I use several Kipling bags at home for safely setting aside small gadgets and accessories that relate to my music hobby, including an Alvar. My wife also uses one of the two Alvar bags we own, although in her case it sees a lot more active use out and about, and she is enthusiastic about it.In practical terms, the side pockets and internal drop pockets are all very handy, but as you'd expect the side pockets really can't be overloaded with stuff. For quick access to a smaller tablet device such as a Galaxy Tab 4, though, the side pockets are very useful. I've loaded my music one (in a petrol blue colour, btw) with a variety of small but heavy items and found that the bag keeps a decent shape and doesn't really seem to suffer from straining seams or such problems. In that regard it's like all Kipling bags, very nicely made and, provided you bought right one for your needs, it'll stay the course. The inside liners on the ones we own are light coloured, which is incredibly useful when rummaging around one of these when the ambient light isn't great. It's a really good size for travelling, when you may have a small wallet of travel documents that you need to keep safe, but handy, and a few items to make journeying a little more bearable that you can chuck in beside. It's not a man's bag by any stretch of the imagination but, as I mentioned earlier, it is great for storage while looking much more decorative than a black rucksack in my room. The looks that Kipling aim for, a kind of casual but smart and practical look that isn't overly dressy - in fact kind of wholesome, is a look that might not appeal to everybody; that said, even Kipling's plain fabrics have a nice textural look to them and the simplicity of the overall concept behind each bag, and how well the bag designs are thought through, is I think what turns people into collectors. I like sober luggage for travelling, so my wife was astonished when I bought a Kipling roller case in a wild jazzy orange design. All the sober luggage now holds Xmas decorations up in the attic! In a London Kipling store a staff member noticed my wife's Alvar bag and enthused about it as being one of their bestsellers thanks to the useful dimensions and the range of colours available. She wasn't trying to sell us a second one, she was just enthusiastic about it! It's also as dressy or casual as you'd like it to be, without it being gaudy.

Don't usually write anything on a review but I've been dithering about this bag for ages. I own and love a Kipling Defea, and love how Kipling bags in general can hold all the stuff I feel compelled to carry around but still not feel too heavy, unlike other bags. Wanted this bag because I've wanted a bag that was a bit more compact than a Defea, and have read glowing reviews about how this Kipling Alvar was like a tardis, and watched one of those YouTube bag unpacking videos by a mom who put all the crap one needs to carry about for a toddler in her Alvar- juice boxes, spare underwear, toys etc, plus her own phone, wallet, etc. It sounded like the perfect bag for me. However, within hours of receiving this bag, I had the return labels sitting in my inbox, and the packaging retrieved from the bin. After packing and unpacking and repacking my stuff in, I had decided, 2I really want to love this, but I don't." It was too small! Or so I thought.... It stayed with me overnight,as I don't own a printer. It looked really nice- I loved the purple colour. So this morning I decided to give it a go, even though I knew I wouldn't be able to return it after it had gone out and about town on a rainy Scottish day. If I still didn't like it, it only cost me £24, and I'd give it away. It had all the stuff I'd put in it the day before, but found after carrying it about it settled comfortably. It wasn't too small- just more snug than the larger Defea, where I found my belongings tended to jumble about in the larger space. And after a day with it I thought about the rave reviews and thought- "I get it! I LOVE this bag." Refund cancelled and five stars given. I really get it!

I have had Kipling bags before and now would buy nothing else. They are just so practical and last forever as well as being fun with lots of colour choices and the monkeys. They also withstand a machine wash (30 degrees) and come out looking new! I like my Arkan bag but fancied a new one with zips rather than the bulky front velcro pockets so chose the Alvar. I prefer the cross body bags because I have to hold my toddler's hand to stop him from bolting off! When I first received the bag I was a little unsure if had received the right one as it looked smaller than I had thought it would be. However it still fits in everything I need. Really you can get in a purse, body spray, reusable fold away bag, make up, sunglasses case etc., but not masses of stuff. If my youngest was at the age where I needed to carry spare trousers or snacks I would struggle with this but as I just take my stuff around now it will be fine. I struggled choosing a colour as was torn between the Mitchell Blue and the Expresso Brown. I opted for the brown in the end and it is a lovely colour and more practical and matches everything. I plan to get another Kipling bag for holidays and when I need more room so will get the blue in that style! Overall I recommend this bag if you need a small/medium handbag.

I love Kipling bags and the Alvar is one of my favourites. This one did not disappoint, the material feels and looks different to other Kipling bags I have, but I instantly liked the look of it when the bag arrived. The zip pulls are also slightly different with a small loop coming out of the circular logo part. I don’t suppose it is for anything but I would think you could put a small lock through and attach it to the d-ring for extra security. The only possible problem is that it is very light in colour and might mark or get dirty quickly. With the majority of my other Kiplings I tend to wash them in the washing machine (in a protective net) without a problem. I am not sure if I will be able to do that with this bag.It came with a nice silver monkey. It also has a back zipped pocket. One thing to note is there is no inner key leash.

I’ve never had a Kipling bag before, and wondered whether it was worth the price (there are similar bags out there....much cheaper). Well, I have to say that I am very pleased that I went for this bag instead! It is a quality product - well made, with a good design. I like the fact that there are 5 pockets, 3 on the outside, and two main compartments. In one of the main compartments there is an inner zip pocket, and there are also a couple of small open pockets for a phone etc, plus a key clip. Even with all of this storage, the bag lays very flat, which was something I wanted (I didn’t want a bulky bag). The bag itself is extremely light - no weight at all really, which means it’s easy to carry (no presssure on the shoulder). The shoulder strap is fully adjustable, so it can be worn across the body or just on the shoulder.

Love this bag. I'm in two minds at to whether it needs the double zipped compartments at the top (as i'm worried I may carelessly leave one open while I'm out - SO many zips) - but otherwise I love it. Its a great size - can fit in more than my previous Syro, and sits flat to your body. I also like the square shape - looks a bit smarter and more modern than my Syro. And the wet look indigo lacquer - what can I say - its gorgeous! makes it a bit more special - and means I can take it on a night out as it's a little more glam that your usual kipling bag. Goes great with jeans! My Only negative is I don't like the new pale cream lining in all the new kipling bags :-( makes it look cheap.Bring back the grey with little white hearts - or grey with white spots - much nicer. The new lining doesnt do it for me really.

This bag is definitely larger than I expected but it's not too large by any means. I use this bag daily and it is withstanding the rigours of daily use amazingly well. There are more compartments and zips than I will ever manage to use but it makes a refreshing change to have a bag where I can seperate everything and not have to rummage around in one area amongst everything I've shoved in. The key chain is a genius idea and makes retrieving keys such a simple task. The quality is of course Kipling all over - everything from the zips to the key chain to the monkey to the fabric is fantastic quality and feels like it is going to last for many many years. One of my first Kipling bags (alongside 2 other pieces bought at the same time)it has me hooked and I will most definitely be buying more of them.

I almost knocked a star due to the misleading colour but I just love this bag SO MUCH that I can't do that. So, if you want the blue (true navy), please notice that it is so dark I still haven't managed to find a blue tinge on my bag even in daylight, to me, that's black. However, I was originally undecided between the black and navy anyway and I just loved it so much that I still think it deserved 5 stars. The pockets are great and there are loads of them! I managed to fit everything I used to put in my old bag and a bit more. My old bag was shorter with a wide base so it used to stick out too much for my liking, this one doesn't, it sits very nicely on my hips.Very glad to have bought mine on offer, the quality is excellent. I used to love Kipling when I was a teen, they haven't changed much ?

This bag is better than I expected. Bigger than I thought it would be but without the weight! This was the main consideration for me. Some bags are heavy before putting life's everyday essentials in, but not this one. It's got two main zipped compartments, one of which has a zipped pocket inside. There are three small pockets inside the other zipped compartment. One for a mobile, one for a pen and one for small bits and pieces! There are also two zipped pockets on the outside of the bag. Absolutely love the colour - Crimson - and the webbing strap is substantial, you can extend or shorten to suit. I was a little concerned about whether it would be waterproof, but, having used it today, in the rain, everything inside was dry as a bone. All in all a great buy. Thank you Kipling and Amazon.

I bought this bag to take on a cruise, as an alternative to using a small back pack for moving round the ship or going on excursions. It was a huge success. I flew with British Airways, so was allowed a handbag as well as a cabin bag, and this Messenger bag was perfect for storing my passport, boarding pass and phone, giving easy access. It also fitted into the little pocket on the seat in front of me.The bag is well made, with plenty of pockets. I kept it towards the front of my body. It protected my valuables much better than a back pack, which are more easily accessed by pick pockets. It was also less bulky when getting into the lifts on the ship. I have many Kipling products,so I know this bag will last me for years.

A bit too compact for my wife and had to go up a notch to purchase a Visconti leather which she likes much better, perhaps understandably.I carefully perused the reviews that generally seemed to indicate that the back was big and would contain easily all that my wife likes to carry. Perhaps it would be more suited to someone younger who doesn't have to carry the stuff my wife does, but it was very un- Tardis like. Perhaps it's an age thing ladies and it's a nice wee bag for all that, but it struggles. It will be held in reserve, but will probably be passed off to someone whose load carrying expectations aren't quite so exacting. The bags quality can't be disputed ........it really is very wellmade.

Lots of pockets, lots of zips. A pocket for everything and more.Looks quite tidy looking and professional, which makes it great as I can use it for taking stuff to work or just in general as a casual bag.And of course, you get that little gorilla keyring! :)I'd say the strap is a little short, but I like to have my cross-body bags closer to my knee than hip so I'm a little weird. Just had to get used to it being in a different place to my old bag.Only real gripe is that having lots of pockets right next to each other means that you can only really fit flat things in easily without the bag going into a rugby ball shape.
