Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an old-school hack and slash action RPG with some modern touches. The visuals, sound, and music are wonderful, and the characters, although light on dialogue, have heart. The game places a strong emphasis on player exploration, and doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do. This can result in some moments of frustration, running around in circles not knowing what to do, but is also part of the old school ethic. I would have liked to see the map have more options for icons, as you can only place a blue one which must be used for everything (a place I could not jump to, a chest I could not access etc). If you come to a locked door for example, you can't place a lock or key icon and one will not appear at that location on the map, you just need to place the blue symbol. There is no difficulty setting, at least not on the first play through, and "normal" is quite easy. The exploration is what is more tricky than the enemies. If you take some time to craft recipes, explore, and power up your character, it won't be too much of a challenge on the first run through. I've been using only a few weapons so far, even though I have many in my collection now. The abilities you collect must be used at certain points though, which is nice. The items and crafting are well-done, although with the weapons and shard abilities (power ups), it would have been useful if the game displayed a little preview clip of the weapon or shard in action, like the recent Devil May Cry game did, for example. Again, that doesn't really fit with the old school style of the game, but it would have been helpful to see when deciding which weapons to buy and abilities to equip. There are some items which can alter your appearance somewhat if you visit one of the characters in the game, but aside from that and some journal entries I cannot see any other collectables (yet). As mentioned before, the game is light on dialogue and story, but I hope there is concept art or other items to unlock.I've experienced a few glitches here and there, for example the character getting stuck for a moment when floating in water and not being able to attack or jump, or items that enemies drop floating in the air, but nothing game-breaking. The frame rate can also dip at points, and my PS4 seems to sweat at times and get very noisy, strangely when I am just crafting items and not fighting enemies.Overall this is an excellent game and I think does what it set out to do. I would happily trade some of the weapons and abilities for some extra dialogue and non-playable characters to meet and chat to / complete quests for, as I think there is too much of the first and not enough of the second, but never mind. The minor faults can be overlooked when you consider all the positives. Recommended.

Bloodstained is a fantastic game with only some minor issues. It is well worth the investment and can become very fun and addictive. The graphics could be the game's main weakness. It is not intended to be a graphical powerhouse, however the running animation in particular stands out as unconvincing. The designers did a very good job of providing a variety of environments and there are just enough enemy sprites to avoid repetition. The gameplay is where this game truly shines. There are crafting systems for food, weapons, armor and potions. These are all very well done. Some of the rarer items can be a pain to obtain and I found myself having to use online guides for these, however they are not essential to finish the game. The combat is also enjoyable, with the shards concept making for a very fresh feel and variety. The downside is that some enemies, especially bosses, can be quite cheap and not being able to save the game instantly can lead to some frustrations. Once or twice I almost gave up but the compelling nature of the game always brought me back and this should be commended. The story is very minimal and this works very well. The quests given can be very homogenous and occasionally you are left without direction which may necessitate a walkthrough, which is where the game lost some points for me. Having multiple endings is a nice idea but having bad endings makes the concept a bit pointless and it frustrated me having to reload and repeat sections of the game.Overall, this is a fantastically compelling and addicting game. Levelling up and crafting equipment is a tried and true model in RPGs and is very well executed here.

If your a fan of the original castlevania's especially symphony of the night then you will love this game. It can be a bit difficult at times but my advice is level up as much as possible before you face a boss and save often (without spoilers) . But it plays nicely and very smoothly and the animations are good and characters are interesting and colourful.. There are a few faults like certain areas take ages to load and the other thing I noticed is the graphics are not as crisp as the ps4 version which is a shame because the switch can definitely handle next gen graphics as is evidenced by elder scrolls skyrim and the witcher 3 being announced..I just hope they will improve the faults by updates but other then that it is a fantastic game and iga has done a splendid job of making a castlevania type game without the copyright and different story. Also the composer of symphony of the night has made the music for this game so expect some really nice catchy music to go with it. All in all I'm impressed.

Played all modes normal, hard and nightmare, got Platinum all trophies, I can safely say this game rocks. Graphically way nicer than Dead Cells, very smooth animation on the Unreal engine. Music very good and enemies are varied, as usual medusa heads suck but you can use Portrait shard to make it easier.Upgrading and collecting shards (enemy souls) to Grade 9, Rank 9 makes it a passive ability so with grinding and farming, you can become very powerful. Early on Augment luck and gold are massively useful. Cerulean Splash is useful early on as is Chaser arrow.Best weapon for me was Great Sword Deathbringer as you can craft it all the way up to 75 Atk with 8,16,32 bit coins and 8bit nightmare.Nightmaremode was rubbish as all they do is give you ½ hp and mp and make your passive shards less powerful. Also OD only gives you 2 books and you cannot fight him for all the books.

If you loved the 2d castlevania's especially from the DS like Dawn of sorrow etc this you will love. This is made by the same guy who made those 2d DS castelvanias. Though not named castlevania as konami have ceased making 2d ones. Bloodstained is really the same game in terms of gameplay plays exactly like the ds games and does not disappoint better than all the DS ones. The game has great 2d graphics blended with some 3D as well. Music and art style really is the same as castlevania all a plus. Loads of weapons to choose from as well as clothes and different abilities which effect you combat style. Collecting the different loot as well as exploring the castle is the best part of the game. Its not to difficult either however its a great challenge trying to find the way round the castle. All in all this is a great game recommended and made for the fans of the 2D castlevania.

Firstly I have played and finished the game. Technically it is not in the best condition as yet with bugs picking up items and some frame rate drop but a got use to this it was never game breaking. The game-play is fun, rewarding and extremely customisable to your play style. I would highly recommend not being afraid to look up tips if you come to a dead end. Occasionally there were times that through bad random luck I was not given the right tool to progress and went looking all over. After checking for details the solution was to spam one room until luck prevailed. In current state there are a few things to give replay value but I look forward to the addition of the free DLC characters to give a bit more depth to repeat runs.In short worth a look if you enjoy story, but have a bit of patience for its flaws and you wont go wrong.

Honestly, at first I wasn't sure I'd like Bloodstained, however I'm glad I carried on playing because it gets much better. The game is basically a "Castlevania Symphony of the Night" sequel by any other name. So if you like that style of game, Bloodstained should be on your buy list. The gameplay is nice and smooth, with lots to see and do. No completes with the gameplay.Graphics look great, and the music is nice and catchy too. Voice acting is ok, but nothing special. There is the odd bug, and I did have a game-crash too, it's annoying, but not game-breaking.Overall, the game is cheap and well worth trying 4/5 ( because of the small technical issues )A game made for gamers, by gamers !!!

I have not played this game on any other platform other than switch, so I can not comment on what others are saying about the frame rate. For me this game is really enjoyable and challenging in places. I have played a few castlevania games in the past and this is of course very similar style game play, o for those of you who like them games then you should love this. You will have loads of fun with this game as there is loads to explore and do, however it can also be frustrating! The map is very good and easy to read so this will help you out loads! I love my switch as I can take it with me everywhere I go and this game is great for that portability as i can dip in and out when I like.

If you like old, castlevania, side-scrolling games, you should like this. It has all the things you would expect: gothic castle, lots of levels, and lots of monster types and bosses. The game also has many weapons, items, spells, upgrades etc. so there's a lot to get on with.On the downside, the story and voice acting can be a bit daft; and, just like symphony of the night, the game can be difficult on first playthrough until you find yourself certain weapons and spells and then the game can become too easy as you just demolish whatever is in front of you.Overall, it is a fun game that is worth a few playthroughs; but don't pay more than £30 for it.

A great game overall that the metroidvania fans awaited for some years now.But a little dissapointed that they didn't include in the game box something like a poster or an artbook or something. It is a little ungair that mostly the backers of this game benefitted with special goodies except the rest of us that didn't payed extra.Good thing that they will be include hopefully soon a free update for the whole game, and will also see a patch for it because it has some issues here & there.Overall a good and fun experience for the genre lovers by koji igarashi!

Honestly, I've been a massive fan of the Castlevania/Metroidvania games for years and this game is a combination of all the best parts of each. Get the same great kick exploring this castle as the others. The Switch's portability factor is amazing and aside from one long loading screen I haven't noticed any of the technical problems being spread around at the time of writing this review. Honestly totally addicted and hope dearly for a sequel because I just can't get enough.

In 1997 Castlevania Symphony of the night was released and since then, I've never managed to find a game that could match it.After 21 years, Bloodstained reaches that point. If you enjoy metroidvania games, don't hesitate and buy it.I read that at release (for switch) this game was technically flawed due to loading times and other bugs. I've started playing in January 2021 and I believe that those technical issues are now gone.

If you liked those Castlevania games back in the day then you will like this. The way you play the game is very if not exactly the same with modern visuals and voiced dialogue. Exploring rooms and killing monsters and fighting bosses. Leveling up, finding new weapons etc. It is also similar play style to an old game called Super Metroid on an old console called Super Nintendo.

After looking forward to this, I was dismayed when it was a hot mess on arrival so I gave it a wide berth. It was a good price here, so I took a punt - the patches do seem to have improved things. I'm about 2 hours in and small loads between areas, but no real issues. The game itself is a standard Metroid-vania, and so far, I'm enjoying it.

An absolutely wonderful game, pretty much a modern version of Castlevania SOTN. It has beautiful graphics a great story and just wonderful gameplay and Miriam is a great alternative to Alucard. Casual gamers be warned though to get the best out of this game you have grind but it does reward you for it.
