As a fan of the Saw series of films thus far, I was excited with a dab of apprehension when I heard that they were making a game based on the franchise. The apprehension came in because I really couldn't see how they could make a decent game based on the films and I expected it to be complete tosh. Thankfully I was wrong! The game is by no means perfect but it is a good a movie-tie-in as I have played.First of all, the cons:1. The graphics aren't great but they are good enough. I've read the absolute slatings some reviewers have given the graphics and they really aren't that bad!2. The combat system is very underdeveloped. As has already been said, it is usually a case of who gets the first blow in.I have found a way around this though: it all comes down to what weapon you are holding. If you come up against someone with a huge hammer or something, you need something quicker or he will beat you to the punch every time. If your opponent has no weapon, drop yours and use bare fists or you'll have no chance.3. The voice acting is not done by the same actors as the films for recognisable characters, so much so that when Amanda appeared, I didn't even realise it was meant to be her at first! That being said, the quality of the voice acting done by the new actors is decent enough.4. Some of the traps are a bit too confusing at first. There is one in particular where you have to try and identify a code from numbers written all over a room before you are electrocuted. This means standing at every conceivable angle to try and see the numbers and then there is no clue as to what order the numbers should be in. This would normally be fine but you are only given something like 2 minutes to do this and I ended up dying over and over again until I got lucky and guessed the right combination! Very frustrating! The "finding a key in a toilet full of needles" traps are also a bit overused. Now on to the pros:1. The atmosphere is genuinely spooky, you will find yourself walking very slowly indeed so as to be able to hear bad guys before you see them and you will constantly be turning round to check that there is noone about to bonk you on the head with a pipe from behind.2. The ability to set up/reactivate traps is very fun indeed, there is nothing more satifying than setting up a trip-wired shotgun, luring a bad guy to chase you then watching his head being blown off! Hah, take that nutcase!3. The "end of level" traps that you need to save various characters from are very nicely designed, I especially liked the injection chair. There is a genuine sense of urgency although the first time round it is very tempting to just let the character die to see the gruesome animations, you always get another chance to save them! The puzzles you need to solve in these sections are just difficult enough to give you a sense of achievement but not hard enough to be frustrating.4. The addition of the shotgun collar which is slapped on you fairly early on is a nice touch. This collar will go off if you get close enough to another character with a similar collar. This means that you need to be very tactical in how you deal with said enemies, thinking of ways to take them out using the environment without getting too close. It also removes the repetition of beating up the standard enemies with blunt objects.5. The game is full of nice little touches, for example, using a lighter or a camera flash as a source of light really adds to the atmosphere and for those who have seen the films, is a nice link in. Also, the fact that Tapp is barefoot means that you need to be aware of the surroundings as you can decrease your health by walking on broken glass. One particularly nice touch is a section where you need to turn off the lights in order to see a fluorescent trail which will lead you to a particular cabinet. If you don't do this, you will choose the wrong one and set off a room full of dynamite! The game is full of moments like this, sections that actually require a bit of brain power. So, overall, there are some bad points to this game but in my humble opinion the good ones outweigh the bad ones. If you are a fan of the films, give this game a try and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Saw: The Videogame stars David Tapp, played by Danny Glover in the original film. The detective's obsession with catching Jigsaw has torn lives apart, leaving a trail of destruction in the search for justice. Consequently, Tapp becomes the latest pawn on the board. Waking in an asylum, he's given a chance at redemption, and the opportunity to catch Jigsaw. But first he must run a gauntlet of personal demons. To make matters worse, another game is running. Other people have been incarcerated in the asylum, and whilst unconscious, a key was sewn into Tapp's body. This is the only means of escape, so everyone is hunting the detective.Saw's greatest achievement is capturing the feel of the movies. From the title music to the environments, it's an authentic experience. Subtle touches are everywhere; the fact Tapp is barefoot throughout, forced to walk over broken glass, is reminiscent of the films. Televisions switch on automatically when nearby, displaying that horrendous clown. As a source of illumination, Tapp can use a camera flash. The effect it creates is disorientating, and at times panic-inducing. It's lifted directly from the series, and proves an effective gameplay mechanic. There's also an element of fan service, as many popular traps feature. The bear trap is included, in addition to the Pendulum and Rack. There are some new ones, including an injection chair. Each stage requires the rescue of a different victim. Moral decisions are rarely used in survival horror titles, but it's a welcome addition.Brain teasers are frequent, sometimes accompanied by a cryptic riddle. They include a lock picking minigame, a shape recognition game involving cogs, and getting electrical current to pass through a circuit board. More graphic puzzles involve searching for a key in a toliet of hypodermic syringes, or dipping a hand into a vat of acid. They are suitably nasty, but ultimately let down by repetition. The shock value is lost after the first encounter, and they do become repetitive. However, combat sections are the most disappointing. The whole system is scrappy, with jerky animation and poor collision detection. Fights are usually won by whoever lands the first blow, which can be frustrating. A shotgun collar does force alternate tactics, and traps can be set to avoid direct confrontation. It's just a shame the actual fighting is so underdeveloped. It's refreshing to see a movie licence make such good use of the source material. The experience isn't consistent enough to attract casual players, but for Saw fanatics, it doesen't get much better.

My first impression when seeing that a Saw game had been made was that we don't need any more movie games, but after reading a few reviews i was intrigued.I must say, that I do really like the first film, but am not a fan of the franchise, so I enjoyed the game not only for the film references and traps, but also as a horror title. I love a good scary or creepy game, such as the first couple of Silent Hill titles, and the Resident evil series, but have lately been struggling to find anything new.I'll start with the graphics; not brilliant, but I've seen a lot worse, in general it looks good, detailed, atmospheric, just not mind blowing. I would say it looks like an improved ps2 game. The plot is set in between the first and second films, but includes traps from the rest. You play detective Tapp, who wakes up to find himself the subject of Jigsaws horrific tasks, you have to work your way around an old asylum, solving puzzles, avoiding traps and other 'inmates', whilst finding clues that lead you to a test. The tests are people, often characters from the films, that you have to save. The puzzles are often fairly simple, but when you start to encounter the gas traps it starts to provide more of a challenge. The controls are nice and simple with a few siaxis moments thrown in, slightly annoying on a few of the puzzles but in general not a flaw of the game.I would say it is quite a creepy game, 'pigface man' (whatever he's called) pops up every now and then, which at times made my heart race, there are some very good sound effects that leave you wondering if someone is about to jump on you, and there are televisions placed around the building just so jigsaw can poke at you when he feels like it.A lot of people have said that it isn't really replayable, but I think that it is one of those games that when left on my shelf for a year will start to call to me again. I am not sure if that's just me, or if people are saying they don't want to replay in an immediate sense. It does have an alternate ending, but you only have to replay about 2 minutes of the game from the last save point to choose the other ending, and it has two difficulties, so if you like a challenge you could give it a whirl on 'insane' mode.Overall, i would recommend giving this game a go, perhaps don't spend more then £25 or £30 on it, but from what I've seen in the shops its already available a bit cheaper.

When converting a series of gruesome fantasies which, when correlated, seem to be a series of effed' up ways to kill someone - you can't help but wonder how they can make a game based on this idea. Most games now'days have contextual violence, some gruesome, some tame - but the Saw franchise has focused it's core on violence. Interestingly, we've done a 180 spin and in actuality the Saw game has put story and substance into something that is otherwise gore for the sake of gore.Basically, the best way to summarize Saw (or the game-play that is Saw)would be the following:The tone, mood and drab colours and lighting are the same as the movie. The cinematography, flash back system and gloom are all apparent, abundant in fact.As with the latter movies, the game is singularly based on one character (thus far).We have a series of empathetic rhetoric mixed with pseudo-logical tests and puzzles (think.. Cube meets Sherlock Holmes)There is story, there is mood, there is style and there is a graphical engine that surpasses my expectations. The visuals are gorgeous, and although nothing to write home about, I'm sure we can all admit we've seen some pretty horrific lighting attempts in the next gen scene. It does feel like a recycled Silent Hill 5 system, but completely overhauled where Silent Hill 5 disappointed. Textures are believable - and a keen eye has been used when emulating the gritty feel of the movies we hate to enjoy.I suppose, although lame, what we're asking is 'is Saw just a way to make a quick buck on behalf of the gore hype surrounding this pop-culture fad'. The answer: No. Saw, the game, offers much more of an experience than the movies. It genuine empathy where otherwise we feel disconnected. Although an emulation of reality, being plugged into the morality of the character does give you that closeness to actually question the twisted philosophies presented to us through this pop-philosophical thriller. So, to summarize, although the tests and games are somewhat easier than you'd expect, they -are- creative, and you're left feeling a sense of rush when you've completed something that would otherwise pull your chin over your face and back down to your ankles.

The game starts in surroundings that will be familiar to anyone who has seen a Saw film.A victim wakes up in a dingy, dimly-lit room. They are bound to a chair and there is a mechanical contraption strapped to their face. A television set on the opposite side of the room flickers to life and its screen fills with the face of a creepy, grinning puppet. "Hello, Detective Tapp", in a voice that sounds like hot tar being poured from a cement mixer, "I wanna play a game."The game wont live up to any of the films, but then what game has? The traps are original (for the end of chapter scenes) and yet very repetitvie (hands in the toilet bowl to get a key, for example). Its got to get 4*'s though for originality and general feel.Best played with the lights off and volume up!

Saw is a really good puzzle game. Its now £15 and its a must, if you dont enjoy the game for that price you cant go wrong. I really enjoyed the game because i play for trophys aswell as the game and liked the trophys this game had. If you like saw the film, youll like this with some hard puzzles to complete.

31.8.2010

I was very surprised as to how good this game is. As the ps3 lacks in survival horror games, this is an original and fun 'escape the madhouse' kinda game. Good graphics, sound and controls, not much I didn't like here. Deffo one for the collection, even if you're not a Saw film fan (like me).

Bought this for my partner, who is a fan of the Saw films. He also loves puzzles in games and some of these really tested him. He finished it in a couple of days and says it is best game he has completed.

18.12.2009

I got it as a present for a mate and he is well happy. The game actually scares him once in a while and he needs to take a break. It arrived within a couple of days of ordering it too, so all is good =]

29.7.2019

Nothing related to the order itself, the game is hard due to its controls. Was aware of that. Regardless - it’s worth playing if you like Saw and all the intricate traps!

28.10.2012

Saw the video game, is different from most games. Saw the game, is mainly about solving puzzles which are not easy and the challenges get harder going along.

24.7.2019

Bloody brilliant. Very intellectual, using walkthroughs or YouTube aren't gonna help as the puzzles are not always the same each time. Great game. Do it.

11.4.2010

Do not play on your own. Very scary. Certainly not suitable for children! Good game with lots of puzzles to complete. Will take ages to complete.
