I purchased this DVD writer after reading from previous reviewers here on Amazon that it also worked with Mac OS. I needed an external DVD/CD writer as the slot-drive in my iMac had stopped working. This is a very slim and attractive product, a far cry from the monoliths that were in circulation only about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, despite the Samsung's website advertising it in several different colour, it really only seems to be available in black (at least here on Amazon). As other reviewers mentioned, be aware that the double USB lead provided is very short, and you will need two adjacent USB ports on your computer or laptop. This is no problem with my iMac but in the name of science I tested it by plugging in one end of the USB lead into a USB extension; therefore only using 1 of the USB ports at the back of the iMac, utilising instead one of the ports on the keyboard. It worked perfectly. Alternatively you can purchase a USB splitter to 'create' extra USB ports from a free one.A minor warning to Mac users, this drive will not appear as 'mounted' on your desktop; I couldn't even see it in the Finder; instead, to check that it's connected, the online manual directs you to the System Profiler; I checked that and it showed correctly. To 'eject' the drive I just unplugged the USB cable; I couldn't see any other way of doing it.I was also concerned that I wouldn't be able to burn CDs directly from iTunes - in the past, iTunes only allowed one to do so from the Mac's 'own' drive (although there were applications to install to bypass this). However this clearly has been rectified over the years and I was able to burn an audio CD from iTunes, no problems. It will take a minute or so for the CD to be recognised in iTunes, for some reason, so be patient and don't panic if it doesn't load straightaway. When it's finished, the CD does actually shows as 'mounted' on iTunes so you can just eject it in the usual way.I also imported some audio CDs and I am pleased to report that the drive was very fast and very silent. I have yet to test the DVD burning facility but I will update this review once I have; however, there is no reason why there should be any problems. The device is very slim and easily fits on its side (tray side up) on a bookshelf, so you have no bulky hardware cluttering your desk.I hope this DVD writer will last me a long time; so far it seems a very good product. I am only giving it 4 stars because of the ridiculously short cable, which will force some users to purchase a USB extension lead or a splitter.

Macs are notorious for having problems with their internal DVD burners (Apple please note and get your act together!). After a lot of frustration and several trips to see their Genius Bar man I gave in and started to investigate an acceptable external drive. The reason that I use Amazon is that I can rely on the reviewers comments, a hat tip here to 'David' (14 Jan 2011) for his review in this respect. As an engineer I am always sceptical when I am told it is 'plug and play' as more often than not it is not that simple. This product is the exception. I just set it up and everything worked perfectly (note, I am not an employer of Samsung!!!) I have downloaded CDs to iTunes and burnt DVDs from iMovies and iDVD,without any probs. On another plus-note these were done at about twice the speed I got from my iMac drive. When you burn, the Mac automatically recognises the external drive and asks you to choose this or the internal oneI have not tried, and have no intention of trying, dual layer burning which I am informed this machine will do. On the down side it is a little noisier than the internal drive but no worse than an external HDD. It seems a bit flimsy but this should make me be more careful how I use it. Although it is slim and compact it is another box on the desk. The other reviewers remarks on the dual USB plugs are valid but for me the iMac has a set of USB sockets close together. If yours does not have this arrangement, then order a short extension lead with your order. At about £27 it has worked out to be cheaper than the petrol cost of going to the Apple store. The parcel was delivered in 4 days (including the weekend) on free delivery. It was in perfect, new, condition. The manual turned out to be very concise. It indicates that you plug the USB lead into the ONLY socket at the rear, and to open the tray you press the ONLY button on the front, DOH! I thought that I had been cheated so went to the Samsung web site and downloaded the manual..... it was exactly the same! So i crossed my fingers and flew by the seats of my pants and as mentioned above everything worked. Many thanks to all the earlier reviewers who I read before buying and, I guess like me, wanted to give this product six stars.

First time using this I had absolute hell, being a Mac user, i didn't need to download or install any drivers, so I just plugged it in and hoped that would be that. Sadly, I was wrong, at first I had major problems trying to access discs. Not sure if that was the drive or the USB hub a was using, but whenever i clicked on the drive in finder, finder would crash! After removing the hub, the problem seemed to disappear but still would have issues with some CDs. After using the drive, the problem seemed to of blown over and I must say the drives performance is quite impressive. The read and write speeds are not as fast as a desktop drive but did seem to be faster than my mac's superdrive (before I removed it in favour of an SSD).This drive also has a feature which corrects tilt, meaning discs don't become as scratched compared to an older drive which wouldn't have this feature.Another problem with Mac though, is that once a disc is in the drive, you cannot use the eject button on the drive itself, you have to eject it in finder or disk utility. Although not a massive problem, it should work. I have found that this is caused by the Mac refusing to eject the disc because it is still 'mounted' and so will override the button. Ejecting using finder (thankfully) works perfectly. The drive itself is a perfect size, quite thin, no bigger than it needs to be and looks very nice. Only disadvantage is that it uses 2 USBs compared to the Apple external disc drive which manages to use only one. On laptops with only 2 USB ports (like mine and many others), this is an annoying problem.

Received within 3 days of dispatch. The Samsung SE-S084F came up straight away with my Windows XP SP3 laptop - no problems at all. The case is indeed slim and more robust than I expected. Operation was quieter than expected. The disk tray requires some care when handling. The USB lead with dual plugs is about 30cm long. Overall, this DVD writer "does what it says on the tin" and represents good value for money. The DVD Writer is marketed by both Samsung and Toshiba under the name TSST - Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology. The DVD writer is supplied with a disk containing Nero software. You need patience as loading the software takes 30-40 minutes. A full installation of this disk occupies about 350MB.I did a custom installation of the Nero Express Essentials 9 software as I am only interested in burning disks. Nero Express Essentials 9 occupies about 170 MB. Beware that the software installation fills your hard drive with 1.4GB of temporary files! I used "Wise Disk Cleaner Free" afterwards to get rid of these temporary files. Also, Nero Express Essentials 9 is not very user friendly, particularly when trying to navigate and select files to burn. It takes about 18 minutes to fill a 4x DVD with data using Nero. For die-hard XP users, I find "CDBurnerXP" (free download) much easier software to use and only occupies 12MB on your hard-drive. It takes about 21 minutes to fill a 4x DVD with data using CDBurnerXP, so is marginally slower.I ended up unistalling the Nero software.

A couple of years ago year the CD / DVD drive on my MacBook packed in, prompting me to shop for an external unit to replace it. In terms of my criteria, I simply wanted something that would be cheap to buy, and also be compatible with Macs as well as PCs. My research led me to Samsung's SE-S084 which had a number of positive reviews here on amazon. The SE-S084 not only *plays* CD and DVDs, but it also *records* them too - the CD write speed is a respectable 24x, whilst the DVD write speed maxxes out at 8x. Appearance wise, the drive is very pleasant looking indeed - it's small, and clad in an unobjectionable black plastic. Measuring only 14 x 14 x 2 cms the device is ultra transportable, and as it draws its power from the USB cable (included) there's no need for an external power supply. Discs are loaded into the device via the opening tray which is accessed by a small button on the front of the unit. Once the button is pressed, the tray quickly pops open - it's then up to the user to fully extend the drawer and subsequently push it closed once the disc is in place.I've had no issues with the device regarding performance, and have found it to read all the discs I've entered into it (barring blu-ray) without problems. In use, the product is quiet, and doesn't get excessively hot. From the perspective of reliability, the SE-S04 works as well today as it did when it was new, and I would have no hesitation in highly recommending it to others.

Desperately needed to buy a dvd drive after my pc's internal packed up on me and based my decision on all the positive reviews here. Package arrived super quick. Suprised by the short usb lead connecting to the computer as i actually wanted the drive living next to my monitor but I will just have to purchase an extension. Currently burning a dvd: the device is relatively quiet but I was horrified for a few seconds when I first tried to burn the disk and the estimated time on my screen said 445 minutes!!!! I panicked, thought I needed to buy another, faster burner as that length of time is crap then it recalculated the time to 12 minutes which is much quicker than my clamped-out pc's which took about 25 minutes to burn 4GBs!!!Happy days!! I followed the advice here of not even loading the installation cd instead just connecting the usbs to the relevant ports, checked the new drive was detected in my Device Manager and started burning. Simples.Update: Urgh, how could I use that word "Simples" as seen in the above review... apologies, but please realise my above review was written in the height of those meer cats and "Simples" wasn't used by the general public! (Apologies for using "Happy days" as well!!! Shameful!)Anyway, back to the review... It's been a few years now and this items is still going strong and so much faster than my PC's. I'll be purchasing a new desktop so this will become redundant but it served me well. A good buy!

This is my first external DVD drive Samsung SE-S084F External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer - Whiteand I have no hesitation to say that it a beautiful piece of equipment. Full marks to Amamzon for superfast prime delivery. As other reviewers have mentioned make sure, that you have 2 adjascent USB port on your computer before buying this.(1) Its very silent(2) Doesn't get hot even after extended use(3) Immediately recognised and functional.(4) Nice packaging box for long term safe storage.(5) Fast enough in speed.(5) Comes with an extended plug in option which is nice if you have space contraints in the immediate vicinity of your parent device.I have used it on : (1) Win 7 laptop and (2)Asus EP121 slate running Win7Cons: Comes with a cd supposedly having user manual, but actually its simple a weblink to a rather timid webpage. But I guess you don't really need to dwell deep into the manual of such a simple device (unless of course something goes wrong).Update: I found out that even with one USB connected, the drive worked well with a netbook and installed the programs smoothly. Full marks for this!

This will prove handy for both my acer netbook and acer nettop - helps with creating system restore discs and also for use with software installs from cd/dvd, as well as ripping my cd/dvd collection to an external HDDThe unit is very stylish, slimline, is powered off the USB. Note: it may take one or two USB ports to power this unit - but the cable is supplied to enable this.I have burnt several DVD's with this - after a problem with the very first burn (probably due to me messing with several apps whilst burning) the unit has performed well - and all subsequent discs have been burnt and verified OK on first attempt. It's like most other DVD drive that I have - which can be noisy when spinningat full speed.Inserting and removing discs is adequate but a bit fidly - however that could be my own dexterity and me being used to more stable internal drives. The drive is: plug and play , lightweight and easy to exchange between multiple machines.I've not tried playing a cd or dvd movie direct from the drive - as I'm mainly ripping them to a HDD

The new Samsung SE-S084F DVD writer/player was being offered by Amazon at a cheaper price than the earlier model it replaced. It is a brilliant product BUT do not use the enclosed Nero software, it took 3 hours to download (yes 3 hours on a new netbook)and when it finally downloaded the DVDs would play but without sound and you were directed via a link to Nero's website to purchase the full version to enable you to play the DVD correctly. It then took a further 2 hours to uninstall the software, all the time reminders coming up about how good Nero is!, there were still traces of Nero after I had uninstalled it particularly in "autoplay" and I am unable to get rid of them.I finally installed a free download called "VLC player" from [...] which took 8 minutes to download and works perfectly. Steer well clear of the Nero software but the actual DVD writer/player works brilliantly and seems very well made,it includes the twin ended USB cable necessary for operation, it would be nice if there had been a protective sleeve to keep it in.

I bought one of these to go with my ASUS EeePC1001PX netbook, and have been not disappointed. The drive is compact, measuring 14 x 14 x 2cm, and lightweight. Although supplied with a split USB cable with two standard A-connectors, I have always used it with just a standard A - Mini B cable, and it works fine.Initially, it wouldn't play DVDs on my netbook using Windows Media Player, but after I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, it worked ok. Playing & downloading from music & data CDs is trouble-free, as is recording CDs & DVDs. I have tried it with CD-R media at 24* speed, and DVD+R at 8* speed, and it performed well. The unit is attractive, and well built. Pressing the button on the front ejects the drawer,to reveal a standard drive mechanism, and when the disc is pushed down, it clicks into place on the hub. This is a well-made, lightweight unit, and good value for money. So far, it has proved very reliable, and in my experience does not need a split USB lead- so it will work fine with just one available USB port.

I only bought this to burn disks as I don't watch DVD's on my netbook. And rather than install the software that came with the drive, I have quite happily been using ImgBurn. As such, I have no comments about the included software. However, the drive itself has been most useful. So far I have only had one dud and that was most certainly because I sat to hard on the sofa the drive was sitting on and made it jump too hard. Maybe a more expensive drive would have been able to recover. Maybe not.I haven't managed to get it to burn anything at 8x. 4-5x seems more like the norm. But there could be a number of factors to cause this and it hasn't bothered me enough to investigate. Also, when I bought the drive,I hadn't realised what lightscribe was. If I had, I might have been tempted to pay more for a drive that supports it. But then again, at the time I really wanted something as cheap as possible yet reliable. So far, this drive has managed to meet that criteria.

I say it does everthing, I havent yet used it for everything, but plugged it in and it immediately started playing the dvd in my lap top, using one of my installed progammes which I chose from the menu which popped up. I bought if for my netbook but haven't used it on that yet, neither have I taken advantage of its other functions, but so far so good. Can't foresee any probs either, but wonder like others why it has to have two usb connections to be used simultaneously? I imagine this is due to the dual Write/Read functions. It was quiet also, no noise at all. Seems like a great quality item and I am very pleased so far.It would be worth having a soft case for this as it is slippery and can slip off any surface onto the floor, thus breaking. I would therefore maintain it in its original packaging sleeve, adjusted with tape or something so it doesnt come off, and a hole made where the lead emerges, or make your own.

Arrived really quickly. Running this on an Apple Powerbook G4 15" 1.67 GHz and so far so good. Needs to be plugged into 2 usb ports (hub required as ports are on either side of powerbook) to get enough power to just play a dvd, but my powerbook is getting on a bit which might have something to do with it. The Samsung drive is nice and compact. I didn't intend to take it with me anywhere but now I'm tempted to just for fun! The drive has a matte black surface finish which I prefer over the glossy black that was described in the product info. Runs quietly and does not get hot. I don't burn that many discs, mainly import CDs into iTunes and watch movies. Got this because my powerbook's superdrive finally gave out after a good innings.Under £30 makes this a brilliant buy. Oh and I also like the little click it makes when the disc is ejected. Hope this review helps someone.

I needed a spare drive because making temp images on my laptop then burning each of them one at a time was time consuming to say the least. This way I could rip and burn at the same time plus it would double as a portable drive for my netbook.I'm impressed to say the least. Not only did it work right out of the box so no drivers to install and what not (both laptop and netbook run on Windows 7), its whisper quite even on full tilt and is about as small as the discs it burns.A "USB Y cable" -one end for power and the other for data- is included and required to power the drive properly so make sure you have 2 free ports on your computer, preferably next to each other.Aside from a minor but unavoidable limitation with USB 2.0 technology this is by far the best slimline drive out there for the price, take my word for it and save yourself the research ^^
