Initially on receiving the toothbrush it looked sleek, well designed and pleasing on the eye. It came with a travel case which is useful to keep it protected when travelling away. Now to the performance. Having used other branded electric toothbrushes for years, it was initially an odd sensation as the head does not rotate on your teeth/gums. Instead of rotating it oscillates thousands of times a minute to create a brushing action. I found it initially difficult to know how much pressure to apply and whether to manually brush or allow the toothbrush to do its thing. You quickly adjust and I can confirm that you are left with teeth that feel properly clean/ polished following one cycle. The toothbrush features a pressure sensor which beeps to inform you if you are applying too much pressure. This has taken some time to adjust to as I found it too sensitive at the beginning, however, overtime I have found the optimum pressure to apply. I find the brush head slightly too soft for my liking. I have, however not had time to try other heads offered by Philips and may find one slightly firmer. The head shape itself is similar to a normal manual toothbrush and although great for the front of the teeth, I sometimes struggle to find a good angle to brush the reverse side of my teeth. A shorter head size would make this easier. The built in quad timer is useful, although not always notable. A larger pause in the brush action or a beeping sound would make it easier to distinguish. The toothbrush comes with three different modes. Clean / White / Gums. In my experience the only difference is the set time that the toothbrush operates for before auto switch off. Useful however if you feel you need a deeper clean. Finally the battery life. Promised at 14 days based on twice daily use. For myself the battery life lasted closer to 10 days. I did, however not charge the toothbrush upon receiving it, therefore unsure if it was at 100% charge. Longer time to test the product will allow for a more accurate comment on the battery life. A major positive is that right up to running out of charge, the Sonicare 5100 delivered full performance, which is unlike some of its rivals, which have been known to slowly decrease speed/intensity.The cost of replacement heads for Philips toothbrushes are a little on the expensive side. It must however be taken into consideration that Philips state they can last up to 3 months therefore you will only require 4 a year and the cost may end up equaling that of rival brands.Overall this is a very impressive toothbrush. Delivers on the main priority of cleaning teeth and although difficult to notice in one week. I do believe it has began to reduce some yellow staining which has built up from years of using poor electric/manual brushes. Battery life is huge plus too.My reasoning for 4 stars is that this is an expensive toothbrush and for the price I would of expected it to deliver more. I would recommend to all without hesitation. This Philips Sonicare Protective Clean 5100 electric toothbrush with a matt black finish is another mid-range model and comes complete with a charger, two brush heads and a hard travel case.If your current Philips electric tooth brush is a year old it would not be worth upgrading. In my experience these toothbrushes last beyond their 2 year warranty, though you may find the battery has degraded a little over time.Incidentally, I returned a Philips tooth brush that failed at 23 months and one week. Fair play to Amazon and Philips as they do stand by their warranty.I have tried other brands but I still prefer the Sonicare. They are less bulky and much more tactile to hold. They are also quieter and doesn’t vibrate as much as other brands while still giving an excellent clean. I’m not keen on feeling and hearing heavy vibrations from inside my head. The two week battery life claim is about right but will depend on what kind of usage it receives, the more you brush the more you will need to charge.I tend to press too hard when I brush my teeth so the pressure sensor is of real benefit. There are 3 brushing modes, clean, white and gum care. It has a quad timer so you can divide your brushing equally in the four quarters of your mouth. Up left, down left, up right, down right. The brush heads is fairly standard except that on the base there appears to be an electrical contact of some description. This, I expect is to do with the brush head replacement reminder. I’m not sure if it is of real benefit except for the manufacturer getting you to buy a new brush head. After all, most of us know when the brush head needs replacing. I’m not sure whether there should be two brush heads as this is not specified in the advert.I would prefer a softer brush head option to be included. There is also a price premium on these ‘smart’ brush heads so keep your eyes open for offers, or just use a standard replacement and save yourself £10-15.In conclusion I still think the Philips Sonicare Protective Clean 5100 is a very good toothbrush and deserves a full five stars for performance and ease of operation. One minor thing to say, as the handle is black it shows up any excess toothpaste you leave unless of course you are using the new charcoal paste that has arrived on the market. However, I think the high price and being £100 more expensive that the 4300 model is a little rich given that the cleaning performance is the same. The cost does not reflect that this is a mid-range product. Wait a few months and I am sure the price will be more respectable and affordable when there are offers. I’m definitely not keen on the price premium for the smart brush heads when in reality I can see if a brush head needs changing.I do wonder what more Philips will add to the feature set in a years time, maybe the next model will stop you from using it by locking it down until you change a brush head when it tells you to? Let’s hope not.

Much like most Sonicare toothbrushes, this one comes in three parts. There's the handset - the bit that you charge, which lets you set brush speed and turn it off and on. Then there's the charging station - which plugs into the wall, and which you put the handset on when the battery goes flat. Finally, there's the toothbrush heads, which, you know, actually clean your teeth. Between them, they make a cohesive whole. The charging station for this model is small, with a fairly long two pin cable you can use to plug it into the wall. It's structured to be stable when you put a handset on it, but small enough that it's easy to pack up for travelling. The curved lines are aesthetically pleasing, too,and the base feels reassuringly sturdy. The handset has the same designed aesthetic as the charging station. It's also compatible with previous generations of Philips charger - handy if you want t use one for travel and keep one at home. The handset has three different modes - Clean, White, and Gum. Gum is a more gentlerotation, designed for gum care and to prevent cleaning. White and Clean are progressively more aggressive, and creat for giving you that post-dentist clean feeling, or shifting stubborn stains from enamel. The controls for switching mode and turning the handset on and off feel slightly rubery, and allow a good grip even if your hands are already wet. This model coes with a pressure sensor, which seems to brr a little during brushing if you'repushing too hard. It may be a bit subtle for me, but I appreciate the effort. The battery life is pretty solid, too - after a couple of weeks of daily use, it has yet to run out of juice (again, handy if you travel). This model comes with a couple of brush heads - it's always nice to have a spare - and appears to be compatible with Philips standard heads, if you've got leftovers. The included heads are apparently 'smart'. communicating with the handset when they need to be replaced (the handset has an indicator light which will presumably light up when this is the case). I'm not sure it's a particularly useful innovation, but it's an interesting novelty on brush heads. This model also has a sturdy plastic travel case, which yu can use to carry all of the above about in, if you're so inclined; it's fairly robust, and survived being dropped on a tile floor, so it may be useful. The actual cleaning performance is rock solid, especially in 'clean' mode; you can almost feel grime lifting from your molars! If not quite dentist-clean, it's certainly a long way there with a twice-daily brush.Overall, this is a finely engineered bit of kit, which provides an excellent cleaning for your teeth and gums.

I've used electric toothbrushes for years now and far prefer them to manual brushes simply because they do a better job. I've tended to use Oral B ones however I also have a like a Philips Sonicare brush too. I was interested to see what a new Sonicare brush would be like. There is plenty to like here. The basic point has to be cleaning and at that this model is very good indeed. I've been using this one for a week now. I would argue that this has given me the best clean of any brushes I've used previously. I will definite look at trying another head on it though as it is not clear exactly what the brush head included is. There are two, they appear the same, however the box states that a "gum care" brush head is included. There is a two year warranty on this and there is a carrying case with it. The charger - with two pin plug - is also included. In use I found the handle very good to hold. Charging was easy. Based on current use the 14 day battery life doesn't look like an exaggeration however I'll update this when I need to charge it. There are options that can be switched on or off fairly simply. I switched off the brush replacement reminder as I am still using the old Sonicare head from my previous brush. I tend not to use the modes on these things and just stick with the cleaning one.So far so good. However I do have some issues with this toothbrush. The first and most important is the price. At over 250 quid it is a very expensive brush to my mind and I'm not really sure what it offers you that a less expensive toothbrush doesn't. I have an Oral B one with Bluetooth for example. I don't want that feature but at least I see why that brush might command a premium price. I have found nothing so far to suggests that this should though the battery life looks infinitely better than Oral B's offerings.I have other small niggles too at this price. The pressure sensor light is small and for most people would be hidden under your hand while using the brush. The sound does change but Oral B tend to have a flashing light that will not be concealed. I find that the brush does not fit quite properly. There is a small gap between the brush and the handle even if pushed on firmly - at this price I think that is poor. As yet Amazon don't seem to have the proper replacement brushes for this model and. in general, Sonicare brushes tend to be quite pricey - time will tell.So all in all - an excellent toothbrush in terms of cleaning however I simply don't see how the current price can be justified.

I have been using the Philips sonicare 5100 for a little while now. Initially when I received the toothbrush through the post I was excited, the product looked high tech, excellent quality and easy to use. It comes with a handy travel storage and two toothbrush heads plus the charger lead and instructions. It is compact, clean looking, sleek and stylish! Would sit well in anyone’s bathroom. The set up was easy and I was ready to go within a couple of minutes. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first used the toothbrush so I went for the default settings initially. I have to say, I did not think I would be as impressed as I was, the toothbrush is powerful and intense but still very comfortable to use, probably down to the built in pressure sensor which stops the toothbrush if you are pressing too firmly, a feature I am most impressed with. Having this feature means I have actually changed the way I brush completely, previously I was brushing too hard and probably causing damage! Thanks to the sonicare I will avoid this in the future.Afterwards my teeth felt sparkling clean, The cleanest they have ever felt after brushing! I have some staining on my teeth due to having lingual braces fitted and my teeth moving, this has markedly improved in just the short time I have been using it, particularly using the ‘white’ setting on the toothbrush. I am confident going forward this will only continue to get better using this toothbrush. The toothbrush itself sits well in the hand when using and despite being so powerful does not cause any discomfort in the hands when in use. It is however, quite loud! Not so much that it would wake my small children but just a noticeable noise when in use, noted mainly by my partner in the bedroom next door to the bathroom. The shape of the toothbrush head fits perfectly around the teeth to enable you to clean the gums really well and get every angle around the teeth, this definitely contributed to the sparkling clean feel I experienced. My breath has stayed fresher for longer after using the toothbrush and it’s safe to say I am a Philips Sonicare convert, il never look back now!Overall the product is well made, easy to use, excellent quality, stylish and ticks all the boxes on oral hygiene, whitening aid and gum health. I have used Philips Electric toothbrushes for at least twenty years, and like them much better than their competitors mainly because they seem to be well made and have a good life. quite important when you are spending quite a lot of money on them. I always say they are much cheaper than a dentist. Despite having quite of lot of work done on my teeth because of gum disease thirty years ago, I am hanging onto all my teeth into my seventies even though one has been unsteady for about thirty years. So I believe in dental hygiene!.This brush came with two heads and a charger and a travel case. A good idea though to be frank I rarely use it when I travel. The charger is the normal two pin thing,so you will need an adapter which i expect you have if you want to charge out of the bathroom. this brush has three modes, clean white and gum care, easily selectable by the use of one of the two press button controls. when you pick the brush up, it will indicate which mode it was last in by lighting up a little but bright led. The battery condition is indicated by another led which is steady blinks at you or blinks amber depending on the charge. A nice feature of this brush is that you can activate various features by placing on the charger and holding down the power on/off button. the features are Easy start (a build up to full power if you are not used to an electric tooth brush) Brush head replacement reminder, and pressure sensor. I would personally have the pressure sensor on all the time. The temptation with any cleaning regime is to be too vigorous as this is not a good idea for the tooth surface. This head is quite vigorous so you do not have to do much work to get a good result!. But quite frankly, you do not need to bother with any of that stuff if you do not want to, and the brush works well out of the box. I am using mine with an ordinary head rather than the "tell me when I need replacing " head and it works fine.Whats not to like? possibly the price, though you can always get deals on these brushes- and Philips does last- I have had one of their radios for over thirty years! You will not keep the brush that long as the rechargeable battery will likely die- but they do last- they seem to die quite slowly. Nice thing about this brush is that it has a 14 day batter, so you are not forever charging.

This is a great toothbrush, but it does have a few negatives amongst a lot of positives. Pros - It was much smaller and lighter than my previous electric toothbrush, and also seems much more powerful. I think this has automatically lead to me applying less pressure when brushing, yet I still get a really thorough clean. I’ll admit I haven’t looked after my teeth well in the past and usually experience some bleeding and plaque build-up, but I haven’t had any bleeding when using this brush, and I can see less plaque behind my front teeth especially, which is where it builds up most. The head is much smaller than I’m used to so I’m using less toothpaste, and it’s easier to move around my mouth.Unlike my previous toothbrush, you can’t switch between the modes - regular, whitening and gum care - once it’s switched on which I originally thought was a pain, but actually it’s much easier as it remembers your previous setting so you don’t have to select it each time you switch it on. I have had it for nearly 2 weeks now and it’s shown no signs of needing to be charged, so the battery clearly lasts a long time. The charger is also very small and light, handy for travel. I can’t comment on the alert for changing the head as I haven’t needed that either yet! Cons - It buzzes every 30 seconds to alert you to change the quadrant you’re brushing, but I found this alert very very subtle compared to my previous toothbrush, so much so that I often nearly miss it. Equally the alert to tell you that you’re applying too much pressure is very subtle, and the light for this is tiny and right at the bottom of the handle so you can’t see it when brushing. The box only contained one of the three styles of heads - gum care - it would have been nice to get one of each to try. The main negative is the price though - I honestly don’t think it justifies its hefty price tag and I expect the replacement heads, being ‘smart’, will be equally overpriced. One thing to note is that there is a gap between the head and handle - the instructions explain this is normal and you don’t notice it after use - but I would think this would bother some people as it looks like it’s not fitted properly. Ever since I was given a Sonicare to trial a few years ago, it has been our number one toothbrush of choice in our home and I have gone on to buy a further two more for myself and my Husband since that initial trial. The last Sonicare that I bought was just over two years ago and whilst I can confirm that it is still working perfectly, it does seem to take a little longer to charge and doesn't always last a very long time between charges now but it has lasted more than the 2 year warranty period. As with the other Sonicare toothbrushes we have had over the last few years, this one does leave your mouth feeling fresh and your teeth feeling super clean in comparison to a manual toothbrush. There are three cleaning options which can be selected with the second button on the handset; gum care, white and clean and you will need to attach the toothbrush head which arrives separate to the main body. The toothbrush I received did need charging on arrival and it does come with a charger lead which has the usual 2 pin plug so you will need a 2 pin to 3 pin adapter plug if you haven't got one already. The brush comes with two toothbrush heads labeled W and G2 and apparently these are recommended to be used in the White mode or Gum Care modes according to the instruction manual with a further toothbrush head labeled C2 to be bought separately for the Clean mode. The main difference with this new toothbrush is the new pressure sensor and brushsync reminder to let you know when the brush head needs changing but other than this the Sonicare is similar to previous versions with the usual quadpacer and smartimer functions to let you know when to move to a different quadrant when brushing your teeth. Finally it does also come with a plastic travel case for carrying your toothbrush if you travel away from home and whilst this is a nice touch, I much prefer the USB charging case that comes with the more expensive Diamondcare brush (my older brush) and so I shall be using the older case on my travels in the future. As usual from Philips a great brush with a wonderful clean and from a name and brand I have bought from and trust.

I was really happy to be accepted to trial this toothbrush and waited for it to arrive with excitement. How can you be excited over a toothbrush? This really excited me.My box arrived and upon opening it I was pleased to see I had been assigned a turquoise unit, my favourite colour!! I would’ve been happy with any colour really. The packaging was compact, instructions concise and I was really impressed with the travel case also. I have learnt quite a lot after receiving this toothbrush and trialling it.I thought I brushed my teeth normally and for a standard length of time. How wrong was I? I now know that what I thought was right, isn’t!!So, let’s start with the toothpaste, I always put a nice blob on my brush. Not needed, only a seed needed! What a difference too. My mouth doesn’t foam and it isn’t on fire!I have always brushed my teeth for what I thought a reasonable time, haha, I’m amazed how long 2 and a half to 3 minutes actually is when brushing!! I can’t believe how long that is, so not only have I been using to much toothpaste, I haven’t been brushing for long enough. The two heads I recieved are Whitening and Gum Care. I have always had bleeding gums so tried that head first, very thorough, yet very soft feeling. Wonderful clean feeling to the tooth itself. I then tried the whitening head and love this head. Not once since using have my gums bled, but I have also learnt that for the past years I have been pressing way to hard. Now I feel I am more thorough, concise and less harsh on my gums and teeth. I don’t press as hard and it is a difference. My son has asked if I’ve changed my toothpaste as my teeth are whiter - result! He also wants to use the brush for better results himself. As a result we are now researching where to purchase additional heads from, not just for me, but for the whole family and will continue to use this toothbrush and recommend it to others.Thank you for choosing me, I have enjoyed and appreciated this test. Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes, have well and truly raised the bar of what to expect from an electric toothbrush. Philips innovations have taken oral hygiene to an unprecedented level, leaving competitors in their wake.First of all, I absolutely love the feel of the toothbrush, it has a nice matte coating that has a really elegant feel to it. Ok, this is completely aesthetic, the real quality is no doubt performance, but Sonicare 5100 is no slouch there either. The toothbrush has 3 settings, with a gum protection mode that alerts the user of they are brushing too hard on my gums. Whilst this is becoming a fairly standard feature on most higher end toothbrushes these days, the 5100 has a few more up its sleeve that sets it apart from the rest. What I love most about this brush is that it measures usage. You are supposed to replace your head around very 3 months or so, but its easy to forget when you last replaced your head, so by measuring usage this clever brush alerts when to change your head. A really innovation.I also really love the charging case. Taking your brush abroad can be problematic as not all bathrooms across the world has the 2 pin electric fitting. Fear not, this brush has its charging case, not only does it keep your brush and head nice and safe, it can be plugged into a USB charger to charge the brush whilst it is stored in its case.It is easy to get carried away with the techie features, but after using it now for around 3 weeks, I have been really impressed with how good my teeth are looking these, so much so I have now thrown my old charger out.Whilst this version is the top of the tree in terms of pricing, there is absolutely no doubt about the genuine quality this brush has, and if you are serious about oral hygiene then you can't put a price on having clean white teeth.Highly recomended.

I DO LIKE THIS==========================I have to admit that I've been a user of the Oral-B range of toothbrushes for years. So in trying this I was always going to compare the Oral B with the Sonicare. This is a top of the range one and I think it's simply fantastic. The brushes are more akin to the shape of a traditional toothbrush. After cleaning for two minutes your teeth just feel- wow clean. That said, it does have some features that I'll never use: the lower intensity setting. (Although if you have sensitive gums or have had crown work they may be features you'll use.)I really like this one as it's fast enough, light enough and holds a charge for three weeks.(So you can take it on holiday.)CHARGER=======It comes with the charging base. It also comes with a useful travel case.TRAVEL======As it holds a charge for 3 weeks it's more transportable or holiday friendly than the oral B range.CLEAN TEETH===========I have had squeaky clean teeth after two minutes using this toothbrush. I've also had the much more expensive Oral B toothbrushes and also tried the cheaper ones. This is much better than the cheaper ones. (They're a little slower) and the more expensive ones have a few more bells and whistles that you''ll never use. Overall this is ideal for most people.I think in terms of cleaning the Oral B and this are equal. But in terms of travel, this wins.PROS=====It did make a difference to my brushing technique and now my teeth now feel much cleaner.Reminder to change headsQuite quietSeems to be an improvement over my old SonicareCONS=====The head leaves a tiny gap between the brush head and the main unit. I'd like it aligned.Only one head in the boxRECOMMENDED===========If you're after an electric toothbrush that's beautiful, light and does a good job this is certainly one to consider.
