I had the original Lumograph set and bought this Black set next. To be honest I was expecting it to be darker than the original, which it isn't. So initially I was disappointed. They look the same when looked from above. But when you move a bit, you realize that these don't shine against light as the originals do. The dark stays dark. You can see this in the second picture (same as the first, but from different angle).

These are superb quality. Steadtler Mars do make exceptional pencils. I have used them in many different applications over the years, technical drawing to sketching. I am a fan of the "blue" Lumograph and almost exclusivly use those. However, when I found these I couldnt wait to try them.....and I was not disapointed! These are a darker (its subtle though!) version and I will certainly be stocking up on more.

As the previous poster has indicated these are a very good pencil, the 2B and 4B are hard to put down at all. The 8B stands sharpening without the lead falling out - something I can't say about other brands' (Derwent). Even the tin feels of good quality. If I had to find one criticism I'd swap the HB for another 2B but that's just being picky to the point of pointlessness. I want some more :)

These pencils are fantastic! what I love most about them are how dark I can get my drawings! And there is very little shine in them as well.I've been using a different brand before and they broke all the time, these haven't broken once and I've already drawn three drawings with them. And I'm not so good at treating my pencils with care..I'll be buying more of these in the future!

Still the standard bearer for quality pencils. Been using this brand for 22 years and they just have it nailed when it comes to fine delicate shading. I am very intricate with shading and these pencils are up to the task and have never let me down. The other brands are OK but I will never change from Mars Lumograph as long as they keep producing the quality.

A great set of Steadler black pencils giving perfect tone and value without shine, for the drawings and sketches I love to do each day. Normal dark graphic pencils give of too much shine which spoils drawings. These Lumograph pencils give the perfect matt finish. My art tutor suggested I try these. You get six pencils per tin in 4 grades of intensity.

Just like another reviewer, Gibby, I thought purchasing these pencils would unleash the inner artist and creativity that had not been apparent with previous pencils. It didn't, however it is pleasure to attempt to draw with the pencils. If, however, you purchase them you'll only have yourself to blame for your pathetic sketches, and not your tools.

Nice metal tin.Grades are accurate.Some harder grades feel a tiny bit 'gritty'.When using the side of the lead if I lean the pencil very close to the paper there is an annoying tendency to leave blue marks from the outer blue paint on the pencil which doesn't happen with other brands I have.

Just gorgeous! Proper black without the graphite sheen! They are CARBON pencils - not graphite, so they will perform slightly differently - play with them! Let them guide you - you won't regert it! :) Lovely midnight black with not a bit of sheen to be seen - love them!

Excellent graded pencils, well centred leads to avoid breaks while sharpening, grade indicators stamped on all six sides of the pencil making it easy to see and select the grade you require. Smooth graphite lead, well mixed with binder to avoid grainy gritty spots.

Love these pencils. I was nervous to use them as thought they would be difficult to rub out and I draw with an eraser too. They worked brilliantly. Cant believe they are such good value for money. Looking forward to using for more projects

Some people really appreciate a good quality pencil even if they're not particularly artistic and this is a very reasonably priced tin of excellent drawing pencils that went down very well with the person I bought them for.

Purchased these for my son. He said they are good sketching pencils. And he sketches and draws a lot. You can see the quality as soon as you open the tin. I will now be purchasing some for myself. Excellent price too.

mars lumograph pencils are very good for drawing and sketching. they are very soft and work perfectly on 160 gsm paper and upper (220 or bristol board). the price is amazing and i would definitely recommend this

I've used the blue version for a long time but didn't like the softer grades as they felt waxy. These have a much nicer feel and better results on large dark areas. Less shine,deeper tone. Fully recommended!
