This calculator, released in January 2019, is Casio's replacement for the fx 85 GT Plus, which has been the most popular calculator for GCSE Maths in the UK for some years. The new version has many similarities to the old, including its overall size and most functionality. The differences are (1) the carbon fibre look of the front, (2) an improved, larger and higher resolution display, (3) a faster processor, (4) 14 more functions, mostly statistics-related, and (5) tweaks to the configuration options including menus. It is still powered by the combination of a solar cell and a 2032 battery.Casio has also released the similar, and generally slightly cheaper, fx-83 GTX calculator, which differs only in that it has no solar panel, and uses 2 AA batteries. All the other functionality is identical, so this review can be considered to cover that calculator too.Note that this calculator is *not* suitable for A level Maths, which now requires some additional statistics functions in a calculator. Get the Casio fx-991EX or a graphics calculator for A level Maths. The fx-95 GTX is still fine for A level science subjects requiring a calculator. At university level, it's hard to generalise, but this calculator can be recommended for many courses that require one. What is the competition like? Casio's own fx-991EX has a number of additional functions and is suitable for A level Maths too (as mentioned above) and is allowed by all the exam boards for GCSE, although not all schools seem to have got the memo on this. The other mainstream manufacturers of suitable calculators for GCSE are Sharp and Texas Instruments, each of which have various decent models. While I love my HP calculators, they are not very competitive in this particular market. You probably do not want to buy a GCSE scientific calculator from anybody other than the first 3 manufacturers listed: there are very basic, even cheaper, scientific calculators around which are almost invariably a false economy.Casio dominates the GCSE calculator market with good reason. They produce robust cheap calculators with just the right level of functionality. I can see no reason why this new model wouldn't be the new best seller. In summary, if you already have a Casio fx-85GT Plus (or fx-83GT Plus) there's no urgent need to upgrade to this new one. But if you are buying a calculator for GCSE Maths for the first time, or replacing a lost one, this is the safe choice, and will be absolutely ubiquitous before long.

As always from Casio, they never fail to make brilliant calculators!Throughout my academic career, I have always used Casio calculators, particularly the older “FX-83GT” model during my GCSE & A-Level Exams. Now in university, I decided to invest in a brand new calculator, this time choosing the newer “FX-85GTX” mode with a solar panel, hopefully making it last longer.Upon quick arrival, the calculator is packed very well, in a nice, compact box.It comes with a nice shell which matches the colour of the calculator to protect it when not in use, like the original! The calculator itself is very nice also! I like the newer dark grey colour, as opposed to the lighter grey colour of the older model. In addition, the pink ‘ALPHA’ buttons are a nice touch! It comes with all the essential functions that would be required in GCSE, A Level and Higher Education exams (excluding A Level and Higher Mathematics, obviously).Overall, I would definitely recommend this product, especially for such a low price (at the time of this review it was £11.00)!

First thing here my calculator has been sent to Timbuktu IE it's lost Amazon don't care .It's been sorted ,problem that was 4 days ago and I don't have this calculator and 3 other stationary items .It took One day to send it from Dunfermline warehouse to London suburbs I stay in Falkirk after.3 days still no sign of my calculator .it's on its way no information just a lousy £5 insult compensation .Review of calculator it's Japanese and not British crap that's good news .Craftsmanship is excellent and should get a school girl her maths Qualifications.Easy to see buttons Black model that is .It's Green IE solar powered.Casio is market leader for this product and is user friendly not like Amazon's poor customer service (pathetic)Epilogue have cancelled offending order and ordered a more expensive Casio model plus more stationary .So to Amazons credit things are moving in a much better direction .But room for improvement etc

Going into University, it was a shock to find out that they had a set range of allowed Calculators and my old calculator wasn't a part of it! So I had to get this, thinking it would take me another few months to get used to it and start using it efficiently during an examination, but - I was wrong! Casio's consistent format of calculators makes this product very easy to use and get used to, within weeks! Though I felt as if the price could be a little cheaper considering this one had fewer features than my old one - it still works well! The battery was never an issue as it's solar-powered, makes it a great tool to use for the long-term. Overall, Satisified with the quality of this product.

I got this for an electrcians course which covers some complex maths, all of which this calculator can do. Lightweight and slim when out of the case. Slightly longer than previous models to accommodate the bigger solar panel. The best feature is the digit seperation which displays 100000 as 100 000 which is ideal for working out if something is watts or kilowatts etc... without having to count all the digits which saves time in exams. It also seems to calculate big calculations quicker than older model. The only negative is the The display digit are smaller than old one but a more readable font so not all bad.

I was advised to buy this model by my math's teacher as it contains all the necessary functions required for the examination. Must admit it looks great, though I think it'll take a bit of getting used to as the buttons are arranged slightly differently from my old one, which didn't have the surds function. This model does, along with a host of others compared to my previous model.I opted for the dual powered version in the hope that the battery will last longer. Though I don't know whether it will. Hoping it has a long life and can absorb the occasional drop to the floor.I hope you find my review helpful.

Casio fx-85GTX Scientific Calculator, Black. £2 cheaper than Tesco & delivered to the door with Prime.Only comes with a small manual which only details basic functions. One has to go to the Casio web site to download the full manual. There are some useful tutorials for this model and the similar one that uses AAA batteries rather than solar cell, on youtube, which detail some of the clever functions of the calculator. The screen is easy to read for young eyes, it is a shame they do not make similar model with a larger backlight screen. They have TFT display models, but they are silly money.

It’s really cool and all the girls look at me and go “Damn what a man, he’s so sexy with that calculator” and I go “yeah that’s me *winking emoji*” and yeah it’s really cool. When I wipe it hurts and the buttons scratch my bum but it gets enough poo off that I can live with it.Unfortunately the frame rate can dip in some more hardcore lessons when the maths gets extreme. This can be frustrating.Overall this product makes me question what I’m doing with my life because I’ll never be as amazing as it. This calculator stole my wife and my heart.

If you're thinking about buying this calculator then get it. It's a great piece of instrument for either in the classroom or out in the field doing complicated measurements and solving formulas such as in my work as an engineer. There is no doubt it can be daunting to operate and so many options and menus that you probably won't need half of them, but it great they are there just in case at this purchase price. It comes with an in-depth reader manual to help you get the best out of the device. You won't regret buying one.

My son has progressed into the kind of maths you need a calculator for. I didn't want to bewilder him with the greatest calculator available, or for the calculator to distract from the task in hand, so I went for the "standard" model that has all the features you need for GCSE and as few extra bells and whistles as possible. This is much more sophisticated than the "standard" Casio calculators that were used when I was at school (I'm not that old, honest) but it made the job of teaching him maths easy.

I bought this for a University module in Maths and it is ideal. The calculator is simple to use, once you get used to the multiple functions it has to offer, and the dual power mode (battery and solar power) means that there is plenty of life in the product. The display is nice and clear and the results are interchangeable, making it perfect for all types of comples calculations. This calculator is also valid for all exams in the UK, so is a good value product for both course work and exams.

I am in my first year at university studying mathematics and this calculator looks good, is easy to use and (importantly) is on most universities approved calculator lists. It was annoying having to buy a scientific calculator when I had a brilliant Casio graphical calculator from Sixth Form but I wouldn't be able to take it into exams. I would definitely recommend getting this solar-powered version as I haven't had any issue with power and haven't had to spend money on batteries.

9.3.2019

This calculator is reasonably easy to use. It was my first scientific calculator and I needed to do a free course from Open University to get familiar with it (although that course uses a slightly different Casio model). The only area of difficulty is the memory function which I didn't find straightforward - but that might have been a failure on my part rather than on the calculator. It's brilliant for working out things like compound interest and other mathematical challenges.

I got this as an upgrade from the Casio Fx- 83GT PLUS. The Fx- 85GTX has many similarities to the old one including the same button layout in the front but the main difference is the new improved display which is much clearer than the old model and the menu feature which is very useful. The only downside is that i feel the build quality isn't as robust as the old model but other than that its great! I would recommend to anyone who is doing their GCSE maths.

2.11.2020

This calculator is made for GCSEs and equivalent qualifications. The improved display makes it feel very new and there are extra functionalities over the previous model. The larger solar panel on the calculator will definitely extend its life-span, and the battery on its own should last over 4 years anyway.I only wished these calculators did not look as similar as Casio's other models such as the fx-991EX which I had mistaken for this calculator.
