I've had a Wireless `n' router for some months now and although the speed benefits of upgrading to wireless `n' from wireless `g' were obvious from the moment I made the switch, the connection between the router and my old wireless dongle was unreliable and the signal strength was patchy. Not wanting to do away with the faster connectivity that `n' brings, I instead decided to do away with my old kit and buy brand new - in this case, Asus's USB-N53U Wi-Fi dongle to accompany their DSL-N55U modem router (ASUS DSL-N55U - 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Router ADSL 2/2+ Modem Router, 802.11n, Gigabit Lan, Gigabit LAN, 2x USB, Print FTP UPnP Server, HD Streaming, 3 Year Warranty). In appearance, the N53 dongle is.... well, it's a dongle - a black plastic slab that plugs into a USB port on your PC and then protrudes somewhat annoyingly from it. As with the N55 router, the N53's styling is slightly off-the-wall; a tartan / diamond patchwork moulded into the plastic, that some people may call modern, but I see it as being slightly reminiscent of the 80's, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on your age! Two blue lights peeking through the top complete the package, one that stays on constantly as a power indicator and the other that flashes during exchanges of data.As I wasn't connected to the internet at the time, no Windows drivers were available when I plugged the dongle in, so instead I used the drivers supplied on the included CD. I also took the opportunity to install the Asus USB-N53 Utility software at the same time, giving me control of the device at its base level and allowing me to do things like scanning for networks, checking on the network status, adjusting settings and so forth. The software also allowed me to use the dongle in `Software Access Point' mode, effectively turning it into a wireless access point for devices to connect to, much like a wireless router. You don't need to use this software if you don't want to, as the start-up wizard gives you the option of installing only the device's drivers and using the Windows wireless utility instead, but there is more functionality if you do choose to install it.Whereas the speed and reliability of the connection between my old router and dongle was somewhat haphazard, the connection between the two Asus components has been stellar, once I had configured the router correctly. No dropped connections, no signal strength issues, and no poor connection speeds. Said speed fluctuates only very slightly depending on where I am in the house, so all in all the connection has never been anything less than impressive; I don't get the 600 Mbps the router and dongle are allegedly capable of (I'm not even sure how to achieve that as the manuals for both aren't exactly detailed), but I do get a virtually constant 300, even from two rooms away. I keep the router on dual-band (2.4 / 5 GHz) mode with dual 20/40 MHz channels, and tend to pick the best band as the situation dictates, although I generally stick to the 2.4 GHz one as it is usually stronger.I also tried the N53 with my older (non-Asus) router and the results were a bit better than they had been with the old dongle but nowhere near as sharp as with the Asus. I kept it in wireless `n' mode and the connection speed was improved, but only by a fairly modest amount, while the connection strength was still pretty variable. It seems that my old dongle that wasn't entirely to blame for my previous Wi-Fi woes, and you too may not see much of an improvement if you buy an N53 but don't upgrade your router at the same time. The N53 comes with a USB extension lead that Asus say allows you to adjust the dongle for enhanced reception. While the lead is pitifully short, it is at least of the `fixed-flexible' variety, so it will stay in the position you set it in. Then again, having a lead so short seems to defeat the purpose of having one, as it barely moves the dongle away from your PC at all. I have a 2-metre cable that came with another wireless dongle and I tend to use this if I need to get increased range or better reception, so getting one like this with the Asus would have been nice.I don't think the N53 would have offered much to me if I hadn't upgraded my router at the same time, so if you're thinking of buying one it might be worth bearing this in mind. But in combination with the N55 router, the difference in the connection has been like night and day. It's a bit of an ugly duckling, at least in my eyes, but pretty is as pretty does, and as a wireless dongle the N53 does pretty well. Just don't expect it to completely rejuvenate your network access if your router isn't up to scratch.

This both very easy to use and very powerful. To install, load the CD and install the driver, then plug the device into a USB port. After that you can go to its control center but to be honest I found it quicker to just use the Windows usual LAN icon (at the bottom of the Taskbar). Right click on it, choose your router and connect. I have a -ac ASUS router and have gained significantly both in speed (20%) and coverage (2 more bars) compared to what was available from my laptop Wifi card. The litte UBS dock makes it easy to tuck away the receiver, which is smart but not small!By far the best external wifi receiver I have seen so far.PS: I have a complicated set up, with two different extenders (Billion and Netgear)due to the house being very long and on two different mains circuits. This works beautifully with everything, not just the ASUS router (itself fantastic, by the way, see my review if you're thinking of buying it).

Here's how you get this device working with GNU/Linux:Step 1. Plug it in.Step 2. There's no step 2.What can I say? It Just Works, in fact I'm using it right now to send this. Even when the wireless AP is two floors down and behind several closed doors. Although the speeds are faster the nearer you are to the AP, obviously. You'll need kernel 2.6.31 or above, and NetworkManager or Wicd, but any Linux distro newer than two years old should have that already. I used Ubuntu 11.10. I plugged it in, and NetworkManager immediately told me networks were available, so I picked mine, entered the WPA2 password, and it connected.Done.It took me longer to open the box than it did to get it working under GNU/Linux.I can't vouch for how well it works with Windows, since I don't use that OS, and never will.

Though I should let people know that the device works well with Mac Mavericks 10.9I purchased the adaptor when the onboard wifi card (airport) failed on my 2008 aluminium macbook. I'm running an up to date version of mac Mavericks.I had to install the software on the provided cd to enable to adaptor to work. The latest install on the disk is for OS 10.7. I installed that and it is working well regardless of the fact I am using 10.9.Be aware with a mac you can't use the OS's native airport wifi software which displays on the top of the screen. You have to use the provided software which sets itself to autoload on install.A good device that has brought me a bit of time until I need to buy a newcomputer

purchased this for my wdtv live media player...plugged it in,ran the set up for wireless connection on the wdtv live, just needed to enter my ssid, after that,my network worked str8 away with the media player..it streams films and music flawlessly, although have to say that i have vm 30mb with the new super hub...it streams 720p and 1080p with no trouble wotsoever..and plays any kind of music file (wma-flac-sacd) with no loss of origional quality...i used the same adapter to connect my px710w artisan printer to my wireless network and set up was a breeze...i absolutely recommend this adapter for all your wireless needs.......

I was given the task of purchasing the best WiFi adapter for my boss, did a load of research and ended up buying one of these. I was amazed at how this is no different to having a wired ethernet connection for speed. I had to speed check it a number of times before I believed it. After all nobody expects a wireless connection to be faster than a wired one!? The WiFi on my iPhone 6S in the same locations seem to drop out when connected to any 4 of our various BT routers but the signal on this ASUS USB-AC68 is 100% stable. The design looks quite transformer style but it works great.

Well I am on my 3rd wireless adapter for my PC. After doing some research and finally choosing the ASUS what can I say?Wow, I am blown away. So fast on the internet and does not drop out and I am on 5G (which my Netgear A6210 Genie couldn't really handle as kept dropping out and so slow, even though it was supposed to be fast). Even my Canon printer is fast and scanning I can't keep up! I can 100% recommend this especially as my pc is upstairs at the back of the house, whilst my router is at the front of the house downstairs. My PC has never ever been so fast on the internet.

This USB network adapter worked just fine. Plug and play in windows 8.1 which is more than can be said for the network controller on my Acer aspire with windows 8.1. I have all ready stated my dislike of windows 8, with my preference for windows 7 which does at least work and install perfectly from systems disks. .I was forced into buying the Asus network adaptor because windows 8 would not install the driver for the network controller, though it is possibly on the windows 8 installation disks, or possibly not, who knows?

Had tried 3 of TP Link dual-band USB dongles before, but the the 5ghz soon failed and I could only connect using the 2.4ghz channels which defeated the purpose of my purchases. Few problems with this Asus dongle. The Asus control panel is easy to use, and the 5ghz channel works well... get 115mbps wireless speed on a 120mbps broadband VM SuperHub. Occasionally it cannot find the 5ghz signal, but just take the laptop upstairs to the SuperHub and it connects fine, as I say, just occasionally this happens.

I use my pc for work and gaming every day, its on for 12 hours a day at least.Easy to install - remember to put the disk in first and plug in the usb dongle when it says, setup around 5 minutes.Speedtest score - 259mb down, 21mb up when in the room above my router with virgin 300 broadband at 10:30pmDivision 2 and Counter Strike - no lag or ping spikesIt's big to carry around, as tall as an iphone 5s and a 3rd of the width when folded upIt's expensive but worth it

Picked this up for about 20 quid and couldn't have expected more. Great design, extension cable is short, however fixes into the position you choose so does help. My only issue is i had hoped range would be a bit better, but has been a great upgrade from my previous wireless adapter, plus its asus so should be build like a rock... sure does feel it. Overall i give it a 4.5 but simply because of the range. I doubt you'll be able to find much better for the same price.

Win 7 installed a generic driver whereas the accompanying CD installed an ASUS specific driver. Could not connect at all under WEP but had no problems after shifting to WPA2only. Connects at 270 Mbps to a D-Link dual band N router about 20 m away and is dual band, so connects on two channels. Works better out of the box than an extended range Linksys that I tried first, and which refuses to reconnect after the computer has been in standby for a few hours.

My laptop couldnt connect to the 5G wave of my wifi, only the 2G which was awful! So I bought this, and being the completely clueless person that I am when it comes to computers, I emailed the sellers asking how to install and get it working. They replied so quickly and sent all the info I needed and now it woks perfectly. I never lose wifi now, I'd definitely recommend this product

I bought this to allow my Synology NAS to be wirelesly connected.I plugged it into the extension cable and then to the NAS, logged into DSM and then I only needed to enter my WiFi details in Network. That was it. Has been running flawlessly and smoothly since. For £22 pounds I liked the simplicity and no-issue functionality. Plus it looks the part too!Pretty happy.

I managed to acheive 60Mbits/s with this installed in my new HP Envy (which unfortunately had "substandard" wifi - definitely slower anyway!)Brilliant differencee to the system overall.Replaces a BT dongle which did the same job on my older Dell machine but which was SO much larger and sticky-outy!Dead chuffed!(So far anyway)
