Having a recognisable name is half the battle when it comes to toys and everyone knows that the best battle cards are Top Trumps. However, how can Top Trumps expand their market beyond selling packets of cards? Rubix did it recently by creating loads of games and toys that have the Rubix name, but are not the cubes. It seems that Top Trumps are after something similar with their Match Games and in this case the 'Disney Princess Top Trumps Match Game'.As a board game of sorts, it is excellent. It feels like a variation on 'Connect 4' but uses cubes to mix up what matches you can find. The players sit opposite one another and take turns putting a cube in trying to get five in a row. This in turn pushes out a cube on the other side and that player has to add this one back in - will it have the Disney Princess they require on one of its six sides? The fact that you can search for so many different characters and choose to try and make your own matches, or sabotage your opponent means that this is a more challenging game than 'Connect 4' and still great fun. The game is 4+, but is more suited for children slightly older as the game itself is best served by someone who can think tactically about their next few moves. As well as being a well thought out game, it is also built exceptionally. The cubes themselves are sturdy and the stickers well attached. Being a Disney IP means that it will appeal to lovers of the characters from Cinderella all the way to the modern day. All the cubes are housed within the game as the perspex sides fold up to keep the game tidy, it really is a well designed piece of kit.The only real issue with the game is the crowbarred nature of the Top Trumps themselves. The official game suggests that you pick two cards each and keep them turned down. When one of you matches five your opponent turns their cards - if they match the Princesses you collected, then they win. You have been Top Trumped. This just does not work, younger children will be devastated that their hard won victory has been stolen, whilst the more aware may feel like they had gained a hollow victory. House rules may have to come into play; either no cards, or how about you pick a card each, don't tell your opponent what you are after and then try and connect 5 with this character - tactics will come into play. Another choice would be to see the two cards you have immediately and play a game where you try to match 5 whilst also tricking your opponent to into picking one of your cards - therefore forcing a Top Trump win.As a rule the cards themselves are probably not needed, but the game itself is great fun and built brilliantly. At least with the cards you can play variations of the game, which should add even more to the fun.

The Top Trumps DC Comics Match Cube Game is presented in a sturdy plastic box that serves as the stand and the storage container. There are fifteen popular DC Comics heroes and heroines; each face of the cube shows a different character. The stand with which one plays is nicely made and there are no rough edges. There is a set of fifteen small cards, one for each of the characters. The game is colourful and visually appealing. The aim is to match five characters in a line, horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Players sit with the stand between them and each plays from his own side. The real game starts when you open the container and look for the How-To-Play Instructions. There are not any provided. The game is not intuitive in how to start, play or end. By dint of digging and searching, I found some instructions online and I am including them here because without them, the game is a non-starter.Once you know how to play, it is a super game, exciting and not too difficult for children whilst being fun enough to engage an adult. We have played it quite a lot and it is very entertaining. I have dropped one star because it needs the missing instructions. How To Play.Load the 25 cubes into the grid. Ensure there are no more than two matching characters in the same line in any direction, on each side of the grid.Shuffle and deal two character cards per player. Place them face down into the card indents. Don’t look at the cards.Player One starts by pushing through the cube at the top left corner on their side of the grid. The cube drops into the playing tray of Player Two.Player Two reinserts the cube into the grid, showing on his own side the character he needs to build a matching line. This pushes out the new playing cube into Player One’s tray.Repeat in turn, selecting the character you are trying to build into a line and pushing out the next cube for your opponent to have his turn. You must not push out the cube that has just been placed. You must make a matched line of five cubes of the same character. When you’ve done that, you shout, ‘Match!’The other Player then turns over his character cards. If either card matches the winning line of five, the card player wins the game. If the cards don’t match the line, the line-maker wins.Tip: Push the cube you are playing into the grid so that it is proud on the other side of the grid. This makes it clear which cube has just been played. Push the cube level when the next play has been made.

Can Top Trumps expand their market beyond selling packets of cards? Top Trump Match Games may just be the solution. 'Fingerlings Match Board Game' is an iteration of this Match Game and uses the brand that anyone with a 5-10 year old will probably be aware of. I know them best from the little surprise packs you can get that contain one of the creatures that wraps around your finger.'Fingerlings Match Board Game' takes the imagery of the brand and puts it onto a variation on 'Connect 4' but uses cubes to mix up what matches you can find. This toy is basically a connect 5 toy. The grid is a 5 by 5 grid with cubes filling the 25 slots. The aim is to get five of one of the characters that appears on one of the faces of the cube in a row either horizontally, diagonally or vertically. This is done on a battleships style board so you can only see your side and don’t know what the other player’s board looks like. You take it in turns to push out a cube and replace it with the one that was pushed out on the turn before. First to get 5 of the same face in a row gets a point. This can be increased to two points if the player’s character in their completed row matches one of the two cards (from 15 possible options)that they were given at the start of the game. Also the opponent can snatch the two points from them if the character of the row completed is on one of their two cards. First to 5 points wins the whole game.If you are buying this and don’t mind which set to get then note that there is variation in price between the different styles available under this product listing. At the time of writing the Candy Crush Saga one was the cheapest. We have the Toy Story 4 one so it features characters such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear on the cubes and cards, characters we are familiar with, whereas the Candy Crush Saga one has candies from the game (and there are multiple other versions also available). The toy is also portable with all the cubes and cards and the board being contained in the board when it is closed, so it can be carried although it doesn’t have a carry handle (so is best carried in a bag).My 5-year-old enjoys this toy very much, although not necessarily playing the game as intended. He likes making rows by himself to match cards he picks, or matching 5 rows at the same time. He is mechanically minded and likes shape so that is partly why he enjoys it so much, but also the game has simple rules so is not too hard for him to play. He gives it 5-stars.

This is a really fun game for two people to play and is great for a bit of family fun. The object of the game is to get 5 characters in a row either diagonally, vertically or horizontally. The game does take a little bit of getting used to and although the ages on the packet say it can be played from age 4, my suspicion is that at this young age the rules may not be strictly adhered to and it may just be fun popping the cubes out and putting them back again. Older children will find more to work with in the game as you do need to think about different elements and have a bit of a plan. We have played this with a 6 year old girl who loved it and really enjoyed being matched against adults. The game itself seems well constructed and is not flimsy in any way.It feels reassuringly heavy and solid which is great because so many games get rough treatment by children it’s good to know this one should withstand quite a beating. The fact that the game packs away nicely into a case you can carry around is great. We have a lot of games in their battered old cardboard boxes held together with bits of tape and the fact that the packaging from this game can be recycled and does not need keeping is great. This also means that you end up with a smaller item to store and that it will be more robust than a cardboard box so it’s less likely to fall apart and risk losing the pieces. As there is a small handle it also makes it portable so you can take it away with you if you are off on holiday etc.At £19 it is a reasonable investment but I would not say is overpriced considering other games on the market.

After my two boys saw the new release of Toy Story 4 they were thrilled to receive this game from Top Trumps. My eldest who is four years old picked up the rules of the game with ease. It is simple enough for him to enjoy, fast paced enough to keep his attention and has enough variations to allow for longer gameplay. My youngest who is a young three and rather boisterous was kept engaged long enough by the game however he obviously didn't understand the rules. This is fine as it does say on the box it is suitable for four plus. But I was happy that he still enjoyed playing with it with help from me.The cubes are a good size for little fingers practicing their dexterity, which I think contributes to the fun for the child too. I think they are a good size to prevent losing them too.The instructions were in simple English. If you read them out loud they would be easily understood by most four and above year olds which is refreshing as some children's games the adult has to read the instructions and then paraphrase for the child. That is not necessary with this game.I really like the portability of the game. It is very light and would make a suitable game to take on holiday or to a restaurant with the kids to allow them to play nicely at the table together. The game is self contained in it's own travel box and it opens up nicely into place without the need to set it up again. The casing and all the components seems durable and long lasting. The only negative point I have to make on this product is the packaging. I do not understand why an instruction book requires ti be wrapped in plastic.

This is a good idea, the game can be played two way, a simple one for younger children and a bit more complicated for older children.Out of the box the game comes ready to play, the design of the game is that there are two plastic covers for either side of the case with a handle at the top for it to be carried. This keeps everything together very nicely and should help avoid bits going missing. This is called a top trumps match game, i think it is more like connect 4 though, the top trumps doesn't really read right with this, there are some cards with this that can be used as part of the game but the top trumps i remember was all about beating someone with better stats on cards. This game reallyis like connect 4 but with a change in that you have all the squares already filled in and you push out the one you would like to change. This is then placed back onto the board. The first person to get a line of 4 wins... unless you use the cards, with these you have two face down in front of you and if you have the card matching the line of the other person then you win.I played both versions with my niece and at the age of 4 she got both of them but preferred the one without the cards... the cards were all laid out in front of her as she looked at the princesses while playing. When playing the game with the cards she thought i was cheating as she had lined up the princesses.Overall I think this is a great game, it is thought out well in the protective case to keep everything together, the game is also simple for young children and doesn't take too long to play so they don't get bored.

Despite the lure of online games, I am pleased to say that there is still a place for board games of all kinds. Aimed at ages 4+ this is both fast, and easy, to play and it looks bright and colourful. This game involves matching five Disney Princess cubes in a row – either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. This is for two players and my daughter and niece were really happy to try this out as they are huge Disney Princess fans.As such, it is a sort of Connect 4 game, but there is a twist to the game at the end involving the cards you are dealt, which makes it a little more interesting for older children (if you are playing with very young children, you could just forget this part of the game to make it easier). The idea is that you push through the cubes until one player gets a row of Princesses. Just make sure that when you set up the game, you do not have two Princesses together in any row. Before you start playing, each child gets two cards. Only once a player gets a row of Princesses, the other player (losing player) turns over their cards. If one of their two cards matches the line of Princesses the other player has made then they can win the game. Obviously, little children may not cope that well with the idea of thinking they have won and then losing, but my daughter is nine and my niece six, so this was a fun twist for them. The pieces are well made and the game sturdy. Overall, a lot of fun and it is a quick game to play, so it will appeal to younger players who find longer board games complicated.

This game using Disney Frozen animated film as a selling medium is near to knots and crosses but using bricks. It comes all in one container like a little suitcase with clear sides to keep everything together, This is also the board that you use to play. The sides fold down to hold some cards and the bricks as you play. For two people who sit on either side of the game. Each block has 8 pictures of the different characters from the film and what each player is trying to do is get 5 blocks with the same picture in a row either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. A larger longer version of knots and crosses. Each player is given two cards from a small pack which you can use at the end to alter the result. The first move is that the top left block is pushed out what ever it happens to be. The player on the opposite side picks it up and then tries to use it to start one of their rows. By pushing this block in it pushes the block out which other player then again tries to built a row, sounds complicated but it's not. The game is indicated as being for 4 plus, I thought 4 the minimum age. Once the the children catch on it became quite competitive between them. Some of the matches lasted a long time others didn't. I thought it was very good and certainly in a bracket above easy board games where you throw a dice and take pot luck. All in the Frozen colours and because it's in Pink most likely played by girls. Nicely presented package.

So I had fairly low expectations of this game, but it has proven to be a big hit. I have wonderful childhood memories of Connect 4 and this game has some similarities, in that you have to make a line - in this case you need to have 5 of the same picture, rather than your own colour and the other player doesn't know which pictures you are going for and where and you play the game by pushing the starting block through at the beginning and then the other player has to push out another block using the first, replacing it and therefore the picture on their side (and therefore on your side too). The game can be quite quick, but often it takes longer than you expect - so some patience is required for the standard game.Ideally you get a line of the characters on one of the cards you have been dealt and you get two points, but if you get a different set of characters, there is a danger that the other player will steal the match and the points - if they have the character as one of their two cards. If they don't, you get a single point. My children take after me and are incredibly competitive and we play a lot of games together. This one has been a big hit and the fingerling characters are cheeky and cute in equal measure, so it's an appealing game to play. Neat to pack up and no need for batteries - always a good thing. This will be perfect for camping trips this summer as an alternative to card games.

My two nephews played this game (with me as referee) they are 7 and 9. The older child is a bad loser and has endless patience. The younger child has no attention span and tends to win everything without even trying or getting bored and wandering off before a game is finished. I ended up playing this game with my oldest nephew!Pros- No batteries required!!- Fairly easy to set up- different versions of the game- Easy to transport- folds up into its own case, which holds all the cubes and cards in place- Although cubes are small pictures are different enough to be easily differentiated, even for a poor old grown up like me!- Easy to play the game on the move, not much space needed.- Dont need to be able to read words to playCons- need good attention span to play, game can go on a bit- younger children might get bored (like my nephew)We actually ended up playing a very funny quick version of the game, in that you had to put the cube back in, in 2 seconds, it got messy but it made us laugh! The normal version of the game can go on a bit but my older nephew is very competitive so wasnt going to give up until he won (he won).Nice game, doesnt take batteries, it would suit anyone that can sit still and concentrate for a while, even adults. Its not a kids game thats going to stretch your patience (like some) it actually does take some planning and brain power (and a dose of luck!)

My daughter aged 7 likes the game, which I could describe as a variation on a marriage between Connect 4 and Battleships. The product itself is robust and well made and can be transported in its own case and kept tidy and in one place for storage. I think the age rating is about right but slightly older players will get more out of if. Younger players may just think the game is about pushing cubes out rather than the objective of getting five cubes in a row.It is a simple game with a slight hint of strategy but in general I don't think little ones will think too much about which cube to push out. Your aim is to get five identical cubes in a row,the opposing player is trying to do the same while you are both trying to stop them winning by pushing cubes out.The Top Trump ‘element’ is that each player has been dealt a card that is kept face down during the game. If you win the cubes in a row or the “Match” you can still be beaten on the turn of the card if the opponents card matches your row and your card does not. At first I thought what’s the point in bothering with getting the cubes in a row if all that winning the game hinges on is ‘chance’.However after playing it and losing three times on the turn of the card I can say it adds to the fun but it is really annoying! It’s good for an hour to while away the time but I am on the fence as to the price of the product.

At first sight, the game board looks rather like Guess Who. The board stands upright, and has a grid of 5x5 square holes, in each of which is a cube; each face of the cube has a different Toy Story character. One player starts the game by pushing out the cube on the top left, and then uses it to push out another cube. You carry on taking turns to push out a cube and putting another in its place until one player wins by getting a line of five of the same character (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). You can simply play it like that, or you can additionally use the pack of cards and deal two to each player; the winner then depends on whether either of you has the same character as the line of five. The cards are small, and good for little fingers; I can see them getting lost over time, so it’s useful that they aren’t essential for play. The game is well-made, stands up well and folds away well (there is a little recess to store the cards), though you have to take care that the cubes don’t fall out of place while you’re folding up the board. It stays put once folded, and you could easily take it away on holiday, though I wouldn’t recommend it for playing while travelling. It includes all the new characters in Toy Story 4, so the branding is justified.Very good value at around £15.Note that it’s not the purely card-based game that the term “Top Trumps” implies.

In an era when practical games are having to compete with TVs and computers, it's good to see the fun and accessible alternative entertainment from Top Trumps. It's a bit like Connect-4 but cranked up a bit to make it more competitive and unpredictable. The idea is to make a row of five matching pictures, but pushing cubes into an upright board, one at a time, pushing out a cube in the process. This is simple back-and-forth gameplay. The skill comes from guessing and remembering what's on the other side of each cube so you don't mistakenly make a row for your opponent, while making a row for yourself. Added to this is a deck of cards, which can be used to add another level of chance to the game. The game folds up into solid blue case with everything tucked inside it. This makes it less likely that bits will disappear, and makes it easily portable. It's not great in a car, as it needs to be on a stable flat surface. The recommended lowest age is 5 years, and we agree. Our grandchildren below that age could push the cubes into place, but they really didn't grasp the strategy and patience required. At £15.90 (June 2018) the price is a bit steep (Connect 4 is about £9). That said, the graphical cubes are a lot more complicated than plain red and yellow disks, so you are are getting more for the money.
