Shenmue 1 is still to this day one of my all time favourite games, depending on my mood I'll pick this or Final fantasy 7.Those that have played it won't need any review, they either fell in love with it or hated it, it had that marmite effect. For those that haven't played it, you simply must - as if you're one of the ones that might like it, it may become one of the best games you've ever played. Anyone that likes Segas Yakuza games, you've got to get this - it's the spiritual prequel and many of Yakuzas features are here, the shops, vending machines, playable games, combat, epic story etc etc.I've played Shenmue 1 to death, and mainly bought it to replay Shenmue 2,I didn't like it when it was released on the Dreamcast. I was too young and impatient to put up with subtitles, and I felt it dragged on faaaar too long as well as having way too many QTEs. I'm hoping that now I'm almost 20 years older I'll be able to enjoy it as intended. Even if I still don't like it, £30 to play Shenmue 1 again, but now with anywhere saving is a price I'm willing to pay.Spyro next month, and Resi 2 in January too, this is a great period in gaming for me personally being as my all time top 5 games areShenmue 1Final fantasy 7Dark soulsSpyro 3Resident evil 2.The gamers amongst you will notice all 5 have either been remastered recently, or having remasters/reboots coming very soon.Delving into my top 10, Medievil is coming soon too, that only leaves Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, Jet set radio and Parasite eve left to re-release in some form and I'll have my ten favourite games, in next gen form. I don't care for the newer titles that are easily forgotten, keep feeding me classics from a time where substance beat style and I'll be a happy gamer.Five stars all day long - this will tide me over nicely til Yu Suzuki FINALLY releases Shenmue 3. A game I've been waiting most of my adult life for and never thought would see the light of day. Thank you to all fellow backers that made it a reality cos my £100 wasn't enough sadly. Also - shame on the person that gave this 1 star for being a lazy port, it's hugely improved graphically and from a QOL aspect, the sound wasn't able to be improved as they had to run with the 20 year old compressed data they were left with, unless they were expected to completely redo ALL the voices in the game which would have been impossible. Not sure what this person was expecting, it looks far better, the controls are more fluid, no shimmering, nicer shadowing, save anywhere functions, choice of language both in voice and subtitles, almost zero loading times compared to the originals etc etc, they won't be missed going back to the more bubblegum copycat Yakuza games, clearly a person with bad taste and blinded by full on expensive remasters of much newer and smaller titles. As for cash grab, it's £30 for 2 games that can easily take 100 hours of gameplay to finish, if you want a cashgrab - Goosebumps the game (over in 3hrs, absolute dirge of a point and click title that's often on sale on PS4 for £1.99) is coming out on the Switch shortly... For £30.That's a cash grab. Shenmue fans have been asking for this title to be re-released for nearly two decades, Sega could have cash grabbed much sooner if that were the case. Clearly can't be a Shenmue fan at all to rate them 1*, and if not a fan then why on earth buy the games at launch? Seems like pure trolling to me. Always one person that has to lower a rating, the Jim Sterling of Amazon.

The world shenmue creates is one I got lost in back in christmas 2000 I received it with 5 other games and a dreamcast (I know i was a lucky child also an only child :P) . I picked up the games infront of me and i'll be honest the shenmue front cover looked like a drama or soap opera and it didn't grab me. After playing resident evil : code veronica and virtua tennis and other games Shenmue was the last, little did I know i saved the best for last. I read the back of the game sleeve and immediately it peaked my interest. A tale of revenge , exploration and fighting you say i better see what this game is all about. I started playing just before midnight christmas day and stopped boxing day 5am.This game gripped me I can't explain it. So much so I barely touched the other games until well into the new year . It was my first real experience of east asian culture aswell ,which i still love to this day . I was a martial artist , a detective , an explorer , a sailor finder and socially awkward. I WAS RYO HAZUKI. In real life i was just socially awkward :O .The graphics still hold up to this day infact this re-release will surprise people who have never heard of shenmue that it first came out 1999/2000. The gameplay introduced quick time events and done it in a very balanced way.I know QTEs are now more of a curse than a blessing but it seems no game since as got the balance of QTEs right like shenmue did. They just fit in perfectly with shenmue, maybe because they were made purposely for shenmue while the other games tend to shoehorn them in. The dialogue and voice acting wasn't the best but Corey Marshall's voice has become synonymous with Ryo and I thought he done a great job. Many memorable moments and unintentional humour give shenmue a charm that can't be replicated . Shenmue is for sure not formulaic and it's one of the most unique games I've ever experienced .The story draws you in I won't say too much about it but its a tale of revenege that takes you to different settings in japan and china with characters you'd expect to find if you travelled yourself around japan and china. Even minor characters you might meet for say 5 minutes in total throughout the game stick with you.£29.99 is a bargain for fans of shenmue and those new to the series .More accessible to all! A chance to find the world of shenmue and enjoy it, like I did in 2000 and will again in 2018.

I bought a Dreamcast based on this game. It was 2001 and I was 15, and for weeks and weeks I immersed myself in these games. I explored everything, talked to everyone and lived "Shenmue".Fast forward and, although I continue to love these games for the nostalgia, I can't recommend if you didn't play them first time around. The game is beautiful but does not hold your hand like modern RPGs - sometimes you have to wait a day with no fun other than what you make for yourself. The dialogue can be repetitive and the English voice actors are devoid of any kind of emotion. Modern RPGs will give you an arrow on a map to follow - not Shenmue; you either hunt for whatever it is yourself or risk asking one of the many NPCs who are no help whatsoever. The plot is also somewhat disjointed makes you wonder why the police don't fully investigate a murder which had a number of key witnesses. Now for the positives. The detail is immense. The soundtrack is gorgeous. The QTE scenes (hit one button a take guys down with the minimum of fuss) are awesome, except where you're balance on planks - then they're just weird. The fight scenes are great fun. The cut scenes are beautifully crafted detailed filled cinematic masterpieces and are worth watching. The arcade games are brilliant.Shenmue can still punch in an era of heavyweight RPGs. It is not fully open world (there are places you can't go and things you can't interact with) but it is as near as is needed. You will enjoy this game even if you never played it before; but as a new gamer, it may just be too unforgiving for you to fully appreciate it.

This is the game that set many standards in the video game industry, QTE's, passion and care on npc's so that the world is deep and 3 dimensional, a step towards a free-flowing multi-person battle system, this game has it all in its raw and un-refined form. The game has class, style, huge attention to detail and rewards you for role playing (by immersing yourself as Ryo you will get cut scenes that 'speed gamers' will miss)What has improved: The quality of the image is sharper, there is less rough edges and the lighting and colours have been fine tuned. You can play the game in wide screen but cut scenes are in 4:3 resolution (although the quality has still been imrpoved)Loading is almost non existant, this is the big pro. For the dreamcast version you may have had to sit at an area transition loading screen for as much as 30 seconds, now you'll be looking at closer to 2 seconds. What has gotten worse: Nothing, I have heard reports that other people have had some technical issues but I have suffered 0 so far. What has stayed the same: Almost everything else that has not been mentioned, including the really painful audio quality. I love this game, chances are you will too, but if you don't find the audio quality poor, constantly peaking, too bassy and way too loud compared to the other sounds then I recommend going to the doctors to check on your ears.9.5/10 - recommend players play this game with voice turned down to 40%

Shenmue was a game I obsessed over as a teen the second I heard about it from a friend - eventually forking out the money for a dreamcast initially just to play it - and quickly became my favourite game of all-time.You could do what you wanted - an open-world experience where you can play arcade games, darts, lottery, get a job, collect toy capsules and fight off hordes of goons and sailors, all topped with a gripping story from start to finish, features absent from anything else on the market at that time and some of the best music you'll hear in a game to this day.One of my favourite things to do was simply just talking to anyone you can - some of the dialogue is hilarious and not to be missed. So revisiting this collection yesterday filled me with excitement, and again really didn't dissapoint - the games (granted ive only played Shenmue 1 on this disc) look fantastic, the new menus and small tweaks are a welcome addition, as is the option to switch from English to Japanese audio at any time via the menu. The games are perfect enough as is, cannot recommend this package highly enough, and at price it is, will keep you busy for months if you're new to the series. The game also ships with a poster inside the box which was neat.Shenmue IIi has been in development for a couple of years now and is coming sometime in the near future, so pick this up and get looking for that black car!

Two of the best games ever made re-released for newer consoles, if you never played before buy it. It's made even better with the updated UI which makes item choosing a lot easier and puts them in separate categories. The graphics ARE actually better, if you turn the HD option on in the options menu it makes them more polished than the dreamcast version, you can read details on items more clearer for one. You can also select original graphics if you want it to look identical to the dreamcast version. You can also choose between Japanese language or English and are not just stuck with one. if your planning on buying Shenmue 3 buy this first, then you will know the characters and story well and all your items that you buy or earn carries over to the second game, then carried to the 3rd game also when its released. There is slight bugs with the video during 'some' cut-scenes which just messes up the camera angles but it doesn't freeze the game. Hopefully anther patch will fix this though

I was a huge fan of the original versions on the Dreamcast, so I was hopeful that they would be as good as I remembered almost 20 years on. The great news is that they are! Graphics still look good considering the age, controls are fine, gameplay is exactly as I remember! Voice acting is, interesting at some points, but things have come a long way in 20 years, so I’ll forgive that, just makes me laugh at some of the lines! The fact that almost all of the other characters are unique, and not just clones says a lot about what they managed to make at that time! It’s an excellent story, and whilst I obviously knew the key parts, there were little bits I’d forgotten that add so much to the overall narrative.Fans of the original will not be left disappointed, and it was a great story refresher for going into Shenmue 3, as I’d forgotten a lot of the ending of Shenmue 2.

I originally acquired these games by buying a Dreamcast with a huge bundle of games and peripherals from a cash strapped friend back in 2002, when I finally got around to playing these strange looking games I was completely blown away and immersed for a couple of weeks. So on hearing I was going to get the chance to revisit the magical locations featured in the two games along with trophy support on the ps4 I put my pre order in straight away.I put around four hours in last night, Initially I found the control system quite clumsy compared to modern games but have now got used to it.The visuals have held up well whilst the sound quality is not great it does its job.Overall I would score this re release 8/10I cannot wait to get home later and find some sailors in Dobuita shopping street...Maybe I should get another.

A masterpiece of its time, and still holds up pretty well!(SPOILER FREE FOR NEW PLAYERS)This game set the path for many features now commonplace within video games, there's a LOT of depth and things to do; minigames, sidequests etc. Also, a pretty cool forklift simulator.I've played non-stop since receiving yesterday, and loving the nostalgia. There's a few graphical/ musical bugs that weren't present in the originals but I've not encountered anything game-breaking as of yet.Graphically, the game holds up pretty well even if the 'remastering' is limited (most likely due to budget). With Shenmue 3 having just been announced for August 2019, I highly recommend getting this collection, regardless of whether you've already played it or not. If you've got the patience, there's something in this set for everybody.

This is part of my childhood. So many memories with my beloved Dreamcast, this brings the nostalgia to the maximum. Storyline, music, characters, atmosphere... all still there except from the now horrendous controls and awful sound and voice acting. Graphics aged too but pretty tolerable. There are some glitches too every now and then. It aged bad, unfortunately, and even the fans of these games will find it a bit "tricky" to play them... let alone people playing these masterpieces for the first time. You can absolutely not give these games less than 5 stars though. Before giving them a chance, remember that these games are almost 20 years old and have the mindset to experience them as theymeant to be experienced before immersing yourself in this amazing adventure.

I never had a Dreamcast back in the day so I knew very little about Shenmue. I picked it up in a high Street store about a year ago, brand new for a tenner. What can I say? It's mind-blowing how good Shenmue 1 is (I haven't played 2 yet). Such a unique experience. You are transformed to a virtua world set in 1986 Japan and it's pure magic, everything is done beautifully. It's a bit like a Japanese Kung Fu revenge movie that is full of charm and humour. The game moves along at a very relaxing pace.I'm playing this couple of weeks now. I'm only after finding the mirror in the basement. That's where I am in the game. At the moment I would class Shenmue 1 as one of the greatest games I've ever played ever.It is really good. It's like finding an absolute diamond.

I originally played Shenmue 1 and 2 on the SEGA dreamcast around 18 years ago and that was a hell of a ride. I'm really glad SEGA bought back the originals and there is so much I had forgotten about the legendary games. I am one of the few kick-starter supporters of Shenmue 3 (which was launched back in June 2015 at the E3 expo) and don;t regret for a second how much I donated to the project to get the series complete. The fact that you get 2 games on a single disc and you can play them on the new gen consoles is a real delight! A must buy for fans of SEGA and Japanese Cultural Games!!

I didn't have a Dreamcast so I missed out on this game. With the third installment coming out, I decided to purchase Shenmue 1 and 2 in order to make sure I was ready for its sequel. I have to say, this game did not disappointment. A truly enthralling story with engaging characters. Action packed with many philosophies to learn from.I'm glad I played it recently and not back in 1999 and 2001 respectively because I couldn't imagine the agonising wait the Dreamcast fans had to endure. I can't wait for the sequel.Lan Di, we coming for that ass!

Tired of the modern rpg games, with their fetch and carry quests, cliched storylines and predictable levelling systems? Fancy a game where you feed a kitten back to health, beat up 70 bad guys one after the other, race a fork-lift truck and spend all your money on classic SEGA games down the local arcade? Then you are in luck, my friend, as you longer have to buy a dodgy dreamcast off ebay to experience the masterpiece that is Shenmue. Look beyond the dated graphics and immerse yourself in the definitive cult videogame of the early noughties.

25.6.2019

Shenmue 1 and 2 are classics from the dreamcast era brought back to life after years of fans campaigning for a 3rd in the series sega and d3t rereleased these classics on modern platforms for an all new audience to fall in love with if you buy these games go into them with an open mind set and don't judge them on modern standards remember these games are from 99 and 2000 for there time they was the most expensive projects and looked amazing great strory great gameplay plus lots of npc and items to interact with.
