This is not a review of the complete game, I didn't manage to finish it (I didn't even get close), it's written just to share the experience I had when I bought it, which might help you if you're thinking about buying it yourself. There were no reviews when I ordered Escape from Bug Island, but based on its description I thought this game sounded pretty good; hacking your way through an island infested with all kinds of giant bugs - what's not to like? Sadly, the reality of playing it didn't live up to expectations.First of all, the graphics. Clunky is the kindest word I can think of to describe them. Even in the cut-scenes they're really poor and, coupled with the sub-school-nativity-play-standard of what little voice acting there is,they're just not good enough (even on a console that isn't renowned for it's graphical power). I don't know if games have such a thing as a director in the same way films do, but if they do, the director of this is the games equivalent of Ed Wood. Although, having said that, at least Ed Wood was so bad he was funny, this is just bad. Really, really bad.Secondly, the controls. In theory the way the controls are set out makes good sense. The nunchuck control moves you around, and the Wii remote is used for slashing, throwing and shaking off nasty critters as they try to climb up your trouser leg. Controls with the Wii remote were actually fairly good, but moving around with the nunchuck was about as engaging and responsive as driving down a motorway in a pedallo. Run in anything less than a wide circle and you suddenly find yourself juddering to a near-halt and moving at less than half the speed you were. To give you an idea of just how ponderous the controls are, it took me three goes to walk up a wide ramp to a wooden hut. What's going to happen when I'm trying to get away from a giant praying mantis with the express intention of sucking my insides out through my backside and using my now empty safari-suit to wipe the blood from its mandibles? The whole thing felt like a throwback to the days of something like the Megadrive where you expected glitches, an irresponsive control system and bad graphics in trade-off for decent sized sprites and a free-roaming location. Nowadays though, it's unacceptable.I suspect the reason this game is so poor is that its creators 'Spike' are a small software house who were working to a tight budget and deadline, and that makes me feel a bit bad about being so critical of their efforts. On the other hand, they don't seem to have a problem taking my hard earned cash in exchange for sub-standard rubbish, so I think I can live with myself when I tell you that you'd have a better bug-related Wii experience by digging up some worms and allowing them to squirm around on top of your console. As I said, I didn't play the whole game and maybe it really picks up and gets good further in, but after spending a torturous 90 minutes on it, I very much doubt it does improve and I wasn't going to waste anymore time finding out. So, I switched it off and put it back in its case where it sat for a week until I took it to a game store and traded it for something better. During the week it sat gathering dust I didn't once have the desire or inclination to play it again.I've given it 1 star, 0.5 for what I played of it and 0.5 because the parts of the game I didn't play might have been better. However, if I had stuck with it kept playing I suspect I would now be trying to rate it 0.

I bought this game despite the many poor reviews it has receieved. The idea of a simple action game set on a bug infested island appealed to me. I knew I was risking wasting my money on this title, but I can strongly state that I haven't.I'd pretty much given up on my Wii for some months now, packing it away after it simply collected dust. I bought this title looking for some cheap, harmless and goofy fun. I got that, and some good laughs with it.The controls work fine, much better then other low budget wii games. The graphics are solid enough, like a good looking dreamcast game. It's a japanese title, so those familiar with arcade games like Zombie Revenge, will have a blast with this. Yes,the voice acting sucks, but it's so dodgy it's fun. I've played it for about four hours tonight, first play. I'm really pleased with it. To enjoy this game takes an accuired taste, it's easy to see how ppl could brand it as rubbish, but it's full of charm. It's a game for the sake of being a game, no gimmicks or hyped features, just a quirky, arcade like video game. If it appealed to you before the multitude of poor reviews, make sure you give it a try, I love it.
