Price purchased £127.07Update 23 April 2020I have 8x 6GB versions of the drive and 4x 4GB versions of the driveEach of the drives is now out of warranty. At this point I have had no failures. Each of the drives is either being used in an 8 bay NAS or as active drives on my PC or as Backup drives on my PC. The PC drives are used daily for between 12 -16 hours a day, but are not the system drives. All other drives are used in mirrored pairs in a rotation of 16 hours each 3 weeks. I've clarified this because I am not in a position to identify the potential for use 24x7.********************************Date of original review 6 March 2016The drive information on Amazon the drives are described as only tested for NAS with 1-5 drive bays. However, on a support page it clarifies that the Red series are tested for 1-8 bay NAS and there is also a link to a NAS compatibility list [Amazon won't allow this link].To find it search for "Compatibility list for the WD Red NAS Hard Drive id=9758" in Google without the quote marks. This appears to have been tested for the latest drives with NASWare 3.0 although I have been using 4 mirrored pairs of NASWare 2.0 drives without any issues. In NAS systems with 24x7 operation vibration is a factor in terms of reliability which is why NASWare 2.0 drives were recommended for drive enclosures of no more than 5 drives. NASWare 3.0 drives improved on the ability to manage the effect of vibration on the drives and this is why they increased rated these newer drives for up 8 drives per NAS enclosure.I had the opportunity to purchase the retail drive at the same price as the OEM drive so I was able t compare what you get in comparison to buying the OEM version of the drive. Looking at reviews of the OEM version of this drive there has been some confusion about whether the extra cost is worth it.To clarify what the differences were I rang Western Digital support. They told me that different countries have different warranty periods. Red series drives in the USA have a 12-month warranty and then you pay a little extra to add the extra warranty. I have bought more than 10 of the Red series of various sizes 3TB, 4TB and 6TB OEM. Each of these drives have registered for 3-year warranties.WD support suggested that Amazon sourced their OEM drives from different countries and that about 50% of them would register as OEM and only have 12 month’s warranty. Amazon identifies that the drives only come with a 12-month warranty so if you register one and it only gives you a 12 -month warranty you have no grounds to complain. So in summary spending the extra £14.00 for the retail version gives you the peace of mind of knowing that you definitely have a three-year warranty. It also comes with drive screws and standard retail packaging. The OEM drives generally come with plastic mounts, on either end, to isolate them from damage to the containing boxes. The retail version plastic support mounts are on the side running the full length of the drive see photos.I think whether you purchase this retail version or opt for the OEM version depends on whether you need a set of screws to mount the drive and more importantly whether you are willing to take the risk that you may end up with a drive which only registers a 12-month warranty. I would suggest that buying OEM drives directly from Amazon, as opposed to buying from a Market Place seller, might increase the chance of getting a three-year warranty and a safely packaged drive. In terms of performance these drives run quietly and quickly. They have a variable speed between 5,400-5,900rpm. So these are not the fastest drives, which are the black series, but seem to perform quickly in everyday use for Desktop (Windows 10 & 8.1), and NAS (Network Attached Storage).

I have my OS on an NVMe M.2 SSD and files (media, docs, music) on this WD Red NAS Hard Drive. This solution allows fast boot times and allows me to work on OS and data separately.· While a hard disk drive might not give as impressive results as a SSD - it is still the most affordable storage medium in price per gigabyte.· The 4TB Western Digital Red NAS HDD is a great option - if you are searching for a high-capacity, fast performance consumer hard drive.? I have been using it for almost 17 months now and have nothing to complain about.✔ Pros:+ Massive storage capacity+ High efficiency with reliability+ Advanced error correction+ Low power consumption+ Perfect for home and business use✖ Cons:- No complaintsIf something goes wrong,I will update this review... but so far, so good.

I researched this drive as well as others before deciding on this one. My reseasrch started because I had a Seagate 3TB external that failed. While reading about the backup drive I duscovered the model and serial number of my drive had a 32% failure rate. That is not a typo. 32%. Further investigation revealed that the backup drive was only intended to spin when in use. I had mine plugged into a Drobo 5N and was nearly always on and never thought about it again until it failed. So my research for a new drive focused on drives and manufacturers that had a good track record and reliablity in server configurations which do spin all the time.I chose the 4TB here based on customers reviews in server use and this drive was the best price for the TB I could find.

This is exactly what to expect from a nas drive. It was easy to install. As simple as pluging it in to the relevant cable in your computer. It was detected by windows and didnt need any complicated installation. It was surprisingly fast for a hdd. And can't hear it at all when the computer is on. I got this on offer and think it is excellent value for around £100

Great product. Purchased as a hot spare for my 8 bay Synology NAS to complement the existing drives. WD provide advance replacements under warranty in certain countries but I have a device in a country where this doesn't happen so having the hot spare gives extra protection.

I had a 4gb deskstar NAS drive before that you could hear spin up from idle monstrously loudly. This spins up quicker from idle, and you really can't hear it at all. As I'm going for a semi-passive silent pc build, this is exactly what I wanted.

Does what it says on the box. Not much I can really say. Nicely boxed on arrival. Drops in, works fine. Like I say, does what it says on the box. As with all storage devices only time will tell but no worries so far.

Been using this since November - it is being used as part of a Linux Home Server - it has had no downtime yet, and is still quiet as ever. Can pick up in noise when the room DB drops, but that is to be expected.

29.4.2017

Good solid product, as you'd expect from WD.Makes a bit of noise as it starts up, but ok after it's up to speed.I've got 2 of these in a Qnap which has been running for about 3 months without any issues

25.5.2016

There's not a lot to review, I plugged them in, turned them on, they spun up and worked . Performance is good, noise is acceptable. They're full with no bad sectors, exactly what I expected

1.1.2019

No complaints. WD have always proved reliable for me and this unit has run 24/7 since first installed without throwing any errors. A lot more expensive now than when i bought it.

4.1.2020

Typical WD quality, used as general storage not primary boot drive. Used for home built NAS server, running 24/7. Reliable and quiet so far.

5.3.2020

easy to install wrong screws for caddy meant i had to buy some. be aware you might get round head rather than counter-sunk screws

14.8.2016

What can I say, The best drives for your NAS. 3 years warranty and at a great price.

11.11.2017

Functions as expected, used within a enclosure to USB 3. Had no problems so far.
