Having been born in 1987 I grew up in the '90s and some of my earliest and fondest memories are of gaming on my first ever console; the SEGA Master System as well as on my Dad's incredible piece of kit - the Atari ST. Every chance I got I'd have a blast on my Dad's Atari ST as he always seemed to have the most amazing games I'd ever seen - top notch graphics, hard as nails gameplay, and thumping soundtracks so good that I could listen to them all day. As a starting point in the generations of computer & video games, I think this was an almost perfect time to drop in. That being said, I did wonder what the hell my Dad might have played before his Amiga, before the ST,and it turns out that it could likely have been some of the wonderfully colourful and abstract games featured here on this disc - the kind of games that I saw tucked away in the back of local arcades during the 1990s, beeping and bleeping away to nobody, overlooked, overshadowed by light gun games, and ultimately forgotten.Unless you played the 2600 during the 70s/80s, or you have nostalgic feelings and memories of hammering away for high scores on games like Centipede, you may struggle to find much enjoyment here. However, if you have an appreciation for computer & video games as an art, its history, and as a community, you might just appreciate some of the offerings here.Of the 50 games available you may only find a handful that you actually enjoy and come back to. For me; Centipede; Lunar Lander; Bowling. Fatal Run; and SwordQuest have been some of the more enjoyable titles. Fatal Run has some lovely, colourful graphics for the time and Lunar Lander is almost soothing in tone (that is until your fuel runs low!) and in its simplicity - you can almost imagine actually helping guide the lander to the Lunar surface using some kind of old-fangled computer. And now that I mention it, imagination plays a big role in how these games are perceived. Their simple graphics and sounds may seem primitive and laughable by today's standards, but for me this serves as a framework to which my imagination can wander and overlay my own ideas and stories, and that for me is all part of the enjoyment. Also, unlocking the amazing artwork with each Achievement is a real bonus!Could the compilation be better? Yes,Some unlockables would have been nice.Higher quality scans of the manuals would have been great, especially for games like SwordQuest.Controls can feel a little awkward in some titles. The multiplayer is essentially non-existent as many gamers are playing more current titles online.Has Volume 1 made me curious enough to check out Atari Flashback Classics vol. 2? Definitely.

Games are fun and retro but not the ones O enjoyed on the original console never mind still enjoyed showing the nephew and niece what arcades were like in our youngster years.
