MSG: Target in Sight was a game that was victim to the tear in interests between Eastern and Western cultures, whereas the game was well received in Japan upon its launch- the game was poorly received in both the US and Europe- this perhaps not helped by Gundam being quite a niche market in the west, with most Gundam games released in the west being fast-paced in nature and having large periods between releases.Though MSG: Target in Sight DOES suffer from frame-rate issues- the issue is somewhat negated by the nature of the game and its slow pace (this was also in a time that other launch titles had the same issue). The graphics displayed in the game are nothing to complain at- the mobile suits look as they should and in good form- the landscape looks quite bland, though this as a basis for the gameplay, wide and open areas are needed as to have a place to battle without being impeded by loads of obstacles as are areas that do have obstacles such as trees and buildings (which have a good level of destruction). Though it can also be agreed that the draw distance of the game is quite low, it also somewhat serves as a basis for the gameplay- preventing players just playing as a gun-tank, bunkering down and sniping enemy mobile suits before they are within distance to react. The story of the game is hardly a highlight of the game, though quite understandable as most of the story of the time period lies with Amuro in MSG0079. The English voice-acting in the game is admittedly quite bad, though this can easily be avoided by changing the speaking voice to Japanese- which is considerably better (perhaps another reason for the game being better received in Japan). The gameplay as a whole is somewhat of an acquired taste- this is a game that is wildly different to other games in the Gundam franchise, instead of prior-mentioned fast-paced action, the gameplay of MSG: Target in Sight is slow and clumsy- deliberately so, instead of the mobile suit seemingly acting like a direct second body to the pilot, it has a feeling of a big, slow and unstable walker, mainly with GM models, when you unlock Gundams, the gameplay speeds up, and rightfully so. The game also has a feature that even those who disliked the game encouraged for later titles- limbs of mobile suits having individual damage and functions, if you are mainly defending yourself with a shield- your enemy may shoot off the arm with-which you use your shield, forcing you to change your strategy. Equally so, if your enemy has a dangerous weapon that you don't want to face, you may shoot their mobile suit's arm off in an attempt to nullify the threat.Over-all, MSG: Target in Sight is an often over-looked game that was victim to differences in culture badly affecting people's perception on the game, all the while with review sites criticizing the game to the point of not even giving the game a single chance of redemption. Though the game was not released in the west, the game did have a spiritual sequel, "Mobile Suit Gundam Senki Record U.C. 0081", though it can only be bought from Japan, it is quite easy to understand, even if you don't know Japanese. The game took what MSG: Target in Sight had and improved it (thought sadly removing such features as limb destruction, giving mobile suits a single over-all health bar). If you at all enjoy MSG: Target in Sight- it would also be a wise purchase.

The first time I played this game, I was inclined to agree with everyone that hated it. The mobile suit is clumsy and heavy, it turns like a drunk elephant and it will attack in its own good time thank you very much. It's almost impossible to aim your gun if you can't find the lock-on button, the beam sword is powerful but it's slow, unwieldy and flailing madly in the general direction of your tiny enemies is the only way to score a hit. However all these difficulties give the game a feeling of reality that's missing from many. Personally, I love the gritty feel of it, but you shouldn't get this game if you're just looking for a quick shoot-em-up and move on. If you love giant robots, impressive death throes, loss of limbs including your head and you've got the time to level your robot up, then go for this game!

My previous review was a bit too rash. This game is ALOT of fun, sat countless hours playing this, its absolutley awesome. The controls are not as bad as ppl say, easy to get used to, no problem controlling here. Awesome gfx, fun missions and get better and better Mobile Suits. You can play as Zeon or EFF. Lots of fun, a little frustrating in the beginning, but GREAT after you play a little bit. Buy it!
