For ease of use and general safety - this cordless plane from Makita gets full marks.Having replaced the cable on my 240V (Bosch) plane with the toughest cable I could quickly lay my hands on (having cut through the original in the blink of an eye!) the idea of a cordless model seemed a good one. When fitting some doors last week, the cable decided to throw itself under the still-turning blade, resulting in a worrying piece of copper protruding from the toughened sheathing!So...The Makita 18V model was ordered, quickly delivered and instantly tested. It is SO much better! The base-plate is smoother and heavier, thus giving more control; the motor is quieter than the mains-powered model, and the dust extractor port actually works (either a small ‘bag’, or vacuum hose, catches about 98% of the waste)Quite why I even bothered buying the mains-powered model, I don’t really know, especially when I have a load of Makita batteries at my disposal. If you’re pondering over whether you should, or shouldn’t buy this, ponder no more and simply press the button!

For those who use the Makita 18v system, this is a good addition.Various reviewers dislike the spring-loaded shoe at the rear of the planer to give the blades clearance when put down. There is a hole in the shoe and it can be held up out of the way by putting a split-pin or similar through it.I also have the Makita KP0810K mains planer and people have asked if the dust-bag from this machine will fit the DKP180Z and I can confirm it does, also the blow moulded case for the above mentioned mains planer will fit.The depth dial on my planer reads 1.5mm when it is set to zero! but this isn't a problem for me as I have always set the depth of the blade by sighting along the sole-plate,the same way as setting any non-electric plane.I'm pleased to see that this planer is made in the UK but hope it's not a QC issue.I still think it's worth a five star rating.(The Makita case part number is 824786-0).Having used this planer to ease an external door I confirm it's up to the usual Makita quality. It's a decent weight and reasonably quiet and virtually vibration free.

Way better than anticipated! We run canoe building holidays, with lots of guests of all ages. Canoe building involves a lot of planing, and sometimes the hand-planes we use can be a bit demanding for some guests, so I thought I would try the Makita 18v planer. It works with assured power, and is a joy. Within minutes, our guest was successfully planing the sides of her canoe, and very much enjoying it. I might buy another one. Runs for a surprising amount of time on a battery. It is professional, well constructed and easy to learn to use, It throws the planings out at the side with significant force. The belt is visible through a window, and looks straightforward to change,It is 20 years since we used an electric planer here, and it does appear that they have become better built and easier to use, Very pleased.Read full review...

Gradually building up my collection of cordless tools and whilst I have a priority list of things, I am occasionally treating myself to a few new toys! This was a bit of an extra treat for me as I have a couple of corded planners and dont use them all day every day. However I wanted to give this a go and I am glad I did.Like all the Makita 18v range I have used so far, this is just great quality and a real joy to use and I already know that its going to make the jobs that I use it for so much easier when I am not scrabbling around for a plug.Seems to be powerful enough and seems to be a real decent build quality. All set up and ready to go and so very happy with this so far.Ive suck a 5amp battery on it and that powers it just great.Very happy with this, and yes, a three year warrenty also whn youcomplete the details on-line.

I am an experienced woodworker, and I have used hand planes for a long time and a brand corded electrical planer frequently during the last 25 years. The Makita cordless planer does a surprisingly good job, it is very powerfull for a cordless tool and can easily do what it promises. The planer arrived super sharp and produced a very nice surface that I have only seen in very fine hand planes. The design is fine and intuitive, and I could use it without having to learn how it Work. The only downside is that it uses batteries, quite quickly, and they warm up. It is going to be my favourite planer.I recommend it.

Best cordless planer out at the moment, nearly as powerful as the kp0800 and very similar to use. However, like the kp0800 the depth adjustment is a bit vague and can turn below 0 and way beyond 2mm. Not sure why Makita doesn't limit this like they do on the kp0810, so the depth adjustment is more precise. Has a great blade brake, is quiet but does eat batteries when planing 2mm. Ideal for shooting in doors, scribing arcs etc

Replaced my electric planer with the 18v. just about all my tools are now Makita battery, either X2, or 18v Li-Ion.The reason for the 4 stars is because shame on Makita they should give the bevel fence along with the efixed edge guide. Here in the US you don't even get the fixed edge guide. Bare planer, and that's it.Wish Makita would get with the program and come out with an X2 cordless tablesaw.

Very powerful plane.Wasn't sure whether it was going to cut the mustard but this has already paid for itself in time saved.A very very nice machine.Well done Makky. You MUST get the bag separately but that is worth it. It saves so much clearing up.The bag catches 90% of the dust and is easy and clean to empty. The bag is a bit bulky to carry around though but that doesn't come with it.

Brought this for my son who has a range of Makita tools, based upon recommendations from a professional Electrician. He has found this range very substantial and with compatible batteries they are excellent. It was a pleasure recently to build a shed from scratch with him with the Makita range it was very easy to saw, drill, plane etc. without any issues.

Very handy to use. The drum / blade mounting system is rather light weight /flimsey presumably to keep the inertia down and battery life up but it seems to work ok. It also has a rather annoying spring down leg so you can put the planer down on the deck with the blade still spinning. I find it just gets in the way in use so i have removed mine.

Great portable planer would recommend to get for any level of woodworkeronly downside is it is a bit heavy on battery would recommend a 5ah batteryportability makes up for the battery usage.also get a chip bag or collector as the amount of chips made can shock youbut they great for the fire accounting to the better half

Having had a Makita 1902 240v planer for over 11 years I decided to expand my cordless range. It really is a highly accurate, VERY powerful but smooth & comfortable planer. Owned an exspensive Festool 240v planer (with curly blades but dust escaped the bag attachement!)Makita SERVICE / 3 year warranty is fantastic. ????

I am gradually replacing all my Makita corded tools with the battery equivalent and this was up to the same level of quality and comfort in use as I had expected. Not sure I like the little spring out blade protector underneath though,I found it got in the way when working on a door, I may look at taking that off.

Really great product. So far used for planing doors. Very solid guide works really well to keep plane at correct angle. Body heavy enough to keep cutter working well but not too heavy to work with - even on the vertical. Surprisingly quiet in action. Need to purchase the bag to keep cuttings from going everywhere.

For this has been an excellent buy. WS a little dubious that the chippings only eject from one side. If you look around most modern planers are reversable. It hasn't been a problem though . And the balance and quality make it really easy to use. .I'd buy one again tomorrow if something happened to mine, Ted
