I bought this skimmer last August for my Topfin 25 gallon bowfront tank. I was skeptical about the airflow design of Tunze Nano 9001 compared to the powerhead turbo /venturi systems that I have used before. There were no recent reviews except for a brief review on YouTube. So I took the risk of ordering this unit since Tunze is a well known product in the industry.Assembly:Upon assembly of this unit I was debating which position of the pump should I use, since there are 3 ways you can mount it to the body. I finally end up using the conventional way as stated in the manual. It kept me thinking as to how it actually works because its has this air inlet hose plugged to an impeller that has no motor attached to it?It took me sometime to attach it with the magnet because the air inlet hose keep floating and pushes off the body. I found out the best way is to put the collector cup while mounting with the magnet to the tank.Operation:When I first turned on the skimmer I saw some kind of compressed fine air coming out of the transparent cover. When I adjusted the air inlet that's when I knew it was already running, seeing the skimmate rise off the cup. It is an effective and quiet nano skimmer with air pump technology, without the use of a cumbersome air-wood !I recommend this skimmer to any nano tank owners.

I have to admit I love it but could be a bit better, this unit is real dependent on the level in your nano reef this may require the use of a macro ato. Which adds to the cost. After install a macro ato this unit is carefree. The other issue is having under the water line I normally turn off the filter to feed the fish and guess what it floods the skimmer. Not sure but to me for the price it should not be so picky on the level of the tank. If I known this I could have maybe made a different choice on another nano unit that is not as picky and wont flood every time my level increases during feeding. So a bit disappointing and is the reason for 4 stars. Now for the good, with the lid close I cannot really hear this unit running. Which is awesome because my tank is right next to me. It is small but not supper small read up if it will work on your tank. Overall it does work good at removing waste.

Great little skimmer for nanos and AIO tanks. Only 48 hours and it's already pulling Coke colored skimmate from my BioCube 29 which receives weekly 25% water changes. There were microbubbles initially, but that stopped a few hours after being installed. Skimming consistency so far is leaps and bounds above the Coralife airstone skimmer. I also want to point out that you no longer have to make multiple modifications to the new Coralife BioCube's to get this to fit next to the InTank media basket. The new ones almost have enough room to make it work out of the box. Rather than the 3 cuts that used to be necessary, only the thin piece separating the second and third chambers needs cut and snapped now.You no longer have to cut the top and bottom tabs on the InTank side and switch to the smaller water diverter. This is good news for those whose tanks are already set up and full of water.

So superior to any other small skimmer. I have tried them all. Flushed a lot of money down the drain with others. This one is as close to perfect as I can imagine. Mainly, it actually removes skimmate!!! whoooo! No constant adjustments. I do have it in my rear baffled area with a constant water level. It would not work well if water level fluctuates. It has stopped working once due to my negligence of not cleaning as recommended and the airline getting clogged by a sponge. Clean it periodically and you will be fine. Unlike most, it is actually possible to take it apart and get it back together without much cussing or needing 4 hands. The main feature is that it is SILENT. We have the tank right by the couch, and this got a thumbs up from my husband who cannot tolerate rattles or weird noises.

I purchased this for my Biocube 29 HQI. I had to modify the lip of the 3rd chamber with a dremel tool to allow it to slide in and out without too much hassle. I also changed out the air intake tube to be much, much longer than the previous one. After it broke in and I fiddled with the Tunze 9001, I finally got it working to produce some nice protein sludge. If you're looking for a SMALL protein skimmer that actually works, this is a great option. My chief complaint is that the lid to the collection cup goes on really tight---even with the slightest pressure placed on it, prompting a complete removal of the cup if I want to see how full it's getting. It's also prone to releasing microbubbles into my system if I touch anything about it.Otherwise, it's fairly effective and a good skimmer.

Bought it from Amazon "second hand new condition" so that helped a little with the price. Skims much better than the air lift one I was using earlier. Two days in and I'm getting a good, dark skimmate. Thing is, I don't have a sump so I wanted something discrete to hang in the corner out of the way. It fits very nicely, form factor is very small, which is good since the tank is only 25 gal or so. The only niggling I'm having is I'm using the Surface Kit (9001.520) with it, which does a good job of cleaning the surface film. But out of the whole thing, all of dark gray plastic, the end-cap at the bottom is the only piece made of bright clear/white plastic (see picture). Gaaaack. What the heck?I hope some algae will find a home there and cover it up...

I have a Nuvo Fusion 20 from Innovative Marine, and this skimmer has been a great addition. It doesn't really fit without some modifications. I purchased two Sicce .5 pumps to replace the stock split pump and to create space for this. After removing the split pump, it fits right in the middle chamber. I superglued the magnet to the side of the unit and it holds very firmly in place. From day one it started producing a nice darkish skim, and it has only improved since then. Incredibly easy to set up and get running on day one. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone with a nano reef, and I'd say it's the best option for all the nuvo fusion 20 owners out there.

Works perfect. Can adjust the air intake to make up for placement of skimmer. Meaning if you can't lower the water level and its above the water level line, just adjust the air intake and it will compensate.People complained about having to move the skimmer up and down and not being able to adjust the foam. Well that is not true. The air intake valve is the solution.the skimmer bubbles "macro bubbles" because "micro" means the naked eye can't see them.. So I call them "macro" which can be seen. Anyways, they go away but I put a small piece of black porous sponge in there to help. But I have my skimmer in my display and not in the sump. Works perfect!

Great little skimmer for a nano reef. I have it sitting in my cpr aquafuge 2. Fits nice and stays put. Has a lot of micro bubbles during break in(about a week or so) but have gone away now. Have had more than a few nano skimmers over the years now, but this one is almost silent and can produce pretty dark skimmate. Light tea colored is usually the best you can do with most small skimmers. Plus it's a Tunze! Hands down the best customer service you could ask for. If you ever have a problem or need a part, they'll have you fixed up in a day or two from there Texas location. If your thinking about buying one you won't be disappointed.

So far I have had this skimmer running in my Red Sea Max 130D for just over a week. After taking a couple days to get broken in, it is skimming like a champ. It is doing a much better job than the factor skimmer included with the tank. It was very easy to install though the included directions were a bit vague. Luckily I was able to find a couple of videos on youtube to help. If I had a complaint it would be the size of the collection cup. It is a bit small meaning I have to empty it more often that the skimmers on my other tanks.Overall I would recommend it to anyone with a small tank looking for an easy to set up skimmer.

I tried a few of the cheaper skimmers with pretty lousy results. I had doubts about this one too as it made a terribly noise when first turned on. A good look inside showed the impeller had got knockout out of place in transit.Once it was put in its correct place and powered on again, it was extremely quiet with almost NO micro bubbles. It also works as a very good surface skimmer, so the oily film you get on the surface was gone in no time.It took about 2 to 3 days for mine to bed in and start producing skimate properly, but after that it has been faultless, i am very pleased with it.

The unit arrives wrapped in plastic wrap. While unwrapping it the collection cup fell off and fell about 5 inches into my granite counter top. That shattered the corner leaving it useless. So it had a life of about 20 minutes. The plastic clearly has a curing defect as someone else also complained about their collection cup breaking after a fall. A $2 child's toy is made of better plastic. Very disappointing not only in its short life of usefulness, but in the likelihood of my having to shell out another $20 to get a replacement cup, one that is probably equally defective.

Thought I was going to get away with using just a HOB filter with Purigen media instead of using a protein skimmer in a 20 gallon clownfish and anemone tank. After some research, I gave this a shot, and I'm glad I did. Once you find that "sweet spot" for where it should sit in tank, it works perfectly. I am actually really surprised how well it is working. The only problem I have with it is the design of the water return. It basically returns right to the pump. Otherwise, it is really quite and works great for small tanks. I'd recommend it.

This skimmer is outstanding, have it set up on a 36g bow front, reef plus fish setup. It has been about three full days, the microbubbles in the tank have decreased every day and it is skimming dark brown gunk! No worries of overflowing and spilling on the floor like other hang-on-back setup's. I cannot recommend this skimmer more if you are running a smaller tank, setup is extremely simple and the results are easily attainable. Perfectly clear water and my corals and fish are thriving.

I have this skimmer in a small Aquafuge2, hanging on the back of my 9g nano-reef tank. It replaced an airstone-driven skimmer that just wasn't doing the job, and I'm very happy with the switch. The 9001 works exactly as promised, has a minimul profile, and is as close to silent as you'll get... much quieter than the air pump that was driving my previous skimmer. I'd not hesitate to recommend it to others.
