I've waggled a lot of joysticks in my time. This one gave me arm ache after 5 mins of playing a game. The designers seem to have thought 'so, people want clicky joysticks? We'll give them clicky!' and selected super loud, high activation force microswitches. The stick is just too stiff to play anything with any accuracy. Out of the box, the stick of the C64 microswitched joystick feels a bit better to me.However I will be keeping this stick and returning the C64 one, because it's quite easy to open this one up and replace the microswitches with something that has a lower activation force, such as Cherry D44X. Some easy soldering, and a bit of tab bending of one of the new switches is all that is required. The buttons use the same microswitches, and don't feel great. As another reviewer mentioned, you have to press them 'dead centre' to get them to respond, and the force required again is too great for anything that requires rapid button presses. Changing the microswitches would hopefully improve this, but I'm planning to fit 30mm Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons, although that will require some cutting of the plastic shell to get them to fit.So in conclusion, this stick could have been, and still can be great. But it's getting quite expensive at £25 then another £6-10 on new microswitches just to make it useable. I think these companies are over-thinking these sticks, when they could just use Sanwa-clone style sticks and buttons, which would also give the option for people to easily swap bits out for a stiffer or looser feel.

Ordered this as wanted to have an authentic experience using WinUAE and WinVice64. I have an Amiga and use my Zipstik or Competition Pro with it.. and at first I tried to find an adapter that would allow me to use these joysticks on my laptop.. However, I saw the new and improved version of the Speedlink USB Competition pro and thought I'd give it a go.It arrived in a lovely little box.. the joystick is sturdy and nicely made.. most important, though, it has the satisfying click of a high quality microswitch joystick.. in fact, I was surprised at how hardy it was.. as I am used to the loosened-over-time joysticks I own for my Amiga. I plugged it in and it recognised right away (Windows 10 64-bit)and it came up as an option under controllers in WinUAE and WinVice.Using it is a dream.. it functions perfectly and is SOOOOOOOOOooooo much better than using either keyboard or an Xbox 360 controller. It also has 4 INDEPEDENT buttons, meaning you can play modern, retro styled indie games too!It also comes with 20 free games.. a code is provided to download them from the Speedlink site. I have not done this yet so can't comment on their quality, but they look like graphical revamped versions of classics like trailblazer and IK+.If you want a classic joystick for your PC then this is the answer!!

I grew up in the 80s in the UK with the Spectrum 48k + 2A, Atari STE, CPC6128, and Amiga 1200. Fast forward to the early 2000s and having moved to the US I reacquired these machines and purchased an original Competition Pro to game with. A few years ago I sold all the systems and moved to emulation on a raspberry pi, still using the same joystick with a usb adapter. The problem was that there is only one button and the joystick is almost 25 years old which meant some movements or button presses did not respond. This new joystick is something that solves those problems and I am so happy with it. I now have 4 programmable buttons and the responsiveness is phenomenal. It's solid and well built. The microswitches are on point and have an excellent click sound. This is what you want over the new "The C64 mini microswitch joystick" that just came out. I tried it and the shaft was too short and the extra buttons get in the way.I'm so happy with the purchase of the SPEEDLINK SL-650212-BKRD Competition PRO EXTRA USB Joystick - Anniversary Edition, Retro-Arcade-Stick, schwarz-rot

For some time I've been using a modern gamepad for emulating the C64, Amiga and Mame. This is all well and good, but for a more 'authentic' feel, I needed an old style controller. Having owned a Competition Pro back in the 8-bit days, this was a no brainer. I use mine with Windows, I've not yet tested it with Andriod. Plugged in, let Windows set it up and I was all set. Works great in WinVice and Mame. The stick and the buttons feel high quality, with the satisfying clicking that comes from a microswitch controller. This is also a very good controller to buy if you have the C64 Mini as it is much better than the controller that comes included in the box.For Mame, I suggest you rotate the controller 90 degrees, with either the buttons on the right or the left and change the stick settings accordingly, otherwise, it will be very difficult to use all four of the buttons.

This joystick is just what I was looking for to relive some epic teenage gaming moments. It has a great look and feel about it and worked straight out of the box on my Windows 10 PC and didn't require set up or calibration in my emulator (other than setting it to port 1 or 2).The good news is that for those who have been frustrated by the seemingly non-existent download of the 20 games advertised (if you follow the included instructions), I can confirm that they are available to download by visiting https://www.speedlink.com/COMPETITION-PRO-EXTRA-USB-Joystick-black-red/SL-650212-BKRD and scrolling down to the section called "Highlight" ,there you will find a red link to the 25 game package!Very pleased so far by the quality of the joystick and am certainly not going to be testing it out anytime soon on any of the infamous joystick-thrashing games of yesteryear.

I don't normally write reviews but I thought this might be useful. I purchased the excellent TheC64 Maxi so I could leap back into the mid 80s. Unfortunately like many people I found that the included joystick was somewhat disappointing. I spent longer than I wanted to looking for a replacement and eventually settled on this one. This is much better made than TheC64 one and most importantly doesn't stick and works with all the games I have tried it with so far apart from a download of Manic Miner, I'm sure I'll find another version soon! You still need the original TheC64 joystick to access some menus on the system as this joystick doesn't have enough buttons for that. Overall though this is worth every penny,it will transform your game play and make them much more enjoyable.

I've been looking for a joystick to go with my Spectrum Next, which uses a nine pin Atari style connector. Decent new joysticks with Atari connectors are hard to find. The alternative is to buy an old one from an auction site but these are usually decades old and can be badly worn. Instead I decided to go for a new stick. This one comes with a USB connection but it is a fairly simple matter to convert it to a nine pin connector. I used a nine pin extension cable, which are available for three or four pounds, and replaced the the USB connector. I am very pleased with the result. I have a brand new, nine pin joystick with modern switches and excellent build quality.I've even been using it on my Atari VCS console in place of the original Atari joystick

Nice looking and fits in well with RetroPi/PiMega/AmiBerry setup to relive past gaming experiences.Took some fiddling about to get it working on the Raspberry Pi.Looking at /dev/input I could see js0 and test it using jstest js0 successfully but it would not be recognised within the emulators. It seems that the gamecontrollerdb.txt file on most distributions does not cover this joystick. (The exact location varies on emulator, distribution, image etc.) To get it working I had to edit the file and add the following line at the end of the Linux section.03000000790000001c18000011010000,SPEEDLINK COMPETITION PRO Game Controller forAndroid,a:b0,back:b4,lefttrigger:b3,leftx:a0,lefty:a1,start:b1,platform:Linux,

I was never a fan of the real competition pros growing up. Holding them for any length of time gave me cramp and the need to use two hands meant they were no good for games that also required keys. Both of these problems still exist (it may be possible to map the secondary buttons, but they're poorly positioned), but somehow I don't care anymore. It just seems right to use this when playing 8-bit retro games, and the cramp isn't as bad with adult hands. The build quality of the joystick itself is first rate. The microswitches are responsive and there's no lag which I've had with other models when using OSX. Now if only they'd make a QuickShot II Turbo.

In the 80's I ended up with a few joysticks in my time, the Quickshot II leafspring, and a Kempston leaf swich. These needed constant re-adjustment and disassembly. I had always craved the microswitched Kempston which was at the time much more expensive and well outside my pocket money range. This USB incarnation is plug and play, as long as there is a a USB input. Works out the box with WIndows 10 and works perfectly with RetroPi. I have two of these joysticks, the second one has converted to a the Atari standard (warning, this will void the warranty!) Go on, treat yourself.

This joystick ?️ is exactly like the one I had growing up when I had my Amiga 500. It doesn't seem to like my usb hub but it does work brilliantly plugged directly into my laptop. I have fedora Linux installed on my laptop and this joystick ?️ just worked right out of the box. No drivers to install. I have been using it with an Amiga emulator and have been playing old Amiga games. Rick Dangerous, Great Giana Sisters, Bomberman etc... I even managed to drag my 8 year old daughter away from Roblox to play these retro games. Best buy I have had in ages.

Well I'm back in the 1980's with this product, it is a perfect recreation of the joystick that I was using back in the day. I wanted to use the joystick with some emulators that I have for the ZX Spectrum and it works perfectly with everything that I have used it with. On the PC I use "ZX Spin", for the Raspberry Pi I'm using "FUSE" and I have a Bare Metal Emulator "zxbaremulator" the only thing to mention is that the fire button can be differently assigned for the same game on the different emulators.

Very happy with the Speedlink Joystick, if you have a C64 mini with latest FW get this one, you won't regret it.What I AM disappointed with is that I paid full price for a product that's been clearly used, or at least the box it came in was brutally opened by someone. The product was for sure a return by previous customer the way the box looked, not a brand new from the factory as I expected. NOT GOOD!

I had the original Kempston Competition Pro Joystick back in the 80’s and this is a near perfect version of that. The microswitches have that reassuring click of quality. It all feels and responds just how I remember. I have ordered another so that the retro night I have with an old friend can be totally authentic. The added bonus is that it works with my C64 Mini after the mini was upgraded to V1.2.

I got this joystick so I can plug it into my PC so I can relive those days of playing "Space Harrier" which came out in 1986 on the Atari st520. Now I can play this with excitement. As a bonus I didn't know you could play another 20 games with the joystick. That's just awesome.Super fast delivery b4 it's time, excellent service too. Thank you to those that shipped it out.
