As other reviews have said, yes, this is not quality scratcher. The bottom is particle board, a few staples are visible at the top from where the twine was attached, and the rope is beginning to fray a little bit where my cat's claws dig in the most. However, for $15, I give it 5 stars. If it was $40, I would probably give it 3.It's a decent size, tall enough that even larger cats can get a good stretch in, and the carpet on it is very soft and differently textured from floor carpet, which is a very valuable quality when you're trying to teach a 7 month old stray that the floor is not okay to scratch but the scratcher is. My set came with the carpet "cap" already on the tube and was a breeze to assemble, even including the twisty thingy you need to screw the bolt through the particle board and into the tube.I've only had it for a few weeks, but it retains its original stability and shows no signs of breaking or falling apart. Like I mentioned, I do have a 7 month old kitten, so this may not be sturdy enough for a very large cat that's an avid scratcher.I originally bought this because I wasn't sure if the my kitten would prefer cardboard or twine. He seems to prefer clawing the cardboard scratcher, but he appreciates using this to stretch and occasionally claw. His favorite use of this post is pouncing on it, climbing up, and biting the top, which is a testament to its at least moderate stability. As an overview, I would definitely buy this again or reccomend it to friends as long as their cats don't go ham on scratching posts. Felix approves of its pounce capacity.

My 7 month cat had previously owned a carpet scratcher. I prefer the durable, cleaner appearance of sisal rope. My cat was unfamiliar with this surface at first. I had to introduce him by flicking his feather wand over the post and have him "accidentally" discover how his claws sink into sisal. He adores it now. He also gets a lot, a whole lot of praise each time he uses it. He no longer uses the top of the couch to clean/stretch his feet. The base is wide, so product is stable. The base fabric is not carpet, but a thin smooth material, attractive neutral color. (Note Trixie products are color-matched to Armakat tree too). Sisal is more durable than carpet. Sisal is unlikely to be used in your human furniture, whereas carpet may be featured on your floors and stairwells. This is important, as sisal will be less confusing to a learning cat. Cats may not be able to differentiate between Berber and Scratching Post. Also sisal can be 're-wrapped, 're-glued.Good tip: your cat may be a vertical, horizontal, or both kind of scratcher. Sometimes when flat scratchers don't work, try a vertical. And always remember stability!Update 08/2016Sisal rope strong, still connected. Used by two cats with daily clawing. After moving to new home, cats started to scratch couch edge, so rather than catch them and chastise, I moved this scratchung post next to area being scratched. It worked immediately, cats solely use post.

UPDATE......... 1 YEAR LATER!After a whole year of my hooligan cats tearing the life out of this Trixie scratching pole they have finally worn it out. Other cat scratchers bought previously to this one lasted a few months before the rope was in tatters so, I've just bought a new one for £13.99 only £1 more than last year and still a bargain! One little tip to making it last longer is to regularly turn the pole around (especially if its against a wall or similar) so they don't cause the ropes to break too quickly.ORIGINAL REVIEW - Sept 2012.Its so hard to find a tall-ish scratching post at a reasonable price but this one fitted the bill for my 2 cats that do like to stretch when they excerise their claws!it was really easy to put together & it has a large square base to balance the pole on (my cats are nutters so i put it against a wall!)At 1st the cats wern't too keen on the new smell in the room but after wiggling cat teasers all around the pole over a couple of days during playtime they soon took to it & now use it all the time (you can rub Cat Nip on it too!).I payed £12.99 for this 62cm pole which is soo cheap compared to all of the others on offer (plus i couldn't find another single pole of this height at all!) and i have found it tough, rough & with long lasting potential. very pleased i bought it. arrived quickly as well.

Update:::: Sept. 2018 The Trixie scratching posts I ordered in 2016 have lasted my cats 2 whole years !!!! I have been ordering the same scratching posts since 2014 since they hold up so much better than any others and you can't beat the price. . They are the best but are starting to show use so I'm ordering 3 new ones......I will tell you theses are the best and really hold up...nice and tall so the cats can stretch up tall and scratch up high....By the way....read my review below because over many years I have ordered the same Trixie scratching posts due to the spectacular way they hold up.Reviews from 2016..... I am moving to another star and leaving the ones I purchased previously behind but my cats love them so I ordered two new ones. The other ones are still holding up strong that I purchased 2 years ago in 2014.....Nothing wrong still with the first two I ordered which I am passing on to a friend. Best made and best priced scratching post I have purchased in over 50 yrs of having cats !! 23 inches tall. Base 16 X 16. I would highly recommended ordering more than one for your home. For those who mentioned screw was missing please look in the bag for a small plastic bag where the screw and an Allen wrench are in it which could accidentally be thrown out.

Recently got a ~2 year old rescue stray cat. She was scratching the couch and so I bought this post along with some sticky paws. Today she approached the scratch post and finally got her to voluntarily scratch it instead of the couch. Here's what I did:- I put the tape on her favorite areas where she was scratching.- Every time she came towards the couch to scratch, usually after her meal, I would gently stop her from scratching it, grab her favorite stringy toy, and dangle it over the post, letting her scratch the post a few times as she played.- Right after that I would also sit next to her and pretend to scratch the post same way she scratches while she watched.I did this over the weekend,so I would be around her all day, and within a day an a half, today she scratched the post all by herself, no toy needed. I'll keep an eye on her and hopefully she'll fully transition to the post and leave the couch alone. As far as the post itself, it's solidly built with a furry base that the cat likes. It's tall enough for her to stretch to her full length (she's a very tall cat, some Bengal in her mix). The rope is tightly wound and seems sturdy. It's also not as ugly as corrugated cardboard (which the cat did not like) so I definitely recommend it.

Bought this some item in April, thought I'd give it a month or so to write a proper review for it, and now its time.Took me about 2minutes to set up, after finnaly realising I had to cut a small hole in its nice fluffy carpet to screw the post in.After that I left it in my room against a wall, and the cat never really took notice of it. So after a week of nothing, I tricked my cat into sctatching it when she was scratching the wall behind it. (my rooms coverd in scratches :( but now she stoped thanks to this) So ya, if that cat ignores it at first, thats normal, she gotta teach her to use it/trick her into sctraching it. So ya, she scratches it EVERYDAY, and it shows no signs of ware and tear, very good tight rope around it. Cat loves it. 5/5:- VERY sturdy product, my cats quite heavy, but this has a nice big base, so it doesn't woble when she leans on it.- VERY soft carpeting on it, attracts that cat to play with it.- Good delivery time, only 1 day late on a 5 day delivery, actually arrived on saturday, posted to my neighbors since I wasn't in (thank you for that).- Tool free set up, very handy.- Good build, good qaulity rope, resists scratches and doesn't ripso tahts all 5 points for 5 stars.

Before buying this, consider the habits of your cat. Do they like to scratch Vertically (garden tree/wall paper) or Horizontally (carpets/stairs)?I have two cats, one which loves to scratch the tree in our garden and another who loves to lie down on the stairs and rip the step next to him to shreds...This product has proved a huge hit with the tree hugger and fingers crossed the stair destroyer will take a shining to it eventually...It's much larger than any Scratching post I've seen available in the shops (it towers over the usual Argos effort) without taking up much floor space and seems to be a quality build.I had hoped that this would prevent the stair shredding from continuing, but so far the culprit hasn't paid it much attention.I know that horizontal step shaped scratching posts are available, however I'm not keen on attaching one of these to the stairs due to the tripping hazard and we don't really have anywhere else suitable to place it.I think I may have to invest in a scratcher mat before the Winter months kick in...To sum up, if you're going to buy a vertical scratching post, and have particularly large/tall cats like I do, then this is the post for you!

So I too got this item with no screw which is really pathetic as there are reviews going back to at least 1 year of buyers not getting a screw! FIX UP SELLERS!!I got this item via Amazon and it was the last one: when I received it, it felt like it was second hand - the plastic packaging was open and there was a bit of dust on the post. Was a little annoyed but Im not expecting it to last for years; I currently have a big scratching tree post that Ive had for about a year which I still have but its now torn in many places (which is expected if a cat is continuously scratching it!). I wanted something smaller for when my cat and I go away and to also put by my couch with he loves to scratch ongrrrr.Ended up speaking with Amazon who gave me a partial refund so I could buy some screws hence the 4 stars. I wanted to decorate it so I put the chain that you get from a curtain blind around it (my cat had broken it and now he enjoys playing with the chain LOL) and hung a mouse filled with catnip around the top (please refer to the pics) to encourage him to scratch it and it worked like a charm! He really loves it and I love the fact that he has left my couch alone LMAO

I'm not sure why I didn't order this scratching post before! We have an 8 month old kitten who is RUINING our brand new couch. We seriously got this couch less than a month ago and he has ruined a corner of it already. I had bought so many carboard scratchers as that's what I have seen most people buying and recommending not to mention they're incredibly inexpensive. I have not once seen my kitten even go near any of these scratchers. Completely useless. Any other scratcher or trees are rather expensive and large. Something I can't get right now. (He's getting one for his 1st birthday :))I decided to get this post seeing as it had good reviews and a price point that I can easily afford. This post has been the best thing I have bought for my kitten. He actually scratches the post and my furnite is getting less and less damage. I al really happy with this product. It's also easy to assemble just attach the base to the post with the screw and tool provided. Literally took me 30 seconds. This post is also large enough for my kitten to climb a bit (he likes to use it as a step to his other endeavors lol) and he's a large kitten for his age (about 8-9lb and very long.

This scratching post is great! It comes delivered in two parts, the base and the post itself, and you get a big screw and a mini allen key. Its so easy to assemble, basically put the screw through the hole in the middle of the base (you may have to use scissors to poke through the fur), line up with the hole in the post and screw the parts together, using the allen key to make sure its tight enough. That done, just put it down and you're good to go! Its really sturdy and bigger than I thought which is good. I'm not sure about the whole placement thing (as mentioned in other reviews of this) but I put mine in the lounge and they took to it immediately. They loved the feel of the fur on the base and seemed to enjoy flexing their claws on it!I don't have to worry about it falling over at all. My male cat particularly likes the fact theres a small circle of fur topping the post and likes to stretch up to it, he half climbs to get at it too!I am overall VERY satisfied with this and I'm so glad I bought it. The price is fab too, considering its actually pretty big and robust. The cats love it!

My cat, who has spent the last 11 or so years roaming the neighborhood at my parent's house has recently relocated to my apartment, and as such, she has become an indoor only cat. Due to being an indoor-outdoor cat, she was used to being able to climb and scratch on the tree in the front yard, but here...she resorted to the furniture. I bought this in an effort to curb that, and while it took a while for her to actually start using it (nearly a month!) she has now ceased all destruction of my furniture. It definitely took some encouragement (and some discouragement when it came to my chairs), in the end what worked for me was tying a shoestring to the top to encourage her to sink her claws into it,along with randomly placing some small treats on the top so that she'd get a 'surprise' when she used it.I do like that it has a taller height, as my cat is no small kitty. It isn't quite tall enough for her to get a full stretch (she can easily claw into it and rest her head on the top of it) but it seems to be fairly sturdy and only wobbles slightly during the roughest of clawing sessions.

Great value for money.I ordered this for my cat who has been spotted trying to sharpen her claws on our leather sofa. Just before I bought this, I bought some concentrated catnip spray from my local pet shop, and when the post arrived, I sprayed some on it and she took to the post instantly. In terms of putting it together, it was so simple and took all of 30 seconds. The scratcher arrived in two parts, the carpetted base and the post itself. All that had to be done was screwing the two together. On top there is a carpetted disc that is removable, I attached a furry toy on a string. The cat took a vested interest in the scratching post right from the moment I set it up in the living room, but I was worried this might be short lived. It's been over 3 weeks now and I haven't seen her anywhere near the sofa, or the doormat that she used to use. She uses this all the time, except on the odd occasion when she'll use her old cardboard scratcher.Highly recommend this fantastic product. 5 stars from me, I would give it more if I could. It's saved me the cost of replacing our sofa!

I already have one of these that's a couple years old, but as I moved to a new house I needed a second to put on the second floor and hopefully protect the new sofas. My Loki loves these posts, he's used the original one every day, and when he saw the new one appear in the lounge he knew exactly what to do!They are a good size for him, and he is a large cat, as he likes to stretch his back at the same time. Honestly the original post is still in daily use even after 2-3 years, the sisel has broken in one place, he's a strong make cat and really pulls while stretching, but I'm sure a bit of glue will give it a few more years! The base is still perfect like new, Loki does like to scratch the base too.It became invaluable when moving house, as he's put so much of his scent into it (from scent glands in cats paws) that he immediately recognized it and acclimatised better to the new home.I'm really happy with my posts, and so is Loki. They are his furniture to rub, scratch and play as he wants, and he's more confident knowing his posts are there (he can be nervous and timid cat).

Recently got a cat and had to order a scratching post with urgency to save our couch, chairs and carpets. Looked through many on Amazon and decided on this one because it seemed a bit taller than most and generally had positive reviews.Very pleased with this purchase because, well, because the cat loves it. He took to it almost immediately (rewarded him with a cat treat to train him to use it) and most importantly, stopped scratching everything else.Have now had the post for two months. He still uses it daily and the HEIGHT of it is the key feature because he can get a good old full stretch in his back which scratching -- he really goes to town on this post! (He is a medium-sized cat.).Also good value-for-money.The reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because within the couple of weeks, the rope at the top of the post became compressed/pulled downwards, which has left a gap of cardboard tube showing at the top (SEE PHOTO). It seems this problem could be overcome in production by the manufacturer, but overall, it does not impact performance.

I like it, but really it doesn't matter to me. The cats are the ones who have to like it.This would get 5 star review but it didn't come with the bolt... I mean the crucial piece of hardware to make two parts one was missing. This is a serious bummer... Anyway, i had a left over bolt that came off my Mazda Miata (kitties love Mazda Miatas BTW(especially turbo ones)) that worked great. I'm guessing the thread pattern is metric since it's a metric car. This could be a serious inconvenience for the average buyer as they would have to bring a scratching post to the hardware store looking for a metric bolt. How embarrassing, and expensive. Now if i had to guess, this bolt i used was an m10x1.But i'm probably wrong.Either way, TRIXIE, check your packaging. Lets make sure the bolt is properly secured. Maybe it's Amazons fault. Maybe UPS. It doesn't matter, life is to short(even shorter for kitties) to point fingers at anyone. The product was WAYYY cheaper than the same thing you get in stores, so it more than makes up for it.
