Welcome to the future, a powerful gun array originally designed to shoot down a meteor is captured by the Eursean military force to gain air supremacy by using it as an anti-aircraft weapon. The Independent States Allied Force (ISAF) has been beaten into a corner with no hope of victory, until now. You and an elite team of fighter pilots are ISAFs last hope of regaining control of the mainland. Do you have what it takes to regain your nations freedom? Follow a gripping storyline through 18 high octane missions and fly some of the worlds greatest fighter jets! This is quite probably my favourite ever game, and I hope that this review explains why. I honestly cannot find a thing wrong with this brilliantly crafted game.Any fan of a previous Ace/Air Combat game will know, the standard of game play is extremely high. Over the years Namco have produced many high quality games for the Playstation and PS2, and Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder is no exception.AC4 incorporates some of the great features from previous releases, but much more has been added to give a massive sense of realism. Examples of this are the gorgeous visuals which are present in every mission you undertake, Vocal commands and comments through the new radio system, extraordinary aircraft detail and very much more. For those of you who are new to the Ace Combat series, here are some examples of features which are included in this and previous releases:-Two player dogfights-Multiple weapons to choose from including "fire and forget" air to air & air to ground missiles, "bunker busting" bombs and the always fun machinegun-Over twenty real world aircraft to fly including the Su37 Super Flanker, F-15, A-10 Tank Buster and many more, all well known and used in the world today.-A brilliant music score with tracks that suit every mission perfectly creating an excellent atmosphere.New features and good points:-The game boasts an engrossing storyline, brought out by wonderfully animated movie sequences and matching audio-18 highly detailed, action filled missions which will provide hours of enjoyment-6 difficulty levels to choose from-5 trial missions to improve your flying skills with-5 tutorial missions for those of you new to the series-The newly added FREE MISSION mode. Similar to the Simulator mode featured in AC3, the free mission mode allows you to play any mission on its own or in, "free flight." Meaning you can enjoy the levels visuals and features and fly anywhere but no enemy units will be present. If you're a fan of the previous Ace Combat series, then this release will more than please, if your new to the genre or the Ace Combat series, then this the perfect game to introduce you it. You will not be disappointed.

Ace Combat 4 was the first Ace Combat game for the PS2 and the mold from which the sequels were created.Depending on your prefences and from which end of the franchise you started, Ace Combat 4 ranges from truly "great" to simply "good".Graphics are good, later games are more detailed but at times it can actually be hard to tell them apart. The soundtracks works well, and while I prefer those found in 5 and Zero, manages to create the right mood for each mission. The game also retains the series's fascination for blending realism with sci-fi super weapons (which is one things that drew to this franchise) and the gameplay is simple enough for anyone to pick up but also satisfyingly exectued. Now,for all the things Ace Combat 4 does right, it also does a few things wrong; The aircraft stats in the hangar is hard to make out thanks to the low-opacity text and busy backdrop, camera-controls behaves oddly (you need to press down the right thumbstick to look behind you), early missions tend to feel a bit too short and while later missions mixes things up a bit, many missions seems to based around the same structure. However, it really comes into it's own towards the end and you can really feel the connection between this and the sequels. If you want to enjoy one of the best air combat game series on the PS2 (or on any other system, for that matter), this is where you should start.

'Best flight sim on the Playstation 2' is a bold statement to make, but in this case, it rings true. Ace Combat 4 is the latest in a long line (well, 4 game long) of arcade flight sims from Namco, producers of classic Playstation titles like the Tekken and Ridge Racer series. With credentials like these, Namco have produced a game that, like Tekken and Ridge Racer, are easy to get into, are playable and yet have a fair amount of depth. The game itself is well presented, with a great deal of detail in the landscapes and the aircraft themselves, though some of the ground units are a little simplistic in appearance. Thanks to the power of the PS2, the game has no problem in creating large scale dogfights spread out over large areas, which become icreasingly exciting and challenging as the game progresses. Added to this is, the 2 player mode offers the player a refreshing change to just carrying out mission after mission. If anything, this game is a little on the short side, but it's great fun while it lasts nonetheless.

The PS2 games library is flooded with beat em ups & driving games, but where are all the flight sims? The console is more than capable of handling the high powered graphics that are demanded by the genre. Therre are a few flight sims out there but they are terrible games, however, we have been granted one true gem, Ace Combat. Having played this game through six times and still wanting to give it another blast is something that i very rarely want to go with any video game. The missions, thoguh few are so good and the range of planes on offer are excellent. Flight dynamics are of the arcade nature so theres no blacking out or G effects. The dogfighting is fast & furious, with good nemy AI and some slick manouevers performed by the computer pilots. I have yet to get my hands on the sequel, Ace Combat Squadron Leader but this older version is so brilliant that i will have to give it another play through before i purchase the new game.

Lets be straight here - this is a almost a brilliant game - easy to fly and kill, but not too easy, realistic handling, superb graphics - GT3 in the air, loads of great planes and weapons, even European ones! BUT - and this is a bigger but than Barry White's - it contains about 3 1/2 hours of gameplay over 18 missions. It either needs to be much harder or much longer. And the difficulty is about right...I finished it in 2 nights on hard, with lots of sightseeing and flying into the ground trying to be flash. If you're used to flight sims (unlike me), or bought dropship first (like me) then rent it, DO NOT BUY IT! - You'll finish it in a weekend. However, if you want just one flying game for the PS2,get this, without a doubt. Its also got an excellent 2 player mode, although co-operative misions would be pretty good - it'd be a miracle to see a plane on your side other than you shoot something down, for a start!

Beware: this is much more an action shooter than it is a flightsimulator. So, no comparison can be made with eg MS Combat Flight Simulator , which is much more technical en detailed. So if you're after complexity, you'd rather turn to your pc. If, however, you're after fast paced dogfights, Ace Combat offers plenty of challenges.Graphics and controls are excellent: no hassles with configurations and a constant 60FPS, often over photo-realistic landscape! In the early missions, the main objectives are easily accomplished, but suddenly I realised that the fighterplane-types that I shoot down in dogfights (secondary objective)during those missions, afterwards can be bought/collected,so you can build up a nice collection of top-notch planes. This GT3-like twist adds lots of replay-value to the game. Missions 1-4 are peanuts... missions 5 to 18 (some say 21) are more challenging and very rewarding.

As a flight sim fan i jumped at the chance to play this on the PS2, as so far i had found nothing to challenge or excite me, until trying this game. The graphics are superb with every detail covered, the aircraft are of a varied choice, but very limited in the weapon capabilities. The game play is fast smooth and easy to operate, with the missions starting off easy and progressing, from dog fights to ground attack runs and then mixing the two togeather.Completing the game was easy in the starting avaible options of difficulty, but completing these unlocks harder levels where only one hit kills you.Saying that as you already know the missions this somewhat distracts in making the game overly challenging as you master the aircraft. All in all worth buying as no other flight sim really exsists, and it is good fun!! which is why we play!

Ace combat blends a mix of great graphics, a cool storyline and brilliant gameplay and pulls it off superbly. The other planes are detailed brilliantly, enemy AI is outstanding and there's tons to do. missions are varied and its not just 'follow plane, shoot down and repeat' but landing on aircraft carriers, escort and rescue missions and exciting dogfights. Levels get harder as you progress through story mode, coupled with amazing cut-scenes. There are tons of planes, mods and weapons to collect and it'll take ages and alot of fun getting them.1 star is lost though because of the awful 2 player mode, in which you are left to shoot down balloons (?)or a boring two-plane shootout.Get Ace Combat 4 for the one player and you won't be disapointed!

I used to own ace combat on the psone , and being a fan of flight simulators I decided to buy thi sas it had the great reviews, the others didn't have. At first the controls are very strange to cope with. Believe me, it will take you a day to fully be able to manouver a craft well, but a learning curve is good. The fast paced gameplay is great as while you take down the infamous, "yellow thirteen" you can hear your comrades speaking to you. The moods are great on all the missions and they are all different from each other, all being linked to the ongoing storyline.Ace combat is definatly the front man in its genre and I recomend this to anyone who knows what an aircraft is.

I don't agree that Ace Combat 5 is better. The replays are far better in Ace Combat 4. In fact, I would recommend getting both without hesitation if you've even a passing fancy for flight sims combat and speed. There's nothing like it on the PC, the graphics are better than any PC sim I've played (and I have them all!) However, if you are a hard core FS addict, you will be disapointed by the un-realistic flight model etc. Overall an essential PS2 owners game. As previously reviewed, worth the money just to watch the replays. Outstanding!

I start this game on NORMAL level and progressively change the level to HARD, EXPERT and ACE on every complete MISSION. Total money currently 5.5 mio current plane is S-37. Awesome GAME well recommended. Eventhough you are first timer. I didn't know this game until one day my brother bought it at UK and even he never complete. Well presently i'm hunting the original series, thinking of getting ACECOMBAT 3.

This Ace Combat Title is the best yet !!..all the reviewers have covered it in great detail, and all i can add to their comments is that this game is excellent and is money well spent.Easy to play, and at times you become totally immersed in this game.I highly commend this game.

15.2.2005

There relly is no other combat flight game on the PS2 as can match Ace Combat 4. It's ease of gameplay and a brilliant array of aircraft and weapons makes it one of the most exciting and contagious games on the PS2 - can't wait until Ace Combat 5 comes out!

7.12.2016

Never played prior, but was a huge fan of ACZ and AC5 so for nostalgia, I brought this for a few quid. Not as enjoyable as the other two games I mentioned, but a classic to complete the classic trio. Worth the money and play through.

19.2.2016

I have loved this game since it came out in 2001, for anyone who enjoy's the combat flight games i would recommend this game as it is absolutely outstanding.
