Well, well, well - me meet again, Mr Kong.I originally described this game's Wii predecessor as "My favourite Wii game ever", so this edition had a lot to live up to... and for the most part, it does. I would wholeheartedly recommend this game as an excellent platformer that you will be more than happy to keep going back to until you have collected every K, O, N and whatever the other letter is. The graphics are delightful, with good variation in the levels (sometimes it's about timing barrel blasts, jumping minecarts or secret treasure rooms) and there are a good few worlds to keep you busy. The slight issue is - and I hope you can forgive me, Donkey - that I find some levels are very borderline on frustration,at the expense of pure fun. OK, it's supposed to be a hard game, and the final boss is a real swine (or Polar Bear, I forget) but the inclusion of a world that comprises of a large number of water levels is poor decision. Water levels in platform games are like your friend's ugly baby - you can put up with one, but you hope to God that there aren't any more. Unfortunately, there are more here - like a swarm of mini elephant-men assaulting your senses and making you feel a bit sick. But apart from that, it's pretty cool. Just looks like the developers got a bit bored in the middle and churned out a few lazy levels. Buy it. The WiiU is fast becoming a cult console and when they stop selling them in the near future, everyone will want them for awesome exclusive games like this one.

This game is simply one of the best in the platform genre. Its full of life, colour and a nice challenge for anyone who enjoys platformers.DK controls amazingly in this game. Very responsive as you traverse through these deceptively tricky stages that are so well crafted, and so beautiful to look at.Set pieces are plenty and all are accompanied by wonderful scores of music, both remix's of classics and new tracks to get you immersed in this world.Their are 3 other kongs to find as you play and each can change the way you play as well as help find all the secrets a stage has to offer. Finding all the KONG letters in every stage of every island will reward you with a challenging level even the most hardcore of gamers without ever feeling unfair.Though they are optional and not needed to finish the main game. This is a hard game and if you'd like an "easier" time then the new funky long mode is what you need.It doesn't make the game too easy as levels are identical but gives you more health and tricks to avoid death. Though he cannot partner up with the other kongs.Speaking of the other kongs you can have a player 2 join at any time which is great and is just the cherry on the cake of this fabulous game.Yes this has very little changed from the wii u version which you can pick up cheaper. But if you've not played this and want a wonderfully crafted, bouncy, fun and challenging experience I can think of no better game for this genre on the switch.

Honestly going ape over this! With Switch games being pricy I’m usually quite reserved with handing over top dollar for games - let alone Wii U ports. Whereas Mario Kart 8’s port felt like a cash grab (and all the DLC was unlocked), Tropical Freeze is a brilliant choice of port for an underplayed game on its original console. This is one of the best designed platformers you will ever play. Despite feeling an uncertainty about playing a non RARE-produced DK game, Nintendo have take the formula from the classic series and upped it, massively. The levels flow, all meticulously crafted to keep you on your toes. Each obstacle you overcome, you’re confronted with another one, from collapsing floors, escaping erupting volcanoes to timing jumps right so you can float in the air while massive horns blare. It’s the ultimate non-stop McGuffin! The difficulty is also spot on. You will lose lives. A lot. But the frustration keeps you going until you can push on, with an upbeat soundtrack and bright colours so you don’t lose your temper. For young children, it’s great (try the Funky Mode), and for adults, the urge to complete the game 100% and uncovering every secret will give you hours of joy alike.Ape-solutely recommended.

Played this game half a dozen times when it originally released on Wii U and still enjoy it just as much as the first. The game is a real joy to play and experience. The game is very challenging at times but that’s where Funky Mode comes in. Funky mode is basically god mode where you have increased health, more abilities and an overall easier experience. I would advise that you still play this game as donkey kong as that’s how the game was originally intended to be played, but in funky mode you can still play as DK which is a nice touch. The game in handheld mode runs at 720p 60fps and 1080p 60fps when docked which is a nice upgrade to the Wii U version and the game looks more crisp (slightly).Even the loading times have been significantly shortened which was a major complaint I had with the original.BUY THIS GAME

Great game. Lovely visuals and a very imaginative and varied experience. It is rather difficult (I'm looking at you Fugu) so it may not be the best for younger kids. Having said that, there are various power-ups you can buy using tokens acquired through playing and there are plenty of these. My only (subtle) qualm is that sometimes the collisions during death feel a bit blunt. There is something about barely grazing an object and the death animation that follows that feels flat. It makes the world feel a bit sprite-like and not in a good way. I don't need rag-doll physics, but somehow games like Rayman Legends and Super Mario 3D World don't suffer from this problem.

My 3 year old is switch crazy- so I bought this for him an my husband to play together- I just figured it would be a good game for them to play- especially as its marked as PEGI 3But wow we underestimated how hard this game would be!! I figured since he's played Mario odyssey this game would be a doddle for him- I couldn't have been more wrong!!This game is really hard!!!!He's pretty much stuck in the first land as we cant get past the first boss- it probably doesn't help that we suck! But we'll get there......eventuallyI wouldn't recommend this game to a young child- they may be left disappointed!

DKC: TF is an exceptional 2D platformer. It's clear to see from the first level that much more time and love has been put into it than, say, the New Super Mario Bros. series, in my opinion. The environment breathes around you and it's a great challenge for any skill level. My criticism is that this game was released on the Wii U in February 2014. It's nearly four and a half years old, and for such minimal additions on the Switch I think the price tag is a complete insult. The game is very good, but like the Switch and many Wii U ports, it's very overpriced.

Controversial I know, but I’ve had way more fun with DK than Mario on the Switch. As a fan of the original SNES series, Tropical Freeze feels like its refined, next generation evolution. The visuals are beautiful and unique to each stage, with even minor detail like the hair on Donkey King’s character model standing out. I originally played this handheld, however it really comes to life on the big screen in 60FPS. I rank David Wise’s original soundtrack as the best on the SNES but he’s truly surpassed himself with this. A 2.75D platforming masterpiece ?

As this launched on the Wii U, the gaming press generally treated it indifferently as there was an anti-Nintendo vibe at the time. Only a few reviews reflected just how stunning this platformer is. Destructoid handed it 10/10 in 2014 and rightly so. It's one of the best modern 2D platformers - a sprawling epic that's challenging, beautiful, and great fun to play. Plus, there's an amazing David Wise soundtrack - highly recommended. This is the type of game this industry needs, so full credit to Retro Studios by doing the DKC series proud.

Great game a must have for any Nintendo fans or people just starting their Nintendo adventure. Even though this is a remake of the 3ds game it has brought a whole new lease of life to the game the graphics are stunning crisp bright and fun. The story has the same old DK teists to it Nintendo fans have played and loved this is a firm favourite to me. But don’t just take my word the game scored 9/10 by the official Nintendo magazine and has scored highly by pretty much everyone that reviewed it.

This is one of those games that you can't really fault. This is by far one of the best 2D platformers on the Switch console. Gameplay is fluid and smooth. Visually the game looks fantastic, stunning backgrounds, vibrant colours and crisp textures. You can get the hang of the game quite quickly, but don't be fooled as this game does get demanding and can be difficult but it keeps you coming back for more and more. A great addition from Nintendo to their line up of games.

I was surprised by the beauty of this game.Don't be fooled by the simplistic apes in the foreground and look at the background. The scenery is sometimes stunning and I killed DK several times because I was enjoying the wrong part of the game. All of this with some truly beautiful musics and a game play that have been polished over many years of Donkey Kong Country development by Nintendo. If you liked the old DKC, or any 2D platformer you will love this one.

I love 2d platform, and this game is just Amazing.Colorful and nice to look at but very challenging, which is something very hard to find in a game now days because 90% of this type of game has that 8bit look which I really don't like.I loved every bit of it, especially the hardest levels with no check points. If you're buying it for a child, I would look somewhere else though cause it may be too difficult even in the easiest mode using Funky Kong.

Amazing game never had a wii u so its all new to me . One of the best platformers ever made each level feels like a whole team made it. the music is done by series veteran David wise and is incredible . Its honestly perfect. The switch version has 1080p visuals at 60 frames and half the loading times of the wii u version and all new funky kong mode who is awesome and makes things easier for the casual gamer or youngsters. Well worth every penny

I love this game ever since the SNES version that I played as a kid. Other titles have been disappointing since this, however this one manages to create the feel of the original and update it for the switch. It starts off pretty easy but before long you'll be screaming at the various bosses as yet again you fail to batter them. I give only 4 out of 5 stars as no other game will be able to match the original , at least for nostalgia's sake.
