This neat wee drawing aid is a camera lucida in toy form. These things have been used by artists since the Renaissance, and notably by Englishman William Daniell who was one of the leading inspirations for JWM Turner. So criticisms that they're bad for developing drawing skills are utter hoo ha. They just help the inexpert a bit to develop the confidence that comes with expertise. This particular version was given for Christmas to an 11 year old girl who is becoming quite good at drawing and design, and, more important, seems to enjoy them. She thinks it is great. It ensures every element of her drawing is the right scale, shape and position. It goes with her everywhere, being put together and dismantled with ease by both herself and her younger brother. Any suggestion that it is awkward to handle is arrant rubbish. It IS only a toy, and works on a child scale. It helps successfully to copy other pictures or nearby small objects (e.g. a teddy). But a grown up one is vastly more expensive.

My 9 year old son loves this toy. We have only had today and so far he has made 3 pictures and I must say the results are excellent. The design of the easel is that it lends itself to copying drawings more so than drawing images that are in front of you (portraits or landscapes etc). For the system to work the item you are copying needs to be directly infront of the supergrafix.I thought this would be really fiddly to use and to be honest a bit of a 5 minute wonder... but I am honestly impressed with how such a simple contraption can produce perfect copies. It is obviously important that the easel is correctly set up, but once this has been mastered,it is really quite easy to use.I would say that images are slightly easier to draw through this system, but really anything is possible.A great buy for a budding artist.

I bought one of these for my 7 year old daughter before I saw the rather negative review here on Amazon. I was worried that I had bought a rubbish Christmas present, but was pleasantly surprised. It took a few minutes to set up the first time but my little girl got to grips with it very quickly. The eyepiece comes with a removable cover which blacks out one eye. Out of the box, this cover is fitted and that's how we used it. If you remove it and use both eyes it seems to be much trickier to use, which sounds like the problem that the other reviewers were having. You do need to be careful to keep still while tracing, but it is not too difficult to realign the projected image if you need to take a break. After a little practice my daughter was turning out some really accurate drawings (even I managed to get it to work!)

Son (7) saw this advertised and was immediately entranced and put it on his Christmas list. When I read the Amazon reviews I was a bit worried, but managed to get it at a reduced price so took a gamble. He loves it, and it works really well. No problems setting it up and he immediately produced a brilliant drawing.Being plastic, it slips a bit on our kitchen table. Sticking a tea towel underneath it has solved this. The paper supplied can also slip a bit whilst drawing, but we've got some better quality paper which doesn't give this problem, and the cheaper stuff we blu-tacked down. He's delighted with his present and so am I - great for around 7 years of age and for those who enjoy their art. He's going to practice cartooning.

I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but my daughter wanted it for her 9th birthday so I bought it expecting the worst. Shouldn't have worried as it's actually really easy and very effective, my daughter drew the tiger after having it for 5 minutes so a quick learning curve and she's very happy with the results. The item is quite big and chunky so not the easiest to store but if you've got children you've probably already got lots of large lumps of plastic filling your house so what's one more. One thing to note is the item itself isn't the one shown in the videos on Amazon so it doesn't neatly fold down like a briefcase, this 'false'video seems to be on every online shop so I suspect it's an older version.

I bought this item for my twin daughters for their 7th birthday - they had seen it advertised on TV. The age range is 8 upwards but they can cope with it fine, except for the assembly of it. The assembly isn't difficult, but like anything for a child, is done easier and quicker by an adult. They have had hours of fun on this item and I would recommend it for any child who loves to draw, whether they have a natural talent or not. My Mum used it, who admits to not being able to draw a straight line (!) and you could easily recognise what she had copied. I think the concept is brilliant as it builds a child's confidence but does not give them false hope that they are going to be the next famous artist!Money well spent definitely

My son had asked for this for his birthday and he wasn't disappointed. He is an avid drawer and indeed loves to colour in using adult colouring books also but wanted to expand his "expertise" for drawing. He is blind in one eye so the fact we could set the eye piece to be used by either eye was fantastic. He loves that the legs are adjustable and that there are no batteries or gadgets involved and has spend many hours drawing and shading his masterpieces ... It all packs into its own back as well which means it's easy to travel with and store which is a bonus also...Money well spent and the lost star is just for the small niggle that the eye piece doesn't fit brilliantly.

I bought this second hand as the person was frustrated with it...like many othersI put the supergrafix together for my 5 yr old boy who enjoys drawing and it SEEMED it was useless. So i took the time to read some reviews about the product as all didnt seem right. There are 3 pieces of film that cover the mirrors (i took it off both side of small mirror) not realising that the large inner reflective cover is a film cover too.Take this off............underneath is a much clearer mirror that will make the supergrafix work how it should do.THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE GOING WRONG WITH THIS PRODUCT.Son went from frustrated to very happy.

This was bought for my granddaughter - and within minutes of opening it and setting it up, she was making stunning drawings simply by tracing - first one of the samples supplied, and then from a photograph. It is very easy to use - the superimposition of picture to be copied over the dawing paper works perfectly. She has also successfully traced someone posing for her, instead of copying a picture - and this is the first step in learning to draw from 'real life'. It is an excellent tool - I hesitate to call it a toy - and exceptional value for money. (I think if there were an 'adult' version - I might be tempted myself ... )

My daughter was desperate for this for her 9th Birthday as one of her friends had got one. It comes as self-assembly in the box, but is easy to construct and deconstruct (which you can do so it can be easily transported). It is made of good quality plastic and slots together very simply and comes with a couple of 'test' pictures and a few sheets of paper. No tracing paper is required, just plain white A4 fits best.Easy and straightforward instructions for assembly and use, and my daughter has already produced some great pictures - in fact, I might try it myself!Good educational product that I would recommend.

The super grafix is absolutely fine. We did have a slight problem getting the correct angle to view the image so the drawing fitted on to the page below but once it was set up it was great. I think you must remember to remove ALL the sticky film coatings from ALL 3 mirror surfaces or the image will not be clear. I suspect some disappointed users may have left one of these on as what they described would fit with a blurry image. There is film coating on BOTH sides of the small mirror!!!It's a great toy - maybe should have some more thorough instructions but otherwise very useable.

I had read all previous reviews and was a bit worried about it but my 8 year old daughter was determined to have one for her birthday. I don't know if the product has changed since the previous reviews but this was excellent! Only 2 protective covers needed to be removed from the mirrors, which was clear in the instructions, easy to assemble and brilliant image profected onto the stage. She has done done amazing pictures. It does need a stable surface to put it on, and a bit of practice, but she soon got the hang of it. Will be buying my niece on for Christmas.

Yes, the plastic construction is somewhat flimsy and you have to take care of it, especially with younger children. Also, this is not a miracle gadget, which suddenly makes anyone produce perfect pictures or copies of everything! However, it is an interesting tool to develop and improve dexterity as well as the skill of the "drawer's view" (attention to detail, awareness of shapes etc.) For that it can be very useful for adults, too! It is good that it is overall very low-tec (no batteries etc.)

I bought this for my 7 year old son who loves drawing. He seems to like it but struggles to understand how its mean't to work. My 9 year old understands better and has made some good drawings. I had a go and found it quite tricky but was pleased with the result. We're looking forward to having a go at drawing the scenery on our next day out. Only criticism is that I wish all the pieces were held in the back better for storage as I've picked it up a few times and everything has fallen out.

My 10 year old daughter already had one of these so she was able to set this one up with ease for her 7 year old brother. He took to it straightaway and found it very easy to use. Would recommend, especially during social distancing times, both my children love drawing do this is an added bonus. Side note: remember to remove the plastic film, which can be a bit tricky, otherwise lens will be blurry and difficult to see through. Paid £20, good value for money.
