Ace combat has been the regular flying action game on the Playstation since its humble beginnings on the Playstation 1, as growth in the series continues , the seventh title flys onto the PSP and the first Ace combat game to do so. Released in 2006 the game set out to show that Ace combat would control the skies of whatever console it wanted to.Set in 2020, the land of Aurelia is at peace. Reclining in its wealth of resources and pleasurable climate, the peace is soon broken as a invasion from neighbours, Leasath, engulfs the country in a war. Unarmed and unprepared , Aurelia falls after 10 days and only one small force still remains in a small airfield. Flying in Glyphun sqaudron,it is your job to save the country and restore happiness to the land. The story is good enough and the main motives are clear, the narrative travels at a good pace with the aid of cut-scenes during gaps between levels. If it weren't for the difficult names used for everything important to the story , it would be as easy as the ABC's to follow. The campaign mode takes place in upto 17 missions, as the narrative can change at 3 specific points in the game which limits how many missions happen. This makes the game feel more personal to you, adding to this is the customisation options for aircraft and the ability to be awarded medals for certain actions.Campaign mode has a handful of different mission types to help the story along, whilst many of these are search and destroy missions where you have a certain amount of time to destroy whatever the target is , either ground to air missile launchers or enemy aircraft. Other mission types include, escort, base assaults, playing with instruments jammed and restriction flights (keeping below a certain alltitude or speed). These all generally link with search and destroy so it can soon start feeling a little bit monotonous due to the lack of variety. As you go through the campaign mode you earn money which you can spend on unlockables such as paint or aircraft kit. This makes it more interesting to go back and try missions with an improved aircraft, some of the kit you can get includes more powerful engines, better weapons and improved wings for handling. In addition to the campaign there is arcade mode, which lets you play single missions after unlocking them in the campaign mode.Multiplayer is put into the game with 2 different modes, CO-OP and versus. In CO-OP you and 3 freinds can fight upto 6 enemy aircrafts controlled by AI.In versus mode you can fight against 3 freinds, this is in straight dogfights, base attacks, domination, capture the flag and escort. This mix of modes makes the multiplayer really exciting to play and mean that you can have hours of fun in a smooth running group. I play this with freinds on a regular basis and it's always a clean and polished online experience, definatley one of the top online games for the PSP.Combat is mainly done off of the action buttons and the lock on for attacking enemies is pretty quick, so you don't need to waste any time. As soon as the enemies in site there are the options for missiles or bullets, these aim true and are really effective, although lessons from space invaders shows up and you should remember to aim infront of your target to take in flight time. All the worlds main military planes are available to use with a range of statistics to give the plane a specific feel, some are fast and some are great at handling, it's important to find a nice mix that suits you if you want to survive. 40 planes and 120 weapons make sure their is something for you to go back to and try the missions with a different style of attack. The replay value is increased with the support for playing at different difficultys, it increases the AI and number of enemies as well as the damage your aircraft can take. The increased damage is what makes it the most difficult, as the aircraft are made realistically so one missile will mean it's all over. The AI of your comrades and enemies are both of a good standard and it's good to see the AI getting some kills or a change, the enemies will try to dodge your missiles and attacks with their abilities increasing through the course of the game. The analoug stick of the PSP handles the flight of the plane very well and makes handling it a dream, controlling as well as any home console game. The acceleration and brake on the shoulder buttons helps keep your speed in touch and the plane really has a weight to it.The game looks fantastic with water effects that carress the side of the levels and shimmer in the sunlight. Some of the level rises up into 3D but most of it is flat, you don't notice this too much as your flying at speed and altitide but when your close the flat shape is evident. That's not without saying the detail on buildings and roads are good for the PSP, and overall their is a nice polish over the whole game which makes it fun to play. The game can be quite atmospheric as long as you turn off the rather annoying soundtrack, radio crackle and brief messages boost the excitement and make it feel as though you really are a small group against an army. The sounds of dogfights are engaging with missiles, explosions and sonic booms going off all around and you have to keep reminding yourself this is all coming out of the tiny PSP.Theres probably a good 25 hours available before you get tired of the different planes, the only problem is that the campaign is a bit short and the missions are unvaried.

This surely deserves a 5/5 simply for the lack of other flying games on the PSP, but also in it's own right. I played Ace Combat games on the PS years ago, and this didn't fail to meet up to my high expectations. Sure there are a few annoying things about it, but overall it is simply supreb! The controls are a sinch to master fairly quickly, and the graphics are more than decent all the way, with next to no slow down - except where there are dozens of ground targets all huddled together (but then that can be a blessing in disguise). I'm not one to be fussed about the story-line (I just want the instant flying-action gratification I guess), but even that is ok,and it excels in the fact that you can choose different mission paths to victory. Once you've completed a mission in campaign mode, you can fly it again for fun or practice in free mission mode, increasing your rating (A-C and S - unlock all the Specials, and...), as well as filling your medal cabinet!! It's good to get the expreience too, as this will continue to increase your money which you can use for planes, parts or weapons, which you can then use in your campaign or free missions as you like. You can also gain new colours for your planes (3 colour-types/markings for each plane, I believe), showing your expertise to even greater effect. The gripes with this game are minor, but worth mentioning. The missions have time limits, some of which can be very tight, but you'll get used to it sooner or later. It would have been nice, along with free-mission mode, if there'd been a free-time mode, but then that's just me being greedy for more fly-time I guess! Some of the missions are hard to unlock because you need to play the campaign in a certain order to unlock them, and with so many choices it becomes difficult to remember which routes you've taken. I guess this is also a plus, since it extends the playability / duration of the game. The background music is a bit annoying, but can be turned off, leaving you to enjoy the various sounds of the air, effects, rain and so on. Finally, the Gleipnir, a massive stealthy flying fortress - a nice idea (but devilishly difficult at first) but moving somewhat away from the idea of a pure flying game, I feel, and into the genre of sci-fi. But that's possibly just me trying to get back at the Gleipnir for being initially so hard!! Piece of cake now, of course!!!All in all, a truly superb game well worth your attention, and such a great port to the PSP!! Go rent, borrow, or buy yourself a copy now!!!

Being a huge fan of the Ace Combat series on the PS2 I bought this game with hopes that it would, atleast recreate the feeling the PS2 games gave me.The game is based in the same universe as Ace Combat5, two nations at war etc . etc.First of all, the game looks great, the planes look beautiful, as most action takes place high up the ground detail is very low, but the only time you will see the ground close-up is when your plane is falling from the sky in flames. The controls work well, however, I found the analog stick to be quite irritating but one gets used to the controls. For those wishing to use the D-Pad the option is there to switch, making this game suitable for all players I guess. The story is very well put together,as with any Ace Combat game the voice-over lacks quality but the story flows well and keeps one interested in playing it through to the end.The game is good for those wishing some arcade fun, the missions are sometimes quite long but that shouldn't deter any PSP owner for trying this game out.

Unlike others who have played other titles from the Ace Combat series, I didn't really have any expectations, but I did want a good flying game for my PSP. It was either this one or Pilot Accademy (the only two flying games currently out on PSP), and I chose this one because it was more realistic and less arcade. The story line isn't quite fab, but the flying is lots of fun. Although the missions are hard to start off with, even on the easy setting, you may find yourself in a too-late-to-correct nose dive. You get used to the controls and the general physics laws of flying quite quickly. The AI is very good in this game. Your targets know when they're under threat and respond as any jet-fighter would. Some missions are quite challenging, especially as you're usually under a time limit. So finding targets that don't appear on your radar can be quite difficult. All in all, their are many planes to unlock, many weapons and upgrades to unlock, good and sometimes lenghty missions, and good visual.

I actually have only ever owned this game on psp, I got into it by playing it on the PS2 and others. Well in my time I have tried out many fighter flying games and normal flying games and I always find that there are things that bug me. They have made it almost "to" realistic, so only trained pilots can play it, way to hard. Or either to easy, physics arent great, to repetitive, not realistic enough. The little things that can ruin some games so easily. But Ace Combat hit it perfectly, they got everything right and have continued to do so with all thier flying games. I actually doubted this would work on the PSP but it's brilliant. I highly advise you to get this game, you cant go wrong with it.

Another great game in the Ace Combat series.Be aware, they are pretty much arcade games, not full aircraft simulators, so it's easy to pick up and play.Planes look great, each mission has a nice pace to it. Plenty of difficulty levels for both newcomers to the genre and AC veterans.Plot is (as always, in AC) both crazy and awesome.Voice acting: Pretty good. The baddies can be both hilarious and terrifying. Your support is just as good.Music: Seriously this deserves 5/5 just on its own. Ace Combat music is always fantastic.

ACE COMBAT X. An awesome game thats all there is too it. The PSP is putting together something excellent games now, after people doubting it, this handeld is really starting to shine. ACE COMBAT has you flying a various amount of fighters, some of modern day standards and a few that wouldnt look out of place in a sci-fi television show. The planes fly well. You should get this game if you like previous ACE COMBAT GAMES.

I have played this series before on the PS2 and thought it was the best available. This is no exception. The gameplay is fun and fast paced, although one small niggle is you cant change your view to outside the plane (if you can i cant figure out how to do it!!).There are loads of missions to try, and it never gets too boring. All in all a good buy.

Wicked game. Great missions and well worth a buy for the PSP. Takes no time at all to get on board with the controls and the missions are varied and fun.Love the game and the difficulty can get very hard if you want it to.
