Having subjected Pro Evolution 3 to a year of servitude, overplaying it until my fingers where nothing but bloody stumps I felt guilty when I played this game. Guilty because I immediatly realised that Pro Evo 3 was destined for retirement, to a life of gathering dust on the proverbial (or real in this case) shelf with it's forefathers. Most believed that Konami would top Pro Evolution 3 with their new rendition however few foresaw the magnitude of the change. PES4 rights the wrongs of PES3 with the style that only Asian Game Designers can produce. So have Konami improved on the supposed perfection of PES3? Why yes, they most certainly have. Not only is the game considerably more difficult (Although I venture that PES4's 6th star difficulting rating can be compared to Spinal Tap's volume: 11) but the physics and graphics have been rejigged to provide a delightful gaming experience that saturates even the most pixel-hungry of gamers needs for visual excellence. The atmosphere captured is phenomenal and the players of the now licensed leagues look perfect. Graphics aside though this game provides a challenging yet entertaining football experience that should leave no fan wanting more. The ball dips and swerves with gorgeous realism and scoring is no longer a matter of simply side - stepping and striking from the edge of the area. You do not know pleasure until you score a screamer with Nedved, or until your shot curls into the top corner - past a keeper who misjudged it and didn't even move.Stats are no longer the sum of their parts, precise stats produce different results. For example, Henry has top speed 92 - 4 lower than Owen's 96, however when he gets the ball his pace is blistering because his pace paired with his awesome acceleration, dribbling ability and general technique turns him into a footballing machine. Furthermore when someone as good as Henry gets the ball you genuinly feel like you're in trouble. Van Nistelrooy muscles off defenders with scary realism, Henry is able to touch it past tackles with deft feet and even more 'mediocre' players such as Jermaine Defoe or Emre act and feel like the real thing. So the stat's have been improved then. The Master League is amazing, Championship Manager like in it's detail. Share details of new found players with friends as you scower Brazil and Argentina for young talent then watch as they blossom into the backbone of your team. There is a seemingly endless ammount of players to be discovered and as your players grow old and senile you will have to search for more. So in theory at least this Master League could go on indefinetly. Will you do a Lazio and buy big in an attempt to win things in the here and now or develop a universally envied youth development system that supplies you with hot young talent? The decision is yours to make. However the decision as to whether or not you should buy this game should have been made a long time ago.

So, this is only the second time that I have written a review, which means that something must really be either i) great or ii) damn awful for me to write something... and that tells a lot about this game - it is unique, it is engrossing, and it is more than worthy of the price you have to pay. Let's start with the bad things - well, no official licence means no official names, and then the commentary is terrible!! - and that is it!!! - there really is nothing else that doesn't give this game the maximum possible score. At the end of the day, there is the question of the FIFA series versus the PES series, and it really depends on what you want (I own both). Ultimately,if you want to pretend to be Beckham and score some crazy wonderful goals - then FIFA is your game, without question... but IF you LOVE football, if you love the game for it's good points (the occasional wonder goals, the sheer uncertainty of it, the deflected winner in the last minute, the bad referee decisions, the dodgy offsides) - then you MUST own this game. It is more than a game, it IS football, get a wicked deflection that goes for you, or have a team dive around the pitch and have your men sent off - it is all here, it is all to be appreciated and enjoyed... THE FINAL WORD - like games? - buy FIFA... like football? - why haven't you bought this already???? - Enjoy, it truly is a wonderful piece of software

This is the best football simulation/arcade game on any games machine bar none.Konami have made subtle changes from last year and what we have is not a vastly different game but a more improved experience. Some of last years frustrating bugs now seemed to have been put to bed, however the suspect AI goalkeeper I think still needs improving.Scoring from headers require a little bit more skill rather than last year where if the ball plonked on attacking players head in the area 9 times out of ten it would be a goal. There are now licenses for Spanish, Italian and Dutch leagues - which means correct names and kits etc. But the beauty of the PC means there is a whole editing community online (with an ever growing set of tools and downloads)to assist you in editing the other leagues too. Although this is fast changing PES was never about correct names and kits - Rooney is still at Everton!!! But if you demand accurate licences and kits then Fifa is your game. But be warned gameplay wise it is inferior. Some may disappointed that the game hasn't taken a huge step forward - apart from suspect goalkeeper AI - I hope every year Konami don't do a Fifa and change things that are not broken in the first place. Thankfully they still recognise what makes a fun realistic and enjoyable simulation of the Beautiful Game.

This is a solid and very much playable PES game. It does feel a little bit `consoley' at times, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience. It certainly feels and looks more complete than some of the older PES games and certainly better than the PC edition of the Fifa games. The player editor is straight forward and easy to use. The commentary gets a bit samey and strange at times. (Sometimes the commentator describes your rubbish, several-meter-wide shot as "very close".). Thought, I suppose, it adds to the overall atmosphere of play. There's lots of depth to the game and enough to keep you playing for some time. Graphics can be cranked up to maximum if you have a mid range PC,you don't need a beastly pixel collider/accelerator to see good detail.Lots of other people who bought this game really like it, and I like it too. It's good for a blast with more than 1 player (and some beer, potentially ;)

Very Good game, I love the way you can buy an 18 year old and train him up etc. and the vast amount of players avaliable to buy.I use a keyboard at the moment, so its difficult to control, but thats not really the games fault, although it is annoying that this game seems to be a direct conversion of the playstation version, complete with squares and triangles.I don't agree that the refereeing is much better, i thought PES 2 had better refereeing. i often execute perfect slide tackles which cleanly get the ball and get pulled over by the ref. the advantage play is very good though. Also its a bit easy to get a penalty, you just go in the box, run up and down and a defender will slightly lean into you,and you'll be awarded a pen.Overall its great though, but i couldn't give it 5 stars.

With all the new features in the Master League mode and training, this makes the game a massive improvement even to players that have previous releases. Players develop or have dips in form, you can play as a real team, or a self constructed team, or as the tradditional team of nobodies. Training actually helps, and you are encouraged to buy young players and develop them as the old tactic of building your own Real Madrid just leads to old players losing form (Buy Rooney!!).The game play is fluid and fast, there are no easy goals (that I have found yet, unlike every football game I have played before, including previous PES games), and crossing from the wings is actually a realistic option. The goalie can be a bit annoying sometimes, but else is very good.

The greatest game has been re-created on the PS2 and other consoles.(Lucky X-Box owners can play online) It re-creates the passion in football. The players show realistic characteristics that they are known to do. A massive and evolutionairy master league means that player age and retire and re-spawn as young promising players. This will make two player master league teams games very interesting. Although great detail has been put into the players, the pitch and highly detailed stadia there is one thing that lets it down. The commentary is poor but improving but the crowd is good with certain teams having familiar chants. For example real Madrid and some of the Italian fans chants you will have heard before.A great game that is evolving all the time.

Well I have to say that this is the best football game ever being made but it differs from real football in one aspect which is its speed. The game speed is much faster(only for users with good graphics card) also there is no smoothness in the gameplay as compared to the real football whereas this is the only aspect of fifa football games is good which is close to real football. Apart from this problem the game is simply amazing. Other things which can be improved are the resolution of the ground field.I accept any help to slow down the gamepro evolution soccer and prince of persia are great improvement in game quality and graphics.

With a good graphics & sound card aswell as a monitor and a good joy pad. You are set for a great game. I got this game within two days which was great timing. The graphics are top, the gameplay is excellant. Unlike FIFA games, there is a midfield in this game. Loads of ways to dribble and tricks to take on your AI friend. But get a second joypad and ask a mate to join the fun.

Great game, this is the beesknees. It is far more believable as an actual game of football full of the thrills and spills that make the game so beautiful. The realism is spot on too. David James flaps every cross that comes his way. If you're a football fan then you should get it at all costs!

7.12.2004

Without doubt the most true to life football simulation ever. Beats FIFA hands down. Only negative is that I still find myself doing the same things and scoring similar goals over and over. Whichever producer cracks this problem first will have the market sown up for good!
