First of all THESE PENCILS ARE NOT TOYS - they are much too expensive too soft and WAY too black to be left in the hands of a child. I got the 8B because someone at my Life Drawing class showed me one. This soft pencil is wonderful to use - it is intensely black not grey like normal graphite. It is very tough, one can use a light touch or a really heavy push without breaking the point and the strip sharpens easily and takes a long time to wear down but being so thick it will shade full 5mm lines if held at a low angle. I have hated graphite pencil for drawing most of my life -ever since I saw sanguine crayon and silverpoint and brush drawings, but these Pencils, however they are made, are a joy to use. They are also very difficult to smudge, though the side of the hand tends to pick up some black it is not as much as a 6B graphite would give and washes off very easily. If the lines are light they can be rubbed out with a putty rubber but heavy lines leave a ghost on paper...They seem to be slightly soluble in water and White spirit but I have not experimented much with this. I would not use them with watercolour or colour pencil unless you want black lines around everything - I am told they are much used by animators and can see why they would be. I do not know why Amazon classes these pencils as toys, they are a perfect professional Tool.

Can't give a rating for sheerness, since I've no idea what it means. Softness is a silly category in this context. These pencils are graded F, which is somewhere between HB and H. As far as I know, there's no internationally agreed standard from one manufacturer to another on grading, so one HB pencil may be harder - or softer - than one made by another company.Anyhow, as far as these go, they are perfectly between the HB and H grades produced by Staedler. As usual, they are high quality pencils with a consistent lead, no unwanted grains or unexpected powdery sections; just the same from start to finish. They sharpen well and feel comfortable in use.As with their leadholders, Steadler's wooden pencils, are, in my opinion, the best you can get, and they are the only thing I'd consider for drawing.

I am a student of classical realist portraiture. I use these pencils for figure drawing and Bargue drawing. I get through two or three of these pencils each week. The pencils are of consistently high quality. The graphite is never lumpy, and can be sharpened to a 2-inch needle-fine point on a sanding pad, without breaking. It can produce very fine lines, though being 2B, the point does blunt quickly. The wood is generally easy to pare away with a scalpel, though sometimes the wood can be a bit tough, as if there is a knot in it.These are excellent pencils for sketching and detailed drawing. To get maximum use out of them, I would also invest in a

I was initially concerned that all the pencil leads would be broken as the packaging was insufficient. The first pencil I took out and sharpened kept breaking but I thought I would check all the others and they seem fine, fingers crossed. Love Staedler pencils. The only reason I gave the value for money a four is because one of the leads was obviously broken throughout.

I have used Mars Lumograph pencils extensively in the past so I am aware of their higher quality. They are more expensive than Staedtler Mars 'Tradition' pencils but much better especially when using softer grades of 4B to 9B. Not much more one can say about them except to wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone wanting to produce serious pencil drawings.

I got sick and tired of buying cheap pencils where the lead either came broken or broke on a cough. Pay a bit more, buy Staedtler Mars, drop with abandon! They sharpen well and write nice and clearly.

Being new to drawing I thought I would give these a try even though they are not the cheapest, but they are worth every penny. Will certainly be buying these in the future.

I have tried a lot of pencils and these are the King! Dark wen used for mark making, and it shades smoothly but best of all, even 2Bs stay strong and lead does not break.

Ordered these for my father in law, who is very picky about the pencils he uses. Very happy man since he was running out of writing impliments in the lockdown.

These pencils are a bit of a luxury, but they're so miuch nicer to use than cheaper ones, which can feel gritty on the page.

Only one pencil not a few as the picture would indicate May be a good pencil but at £1.50 it would need to be!
