Puzzles & Dragons (P&D) started life as a fantastically lucrative Free-to-Play game which became the world's top-grossing app in 2013. Now the 3DS plays host not to one but two P&D games on the same cart, and as far as I can see (from 13 hours in) there are no in-game purchases at all. You buy the game and you're set (which will be refreshing to anyone irritated by Pokemon Shuffle and its constant prompts to pay to win). Given how much gameplay here, that means that it's already a considerable bargain, but - more's to the point - the game itself is superb. Both games on the cart are gem-matching RPGs. Most players will head straight for the Super Mario Bros. edition which, just as you would hope,is a loving makeover in Mushroom Kingdom livery with all the expected enemies and, importantly, sound effects. The underlying engine is the same as that for P&DZ, but typical Nintendo magic has been added to turn it into a charming, pick-up-&-play pleasure. The difficulty curve seems to be better on this version as well (P&DZ goes from trivially easy to quite tricky in the blink of an eye) and this is the more polished of the two games.P&DZ, by contrast, came as a surprise to me. It's a bland Japanese RPG along the Pokemon line where a teenager goes around defeating enemies and collecting, evolving and levelling a collection of monsters. It's the same core game from a different angle, very nicely put together and featuring some great music (along Final Fantasy lines) and inventive enemy character models. Although I love the Mario version I think that it will be here that I spend more of my time. The gem-matching mechanic, by the way, is difficult to describe but is certainly more satisfying than is seen in many games of this sort. There's no time limit (except in the Score Attack mode) and you plan how you will move one gem around the field of play, displacing other gems as you go. Then - once you touch a gem and start moving it - a fast countdown timer starts, meaning that speed & dexterity form an important part of the game. Crucially, this is not a game where you get two lines and then depend on luck where the lines shake out: there's more skill to it than that.As a package, this is fantastically complete and - just as long as you don't mind grinding to level the monsters that you collect - it will soak up as much of your time as you can spare for it. This is the perfect mobile game for 3DS (nice 3D visuals as well) and is a strong candidate for the ten best games on the system.

Puzzle and Dragons first came out as a mobile game (sadly never officially released in Europe) which relied heavily on microtransactions, but now it was released as a stand-alone game for 3DS (or two games in fact). Both games have got similar gameplay where you have to match at least 3 orbs of the same colour to make an attack against the enemy. The game is basically a mixture between Puzzle Quest and Pokemons, and it is as addictive as its predecessors. The story in both is pretty standard (in the PaDZ you save the world, in the Mario edition you save the princess) and serves only as a glue between different dungeons, but the meat of the game is the combat and collecting monsters to level up and use in battle. The number of available monsters to catch is pretty impressive and it will keep anyone who loves getting everything in game playing it for hours. It may be a bit easy at the beginning but the difficulty level spikes as you progress through the game.If you love Puzzle Quest, Pokemons or even enjoy Candy Crash Saga, this game will not disappoint you.

I don't write game reviews on the whole, I leave that up to my son, but this game is just brilliant and so absorbing. I love match 3 games and am also a fan of RPG. Well I was so surprised when I started Puzzle and Dragons Z, it is like Pokemon, Pokemon Ranger, Spectrobes and Digimon all rolled in together. You have to save the world, evolve eggs into dragons, then evolve them further with chips and there are quests thrown in along the way. I haven't gotten around to really playing the Mario side of the game, but that is an added bonus two games in one. If my son wasn't still obsessed with Monster Hunter , then I know he would love this game as well.I am so pleased that I downloaded the demo off Nintendo otherwise I would not have discovered this brilliant game. Highly recommend!

I brought this expecting a nice little pick up and play mobile style puzzle game I could play on my daily commute without too much thought.I quickly found out it's not that at all in-fact for a puzzler it's actually got a lot of depth which at first knocked me and put me of playing it.Now I've gone back and properly invested some time into it, I've found this is a rich detailed very rewarding puzzler.I must add I've not actually played the Puzzle & Dragons game, this is based solely on the Mario Bros edition, which in my opinion once you get into it, is worth the entrance fee alone.

In alI honesty, I was not expecting this game to be anywhere near as brilliant as it is! It's basically all the things you love about Mario and all the things you love about tetris all rolled onto one, with a few surprises added in there too! (You won't be alone if the description does not sound that amazing, it even made me think that this game would probably be kinda cheesy, but wait til you play it and you'll see different!) It is \very hard to put this game down!

Came today but I havent had a chance to play it yet. It looks amazing though and I have seen brilliant reviews of it already (plus seen some gameplay on YouTube) It is a game I am sooo looking forward to trying out ; I didnt pay the demo as I didnt know there was one, so I spent 20 quid and invested in the full game.

While possibly not reason enough alone to buy a 3ds, if you enjoy this game on android/ios then you're guaranteed to love this. It has all the mechanics of the original game, but with more detailed characters, music, 3d sfx, story, maps, human characters etc. Excellent value for money for existing 3ds owners!

Two games in one card ? Heck why not . I bought it really for the mario part so far I have been enjoying it very much. I never played puzzle and dragon before on the phone ( hate hate hate micro transactions) the match three element is what one would expect and it is with mario. What is not to like.

Only just started it a few days ago and so far it is a lovely charming puzzle game mix with RPG elements which I quite enjoy. I have not tired the Mario part but I am sure I will enjoy it just as much as the main game as I do quite like Mario games.

Not yet played as it is a surprise for our little boy in a few weeks. However he has been playing it on the laptop on the free short game it gives you and he loves it . I imagine it will go down a treat.

I'm really enjoying it, great to pick up for a quick go. The RPG-style story does get in the way of the battling in Puzzles and Dragons Z though.

A superb match-3 game combined with rpg elements. If you've already paid Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords then you'll love this.
