I purchased a new Samsung UE40C6000 LED Television in the January sales this year and although the similar LCD TVs had left and right stereo audio/phono already, I wanted the super slim, back-lit LED screen. Unfortunately, this only had an optical out and I had an older Denon amp that I had recently purchased from a friend. The amplifier did not have an optical in. I researched about these converters beforehand so I knew had had a cheaper option than buying a new amp. The Currys manager claimed these didn't exist. But more to the point, Currys just don't stock them!Upon set up, I connected the sound using phono leads directly from the Sky Plus box to the amp. Unfortunately, this suffered audio delays on certain channels. This can be modified in the set up on the Sky Plus box however there were significant delays when replaying recorded programs which was difficult to correct. I decided to buy one of these. It is very light weight and slightly cheap feeling but the packaging was professional. The unit can be manually switched between coaxial and optical and is supplied with a European/UK travel type plug. The only negatives (and hence the 4 stars) are the price and the fact then when the unit is switched on, it emits a high pitched whine in a quiet room. However, this is soon masked, even with the amp at low volume. The TV audio did need adjusting to sync lips to sound, but this was far superior to the adjustments made on the Sky Plus box. I'd recommend this product at this moment in time. I've had it a few days. We'll see if it lasts...Update: Product is still going well. The high pitched sound seems to die off after being on for a while however my father popped round and said he couldn't hear a thing. He's not deaf but it is common place for higher frequencies not being heard the older you get.Update 17/04/16: Product still going strong 6 years on and used regularly. Can't hear the sound now either.

If like many people, you still have a conventional (analogue) audio amplifier, opposed to modern equipment, such as Sky's Q boxes and most flat screen TV's which only have an Optical audio output. Very few analogue audio amps have an optical input, so you have to convert the signal from digital to analogue using devices like this DAC.This particular model has a sampling rate of up to 192 kHz which is far better than the 48 kHz sampling rate offered by the Sky Q box and many DVD and Blu Ray players. So all you need is this small device, (which is supplied with a 3 pin adaptor plug to step down the mains to 5 Volts) plus a TOSlink fibre cable and a twin (L&R)coaxial/phono plugged cable to connect everything together. It's very easy to set up. There's a small switch on the DAC to select either Optical or Coaxial input (you can't select both) and a red LED to show which one is selected. If you are connecting to a Sky Q box, then select Optical input and connect the output coaxial/phono plugs into your amplifier Auxiliary input.Result - fantastic stereo sound (I used a pair of bass-reflex bookshelf speakers) instead of the usual awfully tinny sound produced by nearly all flat screen TV internal speakers.Fair enough, you don't get Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 output but for most programs these days, a good beefy stereo sound is more than adequate, and costs a fraction of what you would pay for a Soundbar or a new amp with an optical input. Thoroughly recommended!Read full review...

I was searching for a way to use my Bose surround sound setup with my new Samsung plasma tv, as a lot of new TV sets are not coming equipped with analog left and right channel outputs, this has been replaced or superseded with a coaxial/optical out.Only trouble is most old amps don't have this time of connection, so this product does exactly what it says on the tin.The product came in hard wrapped plastic and was quickly free with a pair scissors. In the three steps I was up and running.1.plug in the pre-supplied adapter in to the mains and connect to the converter.2.plug in RCA audio cables from your amp source to the converter.3.plug your coaxial/optical cable to from the TV to the optical input on the converter.Job done. The sound is rich and and full and none of the signal is lost,I have turned my system up pretty loud with no audible distortion.Build quailty is very good and the unit is small enough to hide away at the back of the TV or in a cabinet.I would recommend this product to anyone in need of using there external speakers with a new tv set or other application.

I bought this because my Sky HD box had lost its left hand audio channel so I needed to feed its optical output to the hifi amp in the lounge (this is my second replacement HD box - has there *ever* been a worse home entertainment product made?)This little DAC certainly works (I haven't tried the coax feed) although the output level is quite low compared with most other audio devices, so I've knocked off one star for that. Quality wise, it is acceptable. You can't expect miraculous performance for something this cheap. It is also very small and neat and worked first time. I don't have any hum as mentioned by one reviewer; it is silent in operation. As I've switched my two HD boxes around (original problem solved)it now converts the optical output from my Macbook Pro to the hifi amp in my study. For the money, I don't believe there is anything on the market to touch this. Highly recommended.

I wanted to connect my LCD TV to my existing Stereo system, but the TV only had an optical audio output. So, I bought this AU-D3 converterwell, talk about plug & play,Couldn't be easier to connect.Optical cable from TV to Converter (cheapest I could find)Connect Phono plugs from stereo (cable was already in place from my DVD player, but I wanted sound from all TV programs, not just DVDs)Connect the little mains power adaptor that comes with it,Switch it all on & that's it, works perfectlySo small it's easy to tuck out of the wayI'd love to see these converters a bit cheaper, but they all seem to be roughly the same priceAll in all5/5 for ease of use & function5/5 for quality4/5 for priceThe only criticism (if I can find one)is that it would have been nice to have a fixing screw hole somewhere, but some double-sided sticky tape seems to do just as well

I bought a new TV without considering audio outputs. So I found, when it arrived, that the remote headphones I had been using didn't work.I had a problem - these are headphones for the hard of hearing and necessarily used most daysSo I was delighted to find the device which I could plug into the digital audio out and which would take the red and white plugs from the headphones. The only slight downside was that the output is so high that the headphones had to be set on their lowest setting and were still a bit loud even for me. The headphone supplier provided a solution - a free inline attenuator which reduced the level to perfection.

I just needed some method to convert the optical output of my bedroom TV to phono inputs on my mini hifi to get a better sound and this does it perfectly. Sounds good, takes up little space, does what it says on the tin. What more could you want?

This was purchased to converts digital audio from an LED tv to an analogue amplifier as an upgrade to the internal tv speakers. The sound quality is excellent and no delay between whats said on screen to that heard through the amp and speakers.

7.7.2011

Does what it says. Very small, very good.Should come with a velcro sticker to fix it to discretely fix to back of TV. Why does every damn add-on need a heavy weight 13A power supply and another ********** 13A outlet?

I stupidly bought a TV with only 'digital' audio output connection. (Just try finding an amplifier/speaker system that accepts such a signal) This gadget saved me, and recreates standard right/left line signals.

i used it for years and it's still working fine. an awesome tool! essential to use new lcd tv with old hi fi that still works great

21.5.2015

solved the problem as the blue ray player I had just bought had a coaxial out put but my amp didn't.excellent bit of kit.

17.6.2015

For the price an excellent DAC. Quality good cf an expensive DAC but does seem to attenuate the digital OP a bit.

10.1.2014

neat, tidy, does what i bought it for. frustratingly seen at a lower price days after i bought it. hey ho.
