You probably fall into 1 of 3 groups here:1) "I've never played Patapon" - Go and play the original Patapon, it will be a cheaper way to see if this is your kind of game.2) "I played the original game and hated it" - Move along, there's nothing for you here.3) "I played the original and loved it" - Welcome back, buy this game and be happy!I have just completed Patapon 2 after playing it solidly for a month. Just like the original game, it is an addictive and simple game where you command your gang of Patapons using drum beats. Some things have changed, there are some new types of patapon and some more mini-games, but it is essentially the same game as the original. A good change is that you never lose a patapon,in the original if one of your gang was eaten or you failed to pick up the cap, that patapon was lost. This doesnt happen in Patapon 2 which makes for a less stressful game. However, I would like to expand on my one gripe about Patapon 1 and 2, and that is the repetitive nature of the game. To proceed through the game you need to level up your patapons by collecting materials and better weapons, but to do so you need to repeat the same missions again and again and AGAIN until you are powerful enough to complete the mission you are stuck on. The process then repeats itself. It is satisfying when you create better patapons and pick up a sweet weapon, but having to grind your way through missions you have already completed can be frustrating. That said, I couldn't stop playing it and drove everyone in earshot mad.

Patapon 2 follows directly from the previous game in both story and gameplay, which is fine because the gameplay in the first title was revolutionary at the time. As you might expect, Patapon 2 doesn't bring the same kind of innovation to the table, but does mix up the formula a little bit.Firstly, the introduction of a hero unit - which always goes with you on missions and has its own special slot - can change the face of battle fairly dramatically. Depending on the class chosen for the hero at the start of battle, it can often mean the difference between success and failure. This aspect existed to some extent in the first Patapon, where choosing the right units for the mission could have an impact, but not to such a great extent I feel. Ultimately, only a few of the hero classes felt useful and I ended up just sticking with those. The changes to Patapon evolution and levelling will certainly give the game much more longevity than before, and allows for individual Patapons to grow in strength, rather than having to kill them off in favour of other Rarepons. There's enough new here to interest fans of the game, but as a singleplayer package, I think I would still recommend the first game be played first. The atmosphere of tribal warfare with cute little characters seemed to be better realised in the first Patapon. That's not to say it doesn't exist here, it just exists in a much more watered-down form. Between this and the better translation job in the first game, it's clear why this was download only in other regions.

Patapon 2 is the best reason to have a PSP. It's a 2D strategy-action game in which you command a small, customisable army of creatures called Patapons, who come in a myriad shapes and sizes, and who must fight off dragons, giant spiders, and woolly mammoths in order to reach Earths End. It is genuinely eccentric and completely brilliant.First, negatives: you have to be willing to replay missions over and over in order to progress. The game is designed this way - a level 1 dragon is just the beginning, you have to get to level 5 or 6 for the collectables you really need to build your army, and level 20 and beyond until he drops the crazy sword of death that you've been hunting. However, this is mitigated by the fact that you are effectively testing out your new, stronger army with each new battle, and experimenting with different units in order to find out the best strategy to win quick and clean. Some players found it a grind - I didn't.Personally, I didn't have any other problems with it.Positives: It has a highly individual and charming graphic style which is always fun to watch, hysterical sound design, and simple, addictive, rewarding gameplay. The learning curve is steeper than average, but once you get it, there's no going back. I put about 40 hours into it to finish the game and level up a (fairly) serious Patapon army, and I'm still going back to it. In short, it's keeping me away from some serious AAA PS3 and X360 titles that are all gathering dust. Ah well.

Yep!! The French-Japanese alliance have done it again. This is a sequel to the hit game Patapon (Well with a name like Patapon 2, it wasn't likely to be anything to do with Final Fantasy was it :-)) To those of you who hated the graphics, bad luck, the Graphics are as weird as ever, courtesy of Rolito. The Gameplay has been improved slightly, although I must say that apart from a couple of minor changes, the Gameplay in Patapon 2 is much the same as Patapon, but then the Japanese were rather clever in that they remembered the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Again the game could last you for weeks. And of course it is endlessly replayable.Of course the bad thing about this game is the same as the original Patapon in that you'll have the tunes going around your head for weeks. In fact it's affected me to such an affect that whenever I'm walking I get the movement song "PATA PATA PATA PON" going through my head. All in all though - Five Stars.
