Straight out of the box, this takes a little practise to get the hang of, it doesn't come with any instruction manual, but it's not too difficult to get the hang of by looking at the pictures on the box and by a little trial and error.Once you work out that you need to pinch to top silver parts (one of which is moveable) to open the hole for the pencil to insert it. The part I didn't get at first is that you need to pull the front out forwards at the same time otherwise it doesn't really grip the pencil or sharpen it.You can adjust the mechanism to give a very sharp point or a blunt end with a twist of the red section on the back in the centre of the handle. You can also remove the mechanism if you get a lead stuck quite easily. This has been designed to work best clamped to a table, but I have tried it without the clamp and it works well that way too - but if you want to go through a whole set of pencils for example, then having it set up on the edge of a table works really well. I have tried this with thicker and triangular pencils and all sharpen really well. The sharpenings fall into a drawer at the bottom and come out in thin corkscrew curls which my girls are fascinated by - as they are so different from standard shavings. There is a visual warning not to put your fingers into the hole the pencils go in and this was a good reminder to my girls to tell them that this really wouldn't be a good idea and I then opened up the sharpener to show them to the mechanism so that they could see why it wasn't a good idea.I would definitely recommend this over a basic standard sharpener or even a basic electric sharpener as this gives consistently well-sharpened points and you can see and feel when it is ready as you turn the handle. The only criticisms I have are that weirdly on the side of the box it calls itself an electric sharpener for pencils, which is really isn't (presumably a typo?) and I wish that it came with proper instructions, as this would have been useful in making sure I got it working properly.

I use the British Library a lot and one is only allowed to use pencil. Biros and markers are prohibited. Thus, I need a stead stream of pencils, and all too often, blunt pencils get discarded as pencil sharpeners disappear, or fails to sharpen properly, with constantly breaking over-sharp nibs, or the lead breaking further down. This pencil sharpener is the real McCoy, professional number, the type you see at British Library nailed to the desk for library users, guarded over by beady-eyed magnanimous librarians, who know they have saved you from having to go to the BL shop to buy a new pencil or sharpener. It has springlike guage at the top which you grip to insert your pencil. When released it holds your pencil in place tightly. The insertion is from the left, if you are right-handed, so that the winding action anti-clockwise with your main hand is on the right (or vice versa if you are left handed). I have not screwed in the clamp yet, which keeps it steady, but it works fine without. Ho wever, you need to hold it with your left hand if sharpening the pencil with your right, to keep it steady. There is a red button adjuster that allows you to select a blunt nib or a long point depending on which way you turn it. A detachable tray which collects the shavings from the pencil is quite deep and transparent so one can see how full up it is.I found the device very sharp, made a lovely fine point to my British Library pencil and the sharpening mechanism well-designed and a pleasure to use.

This Westcott Pencil Sharpener is a decent enough product from this American brand famous for their school and office products. Founded in 1872 Westcott is now part of the large Acme United Corporation and this Chinese made sharpener is a product of their European division. This is a manual pencil sharpener that is suitable for use with pencils having a diameter of 7 to 12 mm and it is designed to be used fixed to a table using the detachable clamp. This sharpener is very similar to the ones we used at school many years ago and it has worked well with the selection of pencils I've tried with it so far. This sharpener is good value at around eight pounds fifty currently and works as I expected – but do take heed of the warning symbol and don't put your finger in the sharpening hole! The cutter assembly is easy to remove should it become jammed with broken pencil leads, and the lead style can be adjusted by turning the red regulator knob to the right for for blunt or left for a longer point. This is a handy device for home, school or office.

My son is very pleased with this sharpener. It can be used clamped to a desk (with supplied fittings) or not. The operation is really simple - squeeze together the two chrome levers and pull out. Insert pencil and then turn the handle.A couple of the pencils we tried seem to sharpen slightly more on one side but we have used it about 20 times now and only had issues with 2 pencils. My daughter has the Helix pencil sharpener ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Helix-Desktop-Sharpener-Color-vary/dp/B0027VSHCS )and in my view for £1 more is a better product. It has a better more solid feel and in the 20 months we have been using it it has never failed to work.

Rotary mechanical pencil sharpeners are nothing new but the subtle difference with this unit from Westcott that makes it perfect for me and the kids is the ability to adjust the sharpness of the tip.A simple twist on the side of the handle moves a little red attachment which caps the sharpening. Everything I've thrown at this sharpener is perfect, school pencils, colouring pencils and even thicker solid crayon colouring pencils.Simple, effective and perfect for me at its job.

A very dependable and well designed item - after dallying with a battery powered pencil sharpener I was really glad to return to the manual hand cranked fold. This is perfectly reliable, well designed and ergonomic and does the thorough and well executed job on a range of pencils: make sure your office has one and you will wonder why you ever went battery powered. Recommended.

Only had a week so can't speak to longevity but for £8 this seems like a decent sharpener. Spring mechanism keeps pencils in-place well, sharpens to a decent points. Also comes with a vice clip to attach the sharpener to table which isnt in the picture (but I wouldn't bother using).

Takes me back to my school days! An excellent machine with a good sized 'bin' for the pencil leaves. Simple to use and a good strong clamp. It means I can now sharpen pencils with ease and not end up snapping the points off.

this sharpener is great I use it all the time when I haven't got my electric one handy never had a problem with broken nibs but does not sharpen pastel base pencils as you need a special sharpener for pastel pencils

Our little sharpeners often broke the tips while sharpening, this one sharpened 50 colouring pencils with one break - so much better. It has a large rotating spiral blade that makes all the difference.

Fixes firmly to a desk with the attachment provided, sharpens beautifully. Now my arthritic fingers won't be dropping pencil sharpeners and shavings on the floor! It even holds my fattest pencil!

when we received it, I have spent ~2 hours with my kid - we found and sharpened all his pencils! Just couple of spins and pencil is sharp! takes literally 20 seconds to sharpen one pencil.

This sharpener does what is says on the tin (well box!) and you can adjust the length of your lead if needed with an easy to use adjusting mechanism
