Metal Arms has all the hallmarks of a children's game:Comic-book robots, colourful maps, and an easy-to-follow story to give the action some purpose. All this and the game's presentation and packaging suggest that Metal Arms is a children's game, but it is in fact a first rate shooter with a cohesive and compelling story and plenty of variety.Graphics:Despite the cartoon-like format the graphics are excellent. As you'd expect with an Xbox game, the maps are mostly huge and well-composed. The maps are generally solid, with very few triangulation errors or glitches (no pun intended!) There is no distance fog, which a good thing, but not so good is the lack of distance fading - the fading of all colours as they become further away, until they become grey at the horizon. Nevertheless this is a minor issue that, curiously enough, seems to work well in this cartoon-like environment. Frame rates are high at all time, with only slight tearing when a very busy view is moved around. Characters are all well-rendered and characterization is superb. However, the limbs of some of the larger robots can be somewhat detached at times.Sound:As this is a shooter, the sounds of battle are an important factor in creating excitement and realism. Metal Arms succeeds admirably in this regard, providing reassuringly gutsy blasts for every type of weapon, and convincing explosions too. All robots have voices, which they use to encourage or warn you as you play, such as alerting you when a grenade has landed nearby. No custom soundtrack is available, which leaves you at the mercy of the in-game music. While the music is not bad, it is not especially good either.Gameplay:Metal Arms offers us a standard shooter, but one that is implemented with freshness, originality, and creative flare. Running around beautifully realised maps, dispatching delightfully rendered foes, never gets tiring. Watching the robots amble about on their legs is almost like watching a baby toddling, but these babies carry guns and granedes are often intent on destroying you.Metal Arms implements a set of simple controls that are so responsive they give you tremendous confidence in play. For example, the reticle moves very smoothly and accurately, allowing you to target your enemies with ease. Metal Arms is infectious from the start, and it never lets up for a second. On the down-side, the harder levels of difficulty are simply far too hard. On most levels you can expect to be pulverized immediately by enemies that never miss. The game also lacks a save-game facility, and with some of the harder levels (on harder difficulty) taking over an hour to complete, the prospect of having to abandon all your hard work and start again is annoying to say the least.

This game really is excellent for the money I paid for it. It is similar to Halo, with some platforming sections. The game has plenty of longevity, and isn't overly easy like a lot of games today. Multiplayer is also very good, with the ability to control other robots with the tether gun adding some innovation to the action. You will have seen a lot of it before, but it's still great fun.
