With these fantastic new consoles come out, i am awaiting a ground breaking game, something never seen before, and something that couldn't ever be forgotten. So far i've had the joy of playing MGS4 and Bioshock both of which i couldn't be more pleased with. But i'm looking for innovation, for something different, and for a few months i really thought AitD would provide it. Having looked at demos explaining real world rules etc, i was confident, until a day before i bought it. I read a few reviews from pros and it just didn't sound good. Still i bought it, and have completed it once, and not touched it since, nor do i expect to. In the end, difference is risky, what you can be sure of with this game,is its not like any other, its not another FPS thats for sure, and its not like your Silent Hills/Resident Evils, but the execution has let down these ideas, and in terms of fun, this game provides very little.Whats right with it? Well as i've said its different, the use of fire in the game is brilliant, probably the best you're likely to see, and sometimes it can be breathtaking (particularly when absailing down a cliff/building or driving through the city as it crumbles around you) - the picture/sound is top notch.Whats wrong with it? Short answer? Too much.Frustration is a word i caught before writing this, and i think that says a lot. I bought this on its release and completed it this week, and one of my criticisms was lack of challenge/short, so it didn't take me that long for those reasons. Playing for hours upon hours is what i could do on Bioshock, but on AitD, not unless i wanted a headache. For fun value, its just not good enough, and at best worth the 2/5 i've given it. The only time i really felt i was enjoying the game was when i needed to use fire to get passed a stage (creating fuel trails and setting alight, that sort of thing).Monsters - dull, and not enough variety. I can think of 4 regular opponents, they were: 4claw creatures (like Half-Life2), aggresive humans and the ones you couldn't kill: a dark blob that you just defend against using a light (usually a torch), and something in the ground that you just had to avoid.Again it wasn't challenging enough. Sure you die a lot, at the beginning for the usual reasons with a new game, or during sections which you're having to make quick decisions etc, but as a challenge, it just wasn't hard enough. I felt it was short. And the ending was dreadful - there's two and neither are all that great, normally i'd expect a final battle but there wasn't one. As a result the story that was fine up til that point, was ruined and could no longer be considered a positive in my view.Overall, the game is worth praise for trying something different, but the many faults cost the game a lot, and disappointed best describes how i feel after completing it. I'll give it a 4/5 for gameplay, but a 3/5 wouldn't be unfair. I have decided not to take my expectations for the game or the hype into account with this vote, if i had, the marks may have been much worse.Hopefully Alan Wake (released 30/09) will make up for this disappointment. If not, Resident Evil 5 will be amazing, there's just a long long wait for it.

I don't see why people complain about this game. I've only been excited about AiTD for about a month, and it has reached the target it was aiming for. It is very enjoyable. The controls aren't clumsy at all, more intuitive, for example you have to actually swing your weapon with the right analogue stick, blink your eyes to clear your vision, actually heal spesific wounds with a Healing Spray by selecting areas with the left analogue stick rather than just selecting a health kid and using it, etc, and it rarely feels that it is overpowering you only once in a while I have made a mistake with the controls. I have rarely found glitches in the game, and the very most I have found was in the end of Chapter 2,in a very cinematic car chase through a crumbling New York. The car controls are also very arcadey and easy to play, although I admit that even the slightest touch will make the car stop in a very overreacting fashion.Although the animations are fairly stiff compared to nowerdays, they are still above average in comparison to Hour of Victory (the worst game ever made, period), as is the look of the character. The fire effects are really beautiful and it can be exciting while you try and end a fire as it engulfs the walls around you! So far (around half way through the game) the only issue I have is with the the DVD menu (which allows you to skip after a puzzle if you are finiding it too hard), and that issue is that you will lose your current gained items for your jacket (there is rarely any gun ammo, so you have to combine items you collect and use them with your gun for greater effect, i.e explodable plastic bottle + hankerchief = makeshift Molotov cocktail) at that current time when you skip. Also sometimes you will throw the controller in anger at yourself dying, because a lot of the time when you die, you know it's YOUR fault because you made a small mistake.Other than what I have mentioned, this is a really brilliant survival game revival, without the horror as it really isn't that scary (only with jumpy bits, like a corpse suddenly apprearing on the windshield of your car). Buy this as it is worth your money.P.S: Feel free to really disagree with this review, as I have had a LOT of experiance with video games and I personally found the issues easy to get over.

I actually quite like this, its dark and moody and very cinematic. The graphics look good, not the best but good enough and the storyline seems strong and full of twists and turns. The car chase near the beginning is excellent with the road being ripped up all around you as you battle to get through the city and out of harms way...excellent.The controls are quite difficult to get used to and it did take me about 15 attempts to kill the first bad guy! Plus it is quite annoying how when you die you go back to the beginning of the sequence, especially if it takes 15 attempts to do the first part...I love how the game is designed like a TV series, everytime you switch on the game it gives you a "Previously on Alone in the Dark" preview of the game you have completed so far, a very nice touch. As you progress the game it gets better and better, with lots of different puzzles along the way, I'm not talking jigsaw puzzles here but enviromental challenges such as using a gas cannister to explode your way through a security door, or using a electricity cable to electrocute nasties clinging to a metal fence...brill.The best part of this game though is the mood. The developers have done an excellent job of creating a truly creepy experience. One scene in particular see's you venturing out of an underground tunnel into Central Park. I felt genuine fear as I roamed through the fog trying to find my way! with zombies dotted around at random, sometimes in clusters and sometimes not, and this makes it feel almost real instead of the typical kill a few bad guys and move onto the next part and kill a few more. It leaves you constantly on guard not knowing from where the next will strike. And it aint easy to kill these suckers either, panick really sets in as you fumble for weapon of choice, and don't think you can take much pounding from these guys, 1 strike and your dead!I'm really getting into this, can't wait to get home!

This game was beyond what i expected...You first wake up surrounded by bad guys..one of them tells you to look at him...i thought it would be funny to gkeep on looking at the floor after sitting up...but the guy in front of you starts to get annoyed and shots "LOOK AT ME!"..i kept on looking at the floor and one of the other guys says "Hes messing with us" and then BANG!! i get shot in the head..not the best start i gotta say..but fun all the same..Anyway after getting ouuta the basement and near a set of stairs..something bursts throught the door and grabs the bad guy that was taking you to the roof..tearing him apart in the process...from then on your mission is to stop whatever killed that bad guy in the beginning...Having 2 modes for this (1st person view or 3rd person view)personally i prefer 1st person view but thats up to the player...you have to figure out how to get past metal doors using a range of equipment throught the game, and how to kill some of the bigger monsters using whatever you can find and combining them together to make more powerful wepons...I havnt finished this game yet but i have got as far as having to destroy some of the "evil roots" to gain their power so it will make it easier to kill the zombies and other monsters you encounter....Aslo being able to drive cars you have to drive as fast as you can round the city to escape something that is destroying the road right behind your tyres..failing this you get flipped into the air and die...The graphics for this game are excellent as the screen or "your sighing" will go blurry if you get spat at by some of the little creepy spider crawlers and you will have to keep blinking to clear again....This a defo good buy from amazon as it was cheap too..anyone willing to play this game i advise you that it will be best played at night and if you have it..with surround sound...

I only bought this for the extras,I already have it on 360 and PS2,a few words about the extras,It's all pretty nice, the figure has a competent paintjob on it,the artbook is nice but there's no text in it and the CD is barely 20 minutes long,I've not watched the DVD yet and as for the game, problematic it may be but it's better than the PS2 version,it's widescreen and aiming is via the Wiimote and is not like the PS2's uninverted control,I've not got to the driving yet but it has similar controls to CoD3,so it should be awful then...yes the driving was/is awful, the first bit isn't so bad but the forklift and subsequent driving sections are terrible,it took me a dozen attempts to do the forkliftand I've not done the next one (I can't even hotwire the car fast enough),I've recently watched the DVD and it's barely 50 minutes long and there's only about two minutes dedicated to the Wii,the rest is 360,It's hard not to watch it with a sense of irony as pretty much nothing they declared actually happened, sure it may work in their tech demos but as a coherent game,no.There's not much to the DVD,mostly looped praise for their own game and the artbook is replicated entirely on the DVD!,the producer says it'll be the 'first game you can finish',you could if the controls etc. weren't so awful and I've finished many games 'normally' without skipping bits,GoW 1+2,Medal of Honor etc.I like the game,in essence, but it's so badly executed it's annoying.

I haven't yet completed it, but of what I've played (about halfway through), it is pretty brilliant. I love the inventory system...it tests your wits having limited space so you have to choose what to keep and what to throw away. The use of fire in this game is great. You can also combine items to give you what you want...eg. combine some flammable liquid with your gun and you've got fire bullets. I also like the real-life rules this game has. For example, you don't have to go looking for a key...you just grab a large object (eg. fire extinguisher) and bang the door down! However, the controls can sometimes be annoying and the saving system is a bit strange...if you save, and load your game again, you have to start from the beggining of that sequence (sub-catergories of episodes). But sequences generally aren't that long, so thats not that much of a problem.Other reviews (on the internet) have said the driving controls aren't very good but I think they're okay. Also, I was reading in another customer review that he had to do the 1st driving section about 20 times...I think he was exaduarating as I did it on my 1st attempt!Overall, this is an enjoyable game and I would recommend that you probably buy it.

Ive had a strange history with this game, i bought the PS2 version years ago and yes, i'll agree now that the ps2 version is AWFULL... mahes me wish i never spent the money haha, however, i bought the xbox 360 version because i eard through the grape vine it was done by a seperate developer (in the same way SS-Double Agent was) amd even from the opening scenes i could tell the difference! Alot of people complain about the game because they oversell it, people see the pictures or see the videos and think "wow, that looks incredible" when trailers and screens are for PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES! do you really think a game would sell if the developers swapped thier over the top, almost false advertising ways to "yeah, its pretty good i guess" no. it would not. Contrary to popular belief, this game is solid, the options of things you can do are realistic (not often does a game let you do something you never thought of as opposed to "omg, why doesnt he do that to that?" etc) the graphics are good, the story is good, the effects are AMAZING and the monsters are irritating, but thats part of the game right? =)

Firstly do not listen to the reviews (1 star, I dont know whats wrong with some people),I must say this is a fantastic game which I have enjoyed playing, The gameplay is realistic (where you can do almost anything from combinding items together to hotwire cars etc), and the graphics are clear cut, There are plenty of jumpy bits which catch you when you least expect it(this is the future of gaming NEXT GENERATION).The only fault I can pick with this game is the handling of the cars which I got used to after a little while, but dont be put off by this as there are only a couple of driving levels(if you are a expirenced gamer then this will not be a problem for you)There are plenty of puzzleswhich you have to think about and plenty of things to shoot.Overall I have to say this game Is my favourite (on the Xbox 360) so far and you wont be dissapointed if you like games like resident evil etc...I give this game 9/10 and I recommend people to play it.YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED

Now I might be a masocist, but I loved the game. Yes I have lost many an hour trying to drive to Central Park, but I can now do it it 2 or 3 trys now (and aint I proud lol) and going round the park killing deadly trees does take up time (specially when I hadn't worked out I could use the GPS in the menu... duh!) But in all it is strangely satisifying to complete, they always say the best things are worth fighting for *tries not to put tongue in cheek*I think the reason I loved it... apart from great graphics, story.. yadda yadda yadda, is that it actually takes you time to master the control and to complete. I am fed up of games that take me 2 days to finish and I haven't once wanted to throw my console out of the window....Alone in the Dark makes you want to do that about every 10 minutes... how satisfying lolSo if your a masocist with too much time on your hands with double glazzing ~so you can never actually get the console out the window, you will love this game!!!!

I recently purchased this game from amazon.. i was certainly looking foward to it. it was actually a good service from find price.. on to the game. the game is actually not that bad despite having bad reviews. i giving this game 4 stars out of the 5. the game story is intense. some parts will have you jumping from your seats. i got scared when the vampires came on the screen suddenly from no where.. lol.. the gameplay is ok. the controls are ok despite people saying that they chunky. the camera movement is pretty bad. people were right about this. this is the 1 bad thing about the game and it sadly suppoils it.. the eposides are quite long 30-40mins.. the game should take at least 2-4 days to complete.i currently on eposide 4.. the game does get quite boring after a while.. But the game is worth a go.. overall not a bad exeperience.Remember dont play the game in the dark...4/5

I don't care what anyone says, this game is brilliant in most respects. Despite the claims of its rubbish control system I managed to pick them up pretty easily and the object manipulation feels so natural(then again, maybe I'm just great!) The one thing that has really let the game down though is the glitches! NPCs magically teleporting across the room, being suspended in mid air while "holding" a ledge, the camera! At one point there was just a floating door on my screen surrounded by blackness! The camera issue can be solved by changing to first person view though, which is also handy for some of the more precarious situations. If you can look past these flaws though it is a truly immersive and innovative game.I would heartily recommend it to fans of the genre. If you're not huge on survival horror though probably best be stickin' to Resident Evil for the time being.

I class myself as a casual gamer. I buy a game play it for a day or so then move on to the next, very rarely do i find a game that really grips me enough to want to finish it(which i did with this). Contrary to most of the opinions shown here i can honestly say this is one of those games. The variety in gameplay is excellent, with brilliant puzzle sections that require some thought but are never hard enough to halt play(the fork lift truck being a good example). Graphics and music are also excellent with a great cinematic feel(love the recap when you restart a saved game). Its such a shame that some of the unfairly harsh reviews will put people off, all i can say is try it,i'm sure you'll be as pleasantly surprised as i was. I've cancelled my subs to gamestm mag as a result of their snobbery deserved way better than a 5/10.

Alone in the dark has recieved a bad rap for minor thing that barely matter. yes the controls may be a bit awkward at first but thats no different from resi 4.If you like story driven games full of creative fire weapon and the best fire graphics EVER this is the gamne for you. the game is medium legnth, slowed by a healthy challengingness...ness (i reckon thats a word).I won't forget the killer moment when 5 or 6 zombie monsters came running at me just to run into the circle of petrol i'd layed on the floor and once ignited they were trapped in a ring of fire where i threw gardening implements at them.I got it for £25 which i say is a bit genberous but not very because of the lack ofmultiplayer.

Alone in the Dark is a brilliant game from the moment you start playing. A game with ace visuals and great ideas niggled with a large smattering of glitches and clumsy controls. Its a game some may dislike after all theres no getting away from its clumsy awkward controls and its many glitches. But look beneath those problems and your find an adventure full of mystery and myth. With the whole of central park to discover and roam and those astounding fire effects to put to good use theres a lot of replay value to be had here once you have finished the main story. Personally I would advise you to rent this game before buying just to see if you like it.Alone in the Dark: A flawed masterpiece!
