I began the Baldur's Gate saga right from the start, when the original was first released (incidentally, also an excellent game), and became completely immersed in its great gameplay. Needless to say when the second was released I rushed out to buy it, although somewhere in the back of my mind lay thoughts that it might just not be as good as the first. Once I began to play it however, those thoughts were banished from my mind. One of the first pleasing aspects of the game is the ability of owners of the original to import their character from it, and continue the story. Beginners however need not be afraid, you can generate a new character too from a wide variety of races, classes, and kits within each class - the first sign of the game's great depth. The game also eases the player in so if you are a beginner, it will not be hard to become accustomed to either the story or controls. The storyline is immersive from the moment the game begins in a dark dungeon, continuing from where the first left off (even new characters act as if they have been through the first installment). The plot continues to develop and sustains the players interest throughout the game. The role-playing throughout is strong, and it is up to you which path to take in the story, prompting the player to think through a problem in many cases. It is much more than merely constantly killing monsters. As your characters levels increase, you can enhance their abilities as you see fit. An enormous amount of quests await the player throughout, and whether they affect the ever twisting plot or not they are all interesting. When you start on one, you'll want to complete it before powering down your PC. Or maybe just one more quest?Character interaction is much improved in BG 2 compared to the first, and members of the party you can eventually build will often talk to you or amongst themselves. The majority of characters who join you have their own sub-plots, and it is possible to have romances with certain characters in your party, giving access to more sub-quests and areas of the game, which can yield powerful items for your characters to use. It is estimated at about 200 hrs of playing time to complete. The expansion, Throne of Bhaal is the conclusion to the saga, and although it is much more linear than Shadows of Amn, it offers a huge dungeon to explore which is not part of the main plot (this can also be accessed from Shadows of Amn if the expansion is installed). Character development continues with the story, and many new items can be discovered and made in addition to those available in Shadows of Amn, enhancing various abilities your characters have. The graphics are good for the type of game and work effectively, especially monster animations and spell effects. The addition of Environmental Audio is a nice touch, particularly echos in dungeons.Although it does have minor flaws, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn together with its expansion is a really great game. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do it justice in this review (or maybe fortunately for those of you who have had enough of reading). The developers clearly had a real passion and took care when creating it. At this price for both, it's well worth buying.

Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn picks up where Baldur's Gate left off. After dispatching the uber-bad Sarevok, you're kidnapped by an evil Wizard, Irenicus, who deposits you in his dungeon. Picking the lock of the cell door, one of your group helps you out, and the adventure begins again. In the style of the first Baldur's Gate, BG2 is a top-down group RPG; whilst you have full control over all of the characters, the game will end if you (as the protagonist) die. It's a notable improvement on the first game - the graphics look slicker, the characters move more easily, and the game is much more playable. Whilst you might feel it's strange to start with a character at level 7 (i.e. with quite a few skills)rather than at the beginning, it actually helps to have more tricks at your disposal and characters which can take a few knocks. The game thunders along, and the quests and loot are varied and excellent; from searching for a magical sword underneath a pub to unravelling the suddenly-hostile druids in a region, to the main quest of rescuing one of your party members and finding out why you were kidnapped in the first place. Most of the memorable figures from the previous game are back - Minsc, Imoen and Jahira are all present and voiced by the same actors, and there's a new set of allies and enemies to encounter. You're also given the opportunity to acquire a 'stronghold' appropriate to your class - a magical sphere for wizards, a castle for fighters, a place in the paladin's hall for paladins etc. It's a nice touch which makes you feel a bit more settled within the land. The main plot moves along very nicely, and you'll feel like you're growing in power and expertise as the game moves along. For a large part of the game, you can choose to move between certain major areas / submaps on the continent, which are added to as you get more quests. The areas are usually very large and frequently contain additional sub-quests. The scenery is incredibly beautiful, from lush countryside, to the claustraphobic uncertainty of the underground 'underdark' realm, to the tree-city towards the end of the game. The difficulty ramps up nicely, and some of the spells and abilities at the end are truly spectacular (notably the ability to stop time!). It's all absolutely compelling - you'll want to know what happens, be driven to get your character to the next level, get fond of or annoyed at your companions, and feel a glow of satisfaction when you get the bigger, better weapons and gear. There are very few bugs or negative points to be made about the game. It can occasionally be very difficult - again, the enemies don't seem to 'scale' to your level, so you can get overwhelmed or overpowered occasionally, and there are sometimes bugs with movement, although the characters can 'shunt' each other out of the way. These are minor things though, and overwhelmingly, the game is absolutely compelling, and one of the best games out there. It holds up today, and even though it contains around 200 hours of gameplay, you'll find yourself coming back to it again and again.

The Addon/addin for the original Baldurs Gate 2 is just out and the already come with a bundled pack. First of all something about the storyline : you are a child of Bhaal (yes Bhaal written with BH and not with B like Blizzard did in his Diablo2 game) The land is occupied by a mad wizard. Your job is to find that wizard and kill him. Now the expansion ¡¥Throne of Bhaal¡¦ gives you the conclusion of it all after you¡¦ve killed the wizard. The game start with the creation of your main character, fist you¡¦ll choose the race (human, Halfling, elf, ¡K..), also the profession (ranger, fighter, mage, thief) and the alignment (good, neutral, evil, ¡K.)and of you go in the world. The game itself is an RolePlayingGame with lots of dialogs and combat. The view itself is isometric (topdown). The graphics of it all are really neat „³ handpainted background and this is nice hiress (800x600, 1024x768 or even higher) During the game itself you¡¦ll get closer and closer to the wizard by solving various quests : joining a thief guild, assassination of a bartender, killing vampires, ¡K. You¡¦ll see that it¡¦s a really nice storyline. Also not to forget : you also meet Drittz, a well know Drow figure in the Forgotten Realms World (see books). The same game-engine is also used for other games like : IceWindDale, Heart of WinterNow about the expansion. This is both an addon as and addin. When you install them both at the sametime and starts a new game, then you can go to a new area on the worldmap : Watchers Keep. This is a big maze with lots of puzzles and a really though bigboss at the end. Then after finishing the BaldursGate2 game itself by killing the mad wizard you progress to the expansion (addon). For some of us who already completed the game you can choose to import your party and start a new EXPANSION game. Then you can play the whole expansion world but NOT the Watchers Keep. The Sound/music of the game is really giving the game a mood to dream away and giving you the idea that you are actually there in that world. Also many of the dialogs are voice-recordings.The game will give many of us (when you complete all quests/subquest) around 250/300 hours of gameplay, and then around 150hours for the expansion. Please note that the expansion starts at a difficulty level where the BaldursGate2 game ends. The perfect game for rainy nights (when you cant sleep)

I don't think enough can be said about how good this game is. I've played Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights but both pale in comparison to this. Okay Both of the above games look prettier but they lack both an enjoyable story and good single player gameplay.Understandably both MW and NWN would appeal more to people playing over the internet and sharing a group adventure. The charm of BGII is that it is a great way to spend your life (I'm not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing) by yourself for a whole week (that is if you don't sleep, have a mobile toilet and live on pizza deliveries - plus switch the phone off, there will be no time for girlfriends, boyfriends, friends or dying relatives while playing this).Although part of your party is made up of NPGs you have near complete control over their actions (on occasion they do run away) so you don't have to suffer the consequences of an idiot NPG charging a dragon with a dagger (which is what happens in NWN).The action in the game is also spaced out so that you are not bored to death walking from place to place (such as in Morrowind were I spent over 2 hours swimming in a river, totally lost for no reason whatsoever except the direction I were given were crap or the map was useless or both) or you are walking into one brawl after another (like in Icewind Dale). Fights are nice but too many and it makes the storyline redundant (you are a band of adventurers not an army) and too much storyline makes it pointless playing the game (a book becomes more fun). Because there is a nice balance of characters the fights are always tactically enjoyable. The added bonus is because it is such a great game it has spawned a gang of fanatic fans who have only been to happy to enrich other peoples lifes by spending a lot of their life creating add ons and extensions. So you always have more time to spend hooked into a great fantasy. This game is old yet I'm sure that it is better (by far) than any other RPG that has come out in the past 4 years. Buy it if you haven't played it yet (do not buy NWN).

This was the LONGEST the MOST FUN games I have ever played! The original BG series was excellent in all of storyline, gameplay, music and stability. Now, nowadays, sequels usually mean a graphically-improved expansion (at best). BG2 is a rare exception of the sequel clearly SURPASSING the original. And in the case of such great original, this means a lot!Words fail to describe the perfect harmony of brilliant ideas, emerging story-line and detailed coding that makes this game an unsurpassed classic! Do not let the slightly outdated graphics discourage you. They were cutting edge only some years ago - and you will be able to unleash their full potential even on mid-range PCs!I have yet to meet anyone who has played it and not raved about it!Hard-core D&D fans will find the character building, fighting checks and balances and overall experience very close to the actual pen-&-paper games.Casual computer gamers will notice none of the tedious stuff of other cRPGs as the gameplay runs smooth and beautifully. You even have the choice to turn it into either a turn-based or an action game by tweaking the auto-pause options! I am telling you: this is how computers games should be!You will let yourself get lost in the deep dungeons of the labyrinthic story; you will be laughing out loud to the humorous dialog; you will be surprised as to who is a double and triple-agent.There is an evil beyond imagining unleashed and only you with your party can stand in its way.Party members offer a multitude of unpredictable balancing points and diverging story-lines of their own: side quests, conflicts and love affairs enrich the story in so many original ways!An unsurpassed classic!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Amazing. You can keep starting again with different characters and it never gats boring (except perhaps the first chapter dungeon, which after playing about 50 times and can do in my sleep, I wish I could start in Athkatla!). The NPCs are brilliantly done, for example Anomen. I HATED him at first, but needed another person, and hated Nalia from last time I played it so let him join me. I started to feel a bit sorry for him when he went on about his awful childhood, so thought I'd let him stay until he became a knight. By that time he'd reallt grown on me and he is a permenant member of my party! The NPCs then are not completely bland and pointless, but have personalilties that you can reallt hate (like Nalia)or grow to like a lot. This is different from others that I've played, like Neverwinter Nights in which, though another brilliant game, you don't really get to know the characters that well. The main plot is brilliant too, what with vampire killing and dragon slaying and everything else. I love the sub-quests too, because they're all so different, and work out different depending on what your character is like.Basicly this, along with Planescape: Torment, is the greatest game ever to grace this planet, and if you have never played it, you have never lived! It is very addictive too, so make sure you have hours to spare before you start playing!

Baldurs gate was an inspired game, coupling the brilliant gaming system that is AD&D with a gripping storyline and great gameplay. Baldur's gate 2 returns to do even better with superior graphics allowing for an increase in resolution as well as 3d accelerated special effects. Improved gameplay, an even better storyline with multiple sub-quests and a vast array of NPCs to play with are but a few of this games merrits.Unlike other RPGs Baldurs gate gives you direct control of your fellow party members, but not so much as to devoid them of personality - a perfect balance. The DVD version removes the need for disk swapping, which believe me is a relief if you don't have the harddrive space for a full install. Also take into account the brilliant Throne of Bhaal addon, which is also available to buy now, and also the free addon called "The Darkest Day", which is available to download free from the internet now! This adds at least 30 hours more of gameplay to what already is the best RPG i've ever played. If you don't own it buy it now!

Baldur's Gate II is probably the pinnacle of BioWare RPGs - and that's saying a lot because BioWare are among the best story-tellers out there. It exceeds BG.I in every way. The story is truly epic, breath-taking in its scope and variety; the characters are compelling and properly fleshed out (you will care about every one of your team); and the visuals, while obviously somewhat dated by now, are beautiful in the context of a ten year old 2D RPG. Everything about this game is lovingly crafted and detailed.I first played BG.II back in 2001 and it won my heart from the beginning. The only reasons I don't go back to play it again? Firstly, it's almost too epic, and the grand story arc just wouldn't - couldn't - be as powerful as it was the first time round.Treat yourself to a contender for greatest RPG ever, order Baldur's Gate II right now. Tell 'em Minsc and Boo sent you. Modern story-based RPGs might have shiny bells and whistles and 3D effects, but this is the Daddy of them all.

Baldur's gate 2 is ace. The storyline itself deserves a medal , mixed with the lush graphics and beautifully cast voice talentbaldurs gate 2 is amazing . Possibly the best RPG ever , even though it's isometric it sill captivates you. The sheer scope for character class, race, and abilities is immense. Add to that the scripting of the fully interactive party members and the ability for romances , a major new development, an ace game becomes ace squared.Go see for yourself and buy a copy, you won't regret it , don't buy diablo 2 or neverwinter nights , get this instead !
