There have been a great number of Transformers games over the years, some, such as the 'War for/Fall of Cybertron' series, or the 'Transformers: Armada' game back on the PS1 were pretty good, others, such as anything associated with the Michael Bay movies, were pretty dreadful. What there hasn't been however in more than 30 years of Transformers is a game that really reproduced the style and tone of the early 'Generation 1' animated series. The wait for such a game, I am glad to announce, is finally over!Based directly on the cartoon that debuted way back in 1984, 'Transformers Devastation' hits all of the key-notes of that series. The story involves a nefarious plot by the maniacal Megatron to 'cyberform'the planet Earth in order to transform it into a metallic planet much like the Transformers home world Cybertron - with lethal consequences for its human inhabitants of course. You take the role of the heroic Autobots, charged with the task of stopping Megatron, and to this end you take control of five different Autobots - leader Optimus Prime, Dinobot Grimlock, crack-pot inventor Wheeljack, hot-headed warrior Sideswipe, and the physically weak but immensly brave Bumblebee. Each Autobot is distinctly different enough to give you a valid reason to dedicate plenty of game-time to each of them, whilst not being so distinctive that you have to completely re learn the controls every time you change character. Grimlock is a classic brawler, Bumblebee is weak but uses his evasive ability to hit and run, Sideswipe uses speed to his advantage, Wheeljack uses gagets and inventions to win the day, and Optimus probably straddles the line between the various styles.Graphically the game is an excellent, almost perfect recreation of the Generation 1 animated series. Each character looks every bit the picture of their animated counterparts. Each carries their signature weapons - such as Primes Ion blaster and energon axe, or Sidewipes flamethrower - and transformation sequences are brilliantly done. On the downside terrain and backgrounds are somewhat basic in design, but its a trifling complaint. The game also nails the sound effects. Producers Platinum Games have gone to lengths to secure the services of a number of the cartoons original voice cast, such as Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Dan Gilvezen (Bumblebee), Michael Bell (Sideswipe, Scrapper), Greg Berger (Grimlock, Long Haul) and Frank Welker (Megatron, Soundwave). Music is provided by Vince Dicola - who did most of the instrumental scores for the Transformers animated movie (although the theme tune for the game leaves a lot to be desired and could have really benefited from some version of the original theme tune) - and the game nails the sound effects of Transformation, blasters, explosions etc.In terms of game play the game is basically on rails and is comprised of moving down a number of corridor-like city streets where there is a degree of light exploration in order to discover new weapons, collectibles and pick-ups. There are also the occasional tips of the hat to the animated cartoon located around the game (keep your eyes open early on for a certain tiny electrical menace from the animated series!) You then reach what are essentially a number of 'arenas' where you must combat a series of enemies. Usually these are Decepticon 'warriors' - generally ground based robots that can transform into cars and have the appearance of the 'Cons Runabout and Runamuck, or flying 'seeker' style warriors that have the appearance of the likes of Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust. There are also other generic enemies, such as a 'Sergeant' who can provide boosts to other 'cons, or 'massive 'brute' style enemies. The real pay off however is when you periodically meet one of the big-name Decepticons in combat. This is pretty much a who's-who of the Generation 1 Decepticon roster, including Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker, the Inscecticons, Soundwave (and several of his casettes), the Constructicons (individually and in their combined form of Devastator), the Stunticons, Blitzwing, Shockwave, and of course Megatron. What Transformers:Devastation really excels at is how it incorporates transformation into every aspect of game. You can transform at will at any point, but transformation is central - in fact essential for success - in combat with most combinations ending with you transforming to ram, smash or crush your enemies. Failing to make the best of both of your modes will almost definately lead to failure. The Decepticons pleasingly have the same ability which makes for some interesting duels, and even bog-standard foes have a habit of transforming in order to try a different avenue of attack when you least expect it. It is truly the first Transformers game to make transformation absolutely crucial to how it is played. There are some sections of the game that seek to mix things up a little, including racing sections (such as one in which you must pursue Megatron fleeing on the back of Long Haul whilst he throws energon cubes into you path to try and stop you), and 2D side-scrolling sections (including one in which you have to pursue Blitzwing across a bridge, trying to bring his jet mode down whilst avoiding obsticles and leaping gaps). These sections in fairness do not always work, and some of them can be unnecessary distractions, but for the most part they do add an extra dimension.Between missions you can visit the Ark (the Autobots crashed spaceship and home). Here you can use Autobot inventor and scientist Wheeljack to combine the various items of loot you have collected during you missions into even more potent boosts for your characters. This is done in a mini game with a familiar 'swing-o-meter' in which you must stop the moving bar in the sweet-spot to get the best result. You can buy and sell weapons from the store, or 'synthesize' weapons by combining them to create a better one. Sadly this is the part of the game that fails the worst, mainly due to the fact that out of the ten to twenty or so weapons you might pick up in a level, the chances of finding one better than the one you are already using is slim, and combining weapons in the lab pretty much seems like a crap-shoot.Apart from this there is very little wrong with the game. For sure it would have been nice to have a bigger roster of playable characters - with Autobots like Jazz, Trailbreaker, Hound and Mirage having abilities that seem tailor made for a game of this sort - and with no sign of additional characters set to become available as DLC - apart from new skins that let you play as Red Alert, Goldbug and Nemesis Prime (but really, who cares about any of them?) - this is a bit of a let down. The game is also very short - about five or six hours - and with pretty much nothing in terms of additional play modes theres not much reason to come back once you complete it.Overall however this is the game that every Generation 1 fan has dreamt of, and if successful I can imagine that the franchise will correct what little mistakes it made here and will only go on to bigger and better things in light of the massive number of characters and library of source material available to its producers.

I love this game. I gave up playing computer games a few years ago. When I heard about this game coming out, (being a complete and utter Transformers superfan), I knew I would be buying this game eventually. The artwork is purposely in the G1 format (I loved the Transformers when generation 1 was just know as Transformers). I was afraid that with my expectations being sky high the game could not possible deliver on everything. YES it defiantly did the game is AWSOME.You have a choice to play some of the G1 favorites, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheel Jack, Grimlock and of course Optimus Prime. There are modernized touches like you can upgrade the robots vanquished opponents tech as well as from weapon caches. The storyline and artwork is awesome. The only thing I can find that I had a problem with (but this could definitely be put down to my year away from gaming), is the camera angles seem to change at the worst possible time for me, they are always adjustable, but that is it from me. The action in the game is incredible. Here is an example of a fight combo. You can block, dodge, strike and shoot. Combo example 4 strikes, Transform for a vehicle strike, then rush attack and vehicle strike the next opponent, if you are fast enough then lock on and shoot the next opponent. Love it. I like the modernisation touch where you can upgrade with beaten opponents weapons (they are robots after all). Original fans will recognise many of the relics and a couple of the from Transformers Prime as well.Right now I have a competition with my 8 year old, (he love it as well though he has never seen G1), who can finish it first. All in all if you are a Transformers fan get this to simply relive the original magic. I love it.

I loved this game. Few points to note that may help you decide.- Its inspired by the 80s cartoon and features the voice talents if original Optimus Prime and Megatron- unlike many Transformers games this one is much more combat based than a shooter. It features quick evades, combos and rankings for fights as well as a slow down when you evade making it bery similar to Bayonetta (made by the same company). The combat is awesome and addictive. You do use guns and these are well implemented but aren't the meat of the combat.- to break up the combat arena type battles there are driving sections, platforming and a top down level which is fantastic but short.- upgrades and weapon upgrades got knockedin reviews but I love the upgrades to weapons which remind me of Darksiders 2 with the sacrificing weapons to strengthen another.- you cant be Deceptacons in this game. Its all about the Autobots. You play as Prime, bubblebee, wheeljack, grimlock and another. All are cars or trucks besides Grimlock whose a TRex.- when you transform the noise is the iconic 80s sound.- its not open world but between battles you can explore the areas to s degree and drive round to find collectables.- story is gripping and well scripted.I loved this game. It is short but that is reflected in the price. However Id rather play a short tight game than a long dragging padded out dull game.Hopefully some dlc will come soon for more Autobots as Id love to see Jazz and Ironhide.

As a standalone game Transformers Devastation is a 3/5 stars solid arcade-style brawler. The combos flow and are nicely animated. The waves of enemies come in standard types; heavy, fast, flying etc. Your weapons and vital statistics can be updated as you progress. However the environments do feel limited with much of the game playing out in the same cityscape. As a homage to the much loved Generation 1 era of Transformers; absolutely 5/5 stars as Activision have captured it perfectly. The character models, the voice acting, the plot and even small details like the weapons are very much in keeping with Generation 1. It's also great how transforming is included as the pinnacle of the combos.Playable Autobots include Bumblebee, Grimlock, Optimus Prime, Sideswipe and Wheeljack.Overall and on balance; 4/5 stars.

the games art style is the biggest draw of the game as well as the original voice cast from the Transformers G1 cartoon,as for the game play its quick paced and very responsive but will eventually become tedious as to it's repetitiveness, the story is incredibly weak, the crafting system is somewhat pointlessand the playable cast is very short - upon seeing the large selection of Decepticons you get to fight your left wanting to see more of the Autobots to, compared the (5) you get to play as Optimus prime, Bumble bee, Wheel jack, Side swipe and Grimlock. The game is pretty short in general,it's a fun fast paced beat em up with first person shooting included.give it a go you may enjoy it

Bought this game not expecting much from it.only to find i was completely blown away the only way to describe this is asuras wrath meets dragonball z with plenty of shooting.it allows you to upgrade weapons with hundred of different ones to pick from.dual wield wrenches pistols swords axes and sniper rifles to name a few.any transformer fan will love and the classic characters had a nostalgic feel to it.the movie games dont hold a candle to this highly reccommend.story a little short but action will keep you coming back for more with over 30 challenges to complete as well as cool story.

it's a good game but i was let down at how many characters you can play... you get to play 5 transformers. the gameplay and controls are awesome, really nice controls in vehicle and bot mode. lots of little extras but are only available at certain parts to collect. would of been nicer if the game was a fully open world which could of been done or at least more transformers to play as.it is a fun game but don't expect too much from it. i also do recommend this game, it is the best transformers game ever made.

This game is amazing, it probably appeals more to the older generation of transformers fans, who grew up in the 80's. but it also stays true to idw's current comics. Great story mode, although a little short, the games main drive is maxing out the characters and finding high rank weapons. The one downside is that true rng style loot drops don't work, this is why destiny got patched. Same thing happened with diablo3. It's great, but don't expect to unlock that SS rank solar beam rifle anytime soon.

I really enjoyed playing this version of Transformers. For anyone who is a G1 fan this is a perfect game, Well thought out and made to look like the cartoons we grew up with. The transformations are cool to watch and they have 5 autobots that you can play as.The space fights are a little trippy though so be prepared to be frustrated especially on starscream.I hope there is a follow on game in the works.

Wow what a game! My little one plays on this and loves it. I get dragged in on it because it's too hard for him, so I get a break from the other half so it means I am less likely to get in trouble for not listening. I can't complain. Well I can because it's not the greatest of games but I supposed it's fighting and transformers so it gets a pass. Other half gets peace and quiet too.

Good game.Transformers games are a mixed bag. Devastation is not up there with the two Cybertron games, but its still a fun game. Anyway, the online reviews and videos will tell you a lot more about the game than I can, so take a look and if you like what you see, its a good price (or was when I bought it).

Finally, all my gaming dream's have come true. From removing the polythene wrap I was beaming with joy. The graphic's are amazing, the voice acting is superb and the gameplay is crazy but exellent.Transformers Devastation is the best Transformers game I have ever played.

Haven't actually opened this yet (Xmas present) but I purchased because my son has played the demo on ps4 and after that he really wanted it so obviously I got it for him but luckily he has a ps3 the ps4 is his dads so it was a brilliant price too.

28.12.2015

If you like the combat of Bayonetta and Vanquish, then get this game. But it was kinda short though. Its a shame there is no multiplayer because there are group battles, where the autobots (controlled by the AI) are fighting togther.

5.5.2016

Bought as a gift for a big fan of Transformers. They loved the game and at less than £7 to buy it was also superb value. He said the one thing it's missing is online co-op/multiplayer modes, but other than that, very happy.
