Having bought and played the other two Dawn of war II games this one is colossal improvement, being able to play through an entire campaign for each race is great, and each campaign isnt as short as I first suspected them to be. The story is pretty good for each race and of course the imperial guard being the highlight of the game is just an awesome addition to the series. I was pleased to see that the game goes a bit more towards the RTS it should be, were you can buy any unit you want while on the battlefield instead of having fixed squads for every mission like in the first Dawn of war II.Problems:The controls can be a bit dodgy to handle sometimes when trying to command multiple squads to get into cover, most of the time they will stand there and get blown to bits instead of automatically getting behind the nearest cover without you having to tell them too. I was a little disappointed to find that the units still dont have any kind of collision prohibiter, so basically an entire unit (or multiple units in a small space) can group up into a small space and physically stand inside each other, making an area of effect weapon pretty much kill your entire army of imperial guardsmen in a single shot, and as I stated above, getting each individual unit to quickly get into cover to evade an area of effect weapon is a nightmare when commanding 4 units or so.Vehicles are also still a little bit dodgy on the pathfinding. Unlike most games were you tell a vehicle to go the opposite way its facing, it will turn and head in that direction, but in Dawn of War II, when you tell a vehicle to start heading in the opposite direction its facing, it will literally reverse the entire way, instead of turning around and if you have played the first Dawn of war II you will know that vehicles are significantly weaker when attacked from behind. So yeah, you guessed it, if an enemy appears behind you and you tell your tank to attack it, it will reserve towards the enemy and start shooting at it, leaving its rear completely exposed, resulting in a catastrophic tank fail and a very angry player.Im not much of a multiplayer fan when it comes to RTS games so I suspected at least a satisfactory single player skirmish mode to play on if I finished the campaign, but the AI I witnessed is an abomination, I actually just couldnt believe how absolutely atrocious the skirmish mode AI was. The AI bought a hero unit and occasionally one group of infantry but thats it, all they did was run around the map capturing and recapturing everything in sight, and they used the retreat function at the first sight of combat.Despite these issues, the campaign or campaigns in this games case was fantastic and was the main reason I bought the game, so the bad skirmish mode AI didnt bother me as much as it would on something like a total war game. A good game with its flaws.

Having played the two previous iterations of Dawn of War 2 for an extensive period of time both in single and multiplayer I was rather psyched about Retribution. It holds up well introducing the Imperial Guard, not my favourite of races but still interesting, as well as a host of new units for each of the existing armies. The single player now allows you to pick which race you wish to play as, however I feel this games single player is weaker than the original and its first expansion. I think the multiple race thing may have played a part in this, the story isn't as long or as interesting as the previous two campaigns. It does follow on from previous events but really in order to get the proper story you need to play as the Space Marines. The other races are sort of crowbarred in to the campaign without much story or reason this is particularly evident with Tyranid who don't even have multiple champions so co op is a waste. Co Op is still fun though despite this weaker overall story but I didn't find myself wanting to repeat the same missions with different races past Space Marine and Orks going solo. The multiplayer is still as fast and challenging as ever, despite having played for a long time I still find myself getting my thrashed in 3v3s with my friends as games can be won or lost on small quick decisions. It's a very different style of RTS focusing more on the combat and positioning than base building, it's a welcome change of pace that means there's always bullets flying somewhere on the map. There's barely any downtime even from the start you're rushing to capture victory points which usually leads to skirmishes with opposing players. The multiplayers not for everyone but you'l be happy to know they have relatively fixed the matchmaking meaning as a level 20 I won't get matched up against 3 level 40s.The collector's edition comes with a beautiful case designed to resemble a Blood Raven book, inside you get a nicely sized and good quality poster as well as some art cards. You also receive special wargear for single player which is a nice option to use considering the campaigns length meaning you won't be upgrading gear as much as DOW2 or Chaos Rising. At this price it's a bargain considering the wargear is sold as DLC through steam.Overall if you enjoyed DOW2 and Chaos Rising this is more of the same polished gameplay with an admittedly weaker campaign but you can play as your favourite race so it's a trade-off. But if you enjoyed them I recommend picking this up and at this price the CE is well worth it. If you have never played Dawn of War 2 this is a perfect place to start as you get all the races including all the character for use in Last Stand. But if you want a longer more focused Story whether to play solo or in Co-op you may still want to try out the previous 2 instalments.

THQ sticking to what it knows best and, incidentally, THQ at their best.Lets start with the arrival of the game. Comes in a meaty box with a plastic surround to protect the case. Inside the case is the game disc itself, the manual, a nice big DOWII: Retribution poster and some art cards. Nice.Inseting the game will bring up steam. Yet another steam DRM game, no bother. For those who don't want to download all the files see below, otherwise allow it to download the files.STEP 1. DON'T want to download.- Insert disc and let steam download SOME files, then pause, right click -> delete local content.- Exit steam completetly, leave the disc in tray.- Go to Run- Type: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe -install E:NOTE: C: is the letter of your hard drive and E: is the letter of the DVD drive where the game disc is inserted. For windows Vista and 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) users the path will look like the one below:C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\Steam.exe -install E:- Steam should now restart. Log in and let it install.- When install from disc is complete it will arrive around 90-95% done. The 10 or 15% accounts for updates or other content not on the disc.- When complete. PLAY!THE GAMEGraphics:The graphics haven't really progressed from DOW II: Chaos Rising and DOW II though you can zoom right in on your units and see almost every tiny detail.Gameplay:The gameplay is same old same old. You get a story line dependant upon which race you chose at the start and you follow them through it and accompany some mini-bosses and, predictably, a huge fight at the end which is, sometimes, a complete bitch to win.In this game you have your standard Heroes but you can swap them out for a squad of different troops and an increased population cap. You can also buy new squads and/or tanks when in the battlefield by capturing command post etc.Story:Intricate and detailed. Sadly, its sometimes poorly told by the characters which seem to cheaped it rather than make it deep and immersive.Controls:Quick, simple with virtually no learning curve. Gets more complicated as you use hotkeys etc.Replayability:This game has tons upon tons of replay value as you can select, i think, is one of seven different story lines which you can complete each of them and they are all centered around the different races in the DOW world.Overall:A great game that will keep you entertained for days upon days thanks to the massive campign choice. Everything else is more or less the same as the past two games except now you have heroes and squads to purchase.8.5/10

I don't normally bother writing reviews and stuff but I thought this game justified a few words. If you are a die-hard DOW2 fan then I don't think this release will let you down. If you ain't, then it's the best bunch to start with. I waited for CR to touch down and felt that was too short to get excited about, but thats just my take on it... GW fans probbaly got all excited about chaos n all that. This game has a decent campaign, although I have just started my 2nd race campaign so cant comment on the variation etc between races. This has been said several times already but this is the most varied and best DOW2 to play (honour guard vs characters, different playable races etc).I'm not a net gamer these days (RUBBISH countryside connection n all that!!) so can't say anything about the PVP and Last Stand. It's a lovely looking game, you can see bits of the opposition getting blasted all over the place etc and my i7 runs it flatout (read highest graphics settings), despite only having a GTX260 and 4GB ram (i melted a stick in an outragous overclocking incident). If you aren't running it on mono-core slug it should be ok with some tweaks.Any criticisms... yes... one word... STEAM!!! Having the worlds SLOWEST net connection I was pretty peeved to find steam insisted on me downloading my game that I already had on my shop bought DVD. You'll have people tell you that you can change the way Steam installs (from disc not net) but I couldn't, despite knowing the differences between my elbow and other parts, and had to wait for 7+GB to download at 32kbps. I get a bit hacked with being messed about for ACTUALLY buying a disc 'cause I dont wanna download and then having too anyway... I REALLY MISS my fibre... bellwire is rubbish!!All-in-all, my personal experiences with Steam aside, a DAMN GOOD CRACK and worth 25quid for hours of explosive fun!!

If you've played and loved the original Dawn of War II, possibly even the tiny campaign of Chaos Rising, you probably know what to expect from this game, and it doesn't disappoint!Despite the relatively short shelf life of the solo campaigns, its really online this game shines. Having switched from windows live to steam (sorry guys, no gamer card achievements, only steam ones!) valve gives us a new map and commander for Last Stand, as well as new wargear for all heroes in the recent free updates (unlockable through steam achievements). The multiplayer is as fast paced and fun as normal, with imperial guard joining the playable races, and each gaining a new 'super-heavy'unit.The faction campaigns are fun the first couple of times, but with 6 campaigns all having the same missions, its really only the voice acting that keeps the solo game alive. A tip from me, leave the story rich Space marine campaign (especially if you're a fan of the series!) and the humour of the Ork solo game till last to give you the motivation to try all 6.***DoW II original and chaos rising spoiler***The Blood Raven solo campaign of retribution's only real letdown is it doesn't tie into the chaos rising 'influence' themed endings - It naturally assumes the not-quite-chaotic-but-not-pure happy medium ending, with your commander in exile after a certain devistator is revealed as the traitor, so don't be surprised to see traitor techmarine martellus alongside possessed librarian Jonas, with a few more firendly faces...

The latest expansion to a great franchise, Retribution packs a campaign playable by six races. Unfortunately, I prefer Relic's previous approach, with much more focused campaigns, even if at the cost of race diversity.Nevertheless the campaign is great fun, especially for those strategy gamers that like to play with lots of toys. Tons of units, heroes, abilities, it definitely has quantity, even if somewhat less quality. The greatest improvement is the drop of GFWL and going full Steamworks. This means multiplayer is a much smoother experience. The Last Stand has improved, with an additional arena and hero, and is as addictive as ever. Great, relaxing fun with friends. If you want something a bit more heated, the classic online mode is better than ever, now with the inclusion of super units like the mythic Baneblade or the powerful Land Raider. Every race has one, and they can be real game changers. The game, however, remains hard to approach by new comers. It requires some dedication at first, but it definitely pays off, providing some of the most tense games I've ever played.

In a nutshell, Retribution takes the established gameplay from DoW2 and the Chaos Rising expansion and prunes them down, then lets you play it with other races. All of the hook here is being able to play the same campaign with the different races - Eldar, Space Marines, Tyrannids, Imperial Guard, Chaos and Orks. As you can imagine, all of the races have different abilities and power-ups, and using these is largely the attraction. The campaign storyline itself consists of maybe 5-7 hours per playthrough, so there's a decent amount of gameplay on offer here by choosing a new race to do it with, even though the actual progression of the storyline is a lot shorter than the other two titles.Your "hero" characters, for example, are finished levelling-up at stage 10, rather than 20 in the first game and 30 in the expansion - so you've got to be a lot more choosy about the upgrades and bonuses you pick.Pleasingly, however, you can now have much larger squads compared with the 10 people or so you have in the first two titles, and you can requisition vehicles too now.

First, a confession: I love Warhammer 40k and it was the Dawn of War II that won me over. I had tried the original DoW before but found it derivative, however DoW II charmed me.Now, about Retribution: it has 6 campaigns, one for each of the factions (Space Marines, Chaos, Tyranids, Imperial Guard, Orks and Eldar). The downside is that they are essentially the same campaign: every campaign uses the same maps, what changes is the order of some of the missions or that some missions that are optional for the other factions may be mandatory for one. That being said, I played through 4 of the campaigns to completion because I enjoyed the game so much.If you haven't played Dawn of War II yet but are interested in Warhammer 40k or strategy games,I'd advise you to try the DoW II gold edition first (which includes the magnificent Chaos Rising expansion) and then consider Retribution. If you played DoW II or Chaos Rising and would like more of the same, then Retribution is right up your alley

For Dawn Of War fans this is an absolute must. Not only does it bring another popular race to the table - the Imperial Guard - but adds a number of new units to the existing races to add to the slaughter. The campaign is good fun (even better with a friend thanks to co-op) but now you can play it with the race of your choosing. Multiplayer is still brutal and unforgiving as ever, so if that's not your cup of tea then there is still the brilliant The Last Stand mode to satiate your online requirements. It's worth mentioning that the Collectors Edition comes with special war gear for each race, normally available as paid DLC on Steam so it comes at a bargain price on Amazon. Also Relic have ditched Games For Windows Live in favour of the Steam overlay which makes inviting friends a much easier task.Overall a brilliant addition to the Dawn Of War franchise, crafted with the passion and dedication you'd expect from a top developer. Nice one, Relic.

Needless to say, if you're a fan of the Dawn of War series, then you'll love this.As the box will tell you, you now have the option of 6 playable races. I, personally, have started with the Orks. The game play has had a few modifications, so it's not quite 'the same game' as the other two, it now borrows from the multiplayer. The campaign keeps the 4 "Champions" that you deploy with at the start of the mission, however you can opt to replace these with Honour Guard units. These aren't the only units you can use on the field, however. You have a population cap, and can obtain requesition (Requesition has replaced the items in breakable containers, so it seems to be a set amount of req per map)with the requesition you can make further units to use whilst on that map.I find it gives the game new life and increases the strategy involved to overcome the enemies.I am absolutely loving this game and would strongly recommend it to any RTS fan!

I'll keep this short and sweet. This is a great game and the online options are highly addictive. The leveling rewards alone will keep you interested for a long time. The downfall like Dawn of War 2, and Chaos Rising, is the offline campaign mode is far too short. Although you do have the option to play this out through 5 other races. The truth is if you're a fan, like myself of the Warhammer series you will not care that the game is short lived you'll play it over and over, as it looks and feels great.HINT: If at the main menu you get a nasty pink/purple back round not to fear. Go into options and run a graphics test and save the settings. Its not a system fault but a the game running at too higher spec. This works on all the Dawn of War 2 games.

A must-buy for every THQ fan, every strategy fan and every dawn of war fan.The game itself is awesome, not only the campaign is amazingly fun, you'll want to do it for every race but also on harder difficulties and try different things.Secondly the multiplayer feels really fresh and unique, it's amazing. You've also got the last stand mode, which became even more populated since the mode became a stand-alone game.Secondly, since it's limited edition you'll get all that awesome stuff including the poster which is freaking amazing! So yeah, totally happy with this, IT'S AWESOOOOOOOME!

LOVE IT!!!Being a big fan of the previous Dawn of War 2's I was really looking forward to playing the other races in the campaign, and im yet to be disappointed! I love how the campaign follows roughly the same story line, and how you can choose 6 different outcomes for the sub-sector! BRILLIANT!!The new paint scheme editor is really useful how you can take a look at all the units and see what they are like in your colour scheme. And the graphics just make it brilliant!Overall then, best game I've bought in ages!!

3.9.2011

Great game, good campaign choices and storylines, and the multiplayer options are improved from the earlier Dow 2 versions. It no longer runs through windows live which is good for gameplay and online play, in addition there is the selection of several new armies and maps to play with. overall a good game to piss around on or to take seriously, if you like the other DoW titles i reccomend giving it a go
