Set in Edo period Japan, "Shadow Tactics: Blades Of The Shogun" is a top-down, isometric, real-time stealth and strategy game from Kalypso Media. Boasting a high authenticity level, an immediate striking feature is the highly polished atmosphere in which the game takes place. The quality of the historically accurate environment is top notch: it's worth just scrolling across and rotating the map just to take in the beautifully designed buildings, people and animals. The sounds of the bustling towns and castles are equally impressive: people chat away, splosh through puddles and crunch through snow as the camera pans around. A simple score makes a welcome contribution too. The story is straightforward and solid, being not too long and encompassing 13 playable missions with a good variety of objectives along the way. There are five playable characters: Hayato is a mercenary ninja, specializing in stealth and misdirection, Mugen is a Shogunate retainer, strong and devastating. Old Takuma is a wily, innovative sniper with a hidden pet. Thief-like Yuki is an agile child of the streets armed with a mantrap and Aiko is a clever kunoichi, a master of disguise and infiltration. The strength of the game lies in the interaction between these varied characters: how the player utilizes them and their skills will make the difference between success and failure. Positioning and timing become increasingly important. To this end, "Shadow Tactics" has a 'shadow mode', slowing the game down and allowing the player to pre-program certain actions, for later synchronized execution. Successful 'shadow mode' actions are always smugly satisfying!Patience, persistence and planning are central to "Shadow Tactics". Play is realistic and unforgiving and does not reward recklessness, although the balance is generally good and doesn't feel unfair. However, there are some sections that require trial-and-error brute force methods to get through, even if approached diligently. There's nothing that a bit of experimentation (save often) and death (save often) won't fix, but the game suffers as a consequence in terms of its real-time feel. Careful observation of the movements and lines-of-sight of enemies will soon have the player operating undetected from the shadows, allowing for their systematic elimination or avoidance. Again, the attention to detail in the environments comes to the fore here: enemies will follow tracks in the snow that they see, will be drawn to the sounds of splashing footsteps or gunshots that they hear or may fetch additional guards in response to finding a corpse, for example. The environments are real-time and alive, so expect them to change depending on your actions. Although the play is initially quite tricky, the simple user interface (including an instant quick save device) ensures a consistently high enjoyment level. If necessary, the difficulty can be adjusted (along with other game settings: audio, video, controller) in the game's menu."Shadow Tactics" is a clear labour of love: beautiful to look at, well thought out and balanced, easy to pick up, difficult to master, wonderfully authentic and immersive. This is slow paced and thoughtful gaming (gung-ho gamers may want to look elsewhere) and should be regarded in the elite catagory of the stealth and strategy genres. Not perfect, but very, very good! Finally, there's a free downloadable demo for PS users wishing to try "Shadow Tactics". Search the PS store to find it!

If you remember the Commandos games from yesteryear and liked them then you will like this game too. I think the PS4 is missing more esoteric titles like this. I say esoteric for a reason, because this will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea. There are a variety of characters with differing skills and equipment that can allow you to navigate through missions in a number of ways to suit your own style, although if your style is not stealth, then you are playing the wrong game. The downside of this also is that most missions will not have all five characters to choose from, limiting your choice a little, although this also works out for a smoother experience because despite their distinctiveness, some characters' skills do overlap. The learning curve here also comes from controls that can be fiddly at first because almost every button on the controller is needed, and commanding your team quickly can be challenging but achievable. Shadow Mode allows you to plan a move in advance, so that can help massively. Fortunately the game is very concise and helpful when introducing new characters and concepts with quick tutorials. The graphics aren't exactly pushing the PS4 to its limits, but they are still easy on the eyes. There can be a lot going on in the screen sometimes and this gets tricky but that's more down to the nature of the game rather than any flaws in graphics. There is a loose story in the game that is vaguely interesting, but you don't need to know it to enjoy the game as the focus is on the gameplay. There is some interesting character development, though. The gameplay is where a game like this really shines. It can be very challenging, but there are varying difficulty levels that can help a lot too. The normal difficulty setting is quite challenging and I probably would recommend the easy setting to get used to the controls if you get frustrated easily. One of the best facets of the game is the save system that is very fluid and allows you to save any time, which is a God-send when each move in a game like this can be critical. Plus, the game reminds you when you haven't saved your game in over a minute. Yes, it really is necessary to save that often.Overall, I found that this is a great game and the only real flaw was some repetition as the game progressed. However if that is not an issue then you will enjoy Shadow Tactics. Each mission can easily last over an hour and the friendly save system makes it addictive to want to go back and try again in various approaches to each level. Definitely recommended if you like a strategy-type of game or want something differen.

If you enjoy strategy games then this is for you, though the emphasis is on stealth. At times you will feel like throwing the controller as it can be frustratingly hard: for example, you may have a guard on a patrol route that for no reason will turn and spot you, or you may even be spotted while hiding in a bush or a guard that will see you even though you're in a blind spot. If you're seen you're pretty much done for. But, for all the frustration with the mechanics, after you've calmed down, you'll find you keep returning to give it one more shot at getting past the enemy defenses. It really is satisfying to use divide and conquer tactics to reach your objective, whether that involves using one character or using several in tandem (one to provide a diversion while another takes out a guard). You can even use items within the mission to make deaths seem a little more natural: such as cattle, falling rocks or collapsing structures to allay suspicion. You can even queue simultaneous actions when in shadow mode, when the odds seem against you which is very satisfying indeed. I can guarantee once you get used to the mechanics of the game then you'll keep coming back as i did as this is a great little strategy game.

Absolutely incredible game. If you've ever played the old Commandos games you will love this. This is a slow-paced tactical/stealth game set in ancient Japan. The polish this game has is amazing from the beautiful art-style and excellent characters right down to the game design itself (just wait until you try using the awesome shadow mode, will make you smile every time). Even gives you the option of having proper Japanese voices and a 60FPS mode if you own a PS4 Pro.This game will fly under-the-radar for a lot of people as it's such a different experience. If you want to understand how good this game is just check out the reviews it's getting.

I played the demo of this game and fell in love with it. If you have played a game called Commandos on the original PlayStation then this is what your getting. It's a deep and enthralling team work game set in Japan. There are only 13 missions but there big and each one gets harder and more tactical as you play with achievements to be grabbed. You have a team of 6 characters each with their own play styles and skill sets it's a must buy game with hours of fun and playability a game you'll play and play again!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great Game, If you like the Commando's type game ( Which I am a fan of) You will love this! Have to say a bit easier than those previous Commando games to play which is not a bad thing as they were rewarding but very difficult. Well worth buying! Hope more games like this are released!

Delivery was good. Game is cruel and punishing, it makes you think and rethink your tactics over and over. Save feature and reminder is a blessing. This game is no push over and I am pleased I played the PS4 Demo, because I may not of bought the game on spec only.

Very good game, the levels are well thought out. It is quite difficult in places and you have to carefully plan your approach. Reminds me of the old Commandos games. Recommended.
