I must say I really didn't expect much from this item. When I bought it, I thought it'd be a bit of quick fun, a two minutes and throw away kind of job. But it turns out it's much more than that! How good it is for child use, I unfortunately cannot say. I myself am somewhat of a big kid, and love science and space. And I loved it. It's easy to do, and you end up with a nice display piece afterwards. Also it comes with awesome glow in the dark paint, which actually illuminates the planets at night time. The paint provided gives you the freedom to paint the planets how you like.Make sure you look carefully at the instructions, to make sure you've put the right planets in the right place! Also be careful what poles you use to stick the planets in,as if you use the wrong ones you won't be able to spin them past each other. Some of the plastic pieces are difficult to extract and put together, probably because this isn't the highest quality item out there. For the price you pay, you really can't go wrong though. A great way to spend an afternoon!Pros: so much fun, glow in the dark and a quality ornament afterCons: Some of the plastic is difficult to separate. Also quite difficult to put the planets together.Overall, highly recommended.

I bought this to make with my grandson,6, who has an interest in the night sky, and he loved it. This definitely needs adult supervision - some of the pieces would not fit together and needed trimming with a Stanley blade, and assembly needs care and to be very methodical. My grandson painted the sun and the planets (after adult mixing of the paint) although Earth is tricky as the seas and land areas need to be different colours. Saturn's rings took a long time to fit as the central hole in the card needs to be cut larger than indicated. There were no English instructions, just two sets of foreign ones, and no wall chart of the solar system as indicated on the box.My grandson did not lose attention for the two hours (in two sessions)that it took to assemble and paint this model, and was very keen to take it home to proudly show it to the rest of the family.

It is a blast to build and learn with this product but do be careful as 'small parts' are included with the planets etc. It went together easily and my kid enjoyed clipping the planets and sun into solid balls, a few didn't seat quite perfect and it did take some effort to remove the plastic 'nubbins' left over from the frame the planets were attached too. The OH helped with the painting side (as I am no picasso!), the instructions did say the paint will stick better if you sand everything slightly (sand paper was included BTW) but we didn't bother and everything went on fine and isn't coming off any time soon. One thing I would say is that it is incredibly easy to disassemble so unless youdecide to glue it together or something it can be taken apart (or explode apart if dropped off a shelf) and then put back together, can't say it isn't robust though ;)

Very accurately moulded and engineered but the Sun and planets are not accurately scaled e.g in real life the Sun is 865,000 miles in diameter and Mercury is only 3,100 i.e. 0.35% of the Sun's dia. But the model shows the Sun at 40mm and Mercury at 12mm and it real life, Saturn is 25 times the diameter of Mercury, so either Saturn must be reduced or Mercury increased in size for display purposes. For a practical display model the orbital distances also have to be reduced enormously a 40mm Sun would place Mercury about 800mm away and if it was to scale Neptune would be 60m away (you would need a bigger house). That said, when painted up, it looks very nice.(I am in the process of installing a more realistic model spanning 250m and even here the planet sizes have to be increased to be practical).

I was concerned this might be a bit rubbish, but it is great. All the bits to prepare, paint and construct is something in itself as a craft project to occupy a child better than a cinema, but on top of that they then have a little solar system all of their own. I had considered getting a pre-made motorised one, but I am glad I didn'tfeels neat to have a 6 year old who knows the order of all the planets just because she held each in her hand and painted it before placing it where it goes. Only problem is I constantly get quizzed on them and I muddle up beyond Mars if it doesn't have ringsgoing to buy more as gifts

Nice looking packaging and reasonable quality product for price. My 6 year old nephew thought this good and assembled with help from his Dad. He was then able to paint it himself. Only problem we found was that it didn't rotate as it should have and never would because Saturn's rings were too big and crashed into other planets.(All other planets OK and could have been solved by making one planet higher or lower if parts had been available) As long as you accept that Saturn needs to be static this is an excellent model of the solar system for interested children.

Spent a happy time this weekend putting this together, supervised by an extremely bright 4 year old! Found it very easy to click the planets together and assemble the stand.Admittedly the painting of the planets is quite fiddly but we solved the problem by using Playdoh to support the planets while I painted them. There is plenty of paint to give good coverage and the finished result was very good, especially when highlighted with the glow paint.Really very good for a child who is fascinated by the Solar System.

Bought this to accompany one, already made from scratch and materials independently sourced by my 8 yr old son, as part of his (UK) cub astronomy badge work. He expertly painted all of the planets, despite their quite small (physical) sizes and overall the product is excellent, save for the very poor fluorescent paint which came with the model. As a consequence the planets, hardly, if at all glow in the dark, which has been a great disappointment ! Please, please please rectify the fluorescent paint !

Very good fun to make. The toy was obviously originally designed with Pluto was a planet and the manufacturer hasn't quite changed all the kit yet - Pluto isn't provided - but there is a pin to attach it and a space on the central column for it. My 10 year-old put it together with minimal help and had great fun painting it - she nearly ran out of the red paint though. It looks fantastic. Highly recommend.

It is a bit fiddly to built - it difficult to dry planets when they are painted without making a mess at least twice and a bit fiddly to put it together because if you press a bit too hard - you have to start from beginning. Luckily kids decided not to give up and they still playing with it.Also i must add one more positive side - it was very useful for school lessons!

This is a good bit of well made kit. The parts are quality and it goes together well. My only niggle is that it would have been useful if the instructions had said which steel rod to use on which planet. That said, with a bit of trial and error we got it sorted relatively quickly. Would recommend it to pass away a couple of hours with your children.

First time round had a missing part, which we didn't discover until sometime after when we came to build it. But this was resolved very fast (next day) with a new item being sent, which was complete and we are currently painting.Excluding the first time, I would recommend this as a good little educational project and my girls are enjoying it.

Didn't read the bit about painting it.... great for a child to have fun but not for an adult who is banned from using paint brushes by my Father...... from a very young age...... was painting a bike and his grass turned blue!!!!!! Oh well practice will make perfect..... great product for education etc

This is a great gift, and its well worth spending an afternoon building your own solar system with your children. However it is very fiddly to put together, especially building and painting some of the smaller planets like Earth.Probably not one for younger children unless they're really patient.

This is a good product for an initial introduction to Orrerys for young children. My four-year old grandson had a whale of a time constructing it with help from this father. It does give some perspective to the planet sizes. A reasonable introduction to the solar system planet arrangement.
