as per my experience.

I have been using it extensively with an old 2014 MacBook Pro and honestly I have pretty much nothing to complain about.Super straight forward, no install of any kind required (on MacOS anyway) though it comes with a CD to setup the “ASUS DVD Suite” which seems to have a few programs you can install if you so wish, along with two 4.7GB storage discs (if you’re into that sort of storage still) and a Micro USB to a double USB type A cable, one of which can be used for both power and signal while the other is just for power. If that seems confusing don’t worry, chances are that you will only really use the one for signal and power anyway.Oh and lastly it also seems to come with a code that appears to offer you 6 months to some ASUS Web Storage upon activation, which I didn’t know was even a thing... but HEY, can’t complain about more perks right?!As for the DVD drive itself it’s super light, super thin, and has a nice textured top which prevents any fingerprint smudges. It’s a very basic and minimalistic design which I always like.Good job Asus. Even in 2020 (baring in mind this drive came out several years ago already), it is still a really solid choice for anyone wanting a simple DVD drive for their computer. Big thumbs up.Hope this helps! =)

I am sourcing some kit for my son that requires an external DVD-player, as the laptop that we have agreed on for him does not have one. This is the 2nd drive that I have bought for this task: the first one - another make entirely - just would not work, either on his laptop, my laptop or my desktop, and has been returned - despite having a 100% 5-star rating from 38 reviews. Makes you wonder....So, I have gone back to an old faithful, as I have already had one of these ASUS drives for my own use, for a couple of years, and it has not let me down. With hindsight, with that performance record I should have gone for buying another one from the start. This ASUS drive works - and I believe it is precisely because it requires two USB ports,as that gives it enough power. So, if you have two USB ports available, and you want an external drive that works, this may be the one for you.One point to note: when you attach the drive, if you are using Windows you will hear Windows recognise it, but it probably won't appear in Explorer. It will only do that when you put a disk into it.

When looking for Linux support on the M-Disk burner manufacturers websites they specifically mention their commercial partners MS Windows and Apple OS but fail to mention Linux (and LG actually say Linux is not supported on their M-Disk burner in answer to a question). If you have an M-Disk burner and the OS can burn DVD R (which is best to try first) and it worked on Linux Mint then you can try it with an M-Disk DVD and 2 disks (worth £4) are supplied with this Asus which also helps. I then copied a system install disk to an M-Disk OK.Burning required 2 USB ports for the extra power needed to burn the M-Disks (More expensive Disks)special layer above normal DVDs and it runs at only 4x speed so it is best to have no other apps running during this time esp if backing up over several 4.7GB disks as you don't want to do it twice and make coasters.Linux Mint required no extra drivers nor other time consuming problems solvers unlike some Windows and Mac feedback on various websites.I will be testing some more in future and if any problems report back. But so far so good.

Running on MacBook Pro 2015The Good: It works well and is reliable. Having previously owned a cheaper external drive this performs perfectly so far.Comes with 2 sets of cables. USB C and Y. Build quality feels very good for its size. The Not So Good: It's a USB 2 (mini) interface. Supplied Y cable needs 2 USB ports and the cable is short (too short for the Macbook). Bizarrely the USB C cable only needs one port. Despite is metal effect look/finish its just plastic. The Bad: Expensive and no free M-DISCs as with the U7M version. Not sure what the extra cost buys you. No compatible software for OSX supplied.Other notes: When a disk is in the drive it will not eject unless initiated by OSX (physical button does nothing). When no disc in the drive the button always opens the drive. A little quirk of OSX I suspect and it's never failed to work. Noise levels were as expected and not too noisy at all but it's never going to be silent due to it being a physical media.Overall I am very happy with it due to its reliability and its does look pretty good with my Mac.

I bought this to go with a new Mac Mini which is not yet purchased so I tested it on my wife's Mac Book Pro 2013 to check it out.Yes, it works reading disks with only one of the USB-A plugs inserted which is fortunate as, on this device, the second one is the other side of the keyboard so would not reach. I haven't tried writing discs and if that requires the extra power then it would not be much use on that machine. I am hoping that as the USB-C cable only has one connector that all functions will work with that on the Mini.I have noted that none of the supplied software is for Mac, but to be fair, the Amazon listing does say that. Some reviews mentioned sample M-Discs included in the box but mine didn't come with any.It is not a technology I had heard of before. It was disappointing that CMD-E did not eject the discs and I don't hold out much home for the dedicated Eject button on the Mini but it is not a great hardship to right-click-eject.

This is not the cheapest external CD/DVD drive, but it works very nicely (unlike a cheaper one I bought off Ebay which cannot now be seen by my laptop). It's not something you can be rough with, it's not built like a tank by any means, but treated with care it should be fine. I've only given 3 stars for 'Ease to install' because the product comes with a 2 into one USB lead and suggests you plug the 2 USB end of the lead into 2 USB ports on your computer to make sure it has enough power. That was a problem for me as I needed 2 of my 3 USB ports in the circumstances I wanted to use the external drive. Luckily, my laptop is obviously able to produce enough power for the drive to work using just 1 port.I didn't read anything about this 2 USB situation before buying the product and I have no idea how you would know if your ports have enough power until you try it?

Bought primarily to transfer my CD collection to iTunes on my Windows 10 laptop, this inexpensive drive did the job perfectly. It's simple plug and go on Windows 10. To ensure sufficient power, they do recommend that the USB Y-lead supplied is connected to two ports on your laptop, which could be a problem if they're already occupied by mouse dongle and such like. I found though that, with my laptop on mains power, this drive worked fine from just one USB socket. As well as CDs, DVDs work perfectly, but you will need to find a suitable app (plenty of free ones a quick Google away).Only criticism is that it all feels rather flimsy and only time will tell whether it's robust enough to give long service. So far so good though. This is a cheap, easy to use device that fits easily in my laptop bag and I'm very satisfied with it.

Works well writing to M discs. Hopeless enclosed software. I binned the Cd. Used Nero and it went without a hitch. A very well priced item, which arrived pretty quickly and well packaged. I'm using Windows 10 with Nero 2017 on a 3 years old Dell latitude. Plug and play found it instantly. So simple.Update....I have copied numerous DVDs successfully in the last few days and viewed some all with no problem. The drive is relatively quiet. I had a slight glitch when a notification came on the screen saying the drive was empty when it wasn't. I just unplugged the writer and plugged it back again. However this is probably a problem with my operating system. It hasn't done it again.

Having previously bought a cheaper ‘highly rated’ alternative which turned out to be rubbish for Win 10 I searched the web for reviews for ‘best drive’ . . . ASUS ZenDrive came out well . . .I ordered it yesterday, it was delivered today.Unwrapped it, plugged it in to my HP Win 10 Laptop . . . It installed instantly and created a recovery disc (which I needed it for) My laptop does not have an internal dvd drive and I wanted to ensure my data could be safely re-installed / recovered.I did not read any of the enclosed leaflets or install any software from the enclosed disc.I expect products to work out of the box and this ASUS ZenDrive did exactly that!

Needed a drive for my new computer as the trend seems not to fit a DVD drive to these desktop games computers so this is just the job, the lead was long enough for my needs 53cms (21") approx one end goes into the drive (obviously) and the other end for the computer is terminated in dual USB plugs so you will need two spare USB ports and having them on the front and at the top of my computer case it was simply a matter of plugging them both into these and it was ready to use, when inserting a disk the tray does feel a little flimsy but most external drives are like this and no real need to worry, all in all very satisfied and Asus is a top brand.

I replaced my laptop and, shock/horror, no optical drive with which to load my legacy software. Looked at an awful lot of these things and noted that many seemed to have hiccups with Windows 10. This drive came with lots of evidence that it would handle Windows 10, was reduced to a reasonable price and was badged with a quality name. Promptly delivered, very smart packaging, stylish to look at, plugged and played without problems, and loaded up my software in double quick time. Haven't written with it yet, but I'm sure it will work a treat. The M Disks were a nice free gift, which I shall use for my photo archive. Overall, very pleased.
