After an extra four month wait behind the NA release last November, Stella Glow finally hits the UK & rest of the EU. Has it been worth the long wait? Well, after receiving my copy on Wednesday & sinking in around five hours, I can say that without a doubt, it truly has been.Stella Glow is very much an SRPG in the same light as the Fire Emblem series - controlling a set of characters on a grid like battlefield, selecting weapons/skills to use & which enemies to face & battle against along with a top notch story & fantastic cast of characters to go with. Many fans of the genre will say that the Fire Emblems series, especially Awakening (& Fates now to those in NA) is regarded as one, if not,the best SRPG to date across all consoles. I only jumped into said series with Awakening & I thoroughly enjoyed the 120 hours I put into the game & agree with most of the high praise for it. However after receiving my copy of Stella Glow & playing the first five hours, I honestly think Fire Emblem has finally met its match, even surpassed in some areas.Stella Glow follows the story of Alto & Lisette, two teens whose lives turn upside down one morning upon witnessing the destruction ('crystallization') of their home town Mithira & it's folk by the Black Witch of Destruction, Hilda & her followers, the Harbingers. After being rescued by the 9th Royal Guard Regiment, they are taken back to the capital where they are tasked by the Queen to find & recruit several witches to their cause & defeat Hilda & her army in order to save the world before it is too late. That's the short gist of it but to say any more would be spoiling it. The story is honestly fantastic, far far better than it sounds - with its wonderful cast of characters, absolutely beautiful VA (the songs throughout are sung in Japanese but go incredibly well with the English VA) & fantastic writing, laugh out loud hilarious at times too. This is probably the first game in a long time that genuinely made me care about its characters, their emotions, feelings, their stories & struggles. The 3d effect is nice & subtle (similar to the Etrian Odyssey series) but regardless if you have the 3d effect on or off, this is undoubtedly one of the most visually stunning games on the system, from the presentation of the royal capital, lush battlefields, towns & settlements to the night/day settings & it's character portraits. In between the story missions, you are given an allocated amount of 'free time' where you can explore the city. Here you select from a list in a similar fashion to the Etrian Odyssey series where you can:+ Head to the barracks & spend time bonding with your fellow knights & friends.+ Undertake side quests & jobs for money, items & exp.+ Buy new armour & weapons as well as stock up on items for later on.+ Take a stroll through the wilderness which sometimes may prove fortunate with an item or two. (May though)(There are several more options but I haven't progressed far enough yet to unlock 'em). You can't fit everything in your free time so choosing wisely before the story moves on to the next stage is key, especially given how some of the games endings are based upon how & who you spend your free time with (what level of bonding certain characters are at for example). Think of them as the social links from the Persona series, 4G in particular. There is soo much to say about this gem of a game but I feel I could be here a long long time writing if I did so. I feel that it's one of those games you simply just have to experience. There is a demo on the 3ds eshop which I highly recommend which takes you through the first hour or so of the game, showing the beginning of Alto & Lisettes story & the destruction of their town by the Witch Hilda.Overall:+ Drop dead gorgeous visuals+ Beautiful VA+ Deeply engrossing & captivating story+ Extremly likable & genuinely fantastic cast of characters+ Interesting 'Witch Tuning' mechanic to increase bonds+ Two save slots+ Literally hours upon hours upon hours of content+ New game plus+ Multiple endings, both good & bad (& secret)- Movement is slightly clunkier compared to FE but you get used to it fairly quicklyStella Glow is a beautiful masterpiece, undoubtedly one of the very best on the 3ds & stands toe to toe with the FE series, giving fierce competition for the genres crown. Whilst many will be excited & looking forward to Birthright & Conquest in May, I highly recommend SRPG fans & newcomers alike take a chance on this game, even at its current price. One rare gem that will certainly live long in the memory.

In the beginning this game seemed very average, and so I had to force myself to play for the first few chapters of the story. However, it really picked up once you started to care about the characters. I must say the best part are the final few chapters, and I was surprised how serious the game became (given the light-hearted impression I got from the first chapters).Pros:1. Wonderful synchronisation of many scenes2. A diverse cast of characters almost all of which I grew to like (although some are much more useful in battle than others!)3. For those who enjoy coupling up characters: the main hero can basically choose his romance with any of the witches.4.A nice main character (I have too often been forced to play some sexist and annoying main character). He is quite bland, but you can see why the girls would like him, which is a plus.5. Well developed female characters, the story itself is only slightly sexist in parts (the design however is another story, more below).6. Wonderful music, I enjoyed it even though I'm not usually a fan of J-pop.7. Unique Free-time/mission-time system, which divides up the game-play and keeps things interesting (but make sure you do not waste your free-time on unimportant things during your first play-through!)8. Perfect difficulty-level: Almost no levelling required as experience scales with levels, making it easy to keep even the characters you rarely use ready for battle at most times.Cons:1. Beware of A LOT of dialogue, even more than something like Bravely Default. However, if you enjoy this kind of thing, it really adds to the development of the characters, which to me made it much better than Fire Emblem2. Could have done with some anime-cutscenes, or at least more added images. Especially when a scene is meant to be dramatic a few extra images would have been nice to add to the atmosphere. The locations and backgrounds are plentiful, but the emotions displayed by the images of characters were quite limited, given the amount of dialogue.3. Did ALL of the witches have to fall in love with the main character? I know its part of the game that you get to choose, but I felt it somewhat undermined the witches as characters, especially since they are so well developed otherwise. The gameplay somehow tended to reduce them to parts of a harem, and not characters in their own right. But again, this is more part of the game-design and not the story itself, which is mostly independent of your relationships with the witches.4. The design of the game and characters, while mostly cute and pretty, is also clearly designed for a male player. Some character designs are obscene and ridiculous, so much so that i had trouble bringing myself to use the characters in battle! Nonoka is probably the most objectified character I have EVER seen in a game (you can't even see her face, she is LITERALLY reduced to her giant breasts!). This really took me out of the gameplay several times, because I was so offended by it - I feel like the story is very appealing for female players, and so it was endlessly annoying to me that the game still assumed I was a straight male! Further, in addition to the characters being objectified, there are some annoying implicit messages in the game. For example, when you go to tune a witch, you are asked "which girl you desire", clearly the whole thing is meant to evoke ideas of a brothel. When you finish tuning you are congratulated on your "technique". Disgusting! Again, this reduces the witches to objects to be "tuned", and thereby rescued by the straight male player, and the game itself becomes a thinly veiled metaphor for sex! And all that only because they added some unnecessary voice-overs! If you can bring yourself to look beyond this, I can promise that the story itself is largely unaffected by the design of it all. But I felt I should warn you all in detail about this, even though some may perceive these things as much less offensive than I do.

Stella Glow has an artwork style similar to that seen in the Etrian Odyssey series, especially the dialogue scenes between characters, but a set of game mechanics that will be very familiar to anyone who played the Luminous Arc (LA) series on the original DS (same studio). I'd call it an amalgam of LA 2 & 3, but with far more animated scenes that wouldn't look out of place in a TV series. The background art in general is gorgeous. It does have new twists on some of the features you'd see in LA, such as gems having to be inserted into weapons instead of being carried in inventory, you're told when you'll have free time/combat time in advance, friendship activities are time specific, and displaying the objectives required for bonus mission rewards (check bottom screen); and the witches provide a free orb in tuning missions subject to you correctly answering their questions (tip: they glow after each right answer). It is highly advisable to play the new game + to get the second possible ending(only money transfers over tho). The game is story rich, so expect long sections explaining what's going on in the world. The main downside is that if you're repeating a section due to a mission failure the skip button doesn't really skip. It's more of a fast forward for dialogue; to truly skip the scene press the start button. The other niggles I have are: the awkwardness of equipping the gems (I expected to just touch part of the lower screen, not play find a small menu); some crafting materials are unusable but can be sold; and that you can't use the stylus to do anything in battle mode, as the upper screen is where the action takes places. The lower screen acts a minor menu in battle. Also due to the manual being very light on details you will need the tutorials to understand some of the options. The game makes use of play coins - currency earned by walking around with your DS on idle. The only thing I can't answer is why Bubu, a small but long eared pig is in the corner of the loading screen.

This game mixes great SRPG gameplay with an excellent story (believe me, you won't see the plot twists coming), a likeable and engaging cast and great music (which is a big focus since you can use songs to affect the flow of battle). All in all a great game, definitely worth playing.

One of the best Strategy RPGs of recent years. If you have any fond memories of these games or of Fire Emblem or FF tactics then you need this game or you're doing yourself a disservice.
