As a secondary maths teacher I was frustrated that the standard scientific calculators confuse the students with features they will not need and they seem to always get such in modes they know nothing about. This is disastrous for students who are using all their cognitive power understand the maths. They don't need another thing in their maths lesson to be afraid of. So as my daughter is off to secondary school I looked for a simple one for her and I'm very happy with this one.The physical design if great. The buttons press with a pleasing click. The case is small and feels high quality. The display is clear. I only wish it were solar powered, but I have no idea how long the battery will last. The functions are plenty for higher GCSE and A level, although the outstanding A-level student will probably want a good graphical calculator. It's simple entry of calculations encourages splitting calculations into single steps using equal signs after each step, which encourages proper learning of the orders of operations. The most common functions are all on the face of the buttons with very few requiring a shift button.

I like these Texas Instrument calculators. I had one back in '85 but it eventually packed up so I bought another one which was solar powered. That was difficult to use at home during the evenings as the 'solar power' didn't always providea display under lower light levels, so I purchased this one which is battery powered and solved the problem. I have given 4 stars instead of 5 due to the fact that I can't remove the protective case that comes with it and which will have to come off to change the batteries in due course. I'll (hopefully) prise it apart with a lever of sorts but it'll last a few yearsbefore then and I don't want to risk damaging it right now. Regarding fractions, it finishes them off.For instance it will show 1-1/12th rather than 13/12ths for an answer which the Classwhizz FX-991EX does.* I think I prefer this calculator for that reason, although it is not as powerful.* Correction....the Classwiz will show 1/2+7/12 = 13/12ths or 1-1/12ths or 1.083333333 and back again by using the S-D and shift buttons. Apologies for wrong info.

Smart old-school calculator, with similar functions to the ones I had when I was at school 30+ years ago. Does fractional arithmetic too!Note: Mine came with German packaging (the actual calculator is English though) and a German/French/Dutch/Italian manual, so you have to download the PDF manual from: https://education.ti.com/en/us/guidebook/search/scientific-calculatorsI tried taking the back off to see how easy it would be to change the battery, but after taking the screws out it was still held together with plastic lugs. Without pictorial instructions I didn't want to force it and break it, so I'll wait until the battery is dying. That way I'll at least have had the use of it (many years no doubt)if I do break it.Four stars only because of the difficulty changing the battery and not explaining how to take it apart in the manual.

I used this calculator to pass a technical radio exam. Obviously, I didn't need all the functions this calculator provides, but it had everything I needed for my exam. I had purchased a different calculator before this and found it was missing some basic functions, such as 1/X and X^Y etc. This calculator has these functions. My only criticism is the lack of functionality using the ENG button, it doesn't allow you to move backwards and forwards through the different x10^x options, it only allows one press of the ENG button. One good function is the 3 memory stores, it will allow you to store values in Sto1,Sto2 and Sto3 and also recall any of them when needed.I have no major concerns with this calculator.

I had one of these models when I did GCSE maths back in the 1990's. I only got rid of the original one I had because I could not get the back off to change the battery. I like this model because the layout and functions are very easy to understand and the display is very clear. The only thing I do not like with this new model is that the buttons are made of plastic rather than rubber, but I think it's because the original one I had did have rubber buttons so the mind does not like change. I am very pleased with this calculator.

I wanted a calculator that had a few more functions than a basic machine, particularly one that used the proper order of calculation (MDAS etc). I also wanted one with a reciprocal function for easy calculations involving electronics. This calculator is just the job- cheap effective and seemingly quite robust. It arrived within days and was well packaged against knocks and drops. It does the job and has a case which protects it when not in use/Dellighted

I had a TI-30 during my University studies (Mechanical Engineering-Machine Building Technology), in the 80's, and it was for me the best pocket calculator. This one, TI30XA works fine, it is a great successor of the famous TI-30. It was a student limerick in my times, "At Strength of Materials you want to pass, buy a TI-30" - it has rimes in my native language. LOL, now, no one needs Strength of Materials.....

My old TI solar calculator having finally developed arthritic keys after many years of sterling service ,I bought this as a replacement.I really miss the old "K"button for performing repeat calculations using a constant, essential for my work, but apart from that it seems to be a good value calculator for everyday use with good-sized keys being a plus-point.

Nothing fancy, just everything you need for an engineers calculator.Quick and easy to use, designed with a good understanding of the most common features required for quick calculations. If I want to do anything more complex, I write a program on a computer.

I bought this calculator for my son for maths lessons and it is almost perfect. The only (slight) problem is that the symbols for the second functions of the buttons are a little difficult to read.

12.12.2012

very good calculator, easy to read buttons, pi, 1/x, x square & root x are buttons on their own, not 2nd functions, none of the junk that many scientific calculators are loaded with

This is a wonderful calculator because it is so simple to use. I had an eco version before that ran on light, and the numbers and decimal point were easier to see. Thanks TI!

Bought to replace my old one which broke. I like this model as it is easy to use. There are more hi-tech ones on the market but are not as intuitive.

I used this type of calculator at school already to I stick to it - still does the job as required.

It has a good range of functions on it and is contained in a case which helps the keys keep clean.
