I absolutely love this tribute to Sally Ride in Barbie form. She comes in a large box with a strong stand to display her with pride. She’s wearing her light blue all in one astronaut space suit with brown NASA boots (think more Doc Martins than designer) she’s wearing a white mic and earphone headpiece, which is sewn into her curly brown hair which has been lacquered heavily. She also has her space helmet which the tinted visor opens at the front. She was designed in collaboration with Sally Ride’s long term business partner Tam O'Shaughnessy and NASA to ensure it accurately represented her legacy. This young female pioneering astronaut joined the US space agency in 1978,finally taking her first mission into space five years later as part of the crew of Space Shuttle Challenger to install communications satellites, Sally was just 32 at the time and is still the youngest American to have travelled to space.Sally completed her second mission 1984, and was eight months into her training for a third journey when the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster happened in January 1986 killing all seven crew. Sally never went out to space again but continued to be a leading force at NASA. Sadly Sally passed away in 2012 from pancreatic cancer after a seventeenth month battle. She gave an interview in 2012 not long before she died aged 61, this is a quote from her at this interview;“I never went into physics or the astronaut corps to become a role model. But after my first flight, it became clear to me that I was one. And I began to understand the importance of that to people. Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so they can picture themselves doing those jobs someday. You can’t be what you can’t see.”A truly inspiring woman to all women, including me. If you collect Barbies then this beautifully made Barbie Signature Sally Ride Astronaut doll is a must, though she’s hardy enough to be played with too for children six years and older. This doll comes with a certificate of authenticity, perfect for the collector.

I like and admire the principle behind this 'inspiring women' collection based on successful, high-achieving career women, particularly in today's culture where 'success' amongst young girls can be (mis)construed as having the 'perfect' figure and appearance with large silicon boobs, bum implants, hair extensions and dazzling dental veneers rather than the benefit of a good education and career to achieve your potential. On the front of the box, Katherine Johnson is promoted as a NASA mathematician and physicist and her outstanding achievements are listed on the rear of the box in multiple languages.Based on a real person as a role model, this doll has a more 'ordinary'appearance than the typical glossy and glamorous Barbie doll, wears glasses secured by elastic loops and a relatively plain, pleated and classic dress and while representing Katherine Johnson as a real person, I feel it also conveys to young girls that appearance isn't everything in life. A stand is also included to enable her to be formally displayed as a collector doll - or she can be a toy.She has a typical Barbie figure with long legs, jointed shoulders, elbows and wrists, swivel head and can sit/stand adopting a range of postures and expressions. The pearl necklace is not designed to be removed, her pearl earrings are moulded in place and although her dress can be removed her name/identity badge is stitched to her dress and would be fiddly to remove via the knot behind her neck hence she is not really designed for dressing and undressing, ie not a fashion doll.I'm not sure the 7-8 year old who looked at the doll instantly understood why she looks so 'dowdy' compared with the more fashionable dolls in the range but it also allowed time to sit down together, talk about careers, futures and aspirations - rather than superficial physical appearance and explain why the former is so important and much more meaningful than being the prettiest girl in the class. I think she understood because I then heard her having a similar conversation with her friends.

Of all the modern Barbies, Katherine is my favourite so far. She is fully poseable, demurely dressed, and best of all, she has a NASA ID card! For the little person in your life, this Barbie serves as in inspiration to achieve greatness, but first the child needs to know the story of the person. There is a synopsis of her life on the back of the box, but also there is an incredible film called "Hidden Women", which all five of us plus Katherine Barbie watched together. Being a black woman in 1950's American was tough, very tough, more than any of us could appreciate or imagine. A child-prodigy in maths and later a widowed mother of three, Katherine was a genius working in a menial role at NASA who rose through the ranks, breaking barriers as she went - both for race and gender. Despite the best (male) brains in the country working on the space programme, it was the mathematical calculations that she computed (in her head, not with calculators or computers!) are what finally got American into space. The Barbie doll pays a fitting tribute her her and we all absolutely love her. She may be just a doll, but she has sparked an interest in the history of women and women's rights in three young girls that I could never have possibly imagined. Absolutely worth the price. Even when playing with the doll, they are respectful! WE LOVE HER!For those less interested in the story, as a toy, she is great - as mentioned, fully poseable and a nice dress - proof that Barbie doesn't always have to be scantily clad to look nice. I also love that she has spectacles but still looks great - it is always good to bombard kids with subtle messages of positivity. Her hair is brilliant. And she does take on a bit of a "mum" Barbie gravitas.I highly recommend this doll.

I’m sure that Katherine Johnson would be very pleased with how beautiful they have made this doll but it is still a striking resemblance to the iconic Barbie. The doll is presented in a purple box decorated with a photograph of NASA’s control room. The doll is partly poseable with wrists and elbows that bend but the legs are not jointed so she remains in the standing position or sits down with straight legs. I find this rather dissapointing and would prefer a fully jointed doll.A clear plastic stand is included with this doll so that it can be displayed in a cabinet. The glasses are a good resemblance of the decade and so is the dress which is pink cotton with pleated skirt and white collar with NASA emblem and 3 tiny buttons down the front. She has a thin black belt around her waist and pearl earrings and necklace. The ID tag has a photo of Barbie Katherine with the logo too. Her hair is tightly curled in the bouffant style of the day. A little tribute on the back of the box explains that Katherine Johnson Barbie doll celebrates the achievements of a pioneer whose flawless mathematical calculations helped NASA send astronauts into space. Her contributions inspire young people to excel in math and science and to reach for the stars. This is a beautiful doll for any collector and the price is actually quite reasonable for a change. Additional characters in this series are Amelia Earhart and Frida Kahlo both of which are in the same price bracket so very affordable.

Loved this Barbie it's amazing and gifted to my sister to give to my niece.. she's written an amazing review as follows..Fabulous Sally Ride space Barbie. My daughter loves space and the fact that barbie are celebrating positive female role models is amazing. My seven year old daughter absolutely loves this Barbie, especially after seeing the first all female space walk it’s inspired her to know more about space. It’s also instils in her how females can achieve anything they set their mind to.The doll comes with a stand, which my daughter used to pretend she was space walking! Her outfit is very detailed with lovely gold metallic edging and badges, including name badge.Sally Ride had a lot of bushy hair and this Barbie definitely comes with that! At first it was a bit squashed and crispy but after my daughter played with her for about five minutes, the hair sprung up and softened. All her elbows and wrist and knees etc are posable, very important for mimicking space walking! The only negative comments my daughter had was that the helmet was a bit too small to get over all the hair and the fact that she didn’t have her actual space suit.Other than that this Barbie is amazing. Perfect to inspire young girls that they can become and achieve anything. Also fabulous for just displaying and not playing with, but be warned if you have grandchildren etc popping round put her out the way as she just oozes ‘play with me’ vibes!

The latest addition to the Barbie Inspiring Women Series is Sally Ride, who was both the first female and youngest American astronaut. She was the third woman in space overall.Sally Ride was my contemporary and like her I was drawn to studying physics in school. While my own aspirations didn’t extend to NASA and outer space, I applauded her initiative and achievements both during her lifetime and beyond.Looking at images of Sally Ride at the time of her first space flight in 1983, this doll has been well designed and captured her looks including curly hair and blue flight suit with name tag, NASA and Challenger badges. She is wearing a headset with mic and there is also a separate space helmet with logos.Looking at her memorial page on the NASA site it was clear that her passion for motivating girls to seek careers in science and math was a lifelong one and she remains a role model for current and future generations. Clearly a woman worthy of being included in the Barbie Inspiring Women Series.Given the price, these dolls are intended as collectibles rather than to be played with and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. However, if it’s decided to remove from packaging to display, the doll is articulated and comes with a stand so can be posed. Mine is remaining ‘mint in box’.Certainly an excellent gift for Barbie collectors or for young women drawn to the sciences as a memorial of a truly inspiring woman.

I doubt there are many that didn’t, at some point in their life, dream of being an astronaut and going to the moon. Sally Ride was one of those fortunate few to realise the dream of going into space and she became the third woman in space when she flew in a space shuttle in 1983 and again in 1984.I like the overall appearance of the Barbie modelled on Sally; the outfit looks authentic and is a good replica. A space helmet, which does fit, is included in the box, as is a stand should you wish to place Sally out as inspiration, on her own or along with other figures from the range. The visible finish on the outfit is not so good with some poor stitching in places and the collar and pocket flaps not properly pressed into place so it looks a little dog-eared.Check yours carefully to ensure you are happy with the finish as it does vary doll to doll and a swap out may improve matters, as I found with an alternative figure.I am inspired by Sally and her achievements as well as envious that she travelled into space not only once, but twice. She is a great figure to have alone or as part of a collection and a good gift idea for any child that dreams of going into space.

A Barbie doll by any other name but this one is the same quality you would expect from any other full price Barbie, but this is dually aimed at little girls that parents want to influence with remarkable and successful women and collectors. Sally Ride was one of the great female astronauts of the Space Shuttle programme and this doll of her is mounted in a non-typical Barbie box and with a stand so that she can be displayed.Dressed in her astronaut blues with realistic badges (NASA, US flag and Challenger shuttle), she wears a communications headset with microphone, has great hair and comes with a space helmet. Her outfit is smart and professional and could pass for the real thing.Clearly to sew the seed in your daughter that she could be an astronaut too, this is a Barbie doll that represents a real role model for todays children and puts your daughter firmly able to play astronauts with her young male friends.A great idea - well done to Mattel, but a trifle expensive compared to traditional Barbie models, but then again this is a very special woman represented here.Thoroughly recommended!

Based on a real-life person, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space back in 1983.In this set, you get the Sally Ride Barbie Doll with a really cute helmet. She is wearing headphones with a mouth piece had has really bushy curly hair. If fact it’ a real struggle to try and fit the helmet over her thick curly hair. The Barbie Doll is wearing detailed brown boots and a light blue jump suit with real pockets on the trousers by the knees. The jump suit has some cool Nasa badges and patches with an American flag on the arm. It also has a gold fake zip which is actually Velcro to remove and put on the jump suit.Moving parts on the doll are the head, shoulders, elbows, wrist, hips and knees. The feet don’t move. The dill comes with a clear plastic stand to sit the Sally Ride doll on for display.Inside the set is a Certificate of authenticity and some information about Sally Ride. The packaging has a picture of a rocket on the cardboard at the back.More a collector’s piece than a play toy I would say. Would have been cool if they had included the Space Shuttle Challenger

There's nothing particularly bad about this doll, other than it is just that a doll with no special features other than it comes with a certificate of authenticity (hmmm, why?), and it is based upon Sally Ride (US astronaut), and headlined "Inspiring Women".The doll is well made, and comes with a stand, but I can't help thinking that because it's a Barbie (and there are lots of folk who collect them), they are justified at giving it an eye-wateringly expensive price tag! However, I suspect this is an unrealistically inflated launch price, which is likely to drop.In light of the price, and the interest in Barbie dolls, I suspect this won't be purchased as a toy as such, but for a collector's addition in a display cabinet - which is really rather a shame if that is the case!A good example of Barbie, but nothing very special. For anyone that is a collector, and who wants to display it, they will likely be a bit annoyed that the packaging is not brilliant, and nigh on impossible to open without tearing at least part of the cardboard. Packaging condition is very important for collectors!

Lovely Katherine Johnson doll. Articulated in the arms... but strangley they did not articulate her legs, so her knees do not bend - which is a real pity - I do not understand why they made that decision. The dolls looks like a mix of a young Katherine Johnson combined with Taraji P. Henson the actress who played her in the movie "Hidden Figures" (do watch that movie, if you have not seen it! great to understand what things were like back then - space and race! - I think they should had done dolls of all three women, but they picked Katherine as she had additional accomplishments - she truly was amazing). Katherine Johnson was consulted on the doll and approved the look of the doll.Which is really good to know.Beautiful clothing - the dress and the detailing on the shoe straps, that nicely reflect that era, with some good attention to detail. Nice bio on the box.Great for Black History Month and as an all-around positive role model for everyone. Suitable for Adult collectors and Kids alike. But I do wish they had articulated the legs ...

This Barbie is part of the real life, 'Sheroes' Barbie line, which was created as an homage to real life women who've lived inspiring lives from all around the world.Based on Muslim-American, sabre fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, this doll was crafted with a beautiful and highly articulated curvy body mold, and it comes in her fencing ensemble, a sword, her proper facing helmet & represents Mattel's very first official hijab-wearing Barbie doll. She's a monumental Barbie, and I was thrilled to get one so easily on Amazon. I feel all collector's should consider purchasing one because she's one of a kind, and she's gorgeously crafted. She's also reasonably priced, right now at only $30.00, on Amazon. The final note is the likeness to the athlete, who received one from Mattel herself. The doll is very close in likeness to the fencing athlete, plus, she's also just a lovely doll. Well done Mattel.

This is a very nicely presented doll that is clearly aimed at adult collectors as opposed to children. It depicts Sally Ride, the first American woman in space and is part of a series of similar dolls based on inspirational female role models. The doll comes dressed in a blue NASA flight suit and has a couple of accessories, a headset and a nicely detailed helmet. All of these, including the dolls appearance and 80s hair style appear accurate to the individual they are paying homage to. The box includes a photo of Sally and would look great for those who wish to keep the doll displayed in situ. A clear display stand is included for displaying the doll outside the box.The price is premium, but this is not your average Barbie. The quality and attention to detail reflect the target audience suitably.

You receive a wonderfully detailed figure of Katherine Johnson, elegant in a pink dress, for those that do not know the story of the ladies who worked for NASA, then I suggest you watch a film called Hidden Figures, which is a excellent film about Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, about a time when unbelievably people were segregated and treated different simply because of colour. The Barbie is presented in a great collectable box, the detail is superb, the doll is completely articulated, all joints move. The detail includes, glasses, a name badge and great detailed accessories.I love this doll, not sure it one to be played with or kept and admired.Well done Barbie for making a doll to remember this remarkable women

Rosa Parks is one of the best figures produced by Barbie as part of their ‘inspiring women’ series. The figure is well made and the clothing is pretty close to that pictured on the site, which isn’t always the case; the pillbox hat is plastic and the only part of the outfit that isn’t quite as good as shown, but still acceptable.I didn’t know much of the Rosa Parks story until it was featured in an episode of Dr Who, but that and this figure inspired me to find out more, and I am glad that I did. She was a very brave lady, prepared to stand up for herself at a time when she was expected to comply and say nothing.I have her on prominent display as a reminder that a small protest can become part of something much bigger.
