This building kit makes a large number of models that demonstrate the use of gears very well. You learn about differentials, gearboxes and steering with rack and pinions all these can be made and the finished models allow you to see them in action making it easy to understand what is going on.The included instruction book shows how to make 4 models (I've included some pictures of them finished) these start with a simple piston, that allows the builder to get used to the parts and how to read and assemble from the instructions, a differential model, a four wheel drive buggy and finally a steerable racing car with differential and 2 speed gearbox. The instructions also include information about the use and operation of these mechanisms as well as introductions to aerodynamics, it is very well thought out.The difficulty of the models does ramp up quite quickly and you have to take care when building. The first two models can be built together but after that you have to start reusing parts and taking old models apart, the final racing car uses the majority of the supplied pieces to complete it.I've knocked 1* off as to disassemble a completed model is a task in itself, the parts use various sized pins to lock them together and these can be difficult to remove, we used a small pair of pliers, in addition some parts are interlocking and you have to remember how the went together so you can take them apart. Don't lose any of the pins as for the racing car there were only one or two remaining after the build.Although plastic the pins seem to be robust although I'm not sure if you keep assembling and disassembling how long they will last, I think for most people once the racing car is built that will be it due to the hassle of disassembly.Overall an excellent introduction for the budding engineer.

STEM in action. This is very similar to a certain more expensive construction toy on the market, in so much as you build a working model from the basic components up to the finished working end piece, learning along the way not only how things go together but the cause and effect of each of the pieces and how the effect end result. In the box you get an instruction booklet which tells you how to make 4 models ( though to be honest not all 4 are what i would consider proper models, it shows you 1. Connecting rod and piston, 2. Differential, 3. Super buggy 4x4, 4. Racing car.. I’d only really consider two of these proper models and two of them I’d consider components of a car)to create the 50 models possible from the components in the box you need to go online and access the instructions to the other models on the makers website. The instructions also have some information on things like the combustion engine, the differential, aerodynamics, four wheel drive, aerodynamic resistance and wind tunnels at the start, good STEM stuff and a big of old fashioned learning snook in there.Building the main ( what i consider “proper”) models is not simple, you need to concentrate and follow the instructions carefully to get good results ...the kit is aimed at ages 8 and above and I can see why as these are not easy “do it in my sleep” models, they are working, moving things that you are building from scratch- exactly how you learn! Adult help may be required at some points.Comparing this brand to the big name manufacturer ( we all know who I mean) you do seem to get a lot more for your money but whilst the quality is comparable, but the other big name brand does have better instructions included in the box without you having to track the down online.

My daughters (aged 8 & 11) and I have been working through the kit and its many variants for about three weeks and there's been a lot of learning going on. There's a lot more information / instructions available online, so I'd say it's worth having a look for Clemontoni and having a good read around.Anyway, the girls were quite interested to get started but the first task is to remove each of the very many components from the injection moulded frame; they can be twisted / cut off, but sharp edges may remain, so I taped a piece of glasspaper to the table and gave each end of the components a quick sand. There's the next problem ... where do you keep all of the bits? A kitchenware box is fine, but it makes it harder to find the required pieces so I think either a box with compartments, or several small boxes will do the trick. In terms of the instructions, there's a lot of technical, well-written information about the technical background to components such as differentials, pistons and even aerodynamics, but the assembly guide is pictorial, but providing one concentrates, quite do-able (although my eight-year-old tended to press-on and if one component is missed out (or the wrong one used), it's a fair bit of hassle to go back and find the problem.Overall we have enjoyed this kit, and continue to do so, just make sure you don't lose any components!

This is great for any kid interested in how engineering stuff, gears and cranks and all that, is put together. It's hands on and there are detailed instructions - especially if you can download the app to your smartphone or tablet (not Windows unfortunately). I found the instructions easy to follow and results, though they take some time to acheive, are really satisfying! It's a bit daunting though when you open the box. The bits are almost all still attached to the plastic frames from the process of making them so there's a big (and potentially dangerous) job to be done separating them all and cutting off random bits of plastic which may be quite sharp. That's a job best left to Dad or Grandad (or Mum if so inclined!).Given the number of different parts it's a real shame there is nothing in the box for sorting out the parts. A plastic inner tray would be great for this and make assembly easier. I've ordered a plastic craft box with lots of small compartments for that purpose - but, of course it adds to the expense. All I need now is a visit from my grandchildren to have a go at some of the models. I think the box is right when it says for aged 8 and above. The parts are too small and intricate and assembly too detailed to interest younger children.

I've had a great time building this Formula One car with my son, he's 6 but very methodical and scientifically minded and loves anything with huge amounts of detail. The instructions are not brilliant but fortunately there's a great app which you can download which provides a wealth of clear picture based instructions that literally go piece by piece and look very similar to Lego version of the same idea. It's a great concept and my son loves it - he's obsessed with having control of my phone most of the time anyway so being able to click through and see clear pictures of the next step is an enjoyable experience all round. It comes well packaged - almost too well packaged as there is some faffingaround to get all the pieces out of the plastic holders but once it's all set out and you're ready to go then it has been lots of fun building it together. There's other models you can build out of the same kit - I think we might try the off road vehicle or the go kart next. There's also other sets to buy with different models and I can see us having quite a collection to interchange and build up using the app which has loads of different things to build.

Loads of play value with this, although to be honest, the model-makers putting together this kit are probably a bit past the playing with toys stage, and are focused on being young engineers. It requires some of the skills of Meccano, but without the very industrial looks. The construction teaches the principles of differential gears, the car has an operational working rear spoiler, and the 200 parts can be adapted to build no fewer than ten different toys (not all at the same time, obviously). The instructions are clear, and unlike Lego, the challenges offered by the different kits mean that it may well be constructed more than once.Ideal for those children,or older children who enjoy engineering and who no longer find Lego a challenge.

I got this for my nephew for one of the occasions we look after him. He loves construction type toys and this was no exception. He was really pleased with this set and we played together for a long time with it. It is very easy to put things together but a little bit of research online would open up more models as the set boasts many different models you can make.My nephew is 8 so this was a good toy for his age group. Any younger and it would be lost on them. For what you get in this set it is great value. This will be getting a lot of use, I sent it home with my nephew and he has played with it every day since.Worth every penny if you know a child who is into these type of toys.

This is a construction play set similar to LEGO Technic and other building toys out there, but this has a more scientific emphasis that might appeal to older or more inquisitive children. The parts are a bit fiddly to get out of the frames that they are set in – so some pliers or scissors might be in order if you want to get them out more easily. The instructions are informative and there is a good use of diagrams to show how the parts fit together. Some of the parts are quite small, so be wary of losing them. There several different types of vehicle that are possible to be built with the set, so there is plenty of scope for repeated play.

We round this fun to build, but quite tricky. I would say that an 8 year old would probably need help. We were confused at first and thought that the connecting rod & piston and the differential were the basis of the cars you can build. It was a little frustrating when we had to take them apart again to make the car. May just be us though! Most of the build was done by my 19 year old as me and his younger sister weren't as good at it as him! We've not built anything more since building the formula one car as that's our favourite so it's now on display. I'm tempted to get another one now as they are a great thing to build on a rainy Sunday.

This is a good toy for someone that likes to build mechanical contraptions. The diagrams/instructions are good-ish, but some of the sections of the car are quite tough to put together and it's not for the beginner. Probably a good thing for Dad to help build over the Christmas break. You can build the formula-1 car with the book provided, and there is also an app that allows you to access 20 plans for different models. There are plenty of gears and moving parts, and you could of course build your own custom model.

This is solid and well made. The individual pieces are strong and robust and is a great size. It's fiddly though and my 12 year old has struggled fitting some parts together especially the engine. I may add usually he's managed such things like this with great ease before and often builds difficult lego alone. So I would advise it's maybe not for younger children otherwise it's a great project although have found it cheaper else where

This is a fantastic set of products endorsed by the science museum. This one is a race car that comes in a large box and opens a world of discovery once you open it. The experience is similar to Lego technic and the quality isn't far off. Be mindful that this is not a remote controlled toy. The app is to help with the build. It is an excellent way to learn about mechanics.

This was bought for my 9 year old grandson who enjoyed building it. He found some of it a bit fiddly and difficult to undo. The disappointment was when he finally got it finished he found that the drive motor engagement with the gear (which is very small and not very robust) was broken. It took him quite a while to understand why the drive wouldn't engage. What a shame.

This serves two purposes, firstly it's a stunning model of an F1 car, and great fun for any child to play with, but secondly, it is a great way to introduce a child to levels, pulleys, and basic physics. The price tag reflects both the size and complexity of the model, and you won't be disappointed with the results.

My son loves this set. Unfortunately there never seems to be enough parts for what he wants to do with it! Very well thought out, durable pieces and totally interchangeable with other pieces in the same series.
