I'll start with the summary first, and that is that this is the finest sports game I've ever played on any format. Prior to purchasing this game I had a slight interest in hockey and had enjoyed one of the very old versions on the Sega Megadrive. After reading the dismal reviews of Pro Evo Soccer I decided to re-acquaint myself with the NHL series for a fix of fast-paced sporting action and was stunned at the quality.The game offers the player to take control of international and club hockey teams in a variety of competitions although the real bulk of the game involves the NHL and the chance to win the coveted Stanley Cup. The controls will take a while to learn but are less complex than the likes of Pro Evo Soccer.This can also be counted by selecting a more simple control set and even has the "classic" 15 year old Megadrive commands that a 7 year old could happily use. Infact the game offers a myriad of options that allows the player to tweak a particular facet of play to his/her satisfaction; from the obvious areas such as difficulty and camera view; to the technical such as poke-check success and penalty level.The real feather in the cap (or mask) of this title is the addictive Be-a-Pro mode where the player can create a rookie character and embark with them on a career initially in the AHL and, with good individual and team play, hopefully move on up to the NHL and the chance for real glory. This method of play really gives you the sense of positional responsibility and an appreciation of the tactical subtleties of hockey. Your character earns experience as he goes and its possible with time he'll turn from a promising rookie into a full-blown NHL superstar with the abilities to match. Be-a-Pro is highly addictive and delivers superior levels of satisfaction time after time whether its checking an onrushing forward into the boards or scoring a slap-shot game winning goal from the blue-line with seconds remaining.Because of this game I've moved from a mere passing admiration of hockey to actively following the NHL on a daily basis. It's a fantastic sport and I'd strongly recommend anyone to make this purchase and enjoy it for themselves.

This is a fantastic ice hockey game! I've been a fan of the game since seeing the Maple Leafs beat Buffalo in Toronto some years ago but this is the first ice hockey game I've played and I was very impressed - it really captures the essence of this excitingly fast sport! EA have really polished this game the graphics are exellent the players look great and move realistically just watch the nice little touches such as the spray of ice as players put the brakes on! The gameplay is top notch and the whole game night feeling comes across very strongly when the music plays and the teams come out onto the ice under the spotlights! I must admit I was worried that the controls may be difficult to pick up but it's not at all after a few games!I also love the unpredictability of the results for example you can thrash NY Rangers 6-1 one game and the next you can lose to Ottawa Senators 2-0 but winning every game by a big margin and having it all your own way would be boring! The sound effects are exellent such as the thud from the hits, the ping off the goal pipes, the scrape of the skates on the ice and the twang of the puck as it hits the glass! The only thing I am not that keen on is the fighting which although part of the game it somehow just does'nt feel right - maybe I will get used to it in time! Overall this is a very addictive game that has a top quality feel about it with lots of different modes to try with all the licenses to top it all off! I recommend this game to NHL fans and anyone who wants to "feel" what this great sport is like! GO NHL 09!!!

I have always loved Ice hockey games. the last one I owned was NHL202 on PS2.I wanted to revisit the genre now that i've finally got sorted with a next gen console.as ever, the atmosphere, commentary, soundtrack and sound effects are absolutely spot on and really draw you into the game.the controls are excellent, intuitive and responsive. there are a lot of buttons to memorise but it soon becomes second nature.Scoring regularly on the other hand is a skill which I fear will elude me for some time.opening up opportunities is the key, taking them is easier said than done.I also find defending pretty tricky, it seems that sometimes, the game decides that you will not be able to stop the attack andf that the opposition IS going to score.usually by pulling off a series of ridiculously quick passes that are not possible.the amount of games I have lost 3-4, 2-3 or 1-2 after being ahead most of the game is really starting to rub me up the wrong way.I've had games where I've out shot the opposition up wards of 30 shots against 12 and still lost 1-4 or 1-5. It beggars belief!!!The important part tho' is that I am continuing to play. I know that it's a case of practice makes perfect. The tools are there, I just have to work out how to use them properly.This is an infuriatingly excellent game. It's a long time since i've had this sort of game that genuinely threatens the livelyhood of my joypad!

having played the series since it's second instalment and then having purchased most since, I think I am able to say that this is the best NHL game to date.the Be A Pro mode is great fun (even the netminding)the defensive skillstick really comes into it's own (especially for me because I always play as a D because it is my position on the literal rink as well as the virtual one)takes a while to get used to (mainly) using just the 2 analog sticks and the shoulder buttons but when you get it,its a real joygreat game, shame I can never find anyone to play online (I guess we are in the wrong timezone here in the UK to play most of the people that own the game)great game,a must buy for any NHL fan

I bought this game yesterday as i am a huge NHL fan. I downloaded the demo from the playstation website and wasn't very impressed but hoped the real thing would be better. And i was very happy indeed. The game has been made much more realisitc and harder. the controls take a while to get used to and are hard to master but once you get the hang of it you can't put your controller down. The 'Be A Pro' game mode is such an awesome idea; incase you havn't heard you make your own character and play just as him, not as the whole team. Awesome game. If you have downloaded the demo don't let it put you off, the real game is 100 times better!!

Having never played a hockey game before, I decided I'd give this a go based on a couple of friend's reviews. As soon as the intro scene loads up you know it's going to be worth the investment. The controls are seamless, the commentary amusing-if cheesy-as one would expect and the graphics are mind blowing. Chuck in fast paced frenetic gameplay, wi a coupla simple brawls for good measure, and this is one of the best sports games I've played in a long while-I even had to put Fifa on the back burner to gi it a go.

this game is fantastic, ive written a load of reviews today and need to finish so i wont elaborate too much, just say its very easy to get into, very easy to get lost in and the immersion factor is immense. just get it, if youre looking, youre interested, you should get it. OUTRAGEOUSLY fast!

I don't no much about nhl these days,but this is a gr8 ice hockey game, season mode baffles me a bit, but for those in the no, it's all here and very well done. gr8 graphics and gameplay.If fifa did'nt exist maybe i'd have more time for it.

Without a doubt one of the best sports games to be released in years. Amazing skill stick control and the A.I of the computer teams is realistic and challenging. 10/10!

great game with excellent graphics be a pro mode good but a bit too easy could be more realistic on the whole worth the money
