This was only released on Friday 15th February so I don't know where the previous reviewers got their copies from. Anyway, brilliant game. I've been playing for most of the week-end so have got through quite a few levels, hopefully there are a lot more to come. I hadn't thought about the linearity of the levels until I read the reviews below. To be honest, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Wandering around large levels trying to work out what to do next can be tedious - but it does not happen in this game. For me it is a lot more entertaining than Return to Castle Wolfenstein even though that was a good game. In this, the final version, it does not start with the Omaha Beach level. This is sensible as Omaha beach would be a fairly tough start. There is a fairly short training level and a couple of missions before you get to D-Day. Omaha beach really is just like in Saving Private Ryan. Quite often the music reminds you of it and sometimes when you see bombed out houses. The sound in the game is worth a special mention as the effects and the music are top class and really add to the atmosphere. Perhaps if you analyse the game it may seem heavily scripted. But admire it for what it is. Having allied planes flying over blowing the front off a building as you walk up a street is not going to happen unless it has been designed in. You get to drive a tank and blow up every building in sight in a couple of levels. As for AI, as a game designer said recently, if the AI was that realistic you wouldn't last more than a few seconds. I have to make frequent quick-saves because I die fairly frequently, so it is difficult enough. On the downside, quite a few crashes, and on my machine every time I load a saved game from scratch (i.e. for the first time having started the program) it tries to dial up (which I cancel) and then the display flickers in wierd colours. Once loaded I have to hit the "my computer" button on my MS Internet keyboard then go back (otherwise the mouse does not work!) to change the video settings. Having changed the video settings everything is OK and I can go back to the setting I had before. Once you get through this the game runs smoothly but sometimes you encounter a crash where the only way out is the reboot button. (System: Windows 98, Epox 8HKA+, 256mb DDR, AMD XP 1600+, Radeon 7500).The problems are not enough to lose the 5-star rating and, to be fair, most games give me problems at some point.Overall it is the best first person shooter so far .... probably.

I've been playing pc games (especially fps's) for some time and I can honestly say that nothing comes close to the sheer quality of this game.If you've played half life and thought that was tense, emmersive and exciting you ain't seen nothing yet. On a high end system the power of the quake3 engine used for the graphics will blow you away. The sun blinds you when you look up at it, trees gently sway in the wind and grass and dirt debris fly up all around whilst you crouch in a trench with bullits whizzing passed your ears. This bring me on to the sound. The ambient score compliments the action perfectly and as is now the norm in fps's the music changes depending on whats happenning. If you are lucky enough to own a 5.1 surround system then playing the notoriously tricky omaha beach landing level is like being in the centre of Saving Private Ryan. You can hear your team mates shouting orders and coordinating attacks by themselves. They'll lay down cover fire for you and heal you (if they're a medic). The A.I is simply superb. Enemy soldiers push over tables to crouch behind. If you lob a grenade they'll pick it up and throw it back. The death animations are sickeningly realistic. They'll lie, partially injured on the floor crawling away untill your fire a few more rounds into their backs, making them crash on the ground with a thud. Of course, enemys are zoned so a shot to the head takes them out quicker than a shot to the leg.People complain that there is no blood in the game, but I think that the lack of blood doesn't take the realism away. If it was like Soldier of Fortune than too much gore (along with the crude death animations)would just make you sick.My one quibble is that in some of the vast outdoor sections, it can be hard to tell where the shooting is coming from and especially annoying when you keep getting hit repeatedly by the mystery marksman. Also it would've been nice if "lean"(for peaking around walls) keys were added to the single player game. For some reason the developers have limmited them to the multiplayer part of the game. Cerrrraaaazzzy in my opinion.Apart from this minor issues if you have to buy one WW2 fps game this year, don't buy Wolfenstein, buy this - you won't regret it.

As a newcomer to PC gaming (and FPShooters) I was keen to warm up to it all with a decent game - and, frankly, I can't believe they can come any better than this. This is a top-notch, first rate gaming experience. The graphics are incredibly smoothe and realistic. The characters, weapons, scenery and buildings are presented beautifully. The sound is even more incredible; the gun shots, explosions, ambience, make you feel even more like you're there. Add the music (which is an excellent complimentary score) and the vocal talent, and you have yourself a blockbuster movie. There are so many things here that contribute to the high standard of presentation. As for the gameplay, this is well balanced. The easy, user-friendly interface means you can't go wrong. The levels are nice to roam about in but perhaps the compass guide makes things too 'straight-forward' at times. The learning curve is just right, and as the missions go on you are encouraged to use different strategies. This isn't a gung-ho shoot-fest; you must execute patience and precision at times, rather than shooting off clip after clip. It would be dull if this were the case. The Omaha beach mission is a major highlight (and one to come back to again and again for the sheer thrill of it), although it did seem a little early on in the game. As epic as it was it probably deserved to be something looked forward to and conquered later on. The U-boat level is nice change of pace (having the Nazi soldiers bidding you 'Gutten tag' and what not when you're dressed as an Officer), and a good example of how each level differs while keeping you hooked and on-edge. You're gonna have to re-play missions until you learn how to best handle them. And whether it's storming beaches, riding on the back of a jeep with a machine gun, blasting buildings in a King Tiger tank, sneaking down railway tracks and picking off snipers from a distance, you're gonna be doing them again and again. It is a shame the game ends so abruptly, but still MOH: Allied Assault draws you in, keeps you hooked, is so realistic it makes you care for your comrades and really feel triumphant at the end of each mission. Excellent.

this has to be the most realistic game i have ever played, The recreation of world war 2 is both brilliant and shocking, Brilliant in the way every weapon or uniform is extremely detailed and the levels are so atmospheric that you fall so deep into the gameplay that you can easily lose 4 or 5 hours just trying to complete a couple of stages. The main level im sure every one will be talking about is the omaha level, this has to be the closest any of us will get to actually storming the beaches of Normandy. Let me describe a bit of it. You start the level aproachingthe beach in the higgins boat there are about 5 of you in there and you can hear the explosions in the distance. As you get closer the boat a couple of yards over from you gets hit, the guy next to you is praying he will survive this onslaught and then the whistle blows preparing every one to get ready to charge. As the door slams down the first row of people are mowed down before they even get of the boat and you rush for the nearest wooden stack just to survive the first two yards, then all you can see through the hail of bullets are the allies rushing and dying in front you and as your jaw drops at the amazing recreation of the omaha landings you also feel a bit saddened because it reminds you of what the real life soldiers must have gone through thats how realistic it is.The graphics are great especially if you got the machine to handle the full spec, And the AI is great tooAnother great part of the game is the multiplayer.Yes it has your average deathmatch and teammatch but it also has an objective match where you and about twenty others can choose between allies or axis and you either have to blow a bridge or a flak gun or you have to defend them either way it is much better than just shooting people.Right i think i've said enough, oh by the way this is a MUST bye for anyone even if you dont like first person shooters.BYE IT NOW.

June, 1944. D-Day. Lt. Mike Powell (that's you) is set to be one of the first allied soldiers to spill onto the beaches of Northern France in the largest combined military operation in history. This is the allied assault.Graphically this game is very good, being powered by the Quake 3 engine, though you will need a fairly high-end machine to be able to take advantage of this. There are a few problems, most noticeably the pixelated hedges, but these are not severe. Sound is spot on, and the atmosphere is, well, highly atmospheric. You really do feel like you're in Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers.Level design however is very uneven. The best level without question is the D-Day landing, which simply must be experienced. The rest of the levels can range from excellent to pretty mediocre. You might even find yourself getting bored from time to time. The campaign is also fairly short, with a fairly skilled player being able to complete it within a week.Multi-player is very good, though doesn't especially stand out from any other FPS. My advice is don't buy this game if you're only after a multi-player experience, UT2003 is far superior, but as 'part of the package' it's fine.Overall, this is clearly a very good game. The D-Day landing level really is quite spectacular, and should be played at least once. The lack of anything really innovative however, coupled with the game's uneven level design prevents it from attaining 'classic' status and ranking alongside the likes of Half-Life, Doom or Operation Flashpoint. PMJ.

As it is soon to be the tenth anniversary of this seminal game , I thought i would share my , and i'm sure others , memory of it .This is the game that made me buy my first desktop PC back in 2002 . Boy was it worth it .On the single player the stand out mission has to be the Omaha Beach Landing and to be honest that is still the only mission that I can remember from the campaign . But it felt like nothing else at the time . It was totally random wether you got shot storming the beach . This may seam silly to say this now but it did make you feel that you where in Saving Private Ryan .I completed the campaign and it lay dormant on my hard drive for a number of months ........THEN........I gotBROADBAND.I can still remember the day I first launched the multiplayer and my first FPS online experience . It opened a whole new door and was totally blown away , so much so that I did a sickie at work just to continue playing it . The idea of playing against people from other countries was unbelievable and if my memory is correct my first deathmatch game was against guys from Holland and Germany . Back then there was no voice chat just 'Old Fashioned' keyboard typing , this I thought has moved gaming forward in leaps and bounds .My favourite map online was the French Village , can't remember if it had a specific name ?In conclusion then , this for me opened the world of FPS online and have been a fan ever since so this game from EA will always have a place in my heart.

As said already, with a high spec machine and everything "on", its visually stunning. The night missions shows moths and flies buzzing around lights in a tank park, amazing. This is on my machine, Athlon 1.7xp - Geoforce 3 T2- 256 DDR running xp @ 1152x864 with a cable modem.(which negates the connection problem)My sons machine, a P3 500-TNT2-128 - struggles to play it, and has to have a low graphic setting or its too jerky to run, so somewhere in between will give reasonable results I imagine. As to gameplay its ok, the AI is a little dissapointing. Having said that I mainly play online shooters such as Counterstrike and DoD, so it is a little unfair to compare the two.I was expecting to be able to go prone, and can suprisingly take an awfull lot of bullets before dying. So as already mentioned its a bit more arcade than say Operation Flashpoint, UT Infiltration or DoD.The linearaty of the game is also a little frustrating, but keeps it moving along, (I have found myself in Flashpoint driving a Jeep all over the Island for hours). Overall a good game, with some enjoyable levels, the Omaha beach is good- just get to the medic! The multiplayer is not too good I feel, although again looking good, is more arcade than tactics or team play (the fact that your team mates have a star or cross over their head for identification is part of this). If thats what you want its a must, but more challenging multiplay can be found in RTCW, DoD, Cs etc....

Like many of the reviews here, I found the single level demo very entertaining and left me as all good demos should hungering for the full version.Well the full version arrived, hardly had the cellophane landed on the carpet I was stalking the hun with a bullet spewing tool of death. The the quake 3 engine has been pushed to its limits in this game in terms of architecture and texture quality, variety and realism - in many ways more grittier and 'real' than its main current rival Castle Wolfenstein. Another highpoint is the use of sound, all guns etc. sound sampled from the real thing, including reloading and case ejections, on top of that a great dynamic score too keep the atmosphere high!Beware if you want the maximum enjoyment out of this game you need a beefy gaming rig....All that aside the game has two flaws IMHO, firstly it is v.linear there is no substantial element of exploration, your way points are all clearly defined in tune with your objectives. Secondly the game is too short! Yes it states there are roughly 30 levels set across 6 missions, but there is no consistancy in level size or duration, some of the levels are v.easy and short and leave you wondering why on earth they bothered with them.Despite the flaws, if you enjoy a good entertaining FPS, and love the film saving private ryan, then buy this game, if you only have enough money for this or castle wolfenstien then you should buy this enjoy....

This game has many flaws, but none are significant enough to prevent this being one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.I'll get the flaws out the way first; the AI is unrealistic, it's too predictable, it can be very unfair (eg, being shot by snipers who are too far to see) and it doen't require you to think very much; basically it's a shoot-em-up. I would have liked to be rewarded for various things (as in the Tomb Raider games). Even when you complete the game, I thought there would be an overall statistics page/time taken so you can try to better you performance the next time, but there isn't.A well thought out plot has been added but this does little to disguise the fact that this game is all about shooting Germans and little else.Having said all that,it is great fun. The graphics are superb (dynamic lighting, bullet holes, debris, smoke, snow, mist etc) and the game is very atmospheric and absorbing. You know the developers have done a good job because it is actually scary at times. Even the music is good, not overdone at all. You really can play this for hours. On my P4 2.4GHz, 256 RAM with Geeforce 4 MX440 32MB it runs well at the highest settings at 800x600.A must for anyone into first person shooters.

I have been playing the game since release date and think that it is awesome. The graphics are amongst the finest I've seen (3D models with no breaks or obvious glitches and high quality faces), the gameplay is excellent, the AI one of the smartest I've come across (models run away from grenades/run after you/buddies advance and fall back with you...) and the realism will easliy leave you with post-traumatic stress disorder. There are only 4 multi-player maps, but these are excellent and, like the single player, the Omaha beach map has to be the best. Whether you are playing single- or multi-player the hours will just fly by.With regards to niggles:My installation (on XP) required opengl compatible drivers, which were only lacking due to the (typical!) embryonic nature of XP support so close after release date. A quick download and this was fixed. My father has also got the game and on his (Windows Me) he has the modem dial out problem referred to by another reviewer. However, cancelling the dial-up and clicking on the game will run it just fine, although sometimes with on off-set display. Despite these, the game is still worth every penny.

I only just completed Allied Assault and can honestly say it was THE most enjoyable, compelling and engrossing game I've played yet - on any format. I was impressed by Frontline which I completed last year on my PS2 and frankly thought Allied Assault was an inferior Frontline...it was not.The graphics, storyline, sound, level design, in fact everything was just spot on. Making my way through a severely bomb-damaged French town with a squad of roughnecks in tow, whilst the downpour hammered on the tiles above the destroyed houses really engrossed me. The distant whine of approaching P-51's overhead which came into view for only a second to drop their payload upon the ravaged town was amazinglyexecuted with cinematic precision. It is details like this that makes MOHAA stand out from other first person shooters. I could go on about the specific technicalities; the use of dramatic lighting, the great draw distance, the effective use of weather, but you need to experience it for yourself. I congratulate EA for making such an outstanding game - play it for yourself and see what I mean....just can't wait for Medal Of Valour to come out now!

Although i am not a particular fan or FPS, i have in the past bought them on the basis of there reviews and in most cases i have been let down. I somehow don't find shooting a thousand and one holes through a green alien with a super laser fun very entertaining, which is the way a lot of shooting games seem to be going at the moment. I bought this game purely because of the WW2 content and all the amazing reveiws it recieved. As i put in into my computer i expected the worst, but as i started playing it i discovered a FPS that i actually liked.Although the gameplay is amazing it is the smaller things that stand out for me, like the enemy AI is some of the best ive ever seen and the atmosphere is very good too.I especialy like the squad based missions. the only thing that prevented me giving this game a 5 star rating was the length of the game which isn't to great, although it shouldn't put you off buying the game because filling your medal case should take you a while and replaying the game is just as funas playing it the first time. This game is well worth your money if your a fan of FPS or WW2.

I own a (slightly dated) playstation. I have MOH for it. so I thought i'd get the MOH:AA demo to see what it's like, and first thing - for those of you who have a playstation don't assume it's the same. MOH for the PSX is NO WHERE NEAR as good as this! First off, you get a couple of AI team mates, who'll help you and get you outta trouble. Also, the graphics are mindblowing! the AI is fantastic too, and I've only played the single player demo! come on, how many games are there where even the easiest difficulty can be hard, and you have to blow up a tank in a demo, with a rocket launcher. This is gonna be game of the year. Half Life? Half dead! nothing will beat this game, and i'll bet my sniper rifle on it!There are great, realistic weapons, excellent detail and overall, if you're buying one game this year, well here ya go. if you're buying two - sell this and buy it again. I sat and played the demo for days. this game isn't short lived, it's fun all the way. and it's challenging. Max Payne and Serious Sam may have been damn good games, but they couldn't get me hooked like this 'un!

I'm not normally a great fan of first person shooters, I found that they were pretty much all the same and had storylines that made the tweenies look realistic. I wasn't sure weather to hit the buy now button or not, after reading a few reviews I decided to give it a try. WOW!!!! As soon as the first mission loaded I was hooked. Stunning visuals and an awesome soundtrack makes this game an essential to your collection. Graphics making you fell as if YOU are fighting the battles yourself is waht games should always be like. The soundtrack is brilliant, a sort of John Williams soundtrack that even puts the great Metal Gear Solid 2 to shame. The plot is vert realistic from imvading a German village (great)to running out of the sea onto the shore to raid the German trenches and gun towers. The character AI is very impressive, Soldiers will talk to each other and act depending on what you do, for instance, if you hessitate to shoot, the sodier will say things like "what the hell's the matter with you? shoot!" Overall this game is a must buy. 10/10 War Never Looked So Good

I had become quite bored of first-person-shooters, they are usually all the same - good but they dont normally last me long. I tend to get bored of a game quickly, but when I got Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for christmas I was quite literally gobsmacked. This is a game you must buy. Everything is perfected - from the sounds to the actual real feeling of horror inside you when the boat pulls up to the beach in the Ohama level. You actually feel you are there in the war - the game has a kind of respect for the soldiers that served - it blends some of that respect into you as you realize just how bad the war was - this game is really that good. It has no blood in it - something unusual for a shooter - but that makes it better if not worse. And once you are done and dusted with single-player there is an awesome multiplayer. There are also thousands of new weapons and levels you can download from the internet - which means if you keep up with the modifications on the net and/or play the multiplayer this game should last you forever!
