The unit is very well constructed and has a nice solid feel to it. Its USP is the fact that it has a balanced input, which is especially useful for moving coil cartridges, as it ensures minimum noise pickup. The balanced connection is via a mini XLR socket which is a bit restrictive on the choice of interconnects that can be used, but not insurmountable and definitely not a show stopper. The preamplifier is powered by a remote 12V power source which helps to reduce the risk of hum pickup or other interference. There is an alternative low noise power supply available which might improve the performance, but so far the original power source seems OK.Although I have yet to connect up the cartridge to the balanced pickup, doing this seems absolutely fin, and I'm pleased with the quality of the music I'm hearing is first class.

The step from Vincent PHO-8 to Musical Fidelity MX-VYNL was a significant upgrade in my system consisting of Rega Planar 6/Dynavector 10x5 Mk2, Hegel Röst and Monitor Audio 300 Gold. The sound got more attack, clarity and extension. The soundstage became more open with the sound coming loose from the loudspeakers. At the same time the sound is natural and refined, full of life. Before buying MX-VYNL I compared it to Avid Pellar and Rega Aria. I definitely preferred MX-VYNL to both. The more laid back character of the MX-VYNL compared to Aria is so much more pleasant for long listening sessions. MX-VYNL was more coherent than Avid Pellar.Pellar was hard and somewhat harsh in comparison.Highly recommended.

I am not techy so could someone enlighten me?In 40 years of messing around with hi fi I have not seen a turntable with an XLR (balanced) connection. Also it is a single mini XLR which puzzles me even further.OK - balanced may help with moving coil cartridges (see above review) but why has Musical Fidelity gone for balanced connection when it seems so rare with turntables, in my experience anyway? Any user would have to try and get a new lead fitted to their turntable. Can a dealer fit a mini XLR connection to my turntable? Do Musical Fidelity expect their customers to seek that?
