Philips E14 Small Edison Screw 6 Watt LED Dimmable Candle, Warm WhiteWe have two E14 candle like bulbs in scroll wall lights in alcoves of the front room. Originally we used 40W bare E14 screw candle bulbs in each and switched to generic (Homebase) 5w fluorescent lights when we changed all of the bulbs in the bungalow. These worked reasonably well but both have failed after 2yr. The scroll lights are used when wanting to read in subdued lighting in the room or for more atmospheric effect than the central (power saving) bulbThis Philips bulb (free from VINE) was tested in place of the fluorescent bulb or the 40w clear candle in the scroll light nearest to the reading chair. What I was looking for in this unit: - Light levels and coverage as with the current standard E14,Light colour which is easy on the eyes and no (excessive) glare when looking up at the bulbs, reasonably cool running and lower energy costs. So what are the (initial) results?Size – This is a chunky bulb, heavier and larger than the conventional 40W clear bulbs so may not fit all candle bulb units.Ease of fitting – somewhat fiddly but NO WORSE than other bulb types.Appearance – cannot see the shape of the bulb in the (frosted) scroll light shade so no problem with the somewhat odd shapeLag phase (start up) – None – fires up immediatelyLight levels – Compared to an 8w fluorescent and also the 40W clear, this (6W) light was brighter ( 40W equivalent claimed) – very good. It does, however, project a cone upwards and a circle of light on the ceiling – depends if you like this. Probably it won’t be as apparent with both scroll lights with the same bulb.It certainly adds to the overall illumination. Could be used in an up light situation?Colour (temperature) – warm white (3000K) – pleasant and not overpowering like some LED systems.Heat generated – could not detect any heat build up – even after an hour in use – i.e. handling the ceramic base was still possible. Perhaps the tubular shape of the scroll light shade provides plenty of ventilation.Dimmability – Feasible with this bulb but our current system does not have a dimmer switch in circuit.(I recently reviewed a similar TCP bulb which was NOT recommended for circuits with dimmer systems, so this Philips bulb has a bonus function here – if required).Length of life – to be assessed – 25000h claimedCost effectiveness/value for money - Price – varies depending on Amazon / supplier offers (at least 2-3 x higher than current fluorescent units)Savings – I will need to check electricity over time – changing one bulb alone may not show up – I have already noted the effects of changing ALL of the house bulbs although there are some other power guzzlers in the house despite selecting energy efficient units (suspect the Miele freezer!) .The bulb has an A+ efficiency rating.Environmental – at least this LED bulb is mercury free, unlike most of the fluorescent tubes being strongly promoted so final disposal should be no problem – unless there are any other “harmful” metals present.I rate the Philips bulb provisionally at 5 stars for its immediate performance and features.

Philips are arguably the leader the higher-end LED bulbs. Their products tend to be high quality and relatively affordable. I have many G10 halogen replacement LED bulbs in my home but very few “standard” bulb replacements as I found they either weren’t available or at a very high price. As always with Philips products, this came nicely & securely packaged. This is a SES or Small Edison Screw fit making it mostly suitable for table lamps. The bulb fits perfectly well in my lamp but it was a little wider & taller than traditional bulbs so it’s worth considering prior to buying. The brightness is definitely equivalent to a 40W bulb, certainly brighter than the 25W CFL it replaced. It has a very pleasant warm light very similar to a traditional bulb. The small glass crown-like structure is intended to refract the light thus giving a slightly twinkling appearance. Therefore this bulb is intended to be on-show (mines actually hidden). Although it’s pleasant to look at, I didn’t find the “sparkling” effect that great in my installation but above a dining table or on a wall I think this would work very well. What makes this stand-out is that it’s DIMMABLE. This adds to the cost due to the additional electronics required. I wasn’t able to check this but again I think this would be ideal for an overhead fitting or wall light.Overall for feature lighting such as wall lighting or a chandelier type affair, this would be a great addition; a feature in itself. The current Amazon price of £10 is around 4x the price of a CFL (which I hate as they only seem to last a year or 2). I find this quite reasonable for something which should last many years and is of good quality. If you have any questions regarding dimensions or anything else, feel free to comment.

Older LED bulbs often disappoint with output, colour, size, shape or whatever. This one is very close to 40W incandescents, in terms of brightness and colour, according to my camera's meter as well as my eye. It gives a really attractive light and stays cool to the touch. I haven't been able to try dimming it.The bulb gives maximum output almost instantly, when switched on - there's no warm-up period.Downsides? It's fatter and longer than incandescents, approximately 40mm diameter and 110mm long, which will matter in some fittings. That's about all, except for the bubble-plastic packaging - awkward and sharp to get into, impossible to stack and hence a pain to store.Presumably it's designed to look good on the shelf; give me a nice rectangular box every time!I'm not a fan of `warm white', preferring something closer to daylight, say 5000 Kelvin rather than 2700, but 'warm white' is well-liked by many. Choose this bulb if you like the `warmth' of tungsten, otherwise try searching Amazon for `daylight led e14' or `cool white led e14'.If you run these for an average of, say, 3 hours/day for a year, and you're paying 12p/kWh for electricity (chances are you're paying more), then each bulb will save you almost £5 p.a. They'll last 18 years, if Philips is to be believed, so, at £12.50, will pay for themselves in 2.5 years and then you'll be in profit. You'll also get the benefits of (a) rarely having the hassle of changing them (b) no tripping of the electricity when they do fail. Oh, and you can feel good about doing a tiny bit for the planet.Assuming the physical size is acceptable, these bulbs are well worth the money.

Looks great in a chandelier, we have a large chandelier over landing always difficult to get to for changing bulbs. Hoping that this one will make it easier for a long time before having to replace it.A nice warm glow about it, the fitting is a small screw in one and the size of the bulb slightly chunkier than ones we usually use, but with fitting not having shades no problems.Only thing is now could do with six more to complete the look in the fitting. The inside of it looks really delicate and when opened I did find a small fragment of glass inside the box. However bulb itself fine. Thinking will see how this goes for next few months, then maybe buy some more when on offer. Not used this with a dimmer switch so can not say how it works on that score but with a normal switch great and not a lag when switched on like some of the older style ones tended to be like.Am a lover of these new LED bulbs as the light they emit is good and also the length of time before having to replace them is usually good with the Philips ones. That saying we tend to have quite a few power cuts out in the sticks and the bulbs (Philips and other makes) still seem to be going strong. Yes they may appear expensive but over time they save both money and tricky to reach light dramas. The bulb came in a plastic shrink wrapped container inside a brown Amazon box, so well packed.

I tried this Philips E14 ES LED bulb in a table light with an in-line dimmer. The immediate impression of the bulb is that it is well made and with the Philips pedigree should be safe and long lasting. Initially I was a bit surprised to find a Warm White bulb with a totally clear rather than opaque cover though.Once fitted the lamp gives off a bright, warm light which belies its clear construction. In terms of brightness it is comparable to the 60 watt bulb it replaced, however, the fact that it is consuming a tenth of the power is great and means we'll now use the table light as a security light too. This bulb will pay for itself in no time.In terms of physical size it is no bigger than incandescent variety it replaced. The table lamp has an in-line dimmer and this Philips bulb worked perfectly with it - there's no flicker at any brightness level. Also, welcome is the fact that this bulb generates very little heat compared to conventional one.In summary, a quality bulb from Philips, with warm and plentiful output plus it only consumes 6W - that's what I'd call a win-win. Recommended.

This is a nice-looking small LED bulb, and it arrived in strong protective polythene wrapping. The quality of the light is pleasant and not harsh, it is cold to the touch, and if its expected operational lifetime is really 20 years or so as claimed it is likely to pass on to my successors in title. I have retained the bulb that was there before it, so that will be there for them as well.I take seriously my obligation to be sparing in energy usage, and of course I had better take my electric bill seriously too. I can’t, obviously, isolate this particular item from the overall bill, but the claims made for its economical running can surely be taken on trust, at least approximately.I have a chandelier controlled by a dimmer switch above my bed. This fixture has 5 bulbs, only 2 of which now work, and I am quite content to leave matters that way for all the need I have to use this overhead light. A dead bulb is the most economical kind of all. Otherwise this new bulb looks like being my everyday companion on my computer table for the rest of my natural span, so I extend it a welcome.

I'm not saying that Phillips pricing is unfair. However you are likely to be buying several of these at one time, and that makes them a costly investment compared with other types of LED bulbs. Despite that, they are still better value than any CFL or incandescent bulb.In terms of light quality these are no better than Phillips other LED offerings. Being dimmable is a plus that significantly adds to the cost. The other extra costs comes from the fancy apperance of the bulb. In order to produces something which looks appropriate for a chandelier or candelabra fitting, Phillips have needed to use a much more difficult and complex structure, to manufacture.I have being uses Phillips LED bulbs for several years now, with not one failing. I think that you can assume the same high reliabilty, with this new design. So if you must have dimmimable, clear, candle shaped bulbs, then these are the ones that I would most recommend. If you don't need all those three criteria, then there are cheaper alternative worth looking at.

For those with dimmer switches we know that energy saving varieties are hard to come by, with many off the shelf in shops not compatible. I was pleased to come across this LED bulb so thought I'd give it a try.It comes in a fancy looking box, more like something you would get a small electrical item in rather than a bulb, so the impression of quality started immediately. Straight out the box and into our light and the difference in the light quality is immediately obvious from the standard, non energy saving bulb it replaced. The light was a lot warmer and more natural looking and over long periods of time with it on, it remained very satisfying on the eye.The one problem I do have with them though is the price. You can get many equivalent non-energy saving/non-LED bulbs for the price of one of these so it may limit its appeal somewhat. For me though, if they do last as they claim, I will replace all my other bulbs with one of these, mainly because the light it gives off is much nicer and easier on the eye.

Ok so I have bought lots of different types of energy saving bulbs in an effort to find the best ones that most closely replace traditional bulbs and these Philips LED bulbs are the best I have found so far. They are very bright, at least as bright as the 40w bulbs they are designed to replace if not brighter. Their warm white colour is perfect too, just like an incandescent or a halogen and yet only 6 watts which is a massive saving. The clever light scattering prism inside makes the bulbs quite attractive to look at too - though they are so bright you can't really look at them unless they are dimmed a little. The only minor flaw I have found is that whilst they certainly do work with dimmer switches, they seem more sensitive and below a certain current, they won't actually stay on at all so if you're the type who puts a 40w bulb in a dimmer switch and likes to keep the bulb really dim on minimum juice a lot, this might not be ideal for you.

WARNING : If, like me, you've been experimenting with all sort of new lighting systems that you can dim from your iPhone and change colours from your iPhone then you've come to expect lighting systems capable of everything and anything. So it was rather a surprise when I saw this light described as Dimmable. I really did imagine it was another one of those lights that would hook up to my wireless system an i could take control of it with some slick new app.Nope. Nothing at all like it. Apparently it means you can put this bulb in a fitting where the switch has the traditional dimmer on the switch. Well, maybe I'm being a bit too expectant but I never knew there were bulbs you COULDN'T put in a socket that was dimmable? So they are starting the obvious or are some LED bulbs not capable of having a varied current passed through them and thus are not dimmable?Dissapointed. Other than that, it a good lightbulb. Good value for money. etc.

We have this set up in our hall. The hall is normally a bit dark using the old fashioned energy efficient E14 bulbs. This 6 watt bulb has an amazingly bright, clear light. It has been used to replace an 8 watt energy efficient bulb, of the florescent tube type, and what a difference. We have not had it up and running long enough to see how it will last, so time will tell on that front. We have not tested the claim that it is dimmable, we have no dimmable fittings now, they were all taken out when we first put energy efficient bulbs in. I will have to refit dimmable switches to see, a job for a boring holiday day!The bulb is almost like a flower in it's construction,so it looks attractive even when turned off! With the clear bright light the bulb gives out, I have now had it pointed out that the hall could possibly do with a coat of paint. However, this is a really good bulb, we are very pleased with it.

It seems Philips really are leading the way in bulb design currently, the plastic base is securely fitted to the tough glass, it's solid and gives confidence if the bulb were to be dropped or if the lamp it is in falls over, which has killed many a throwaway bulb in the past. The centre star reflects and angles the light creating a really bright centre and a wide range of light. It is also the first LED bulb advertised as "warm white" that actually lives up to this claim, I couldn't tell the difference in this and an older filament bulb. All in all it is a compact, quality bulb with a high quality build which looks like it will last as long as the bulb is still working, and if it truly is anywhere near the 20 years as touted I can see every bulb I have being switched out with this line by Philips. The price may put some off, but the money you spend will be made up in the years it will last.

This is an attractive bulb, with its crown, and if you are currently running 40w incandescent bulbs you can fell smug that this could pay for itself in a couple of years (assuming you use it 4 hours a day) if ..and it's a big if, the bulb lasts. My experience is even with led bulbs that if they are enclosed fittings they do not have anything like the stated life expectancy. Time will tell.In use this worked fined with my existing dimmer, which is great because I have had to change to leading edge dimmers for other led because of the low load. The output is indeed warm - in fact you really can't tell the difference from an incandescent. The only thing to watch out for is that these are slightly longer and fatter than most candle bulbs.I wish they were cheaper - but it does seem like a quality product and should be fit and forget. A huge advantage if you are fitting in a chandelier!

I love LED bulbs and am working through my house replacing horrible stick and curly ones and also halogens. LED's give off a lovely warm "yellowish" light very reminiscent of incandescent bulbs. The light is instant and unwavering - I suffer from migraines and have noticed a reduction in them. I also do not feel the urge to move from the room so early in the evening. The bulb screws in easily and gives off a slightly "sparkling" light - sort of a light and slight shade effect reflected on my white walls - it is very pretty . I have dropped one star as I think the special effect makes the bulb less useful - great for the living room lamp but not so useful for a reading lamp in the bedroom.I hope LED's do last well - I have been using for about 4 months now and have not had any blown lamps (Halogens were partcularly bad value). Obviously cannot comment on the 20 year longevity claim.

I actually find it hard to believe this is an energy efficient bulb... it's bright, it works with a dimmer, there's no lag when switched on, and it look like a normal bulb (from a distance).Yes, it is more expensive than a traditional bulb but saving so much on electricity (it uses 6W compared to 40W standard) and with a longer life, it's really the way forward. It also stays surprisingly cool by comparison to traditional bulbs. The one I reviewed was branded warm white, but don't be put off - it's certainly not a blue shade of white which is cool, but it's not too warm either. In fact, alongside traditional bulbs it is very white indeed. The only downside is the plastic section of the bulb reaches a lot higher than a traditional bulb so there is more directionality to the light, but once you have all the lights using these bulbs it's not noticeable.Very good indeed!
