I grew up with sonic games back during the 16-bit era of gaming and was very much a fan. I've eagerly awaited a new sonic game based on those originals and boy does this deliver. Not only in its graphics, but in its game play and music but amps everything up to 11.Made by the fans for the fans and does it show. The care put into bringing back sonic here is just joyful to see.For those not initiated this is a side scroller with momentum based mechanics. Its alot of fun building up speed and blasting through levels but for the curious their are multiple paths in levels and each one will reward you. Its a game I've sunk many hours into and I'm still finding things. The music here is exceptional.Re-worked classics as well as remixes just bring so much joy to the ears. The best soundtrack I feel in any game for a long time. The modes on offer here will keep you busy. Along with the standard mania mode the new one here is encore mode which has a few changes to the main game. Its still the same zones but each one has a pallet swap and a few weeks here and there so that veterans of this game are kept on their toes. I think its a little harder too, especially grabbing those chaos emeralds. All new UFOs to hunt and they are a pain to catch. Lives are different too as you gain all characters in tge game to play as and they are your lives. Lose all of them its game over. Theirs even new a new bonus level at tge beginning as well as a level to replace the blue spheres. Its a cool bonus to an already exceptional single player experience.Theirs also time trial mode to really test your speed and knowledge of a level.Their Is now 4 player multiplayer too which is a great time. Also we have the two returning characters who both add something new to the way you'll play this game. They are both fun to use and in Mighty's case abuse.Their is more to unlock but I shall not spoil that for you.The game comes with a wonderful mini art book and a reversible sleeve that has mega drive atheistic and even the back depiction of the game is in the vein of a 90's game. Very nostalgic.I can go on and on as I really do love this game. I think everyone can enjoy this. And if you already have sonic mania downloaded the game automatically updates on switch and all progress will be kept which is such a nice touch.I'd highly recommend this to all gamers who want a blast from the past. And I think this is essential for anyone who is a fan of the blue blur.Go go Sonic go

Sonic Mania caused massive buzz when originally announced and was a bold move by SEGA. There's no pretending that the Sonic series has had it's issues. Sonic Team occasionally hit on good ideas, but their own Sonic titles can be pretty hit-or-miss with audiences. A previous effort to go back to the series roots, Sonic 4 Episode I - had been marred with physics issues and "modern style" gameplay elements that made the game less enjoyable. There's always been an active fangame scene for the series, with lots of hacked versions of the classic games out there where people have designed new zones and even successfully introduced new mechanics. Most of the staff on Sonic Mania come from this fan community and are accomplished creatives and programmers. They are passionate about the series and this really shows in everything Mania has to offer, from loving recreations of classic Zones with slight twists (like the massive syringes that turn Chemical Plant Zone's Toxic Mega Mack into Mega Jell-O) to fun obscure references to the series past and Sega in general (which Studiopolis is packed to the gills with) .Visually it's a delight, with fresh new art for each location and overall improvements, the original core characters of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all have fresh new sprite sets with some lovely expressive animation (not that much of it is needed - it's mostly confined to cliff-edge wobbles and wait animations) along with the new Ray and Mighty from SegaSonic Arcade - an additional treat for long time fans. It not only plays well, but feels like a classic Sonic game too. Characters run at high speed and while gravity can act on these characters as they hit hills and slopes, it never feels like it completely kills the momentum of the gameplay. Pitfalls exist - but most of them are to prevent the player just "holding right" to finish the level or give them something to remember to avoid next playthrough - it rarely feels cheap or unfair. The Physical release is a massive treat, coming in a lovely foiled slipcover - an art book with lots of concept sketches and level design concepts, including concept art for the game's lovely animated opening. This also comes complete with the "Mania Plus" DLC that adds Encore Mode - a harder and adjusted playthrough of Mania that adds Mighty and Ray to the playable roster as well as an improved vs mode.

TLDR If you enjoy old school Sonic this is a no-brainer. It’s a faithful recreation of everything that made the originals iconic.I grew up with classic 16-bit Sonic on the Mega Drive. Sonic the Hedgehog is the first video game I have memories of and I still have the Sonic 3 cart with my original complete save file. To say it holds a special place in my heart would be an understatement.Though I enjoyed the likes of Sonic Adventure and other modern titles, they never really felt like the same games to me. Even Sonic Generations didn’t quite do it in its attempts to capitalise on nostalgia for the classics. I had accepted that “classic collections” or emulators would be the only way I’d be able to play those golden oldies going forward.I have them on more platforms than I’d care to admit......and then the mobile ports appeared. They were popular. The likes of Sonic CD were more accessible than ever before. Sonic 4 was released. The demand was there. People were interested. What about a brand new, standalone, 16-bit style game?Enter Sonic Mania. It plays like the classics. It FEELS like the classics. Hell, it even revisits the classics- literally! Half of the levels are set in classic zones with a modern rework. What small additions it makes don’t feel out of place or game breaking. The drop dash, for example, could be seen as comparable to adding the spin dash in Sonic 2. It adds a bit of utility without drastically shifting gameplay. If you enjoyed classic 16-bit Sonic I recommend this without hesitation. If you’re new to the series it’s harder for me to say as I’m biased. In this age of retro revival, though, it’s a perfect way to get that classic experience on a modern system.

Hands down the best game I've played this year.I was never into 2d sonic, I had a Dreamcast and played sonic adventure 1 and 2 literally every day and completed both games.I first played sonic mania at a friend's house and wasn't fully convinced, but upon seeing a physical release promising 4 player co-op - then they got my attention. If you don't know it yet, this game was created by sonic hackers who are sonic fans who were embraced by Sega! Besides coming with a little art booklet (the only game I own in the switch with one) the game is fantastic - and made even better by the low price! The music is good, the animations great, no bugs, the game saves your progress every time you finish act 2 and allows you to replay any level once you beat the final boss - to try to catch those emeralds. All characters can turn into super too!The two new characters are fantastic - I recommend playing with Mighty the Armadillo if it's your first time - as he usually avoids dying on spikes, as for Ray the Squirrel, left and right makes him fly (took me a while to figure that out)I've got over 50h so far and finished the game a good 6-7 times and I'm still itching for more. I have yet to finish encore mode - the special stages are HARD!If you like Sonic or if you want to tell the games industry we need more fan-lead games then - buy this game.I didn't have nostalgia for the blue blur but this game made me want to play the classics, I've installed the mobile games and an emulator to play 1, 2 and 3 and knuckles and I still can't get enough of it.

It's sonic and it's 2D. Any gamer of a certain age will know what they're getting here and it's like a breath of fresh air. Platforming at it's purest with none of the gimicks of the 3D games. Some new stages, some that are very familiar, all of it fantastic. This is one game that can appeal to the whole family. For the very young there's the cutesy characters but make no mistake - for the older children and adults this game is brutal with a capital B if you're wanting to unlock everything, hold onto your rings and going for the perfect run.My only very minor criticism is that my XBox One copy boasts XBox one-X Enhanced 4K loud and proud on the front cover. I have an X and, given that the whole presentation is purposefully retro and pixelated, I cannot see that it would look much different on standard HD consoles. If I could knock half a star off for what I feel is slightly disingenuous marketing I would, but since that's not possible and the rest of the package is so great I'm happy to round the score up to a full 5 stars. That said, I'm a bit peeved with Amazon, though I haven't reflected that in my scoring for the game. By pre-ordering I was forced to pay postage (there was no not even a tick-box for free delivery). I get that I'm not a member of Prime but given that I placed my order approximately 2 months ago and the parcel was despatched to Royal Mail 3 days prior to delivery, this was not technically next day delivery. I'm certain that Amazon never used to charge for postage on pre-orders so what's changed?

1. It’s great that we’ve got a new 2D platform Sonic the Hedgehog game to play and I hope to see more.2. I was somewhat disappointed with certain aspects of the level choices, particularly the emerald special stages, as the format of them was not to my taste in the original game; there were some cracking levels that could have been used from the original games that would have been better; but it’s good and full of fun surprises.3. The game is inventive with the past and the controls are beautifully smooth.4. For a big sonic gamer I found it easy to get into the swing of things.5. As well as the main game there are a tonne of extras that you earn to alter the gameplay of the main game as well as the delightfully enjoyable Encore mode and bonus games.6.Artwork and music stunning.I enjoyed it very much. In the future if I decide on a Sonic marathon, the order will be Sonic 1&2, Sonic Mania, Sonic 3 & S&K, Sonic CD and Sonic 3D.

...I couldn't be happier.Since 1999 Sonic games have been an absolute car crash, more ridiculous characters, terrible plot lines, awful gameplay (there are a few exceptions).Sonic Mania is a return to form and I really do hope we see more like this in the future (the modern stuff can continue if need be, just as a separate offshoot I guess, but good luck to them, have you played Forces...j*s*s chr*st what a pile of sh*t).Anyway as for the Plus version. I bought a physical copy despite owning the original just to show my support, the flippable cover is nice touch and the booklet whilst small is a welcome bonus. As for the game itself, there isn't as much new as I'd hoped,Ray and Mighty are cool to see after soooo many years absent but I'm not driven to really play it as much as I used to because a pallette change on the levels isn't that much of an incentive.Overall though, a solid package and well worth a purchase.

We asked, and SEGA delivered. (Albeit after a fair few years and some god awful games)Only got this yesterday but really having fun so far, really is a blast to the past with all the elements that made the old games so good and loads of new things that don't feel out of place at all, genuinely feels like it could have been a part of the sega megadrive collection. The chaos emerald minigame is pretty difficult, stuck on the third emerald at the moment but games need to be challenging. Boy do I know the importance of a challenge after my recent purchase of KH3.... let's not get into that. Anyway, will make it all the more rewarding when I get all the emeralds! Very interested to see if you can go super with all the characters...not going to ruin it by looking on YT!Oh also, the music is fantastic, got some of the old songs for nostalgia and then lot's of new songs too, just praying they bring out a sequel!!!

I absolutely love this game... Apart from one downfall, the train wreck of minigames for chaos emeralds! The level design is the best of the series and the music for a much needed upgrade without destroying the classics. The bosses are what you expect from a sonic game, rather difficult until you've learnt the patterns then they are easy enough. The fact that you can choose all characters and have a multiple save files (so one for each character and more besides). Only downside is if you have to stop in act 2 you return to act 1 on the save but that's a minor problem. I even love the return of the "old" sphere minigames for medals... Definitely an improvement on the pointless checkpoint games as it can unlock extras. The extras in the plus version make this the must buy version and the game never lets up no matter which character you choose.

A throwback to the 90s, this is a fun blast from the past. It is essentially a sequal to the original Sonic Quadrilogy on the Sega Megadrive. The 2D platforming gameplay is smooth, the bright colours and backgrounds are beautiful and the soundtrack is stunning. As for the presentation you get a gorgeous shiny slipcover and a nice little booklet as well as the usual PS4 case inside. It is probably the best £25 I have ever spent. If you grew up playing 2D platformers in the 80s and early to mid 90s, just buy it! Even if you didn't and you are a modern gamer you should still buy it, it would be a great welcoming package to 2D platformers.

I remember the original Sonic games, sonic 3 on megadrive being the top. This comes very close to that.Gone are the RPG elements, battle engines, dungeon crawler elements of the horrendous sonic games of recent memory turning a once beloved hedgehog into something it's not. Thank goodness for this game which is simple, elegant and amazingly playable the second it's been pushed into the Switch.I hope all future Sonic games are like this. Developers please note, turning Sonic into a knight, wizard, adventurer or kart racer is not a good use of your time. Leave him where he's best, a side scrolling blur of speed and excitement.

Absolutely superb, it's as the games were on the Megadrive / Genesis - still nice and "pixely" but looks great on a big TV. Not so sure today's kids will like this (in the age of Skyrim, Call of Dury, Fortnite etc), but great for nostalgia if you played Sonic as a youngster. Plenty of old levels, but reworked and tweaked, new music and characters etc. So much better than Sonic Forces, which was dreadful. Brought back memories of playing this as a kid in the early 90's. Outer box looks great - gold holographic. Comes with an art book, and the box inside is reversible, so you can make it look like the old Megadrive box. Awesome.

WELCOME BACK SONIC!!As a 44 year old who basically refuses to buy digital content as i want to feel it! I have been waiting for this for a while. I am not disappointed! Sonic lost its way a long time ago but is back where he belongs (and i don't mean on a megadrive!). Playing this takes me back to being a teenager playing on a 14 inch tv I can see me spending may hours on this and the blend between new and old zones is seamless. Now i can play in HD on 50" tv but will still throw a controller or two!

11.8.2020

This is a fantastic game which tries and succeeds to emulate all that was great about the early Mega Drive Sonic games, and ultimately becomes arguably the best game in the series since. I would highly recommend it to everyone who is a fan of Sonic and even those who have never touched a Sonic game or maybe even disliked other Sonic games in the past (incl. those who only played the 3D sonic games), if this game doesn’t convince you that the series is capable of greatness I don’t know what will.

1.8.2018

Being a massive Sonic fan from back on the Mega Drive and Master System I was thrilled with Sonic Mania. The new update adds two lesser known characters: Mughty the Armadillo and Ray the flying squirrel, for a total of 5 playable characters, and a new Encore mode will test even the most avid Sonic fan’s skills to the limit. Would I recommend this to those who already own Sonic Mania? Perhaps not, although anyone else who enjoys classic 2D platformers this should be a must have!
