The way the pieces move isn't that hard to learn. The seven year old and the five year old both got it pretty quickly. The problem is one of strategy and tactics. While they both really wanted to play they didn't know exactly why they were moving the pieces and what is was, exactly, they needed to accomplish. Enter this game.Because the cards dictate which piece has to be moved the young player is a bit on auto-pilot. They don't have to look at the board and 16 pieces and decide which one should go somewhere next. The card they draw tells them which piece to move. One guy was very aggressive, opening up on attack. The other was very defensive, making small and closed up moves. They began to see the larger picture, and after a few games they started to develop their own styles and really began to see how you attack and defend the king. It was actually pretty cool to see them "get" the point and flow of the game. We had great fun and made huge strides.I was delighted. Both boys desperately wanted to play chess and I figured this game would do no harm. It is more expensive than a comparable plain lightweight plastic set, but the whole deal with the instruction cards adds a lot of value and benefit. I did not expect this to be so successful, both as a fun game and as a learning tool. One suggestion. Early on a player may get a card for a piece that can't be moved. (Usually, a rook.) The "rules" dictate that the player must then skip his turn. This made no sense to me because losing a turn is a real disadvantage. We play that if you select a card for an unmovable player you select another card until you can move. That worked much better, and maintained the balance between the players.Anyway, the upshot is that this really worked well for us and I enthusiastically recommend this as a solid introduction for youngsters curious about chess.

I have always thought chess is too complicated to teach my son but then my wife bought this for his 6th birthday. I thought it was a waste of money until we started setting up the pieces.First of all the board has 2 sides, a normal one and then one with images and names for all the pieces in their starting positions. You pick a card and this tells you which piece to move, and instructions on what moves they are allowed to do. This takes out the most difficult elements of chess, you don't need the experience to know which piece to play or remember what each piece is allowed to do.Obviously as you start playing your child will learn what each piece can do but this takes the pressure off learningand lets them enjoy straight away.Winning takes more luck that skill which means young children enjoy much more, and as an adult you don't have to let your kid win to make them feel better because they will beat you anyway!

Wonderful introduction to chess for kids. Cards show very clearly how each piece can move, and the picture of a piece on each card lets new players quickly identify which pieces they can move on the board. Playing the level-one instructions, each player draws a card and must move the piece drawn. This is a great way to handicap players who already know the game: who knows whether you'll have to move a trapped rook, then two pawns, then a knight, while your opponent gets to move a freed rook twice and a queen twice. Obviously as players learn the game the randomness can be reduced by letting players pick one card to play from a small hand of held cards, and eventually by eliminating the use of cards and playing normal full chess with the pieces and board.

Bought it for our 4-yo as a Christmas present. She likes it a lot and it makes it possible for her to have an experience of actually playing the game, making her own decisions and strategies without having to consult someone all the time. The logic and system with cards indicating different moves works quite well. It also has the possibility to increase the difficulty level by increasing the amount of players' own decision making in the process. The quality of the actual board and chessmen isn't super high, but seems durable enough. The plastic chessmen are light weight and fall down easily, which isn't ideal for little people's slightly clumsy hands.

I have never bought my grandson a toy which was not educational. For his 7th birthday I found what I thought would be an ideal educator. Little did I know how right I was !! He now eagerly does his homework so that we may play after. Since this game not only educates in chess skill but also introduces an element of 'luck' he's already 'managed' to win me a few games and his improvement in moving the pieces was immediate. Will certainly recommend it for all ages from 7. Good value for money

We love it.. Our child of 4 years and old, my husband and I :) Everynight we are playing... Our child chooses if goes with mum or daddy but he is doing great, sometimes better than me. I did not know either to play before but now thanks to this game I win sometimes to my expert husband. Lot of laughs! A possible tip: sometimes in your turn you cannot move and we decided, against the rules, that then we take another card till we can move.. it make us feel the game is more dynamic.

This is brilliant! Previously, I tried before to teach my 5 years old daughter to play without success! This game is doing the trick. I am not interested to get her to play now, I just want her to familiarize with the board and pieces. She loves playing with me and this is giving us lots of quality time together. Do not forget to let your child win now and then!!!! It is a bit pricey but worth to the last penny!

Brilliant introduction to chess for non players (me included). Played it over Christmas hols with kids ranging from 7 to 13. Some could play already some couldn't but by the end of a few games we all knew the names of the pieces and the moves they were allowed to do, Even the snooty chess playing adults agreed it was a great piece of kit.

Wonderful game that does indeed take the stress out of chess by focusing on how one piece can move at a time, which also throws up obstacles for a more experienced player, leveling the field for a parent-child game. It's a good way to teach chess strategy without the full pressure of choosing which piece to move.

I bought this for my 8 year old and myself and we always love it so much! We only ended up playing with the cards for a few days before he felt comfortable enough to play without them. This really made learning fun and easy. I would highly recommend this for any age that wants to learn!

I’ve used this set for years to teach students, grandchildren, and adults. With the cards lined up in front of them for easy reference, kids can start playing real games within minutes of starting. Suggest starting with one card at a time to introduce pieces, but move quickly to game.

Bought as a gift for my niece (6 years old). Feedback I have received has been very positive with even her mum learning chess for the first time. Excellent way of introduction to chess.
