I needed to dye a white long but very light and fine lawn cotton shirt and chose this brand because the colour - Caribbean turquoise - was the closest to what I wanted so I decided to risk it despite the negative reviews.Although the packet seemed to be only in German I discovered after I'd used the dye that there was a small leaflet of instructions in English right in the bottom of the box which would have meant less internet searching if I'd found it before.I have a fairly new washing machine so I was a little concerned about whether there'd be enough water to stop the blotching so many people had mentioned. I was also concerned with the tiny hole that the dye was to come out of but decided to risk it.I did cut the salt bag much lower than the line stated though, just above the salt, making it more like a cup. The dress had already been washed clean without conditioner so I put it in dry and put the dye bottle and fixative carefully on top, set the machine to 40 easy care which is what they state it needs and switched it on. The dye came out of the tiny hole immediately, in fact I was shocked at how fast the water turned Caribbean turquoise, so I left the machine to it and hoped.I gave it a second wash with detergent when the cycle had finished and it came out perfectly. The dye was completely even and the colour was only very slightly paler than the packet. But it was only one very light long shirt and nothing else. I imagine to get deeper colour or if you're dying anything heavier you'll need multiple packets. I could have used two as it came as a twin pack, but I figured the material was so light I wouldn't need to and I didn't.Given how much more ecological and non toxic it is than the main competitor I was very impressed all round even if you can dye far less at once with one pack. If I was, say, dyeing jeans, I'd use at least two packets for a single pair. I can't see it easily covering a throw to the right colour without multiple packets and of course it won't dye synthetic materials as it clearly says. But for cotton or linen this brand will definitely be my go to in future. I love the colour.I did have to wipe the door rim down but that's the same with any dye.

I am sick of dodgy reviews that people have been paid forI have not been paid for this review so it honest and truthfulI am a bloke I don’t read instructions but they weren’t in English and so small I would need a magnifying glass to read them.I bought a gillet on a auction site which was quite washed out of colour ( it didn’t really matter only used for dog walking)As it was very light I knew it would get dirty quickly.I had used dye before but never this brand.I thought I would give it a go nothing to loose. After reading the reviews I picked up a couple of pointers.1.The salt bag you need to cut lower so it well open up.Other brands you just add salt in the drum.2.The hole in the little bottle of dye does not let the dye out quick enough, so it causes uneven colour.I pierced several holes into the lid to allow the dye to mix quickerAfter a hour on the wash I took out the gillet and checked it over. The colour was even all over no patches.I did notice the stitching was slightly lighter ( which I expected) as the thread would of been a cotton mix, but it really doesn’t look bad at all.I did take a picture but I don’t think you can tell too much from it.To sum up cut well below the line they tell you to cutMake a few more hole in the lid of the dye.Don’t overload the washing machine.A little common sense is required

I have used simplicol machine dyes 4 times (different colours) in the last year. As long as care is taken to follow the instructions e.g items cotton or of other natural origin, weighed (dried weight), washed and spun first no conditioner etc etc I have found them v easy to use. Yes, the washing machine rubber ring gets stained (wipe it down before you dye and again as soon as you can after the process). No I wouldn't do a white wash as my next proper wash 'just in case'. Yes, their colour guidance is pretty spot-on (check dylon 'mango orange' photos if you want an example of two very different colour oranges - from the same pack it would seem! Of no use to the dyer at all..)I am now in the marketplace again for dye. I shall stick with simplicol... P.S one problem that applies to ANY dye. If the stitching on your garment is a polycotton blend (often) that will not dye to the depth of colour that the rest of your garment does. It's v annoying but there's little you can do about it. Should it be 100% polyester stitching (common again) then it won't dye at all and you'll have original colour stitching (white?) with, say, a dark blue material.. Frustrating.

I've used this dye, just put the dry fabric in the washing machine, I put in just over 700 gm of fabric (the instructions say 600 gm for best results) and the white cotton has come out exactly the colour on the box. It was very easy to use, Other machine dyes that I have used have said to put damp clothes in to dye, Simplicol does not specify this which makes it easier, although it does say to wash before use if the fabric has had fabric conditioner used on it, I guess that this may prevent penetration of the dye. The plastic bottle of dye just has to have the top taken off and the whole thing goes in the machine on top of the fabric, along with the packet of salt which just needs to have the top of the packet cut open.I set my washing machine for a regular 40 degree wash (no pre-wash) and like I said, i'm very happy with the results. A quick wash recommended after dyeing to make sure no residue on the fabric or the machine. There is no chemical smell and the dye is non toxic.I will certainly buy this product again.

I have used fabric dye many times, first time for this brand. Really pleased with the result. My daughter completely ruined some yellow towels by putting them in a dark wash so ordered slate grey. Used one packet for 2 towels ( one large and one small). In my experience you should not overload the machine. There were two pale yellow blotchy towels, one peach and one white hand towel. There were a couple of marks on the hand towel but considering that they were going to be binned I'm very happy. I think the bad reviews are more than likely user error. You must use a wash that is long enough for the dye and fixer to empty. The items must be washed to get out and fabric conditioner.Read the instructions people!

I used this to redye a cream cotton dress I had attempted to dye violet with a Dylon 'pod'. Unfortunately the Dylon dye hadn't fully dissolved so I was left with a violet dress covered in blue speckles of various shades. Tried a dye remover but that had no impact at all so I decided to try making it darker. The Simplicol dye was much, much easier to use and quicker because it works in a 40 degree easy care cycle. The result was slightly darker than I had anticipated (hence the four stars) but it is completely even and I can wear the dress again. Washing machine just needed a run on a short cycle afterwards to make sure it was clear of residue. Would definitely use this again.

Bought this as a cheaper alternative to buying a new throw for my bedroom. I had a patchy old lilac throw which was used for picnics and was destined for the bin.The dye kit was very easy, take off a bottle lid and snip a sachet, put everything in the wash and let it do the work. The colour has come out much better than I hoped for, it’s not patchy at all.The cotton was a bit stiff after drying, not sure if it was due to the treatment or drying it on the washing line but I’ve rectified by putting back through on a quick wash with some softener and half drying in the tumble dryer then finishing on the washing line.I would 100% buy again in future

Unfortunately Simplicol have chosen to copy *ahem* another brand by supplying a plastic container to put in the washing machine alongside the clothes to be dyed. The dye is excellent, the colours vivid and long-lasting, but the single use plastic bottle is an unforgiveable retrograde step. Not only the environmental concerns but one must listen to it clang and bang around in the washing machine drum for two hours while the programme completes. Who thought this was a good idea? Well it isn't. I'm very disappointed, even though the product itself is excellent, the lack of eco-friendliness is such a let down.

First off beware, instructions say use two boxes per load, I didn't know this until I came to dye the items I wanted to colour so I had to buy a second box. Pack contains 1 packet of dye and 1 bottle of colour fixer. Easy and straightforward to use and I am happy with the results on most of the dyed items. However packet says it will dye every fabric combination. It doesn't! One item I wanted to colour was 100% man made fabrics and the colour didn't take so be careful if you want to dye viscose for instance. Other than that it's a stunning colour and I'm very happy.

This is a fantastic product. I used it to dye a cotton dress which had become discoloured from either deodorant or sunscreen stains. I was apprehensive about using it in a fairly new washing machine, but took the risk. It was well worth it and coverage is superbly even. The marks have gone and it has given a much-loved dress a new lease of life. No residue in the machine as long as you clean out the rubber seal with kitchen roll. I’ve done a white wash since and no problems at all. Will definitely use this product again and have already recommended it to friends.

I was going to buy dylon as I have used that brand before, however after reading reviews it seemed the plastic on the pods sticks to the machine and the colour can remain in the machine even after an empty wash. Im very pleased with this brand. You just put the salt fixer bag and the bottle in the machine with your fabrics and the jobs a good un. The colour is lovely golden yellow whereas the dylon looked a bit neon. I coloured two cream Ikea thows which I have had for years. I thought that one packet wouldn't be enough, but I'm really pleased with the results.

I used it to dye a vintage Burberry's trench coat. I was really fearful to stain my coat. IT WAS TOTALLY AMAZING!! It died the coat perfectly, the khaki colour is a total match with the coat (slightly darker than the previous beige, but that's JUST what I wanted) and NO STAINS AT ALL. My washing machine was totally clean after running the normal cleaning cycle. This dye is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than any Dylon I've ever bought (and which costs the same money, but stained my clothes and dyed poorly several times. I wouldn't use it again). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

24.3.2018

This is the best washing machine dye I have tried. The process was completely clean (much easier than emptying out powder into the drum), and it left the machine perfectly clean at the end. The colour was very true to the packet patch, and evenly spread with no blotches or patchiness. I will definitely use it again. The only downside is that the range of available colours is not quite as big as for other brands, such as Dylon. But it works so well I would recommend for use in a modern low-water consumption washing machine.

I’ve seen a lot of people posting pictures of patchy items and blaming the dye. It’s not the dye - it very clearly says it can dye 600g of fabric per pack. For me that was one sweatshirt and one floaty top. So not a lot (you can use two packs at a time but no more than that). Seems a shame it’s getting a bad rap from people who haven’t read the instructions properly. Mine have turned out a deep lilac - not pastel like I’d thought but I love all shades of purple so it’s not an issue for me.

Ignore any negative feedback on this product. The finished result will only ever be as good as the condition of the original item. I dyed 2 sofa covers and all the cushions and the results were nothing less than awesome. Do follow the instructions. Weigh them wash your items and use the right amount of dye. Please note that no brand of dye will cover bleach marks or stains. Don't blame the product if this happens.I will definitely use it again. Great colour range. So easy to use.
