I’m reviewing a pair of B22 bayonet cap bulbs here, so I can’t comment on the GU10 versions, but certainly for the standard B22/E27, what I’d think of as “normal lightbulbs”, these are pretty much the same size overall as a regular energy-saving bulb. The majority of the body is the plastic casing rather than the bulb itself, but the shape of the bulb allows the light to spread uniformly and in a way that allows them to operate much like a regular energy-saving bulb to all intents and purposes. So for everyday bulb use, you won’t notice the difference, and they are certainly capable of producing ‘regular’ light for those days when you don’t want mood lighting,you just want lighting.If you’re in more of a mood though- whether it’s party, romantic, or various shades of weird- then this where Hue really kicks in. Setting up smart control with an Echo Dot is really easy- it’s hard to think of how it could’ve been any easier. A good range of colours is available through voice control. Extra precision is available through the nicely intuitive app, and to take things up another level, you can even link it to your IFTTT account- allowing you to do a selection of quite remarkable integrations. For example if you’re playing Spotify on your TV, you can get these Hue bulbs to match the dominant colour from the artwork of the album you’re listening to! Admittedly on a daily basis that seems like just a novelty rather than something you’d want to experience routinely, but it does show the power of the smart home if you’ve got the inclination (and the budget) to set it all up. I’m sure more practical uses are also available as well, but mostly I’m just stuck in thinking about them as disco bulbs!I’ve bought a handful of different lesser-known brand smart bulbs before, because it is possible to find cheaper smart bulbs that promise the same functionality. And for some uses, they’re OK- but generally speaking, their colour capabilities were somewhat limited. They were good on basic primary colour lighting, but they fell down when asking to try and reproduce more mature, subtle or warmer colours- giving you something artificial instead, sometimes bordering on sickly. Luckily these Philips bulbs have no such issues there. The colours feel natural and likeable, within reason. Of course they’re capable of horrible greens and sleazy reds too, but at least they’re not limited to them.As you’d expect from Philips, the build quality is excellent, these are very durable bulbs- slightly heavier than equivalent energy-savers, but not excessively so, and reassuringly made. I have no doubt about their longevity being as good as equivalent non-smart bulbs.These Hue bulbs were an instant hit here and will prove to be more than just novelty items for sure. Another welcome step into the world of the future, etc.!

I got the really bright ones, 100 W equivalent, as I hate gloomy rooms. You can say 'Alexa set lights to X' where X is any value in the range 0 to 100. Alexa will let you control them individually or together depending on how you group them when configuring in Alexa.I had a tedious time with the Hue Bluetooth app and Alexa, getting things set up, and got so fed up that I bought a Hue Bridge. Glad I did, as Alexa works far more reliably with that, and I can bypass Alexa by using the Hue (non-Bluetooth) app to directly control the bridge if I want.My advice: Get the Hue Bridge. Without that, you are in for a lot of tedium, with the things working one day, but not the next.My Hue Bridge sits next to my router and for security I connect it with a short LAN cable rather than via wi-fi. With the bridge, you get to be able to control the things while away from home, which may be useful to you. You will need to set up a Philips Hue account and install the Philips Hue Bridge skill in the Alexa app, but you only need to do that once.Note that there are dozens of randomly-named Chinese smart bulbs and smart switches. They all use wi-fi, want to know your wi-fi password, and will scavenge other info about you via your network. I don't want my light bulbs knowing my wi-fi password. I don't trust them to keep the info secure. I opted to go with Bluetooth and ZigBee.The Philips Hue bulbs and smart switches support both Bluetooth and ZigBee. If you get the Hue Bridge, it will use ZigBee to control them, which is far more reliable than Bluetooth, works at greater range, and can support more devices in total. Without the Hue Bridge, Alexa and Echo Dot/Show/etc devices have to use Bluetooth, and it is a bit flaky. I hate Bluetooth's overall fickleness, whether it be for controlling smart devices, or using headphones, or whatever; usually it leads to a mess if you have lots of Bluetooth devices. But ZigBee works well.

I don't have a smart hub at home since the last one stopped working, but I do have a couple of Echo Dots, so it was with these in mind that I set up this pair of smart bulbs. If you are fortunate enough to own a smart hub (or an Echo Plus/Echo Show 10, which come with one built in) then you can use the regular Philips Hue smart bulbs. However, if you don't own a smart hub of any kind, then Philips has you covered with its Bluetooth range of smart bulbs.At their most basic, these bulbs only require a bluetooth device that's recent enough to run their Philips Hue Bluetooth app. You download the app, plug the bulbs in and get the app to scan for them - it then picks them up and adds them to your app automatically.The whole process takes just a couple of minutes, and is very easy to do.Beyond this, you can connect these bulbs to your smart device (such as Amazon Echo or Google Home) for voice control. Rather than connecting via the app, the bulbs are connected directly to the smart device via Bluetooth, which is very simple to do, though does mean you need to be within Bluetooth range.Once connected to your smart device, you can control the colours and power settings via the Hue app or via voice control. In addition, with Alexa and Google Home you can set up routines that involve your smart bulbs, and this is where they really shine (excuse the pun). For example, I've set both my kids to have a 'bedtime' routine - any music is automatically stopped, the lights are dimmed for reading, and Alexa says "Please get into bed, it's time for stories". Depending on your room and any other smart devices you have, you can set up some great routines that are fun and helpful to carry out.If you don't own a smart hub (or any devices with a built-in smart hub) but are looking for a couple of smart bulbs for either app-control or voice control, these are a great purchase.

The Philips Hue Smart Lighting system is well established and one of the best Smart Home lighting products currently available. This new Bluetooth bulb is an attempt to simplify things by doing away with the need for a separate controlling hub, and although this bulb is still a part of the Hue family it can be operated independently by using the ‘Philips Hue Bluetooth’ Smartphone app and by voice control with Alexa and Google Assistant. This is a mixed solution as although it does make setup nice and easy using Bluetooth you don't get all the control features offered by the full Wi-Fi hub version of Hue – but if you already have a hub you get the best of both worlds.There are three versions of this bulb on the same Amazon product page – the UK B22 Bayonet, the E27 standard Edison Screw and the G10 spot – and these are available singly or in better-value multi-packs of two or three. I have a single E27 which is rated at 8.5 Watts, 806 Lumen, and by using the app you can vary the colour temperature from cool to warm white and dim to suit the time of day. On the negative side this bulb is not all that bright at maximum and at around twenty-five pounds seems very expensive compared to it's competition – although the Philips build-quality is very good. This bulb should have an average life of 25,000 hours so may pay for itself over time, and the simple setup will suit some users – however, if you are considering setting up a new home Smart lighting system you would probably be better off starting with the regular Wi-Fi hub version of Philips Hue. If you just need one or two Smart Bulbs these Bluetooth models are worth considering - if you are comfortable with the high price. Four stars for quality, value and features at the current price.

I wanted to get started with smart bulbs but know very little about them and how they work. I don’t have an Alexa and don’t want to purchase a Hue Bridge so just wanted something I can control via an app on my phone.Philips Hue seem to be regarded as the best smart bulbs available, although they are quite expensive for what they are so I stuck to the basics and just got the warm white bulbs which can be dimmed. I mainly wanted a dimmable bulb for my bedroom lamp as it tends to be too bright if I wake up during the night and switch it on.I’m very pleased with these bulbs despite feeling like they are overpriced. Setting them up was so easy - just screw them in, switch the lamps on,and the Philips Hue Bluetooth app discovered the bulbs and connected in a few seconds. As my flat is small the Bluetooth range works everywhere, so I can switch on a lamp before I enter a room! The app is easy to use and the bulbs seem to be very responsive to the on/off and dimming controls. The bulbs are also a nice warm white colour and have good brightness.As far as I’ve seen these bulbs will work with most new smartphones but not older ones, so I would suggest checking if your smartphone and operating system are supported before buying.I’m not sure if the experience would be as straightforward when trying to connect with a Hue Bridge or Alexa, but if you’re just looking for a simple way to join the world of smart bulbs I would definitely recommend these.

This smart bulb produces a warm white light - bright enough to be the only light source in a smallish room. I'd say its brightness is equivalent to the 10w non-smart LED it replaced.Most of the lights in my flat are Hue bulbs now, which talk to the Hue hub over wifi, which in turn communicates with Alexa. There have been times when my wifi router has been less than reliable so I was intrigued by the bluetooth functionality of this bulb.First things first - I don't think always-on bluetooth for a device like this is the best solution, particularly if it's just via your phone. As bad as my wifi is, it isn't as patchy and short ranged as my phone's bluetooth capability.Another issue is that the Hue bluetooth app is completely separate to the regular hub-based one. I would've preferred the bluetooth functionality and the wifi hub functionality to be accessible via the same interface, but I expect there were technical issues in achieving this. The bluetooth app does work and I could see it still being useful if you don't have a hub - at the very least it's nice being able to control a light remotely - eg if you're already in bed and have forgotten to turn it off!This lightbulb also works with the hub in the same way that older models have. It was a breeze to set up and integration with Alexa was seamless too, as shown in the attached video.In short - bluetooth is good in a pinch, but the best experience is with a hub.

as a previous buyer of these hue bulbs i realised that it was going to need 2 bulbs to provide enough light to make them viable for use in a kitchen environment so i purchased these e27 versions and a seperate b22 to 2x e27 adapter for my main kitchen lights so now with alexa i can just say kitchen lights on / off or if i dont need that level of illumination i can say kitchen 1 / 2 on which is fine for making a brew or grabbing stuff from the fridge.setup is a little odd, if you just want to use alexa you just plug the light in turn it on and say alexa discover devices and with that its all done in about 1 min however if you also want app control then you need to set them up with the huebluetooth app first then fanny around within that to get it working with alexa.the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is so far it's "lost" one of the bulbs resulting in having to power off the bulb at the switch for a while then power back on and use the alexa app to reconnect it by holding your tablet 15cm from the bulb, no easy task if need sticks to stand, if you ever need to do a factory reset on the bulbs then a google search and a complex set of timed power cycles is required.frankly i just wish that the smart bulb socket converters were more readily available so we could just use regular cheap dumb bulbs in light fittings where all you need is a smart on/off (like a kitchen).

For a £40 light bulb one would expect nothing less than a quality product that delivers its promises. Which this Hue bulb does. However, a few gripes I have with the product, or perhaps with the Hue ecosystem in general, relate to its strict requirements for Bluetooth use. You cannot control these Bluetooth lights with anything other than an Android or iPhone device, or your smart speaker (Echo, Google Home etc.). This means if one wished to control this from their computer, they'll be sorely disappointed. You also will not be able to sync up the lights with music, control them with IFTTT (if this then that), or do anything much other than control the basic features via the single Hue Bluetooth app (which does its job without a fuss)without the proprietary Phillips Hue Bridge which links your local network of lights together. Set-up was quick and painless, no issues. Option available for the default turn-on setting - useful for when you accidentally flick the old light switch off out of habit, and want to recover the last colour you had.Over-all it's a decent product but would benefit from being more accessible on computers, perhaps a web interface (with the Bluetooth-only option). Bridge owners will find this more featureful, however for £40 per bulb, plus £45 for a Bridge, one ought to have deep pockets for this pet lighting project.Would recommend.

For people like me who are new to this game the instructions are rubbish. Get the app! Which one I ask? Get the wrong one and it tries to connect to a bridge. What’s a bridge I ask? Something I haven’t got seemingly. Ah but look closer on the app store and you find Philips Hue Bluetooth below the Philips Hue app which requires a bridge. So download the bluetooth version to my iphone se and the magic begins. Once you have the bluetooth app the set up is straight forward as long as you are used to using bluetooth. The choice of colours is amazing. The only thing I can’t seem to do is change both lights to the same colour at the same time when I am selecting the settings like ‘seasons’.I have to go into another section to adjust one of them. Not sure why that is but it is no big deal as I won’t be changing the lights often. You get back to the normal warm white light by turning the light switch on and off. They are an expensive novelty so lose one star for that (and the lack of instructions) but I love them!Update two days later. I discovered you can edit the settings on each of the set themes like seasons. I love these so much I have ordered a starter kit which has the bridge and three bulbs. Still loses one star though for the price. Cheaper on a well known auction site.

Works well, it uses very little power in standby, much less than having a full hue system running. All we wanted was lighting when approaching or leaving the house, so we didn't want to invest in a full system. The app on the phone takes 5 to 10 seconds to run and synchronise with the lightbulb, so a small delay, but the range is very good (tried up to 80m) so if your approaching the house, then its not a problem, especially if your a passenger in the car or walking.To setup the light on the phone, you do it when the light switch is turned on at the switch, and from that point on the settings are remembered by the phone and the light. So there is no danger of other people hijacking your lights.If you want more phones to have access, just switch off the light at the switch, turn it back on and synchronise the next phone. The one app can manage lots of lights.The light is also nice and bright illuminating the path, but if you like to leave the light on, then you can dim the light and save power.Other features include countdowns to lights been turned off or at specific times, but that does require your phone running the app, so probably not something that is actually useful, probably better to have a hue system if you want that sort of functionality.

It’s difficult to show off the variation of colours that Philips Hue can achieve, but I’ve added a few pics to show how vibrant it is.If you just wanted one bulb, you can control this from the Philips Hue Bluetooth app and even one bulb makes a big difference to the atmosphere of your room. I have a few bulbs in my room and with the click of a button my white walls can be come cream or even whiter with the energise setting.If you’re just dipping you toe into Philips Hue this would be a good start, but when you see how good it is, you will soon want to expand your collection.If you have (or get the home hub) you can set your light to come on at random intervals, mimic a sunrise and sunset,or follow a pattern, you can even add the dimmer / button to your light which is magnetic and attaches to a metal bed frame (excellent when you cannot be bothered to get out of bed to turn the light/s off.Overall a great smart bulb that is energy efficient and bright enough to use in a desk or floor lamp as well as wall and ceiling lights.If you happen to have found this review helpful, I would really appreciate you giving it a thumbs up - it’s a great motivation to keep on reviewing. I have several smart bulbs and I have to say this one stands out. Out of the box it is mega simple to install (using Echo anyway). Soon as you put bulb in and switch on my Echo dot picked up a new device and installation was over in a minute or two.Having these bulbs do not require a hub, they are dimmer bulbs so, in our case, we turned our main living room lights into dimable (words?!? Lol) without changing our light switches.Works with the Philips app and/or Echo so Alexa can control your lights on voice command.Phillips Hue command a high price, but for me you get what you pay for. I recommend this bulb but would recommend you keep an eye out for sale offers which seem to come up quite often.I managed to pick up half price offers so jump on them when they come up.There is one con, if it is one, that’s having to train yourself not to switch the light switch off or the obvious outcome is you can’t control your bulbs using app or echo ... this took a little mind training on our part and occasionally we forget. It’s not a big deal really, just means you are back to an old fashion manual switching on and off of your lights ... the hardship!But with extreme confidence.

These were very easy to set up with my Alexa, as soon as I installed the bulbs Alexa picked then straight up. Using the Alexa app I could quickly rename each bulb so I can control each individually as well as grouping them to control them collectively. As I have mobility issues just being able to switch on a lamp by voice which was previously hard to access for me is invaluable. Also two of my hall lights are on the same switch so now I can control each light separately as I often only need one on.I’m not sure if I will replace all the bulbs in my home as some lights are just as easily turned on by the switch but for the three I have replaced it has certainly made life easier and addressedproblems.I had noticed with some other bulbs that you had to change the WiFi GHz in your home and also use other apps other than Alexa, this made set up rather complicated. This was unacceptable to me and just too hard. These bulbs may be more expensive but it was very much worth it to me to avoid this hassle.Overall I’m very happy but of course would appreciate Phillips being a bit more competitive in price especially with the colour ones which are just a ridiculous price!

These are the next gen Philips Hue bulbs which were released around Sept 2019. They now include Bluetooth which enables the bulbs to work without the Hue bridge which connects to your modem. I would recommend you have the bridge to allow you full control and add extra lights! Once you start buying into hue, you don’t stop!!I went for the white bulb as I placed this in my hallway where I don’t need to control the colour temperature. The white ambience allows you to change shades of white. This bulb is a fixed warm white. You can still dim the bulb without buying a dimmer. The dimming is controlled via the app or Alexa/google.As soon as I plugged them in, the Philips Hue app detected them immediately when I scanned for new devices.I have a hue bridge but these also work without a hue bridge and via the app. There are some limitations without the bridge such as software updates and the number of lights you can have.These lights are bright, at 800 lumen.I have set a timer - sunset to sunrise via the hue app so these come on automatically and turn off at sunrise. Helps with security.

Delivered by Parcel Force in an Amazon branded bubble wrap envelope .I'm only just starting to move my home into the 21st century , and don't have an Alexa Or Google so never contemplated getting these before, even though I have read rave reviews .These lights are so Simple to set upThe bulbs have a Bayonet fitting and are the same size as the energy saving bulbs I already use .So I didn't have any problems fitting them .I download the Phillips Hue Bluetooth app and paired the lights after spending 15 minutes on the Demo .I've got one in my bedroom and the other in my living room , being able to use the Bluetooth app is a game changer ,I can just about work a mobile phone lol .Having so much choice of colours hues and brightness these lights are going to keep me amused for months finding the best colours for my rooms .I'm. Seriously impressed and can understand why they have been priced at this price point .I'm currently giving 4 stars because you never know how long a bulb will last . If hey are still performing in six months lll probably give them the extra one .
