"Space Hulk: Deathwing" is a first person shooter set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and based upon the principles of the classic table top game as you navigate your way around the maze of corridors and wide open spaces of a massive Genestealer inhabited space hulk that has been spewed out of the warp, part of which is revealed to be a Dark Angels craft which may contain ancient lost artifacts from prior to the Age of Heresy. You play the role of a Dark Angels Librarian - a fierce warrior in your own right but also imbued with psykic powers that allow you to smite your enemies with fire, force, and lightning and part of the famous Deathwing company of the chapter who have earned the honor and prestige to wear the mighty Terminator tactical battle armour.Accompanying you into battle are a squad of two fellow Terminators that can be chosen from any of fiveThe game is split up into a number of missions, each of which represent you navigating through one small part of the larger space hulk. Missions are objective driven and usually require you to complete tasks such as escorting your squad safely to a location, activating long-dormant systems, destroying a specific threat, or establishing a bridgehead by holding a specific area until reinforcements arrive.Prior to each mission you enter the armory where you can equip all members of your squad with the weaponry of your choice, choose your psykic abilities, or customise your squads appearance, and whilst initially your options will be very limited, progressing through the game unlocks new weapons and abilities for you to choose from. The range of weaponry is impressive, and as you might expect all of the most iconic Terminator weapons will eventually be available for you to play with. Whilst you start with the choice of only the ubiquitous Storm Bolter and either a Power Fist or Force Sword, you will soon unlock the likes of the Assault Cannon, Plasma Cannon, Heavy Flamer, and Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield. Each weapon has it's own unique stats for things like rate of fire, ammo capacity, armour penetration, and accuracy, and each weapon comes with it's own strengths and weaknesses. The likes of the Storm Bolter and Assault Cannon for example are prone to jamming (a very frustrating feature of the original board game) requiring you to take time to clear the blockage, whilst the Plasma Cannon can overheat rendering it temporarily useless. As well as having a full range of death-dealing weaponry to rely on, you can also fall back on more subtle skills. Doors can be locked and sealed to prevent Genestealers attacking you from the sides and rear, and blocked dorrs can be unlocked through the use of hacking. Alternatively doors can just be destroyed with your power fist, which is quick and easy but prevents their tactical use in the future.Additionally you will encounter a number of stationary weapons turrets that once formed part of the ships internal defences which can be enabled (thus helping clear a room of enemies on your behalf), disabled (to prevent them attacking your squad), or hacked (allowing you to take direct forst-person control of their targeting.Of course navigating a space hulk is hardly a walk in the park, and opposing you will be the full range of Genestealer variants. Almost-human Hybrids are capable of attacking you from range with a variety of light and heavy weaponry and some possess psykic powers. Genestealers are the basic enemy close combat troop and are both fast and tough. Stalkers attack via the use of stealth, scramble your radar and are very hard to hit. Warriors are Genestealers that also have a potent ranged acid attack. Scythe Strain are able to soak up huge amounts of your fire whilst still dealing out murderous close combat attacks. Finally, the Broodlord is the master of all the lesser strains and is not only incredibly difficult to kill but can use both powerful close combat and psykic attacks.Whilst individual enemies pose little threat they commonly prefer full-on wave attacks as they attempt to get into close combat range where they can rend you apart with their razor sharp claws, can and do attack simultaneously from multiple directions, and often launch surprise attacks from things like air ducts, pipes, and vents. This makes the use of tactics and doing things such as closing off potential avenues of attack, using the terrain to your advantage, and funneling enemies into bottle necks crucial to your success. After each mission you will be awarded a number of "fervor" points that is determined by your performance - things like collecting minor relics, enemies killed, doors hacked, number of head shots etc. These can be spent on upgrading your character and his squad with new perks that make them deadlier and tougher.Graphically the game hardly stretches the capabilities of the console, but visuals are functional if not exceptional. sound effects are a little more impressive as each of your weapons has a suitably meaty sound to it, and the cries and howls of approaching Genestealers will give you more than a few of those Aliens "I've got signals, I've got movement. In front and behind!" moments. In terms of problems the game is not without some issues. Whilst much improved from the initial release, there are still some problems with screen lag and occasional freezing especially in multi-player games. There's some long loading screens, controls can be a little clunky at times, your squad mates have a habit of getting in your line of sight, and I noticed the occasional issue with collision detection in relation to close combat attacks with attacks not contacting despite clearly being within range.Whilst occasionally frustrating I didn't find any of these problems deal breakers and 99% of the time the game operates exactly as expected, leaving you with a pretty solid and tense FPS experience in a dark and foreboding battle ground that will ramp up your anxiety levels to the max.7/10
